NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【STARGAZER : LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH STARGAZER !!

“TNT Was The First Norwegian Hard Rock Band With International Success, And We, Coming From The Same City As Them, Were So Proud.”

DISC REVIEW “LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME”

彼らのアルバム “The Knights of the New Thunder” は、僕たちの心を激しく揺さぶったね!
Life Will Never Be The Same”。

“Of course we recognize Harem Scarem and Bad Moon Rising, and you might see that they are influenced by a lot of the same bands as we are. These are bands sticking to their guns while grunge and stoner-rock took the mainstream. Therefore, you can say we too hold on to that music we were originally inspired by.”
Melodic hard rock Scandinavian five-piece STARGAZER formed in 2001 under the band name F.R.I.E.N.D., released an EP in 2005, changed their name to STARGAZER in 2008, self-titled in 2009, and after 10 years, released their second in 2019 album “The Sky Is the Limit” and continues to be highly acclaimed by old-school, melody-oriented listeners. Why is that? Because there are certain reasons and beliefs that exist in this beautiful Norwegian stargazing turret.
“First thing is we record the old-fashioned way, analogue with microphones. Using analogue traditional pre-amps and no re-amping, to keep every signal authentic. We don’t go out there and buy songs from Tin-Pan-Alley-like music makers, but we spend time and dedication in creating our own music from the bottom. The music we make is the music closest to our hearts.”
As you know, the majority of “Melo-hard” music in recent years has come from Italy’s Frontiers Music, which has become something of a last resort and lifeline for the likes of you. However, along with the mind-blowingly great releases, the fact is that there have been a few collection projects that have shuffled members around. Also, they often rely on their “home band,” led by Alessandro Del Vecchio, to compose, arrange, and perform, so not all of their music is “from the heart. The beauty of STARGAZER is that it is a band with a lot of heart.
The beauty of STARGAZER is that they are not bound by these ties, but pursue music from the heart in their own way. Of course, Harem Scarem and Bad Moon Rising always had their doubts, but their spirit and music that continued to pursue hard rock in those difficult times should be praised even more than now. And STARGAZER carries in its body the conviction of a melodic musician who overcame the stormy seas of the 90s.
“TNT was the first Norwegian hard rock band with international success, and we, coming from the same city as them, were so proud. Their album “The Knights of the New Thunder” blew our minds! They kind of showed the way for other hard rock bands that it was possible to come from a small country like Norway, and make a big impact on the world scene anyway. ”
Above all, STARGAZER is in that TNT vein. Hailing from Trondheim, no band embodies the TNT-isms more than STARGAZER, which inherited Ronnie’s guitar and successfully guest-starred Morty. The trinity of Aurora’s harmonies, the beautiful melodies of Glasswork, and the machine guns of the guitars, with the added brawn of John Sykes and WHITESNAKE, brings the perfect 1987 back to life here and now.” Life Will Never Be The Same”. Yes, Our life will never be the same after discovering their melodies.
We had the pleasure of interviewing singer Tore Andre Helgemo and guitarist William Ernstsen. Here
we go!

STARGAZER “LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH STARGAZER

Q1: At first, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【TORE ANDRE】: When I was a kid I found great pleasure diving into my mother’s record collection. I was not more than three our four years when I heard Beatles, Shadows, Elvis and lots of other popular music. It was the most rocking songs that always appealed to me even back then. So not only melody but the rhythm was very important to me. Then in school I discovered Peter Gabriel and David Bowie and became a huge fan already. Hard rock happened when Mötley Crüe came with Shout at the Devil and I was 10 years old. Then came W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister, Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin and a whole lot. It blew my mind and took my soul!

【WILLIAM】: For me, before I started playing myself, it was Beatles, Elvis, ABBA and all kinds of melodic music my parents listened to. I also listened to classical stuff, Norwegian music as well. It’s like we had one national broadcaster we were obliged to listen to when we were kids. Hard rock came in my early teens, and then I discovered the guitar at around 14 years of age, and a new world opened up. When I heard Eruption by Van Halen for the first time I wanted a guitar!! Thus Eddie Van Halen saved me from football. Then I started listening to Van Halen, Deep Purple, Gary Moore, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio and many more.

Q2: When one thinks of Norwegian hard rock, the first thing that comes to mind is TNT. They are very popular in Japan, and in fact, they are one of my favorite bands. Are you guys influenced by them?

【STARGAZER】: TNT was the first Norwegian hard rock band with international success, and we, coming from the same city as them, were so proud. Their album “The Knights of the New Thunder” blew our minds! They kind of showed the way for other hard rock bands that it was possible to come from a small country like Norway, and make a big impact on the world scene anyway. A fun fact is that William bought his first guitar from Ronny Le Tekrø in ’84, a fender strat. Another fact is that Morty Black the bass player, and Morten Skogstad the drummer from “Intuition”-album, they both play on both Stargazer-albums “The Sky is the Limit” and “Life Will Never Be The Same”. So, definitely we have been inspired by TNT.

彼らのアルバム “The Knights of the New Thunder” は、僕たちの心を激しく揺さぶったね!
それにあの、”Intuition” のベーシスト Morty Black とドラマー Morten Skogstad が、STARGAZER のアルバム “The Sky is the Limit” と “Life Will Never Be The Same” で演奏しているんだ。

Q3: Speaking of Norway, Not only TNT, but also there are many other bands with great melodies, including Da Vinci, Conception, Ark, Circus Maximus, Wig wam, Return and you, right? Do you think it has something to do with Norway’s nature, scenery or national character?

【STARGAZER】: We think the music can be inspired by nature, the scenery, the everchanging weather, from beautiful blue skies till heavy rain and winter storms. You can hear that influence way back to the classical music by Edvard Grieg as well, so it is not strange if that continues in to the music of today. When saying that, we also commit to a lot of other influences when making music. History, books, movies, personal experiences in real life and other bands music can be among such influences.

Q4: On the other hand, Norway is the mother country of black metal, isn’t it? I think black metal was born right in your youth. It was a big boom. Why did you pursue melodic music instead of going that way?

【STARGAZER】: Black metal in its beginnings were like a riot against all establishment. As it gained commercial success, that rebel side to it may have faded a little. We were listening to other kinds of music back when black metal took off, so we didn’t really hang in there. That said, I Tore, were into more extreme metal for a longer period when I was tired of the hair metal mass production in the late 80’s. Then I dug into heavy stuff like Slayer and Kreator. But, none of us really cared for the black metal scene back then. We have more realized it and appreciated parts of it later on, seeing what they have accomplished.

Q5: Your music is melodic hard rock/AOR at its finest, but some say the genre is outdated or dead, right? Yes, the fan base is older and the genre is probably supported by a fixed fan base. What are your thoughts on its current state, and is it possible to “Make Melodic Hard Great Again”?

【STARGAZER】: The melodic hard rock has never really been away, it has “always” been there. They said rock was dead first time in the 50’s, but we think it lives kinda well. When you look at the scene, the fans are the most loyal of them all we think. Japan is a great example on keeping this scene alive, the people there seem so dedicated to this kind of music.

Q6: Under such circumstances, Italian labels such as Frontiers Music and Art of Melody Music are really doing their best by releasing a lot of works. However, there is no doubt that there is a lot of the same kind of music, and some of it is “fake” and not truly inspiring. Your music is just as “real” and truly moving as the great works of the 80’s and 90’s! What do you think is the difference?

【STARGAZER】: First thing is we record the old-fashioned way, analogue with microphones. Using analogue traditional pre-amps and no re-amping, to keep every signal authentic. We don’t go out there and buy songs from Tin-Pan-Alley-like music makers, but we spend time and dedication in creating our own music from the bottom. The music we make is the music closest to our hearts. We don’t say we know the answer exactly to what your asking there, but maybe something of what we mentioned can make you hear a little difference. We are always trying to bring elements we think are suitable in hard rock, in to our songs.

Q7: Your music reminds me of John Sykes. Not to mention guitar playing, blending the best parts of bands like Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Blue Murder, etc., with your typically European melodies! Amazing! Is he a big part of your life?

【STARGAZER】: Of course, John Sykes played on two of the biggest albums in the eighties; Thunder & Lightning (Thin Lizzy) and 1987 (Whitesnake). William as a guitar player were of course influenced by John Sykes, and Tore André as a singer has done his time singing along to the amazing pipes and lines of Mr. David Coverdale. Blue Murder is also a band we’ve been listening to a lot.

Q8: On a more geeky note, I love the vocal harmonies, call-and-response, modulations, etc. that you guys have in common with Harem Scarem and Bad Moon Rising. You guys seem to be familiar with the manic hard rock of the 90’s, don’t you?

【STARGAZER】: Yes, of course we recognize both these bands, and you might see that they are influenced by a lot of the same bands as we are. These are bands sticking to their guns while grunge and stoner-rock took the mainstream. Therefore, you can say we too hold on to that music we were originally inspired by. We never meant to invent the wheel, but we really enjoy it when it keeps on (rocking and) rolling! Our take on it is being a classic hard rock band with an up to date production.
