US プログ・パワーの伝説、SAVATAGE の首領 Jon Oliva の言葉です。復活の SAVATAGE。アメリカにプログ・メタルとパワー・メタルの種をまいたドラマティックな反乱軍が、ついにメタル世界へと帰還します。
「僕が92年に初めて SAVATAGE に参加したとき、Criss が “今まで一緒にいられなかった時間を取り戻し、一緒に遊んで、もっとお互いを知る必要がある。だから一緒に暮らそう” と言ってくれたんだ。それが彼のやり方なんだよ。彼は誰に対しても完全な愛と敬意を持って接していた。本当に天使のような精神を持っていたんだ。僕たちは一緒に音楽を作り、失われた時間を取り戻していった。だからこそ、数年というより、10年以上一緒に仕事をしていたような気がしているんだ」
SAVATAGE を語るとき、避けては通れない2つの魂こそ、Criss Oliva と Paul O’Neill。両者とも、この世を去って何年も経ちますが、未だに彼らに対するスタンディング・オベーションと “カーテン・コール” は鳴り止みません。
Jon Oliva の弟、Criss Oliva は天賦の才に恵まれたギタリストでした。Eddie Van Halen の技量を宿しながら、エモーションとカタルシスに全振りした Criss の流麗なソロイズムはまさに天国への階段で、バンドのドラマ性を飛躍的に向上させていました。Zak Stevens が証言するように、誰が評しても “天使” となるその本質は、むしろ Randy Rhoads に近かったのかもしれません。とにかく、Criss のギターと Jon のピアノ、そして後に Zak が受け継ぐ旋律の魔法を軸とし、Paul O’Neill の荘厳華麗なシンフォニーと変幻自在なリズム、そこに考え抜かれたコンセプトが加わって、SAVATAGE の唯一無二は実現していました。
ただし、Criss と Paul が召されてもなお、SAVATAGE-Ismは脈々と受け継がれ、途絶えることはありません。Chris Caffery, Alex Skolnick, Al Pitrelli といった超一流がギターの芸術を繋ぎ、Paul O’Neill のシンフォニーは TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHERSTRA として多くの SAVATAGE メンバーと共に夢のような成果を残しました。後続への影響も並々ならぬものがあったはずです。そして、Jon Oliva が SAVATAGE の声であるのと同様に、Zak が歌った4枚の名作、その驚異的な完成度を鑑みれば彼もまた、SAVATAGE の声に違いありません。

Jon Oliva とボーカルを分け合う Zak Stevens による新たなバンド ARCHON ANGEL も、そうした SAVATAGE-Ism の継承者であり、同時に SAVATAGE の復活を祝う天使の啓示でもあるでしょう。これほどドラマティックかつ知的なプログ・パワーは近年稀に見ると言わざるをえません。素晴らしいのは、SAVATAGE のシンフォニーやドラマを基軸としながらも、QUEENSRYCHE が見せたコンパクト&キャッチーなプログ劇場、FATES WARNING の濃密なプログ・エキスをしっかりと抽出して、アーコン・エンジェルの物語へと落とし込んでいるところでしょう。アーコンとは、神々の宣託を地上に伝える選ばれた天使のこと。その天使がもし、Criss Oliva だったとしたら、我々は USプログ・メタルの始祖が三位一体となった ARCHON ANGEL の作品で、SAVATAGE の雄々しき復活を今まさに天から告げられているのでしょう。

INTERVIEW WITH ZAK STEVENS
Q1: Jon Oliva recently stated that he hopes to release Savatage’s last album, “Curtain Call,” next year on Chris’ birthday. He wants to close the band with a masterpiece. Can you tell us as much as you can about the album?
【ZAK】: We’ve started working on music, but the process has only just begun. We have to make a lot of decisions regarding which songs will make the final cut for the album. Jon has composed a huge amount of material for this album, so we just need to let the writing and decision-making process take place in a natural progression. Then, of course, the hard work must be done in the studio once we’ve made the final decisions on the songs.
Q1: Jon Oliva が最近、「SAVATAGE の最後のアルバムを、来年、Criss の誕生日にリリースしたい。”Curtain Call” というタイトルで、バンドの最高傑作で幕を閉じたいんだ」と話していました。
【ZAK】: うん、僕たちは SAVATAGE の音楽制作を開始したけど、そのプロセスはまだ始まったばかりなんだ。どの曲がアルバムの最終カットになるのか、これからいろいろと決めていかなければならない。 Jon はこのアルバムのために膨大な量の曲を作曲してくれているから、あとは作曲と意思決定のプロセスを自然な流れで進めていくだけなんだ。 そしてもちろん、曲を最終的に決定した後は、スタジオでのハードワークが待っているよ。
Q2: Recently, even PANTERA has been revived, and SAVATAGE may no longer be the only legendary band that has not yet been revived. Of course, there was a great performance at Wacken, but how is it that SAVATAGE has not released an album in such a long time?
【ZAK】: At the time we played at Wacken along with T.S.O. in 2015, the plan was to move towards a full band reunion for Savatage. We were working towards this reality when Paul O’Neill suddenly and tragically passed away in April of 2017. At this point, it took absolutely everyone involved with T.S.O. and Savatage to keep Paul’s legacy going and to try and keep his energy and vision with T.S.O. heading in a direction that we felt he would be proud of. Unfortunately, this huge effort took the momentum away from the Savatage reunion at this time. But to the credit of everyone involved with both bands, we were able to push through and see T.S.O to the other side and beyond. For the first time since 2017, Jon just felt that the situation was right to get Savatage back on track. Now that T.S.O has been put in a situation where it’s successes in the U.S. can continued, it was time to act.
Q2: PANTERA まで再結成した今、伝説的メタル・バンドで復活していないのは SAVATAGE だけかもしれませんね。もちろん、Wacken での一度きりの素晴らしいパフォーマンスはありましたが、なぜこれだけ長い間沈黙を続けていたのでしょう？
【ZAK】: 実は2015年、T.S.O. とともに SAVATAGE が Wacken で演奏した時点では、SAVATAGE のフルバンド再結成に向けて動き出す計画だったんだ。 この実現に向けて動いていた時、2017年の4月に Paul O’Neill が突然、悲劇的な死を遂げてしまったんだ…それであの時は、Paul の遺産を継続させ、T.S.O. のエネルギーとビジョンを、彼が誇りに思うであろう方向に向かわせるために、T.S.O. と SAVATAGE に関わるすべての人の力が絶対に必要となってしまった。 残念ながら、あの大きな努力によって、SAVATAGE の再結成の勢いはなくなってしまったんだ。 もちろん、両バンドに関わるすべての人の功績により、僕たちは Paul の遺志を継ぎ、T.S.O. の未来を描くことができたんだけどね。
そして今、2017年以来初めて、Jon は遂に、SAVATAGE を軌道に乗せるための状況が整っていると感じたのだよ。 T.S.O. がアメリカでの成功を継続できる状況に置かれた今、遂に行動する時が来たんだよ。
Q3: The world has been plagued by dark shadows of pandemics, wars, and natural disasters. It is in these dark times that I feel that many people need your fantasies and exuberance as a place of escape, courage, and strength. What can Savatage’s music bring to these dark times?
【ZAK】: It’s very unfortunate about all the negative events that have occurred in the world, especially since 2020. I think that Savatage can bring what it has always been able to bring to people – Songs that become a timeline in people’s lives, songs that can bring people through tough times in their lives, and songs that can inspire. These are the aspects that I have always heard about from our fans, and I expect this to continue through our music.
Q3: パンデミック、戦争、分断、気候変動など、2020年代は暗い始まりを迎えました。こうした世界に SAVATAGE の復活は何をもたらせるのでしょう？
【ZAK】: 特に2020年以降、世界で起きているネガティブな出来事については、とても残念に思っている。 復活した SAVATAGE は、今まで通り、人々の人生のタイムラインになるような曲、人生の辛い時期を乗り越えるような曲、そして感動を与えるような曲を届けることができると思っているよ。 それは、ファンのみんなからいつも聞いている話で、僕たちの音楽を通じて、そうした素晴らしい出来事が継続することを期待しているんだ 。
Q4: Both Criss Oliva and Paul O’Neill have long since passed away, but the praise for them continues to pour in. What were their talents like for you?
【ZAK】: It’s hard to put into words how tremendous Criss’ and Paul’s influence was and will forever be. I was just very lucky to have been able to work with both of them and to learn so much from them. I only got to work with Criss for a few years, but I lived with him and his late wife Dawn at their house for about a year. This is because when I first joined Savatage in ’92, Criss told me to come live with him because we needed to make up for lost time and hang out and just get to know each other more. That’s just the way he was. He treated everyone with total love and respect. He had a really angelic spirit. We wrote music together and made up for lost time. For this reason, it still seems like we worked together for more like a decade rather than just a few years. As for Paul, I worked with him for over twenty years. The knowledge I gained working with him was tremendous to say the least. The things I learned from Paul over all those years, about every aspect of the music business, has basically shaped my entire career.

Paul については、20年以上一緒に仕事をした。 彼と一緒に仕事をしたことで得た知識は、控えめに言ってもとてつもないものだったよ。 その間に Paul から学んだ、音楽ビジネスのあらゆる知識は、基本的に僕のキャリアすべてを形成しているんだ。
Q5: How do you feel about sharing vocals with Jon Oliva? Some people say you guys sound alike.
【ZAK】: I love sharing vocal duties with Jon. Personally, I haven’t heard that many people say that we sound alike, but I’m sure there are a few that have. I would say our similarities would mostly lie in the softer or cleaner vocal sounds. But overall, I would say that our voices are vastly different in tone and color, especially in the power range or in the higher vocal ranges. That’s what makes us work so well together. There’s this extreme dichotomy between the two voices. Jon has an extremely powerful voice and a high range. I have a very wide range from low to high. Together we have a lot of textures to work with. I’ve always felt that Jon and I have a really cool sound when performing together. I really enjoy the fact that we offer a rare and different approach to metal vocals on albums or performing live.
Q5: Jon Oliva とボーカルを分け合うことにかんしては、どう思っているのでしょう？2人の声が似ていると言う人もいますね？
【ZAK】: 僕は Jon とボーカルを分け合うのが大好きなんだ。個人的には、僕たちの声が似ているという話はあまり聞いたことがないのだけど、きっとそう思う人もいるんだろう。
僕たちの共通点は、ボーカルがよりソフトでクリーンなサウンドであることだろう。しかし、全体的に見れば、僕たちの声のトーンや色は、特にパワーレンジや高い声域において、大きく異なっていると言えるだろうね。それが、僕たちの相性の良さにつながっているんだ。
2人の声の間には、極端な二律背反があるんだ。 Jon は非常にパワフルな声と高い音域を持っている。僕は低音から高音まで、とても広い音域を持っている。だから一緒に仕事をすると、たくさんの “テクスチャー” を手に入れることができるんだ。 Jon と僕が一緒に歌うと、とてもクールなサウンドになると常々感じている。アルバムやライブで、メタル・ヴォーカルには珍しい、異なるアプローチを提供できることをとても楽しんでいるんだ。
Q6: Still, Archon Angel’s two albums are excellent! They are full of dramatic metal songs that make the best use of your songs! Why did you decide to form a new band instead of Circle II Circle?
【ZAK】: Thank you very much! Archon Angel’s producer and guitarist Aldo Lonobile contacted me about six months after we worked together on Timo Tolkki’s “Avalon”. He had written a few songs with Timo, and I sang a few songs on two of his Avalon albums. So, in 2019, Aldo approached me about doing a few albums together for Frontiers Records under a new band name. At the time I was living in Michigan. My wife Katherine and I were out taking a walk around a lake when I told her about Aldo’s message. She quickly came up with the idea of doing a concept album around the life of an archon as it was presented in the second century within the religion of Gnosticism. In this religion, the archon was the only entity that was able to bring messages from the people of earth to the divinities. It was an interesting concept to me, and Katherine quickly came up with the name “Archon Angel” and said we could make the songs each represent a chapter on the archon’s life. And so, the band was born. Katherine actually writes all the lyrics for Archon Angel as well. We have lots of writers that work on AA songs. The only writers that write on all of our songs are me, Aldo, and Katherine. But we have as many as ten writers that appear on various songs. As a matter of fact, on this new album “II”, Chris Caffery contributed the song “Quicksand”. This is the first time Chris and I have worked together writing since the Circle II Circle days. CIIC has been idle since 2015 after thirteen years and seven albums. All our members went in different directions and pursued various projects since our last album. So, it just made sense to start a new project with Archon Angel in 2019.
Q6: それにしても、ARCHON ANGEL の2枚のアルバムは実に素晴らしいですね！ドラマティックなメタル・ソングが目白押しですよ！CIRCLE Ⅱ CIRCLE ではなく、新たにバンドを立ち上げたのはなぜだったんですか？
【ZAK】: どうもありがとう！ ARCHON ANGEL のプロデューサーでギタリストの Aldo Lonobile は、Timo Tolkki の “Avalon” で一緒に仕事をした後、半年ほどで僕に連絡をくれたんだ。彼は Timo と何曲か曲を書いていて、僕は彼の ”Avalon” の2枚のアルバムで何曲か歌ったことがあったからね。それで2019年に Aldo から、新しいバンド名でフロンティアーズ・レコードのために一緒に何枚かアルバムを作らないかと打診があったんだ。
当時、僕はミシガンに住んでいてね。妻のキャサリンと湖の周りを散歩していたときに、Aldo のメッセージのことを話したんだ。彼女はすぐに、2世紀にグノーシス主義という宗教の中で提示された、アーコンの生涯をテーマにしたコンセプトアルバムを作るというアイデアを思いついたんだよ。この宗教では、アーコンは地上の人々から神々にメッセージを届けることができる唯一の存在とされていた。それでキャサリンはすぐに “Archon Angel” という名前を思いつき、曲はそれぞれアーコンの人生の一章を表すものにすればいいと言ったんだ。こうしてバンドは誕生したんだよ。
実はキャサリンは ARCHON ANGEL の歌詞もすべて書いているんだ。ARCHON ANGEL の曲にはたくさんの作曲家が関わっていてね。僕たちの曲すべてに書いているライターは、僕と Aldo 、そしてキャサリンだけだ。だけど、いろいろな曲を10人くらいで書き上げている。
実は、今回のニューアルバム “II” では、Chris Caffesy が “Quicksand” という曲を提供してくれた。 Chris と僕が一緒に曲を書くのは、CIRCLE Ⅱ CIRCLE 時代以来なんだ。 CIIC は13年、7枚のアルバムを経て2015年から活動を休止している。 前作からメンバー全員が違う方向へ進み、様々なプロジェクトを進めていたからね。だから、2019年に ARCHON ANGEL と新しいプロジェクトを始めるのは理にかなっていたんだ。
Q7: Of course, Archon Angel will inevitably be compared to Savatage, but interestingly enough, I could also see influences from Queensryche and Fates Warning. I think those three are the progenitors of American prog metal, but how do you feel about their music?
【ZAK】: I have always been a huge fan of Queensryche and Fates Warning. I can definitely justify the comparisons between Archon Angel and these bands. I know that Aldo Lonobile is a huge Queensryche fan as well, so this totally makes sense to me. I do hear hints of the Queensryche and Fates Warning influence here and there in our songs. We have two videos out there for the new Archon Angel “II” album – “Fortress” and “Afterburn”. Be sure to watch and share!! Thank you very much! There are lots of strong songs on the album. Some more of my favorite songs from the album are “Wake of Emptiness”, “Shattered”, “Away From The Sun”, and “Lake of Fire”.

Q8: You also have a degree in psychology, does that help you when you write lyrics?
【ZAK】: Yes it definitely does. I take inspiration from everyday stories I hear from people, interesting news stories, events, and especially stories about world history. How people feel about things, react to things, and process things, are all very interesting to me. It’s a crazy world out there right now, so our perception of everything is paramount to what happens in the world at all times.
Q8: あなたは心理学の学位を持っているそうですが、それは作品のリリックやテーマの構築に役立っているのでしょうか？
【ZAK】: うん、まちがいなくね。僕は、人から聞いた日常的な話や、興味深いニュース、出来事、特に世界史に関する話からインスピレーションを得ているんだ。人が物事をどう感じ、どう反応し、どう処理していくのかが、僕にとって非常に興味深いテーマだから。
今、世界はクレイジーな状況だから、僕たちのすべての知覚が、常に世界で起こっていることに最も重要な意味を持つんだよ。
