DISC REVIEW “ROOMBAYA”
「アルメニアの若い世代の嗜好には、SYSTEM OF A DOWN が大きな影響を与えているということだね。正直に言おう、アルメニア人は他のアルメニア人が有名になるのが好きなんだよ。だから僕たちは、単純に彼らのことを無視できなかったんだ」
2023年が終わろうとしている現在に至っても、アルメニアの英雄 SYSTEM OF A DOWN が新しいアルバムを出す気配はありません。もちろん、ライブでのケミストリーは十分という彼らの言葉通りしばしばツアーは行なっています。アルツェフとアルメニアで起きた紛争や虐殺に際しては、実に15年ぶりとなる新曲で世界に訴えかけもしました。とはいえ、非常に残念ですが、おそらく2005年以来となるアルバムは、来年も、再来年も、届くことはないでしょう。しかし、案ずることはありません。私たちには同じアルメニアの血を引く MANAPART がいます。
「たとえ音楽が世界を変えることができなくても、ある特定のグループの人々がこの世界について感じていることを反映することはできる。だから、より良い未来への希望があると感じたら、僕たちはそれを歌で伝えるんだ。音楽は命を救うことはできないけど、少なくとも気分を良くさせることができる。そうすれば、この世界に小さくても良い変化を与えることになるんだよ」
SYSTEM OF A DOWN と違って、MANAPART はアメリカに拠点を置いてはいませんし、伝説的プロデューサーのリック・ルービンも共にはいません。しかし、彼らには誠実さと野心、創造性が無尽蔵に備わっています。常に紛争と隣り合わせの場所で生まれ育ったからこそ、身に染みて感じる命と平和、希望の大切さ、そして悲しみ。
「僕たちの音楽にある哀愁は、僕たちの国が歩んできた厳しい歴史的な道によって形成され、僕たちのDNAの中にあるものだと思う。正直に言うと、人々を幸せな場所に届けるような本当に良い曲を書くのはとても難しいんだよ」
MANAPART は2020年の結成以来、世紀末の Nu-metal と東洋音楽、アルメニアのフォーク・ミュージックのユニークな婚姻を成功させ、SYSTEM OF A DOWN のフロントマン Serji Tankian その人からも賞賛されるまでに頭角を現してきました。MANAPART が母国の英雄と比較されるのは、彼らが SOAD のカバー・バンドから始まったことはもちろん、それ以上に同じアルメニアの悲哀を抱きしめているからでしょう。
大国をバックとした係争地、ナゴルノ=カラバフを巡るアゼルバイジャンとの血で血を洗う紛争は、彼の地に生きる人々の心を、体を疲弊させていきました。だからこそ MANAPART は、表現力豊かな音楽で社会的不公正、抑圧や心の憂鬱など感情をとらえた力強いメロディーを通して、人生の不条理と複雑さを探求していきました。そうして彼らは、リスナーをメランコリーに満ちたアジアと欧州、そして中東の交差点へと誘いますが、その一方で、作品全体の根底にあるテーマはより良い未来と開放のための希望と光が溢れているのです。
今回弊誌では、MANAPART にインタビューを行うことができました。「Roombaya とはアルメニアの儀式の踊り。僕たちの魂が解放される儀式のようなもので、神聖な火の周りで踊るブードゥー教のダンスのようなものだ。この炎は僕たちの魂を時空を超えて高揚させ、本当の自由を感じさせてくれるんだ」 どうぞ！！
INTERVIEW WITH MANAPART
Q1: 1. First of all, in a place like Armenia, where metal and rock music are not so popular (maybe), can you tell us how you became committed to such music?
【MANAPART】: It’s true – rock\metal music isn’t Armenia’s most preferred type of music, but we can’t say that there is none. Development of the internet, social media and availability of everything helps a lot. You can finally see what people like in other countries, what they listen to, what they watch. Having this information you can easily find something that would cause interest in you even if originally it’s not a part of your culture. And let us not forget – there is a huge influence on the young generation’s taste formed by System of a Down – a band that carries armenian ‘cultural code’ inside this heavy music. And let’s be honest, armenians like it when other armenians become famous, so we simply can’t ignore this band.
Q1: まず、アルメニアで、あなたがメタルやロックに傾倒するようになったきっかけから教えていただけますか？
【MANAPART】: ロックやメタルがアルメニアで最も好まれている音楽ではないのは事実だけど、全くないとは言えないよ。インターネットやソーシャルメディアが発達し、あらゆるものが手に入るようになったことは大きな助けになったね。他の国の人々が何を好み、何を聴き、何を観ているのかがようやくわかるようになったからね。
ネットの情報があれば、たとえそれが元々自分の国の文化にはないものであったとしても、自分の興味を引くようなものを簡単に見つけることができる。そして忘れてはならないのは、アルメニアの若い世代の嗜好には、SYSTEM OF A DOWN が大きな影響を与えているということだね。正直に言おう、アルメニア人は他のアルメニア人が有名になるのが好きなんだよ。だから僕たちは、単純に彼らのことを無視できなかったんだ。
Q2: There are moments when your music reminds me of System of a Down, which also has Armenian roots. Do you actually draw influence and inspiration from them?
【MANAPART】: SOAD was and still is a massive inspiration for us. We started as a System Of A Down cover-band (you can check it out on Youtube, the band was called Wishup). They are a good example that says – you can add your national identity in your music and still be popular among other cultures as well.
We’re not trying to follow their steps, every band has it’s own unique path and we’re trying to walk our own.
Q2: お話にも出ましたが、あなたたちの音楽を聴いていると、同じアルメニアにルーツを持つ SYSTEM OF A DOWN を思い出す瞬間があります。実際に彼らから影響やインスピレーションを受けているのですね？
【MANAPART】: SYSTEM OF A DOWN は、昔も今も僕らにとって大きなインスピレーションを与えてくれているよ。そもそも、僕らは SYSTEM OF A DOWN のカバー・バンドとしてスタートしたからね。Youtube でチェックできるよ。バンド名はWishup だ。彼らは、自分の国のアイデンティティを音楽に入れても、他の文化圏でも人気が出るという良い例なんだ。
でもどのバンドにも独自の道があり、今僕たちは自分たちの道を歩もうとしているよ。
Q3: Your music seems to have been praised by Serj Tankian? What did he actually say to you?
【MANAPART】: It’s better to ask Serj =)
We know that he’s aware of our music and that he appreciates what we do. But he surely can give you more details on his opinion.
Q3: あなたの音楽は Serji Tankian からも賞賛されているようですね？どんな言葉をかけられたんですか？
【MANAPART】: それは Serji に聞いた方がいいよ (笑)
彼が僕らの音楽を知っていて、僕らの活動を評価してくれていることは知っている。だから彼に聞けばきっと、その意見についてもっと詳しく教えてくれるはずだよ。
Q4: One thing you and System of a Down have in common is a sense of melancholy and sadness in your music. Do you find such a sense in traditional Armenian music and culture?
【MANAPART】: Maybe it’s in our DNA that’s been also formed by quite a tough historical path our country is taking. Not sure if we can give a good answer on this one, even though it’s a very good question. Let’s just say that we write what we feel is right melodically and lyrically. What we write appears to have melancholy and sadness sometimes.
And let’s be honest, it’s harder to write a real good song that delivers people to a place of happiness.
Q4: MANAPART と SYSTEM OF A DOWN に共通しているのは、生々しいメランコリーや悲しみでしょう。伝統的なアルメニアの音楽や文化にそうした感覚が根付いているんですか？
【MANAPART】: たぶんそれは、僕たちの国が歩んできた厳しい歴史的な道によって形成され、僕たちのDNAの中にあるものだと思う。とてもいい質問だけど、この件に関していい答えが出せるかどうかはわからないな。ただ、メロディー的にも歌詞的にも正しいと思うものを書いているとだけ言っておこう。たしかに僕たちが書くものには、時に哀愁や悲しみがあるように思えるよね。
正直に言うと、人々を幸せな場所に届けるような本当に良い曲を書くのはとても難しいんだよ。
Q5: The Armenian lyrics are also wonderfully suited to the music! Is it still important for you to sing in your native language?
【MANAPART】: It’s just a short phrase in Roombaya – the rest of the song is in english. And one other song that’s written in armenian only is Yerani – it was meant to be Armenian.
We don’t have a formed agenda here, we just do what feels right. With Roombaya it felt right to add this main phrase in armenian – so we did that.
Q5: 時に登場するアルメニア語も音楽に合っていて素晴らしいですね！母国語で歌うことはやはり重要ですか？
【MANAPART】: まあアルメニア語を使ったのは “Roombaya” の短いフレーズだけで、あとは英語だよ。あと、アルメニア語で書かれているのは “Yerani” という曲で、これはそもぞアルメニア語で歌うつもりだったんだ。
僕たちは、何か特別な意図があるわけではなく、ただ正しいと思うことをやっているだけなんだよ。”Roombaya” では、アルメニア語のメイン・フレーズを加えるのが正しいと感じたから、そうしたまでさ。
Q6: In “Tomorrow,” you sing about peace? In fact, the world is going to war, and Armenia is in conflict. What can music do in such a world? Can music change the world?
【MANAPART】: We don’t know if anything can change the world. But music is a very big part of it. And music just like any other form of art is a great tool to express the feelings you have. So even if it can’t change the world – it can reflect what certain group of people feel about this world. So if we feel like there is hope for the better future – we deliver it with our songs.
Music doesn’t save lives, but if it can make you at least feel better – it gives a little good change to this world indeed.
Q6: “Tomorrow” では平和について歌っていますね？ 世界は戦争に向かっているように思えますし、実際、アルメニアも紛争をかかえています。そうした世界で音楽は何ができるのでしょうか？音楽は世界を変えることができますか？
【MANAPART】: 何かが世界を変えられるかどうかはわからない。だけど、音楽はその非常に大きな部分を占めているよ。そして音楽は、他の芸術と同じように、自分の感情を表現するための素晴らしいツールだ。
だから、たとえ音楽が世界を変えることができなくても、ある特定のグループの人々がこの世界について感じていることを反映することはできる。だから、より良い未来への希望があると感じたら、僕たちはそれを歌で伝えるんだ。
音楽は命を救うことはできないけど、少なくとも気分を良くさせることができる。そうすれば、この世界に小さくても良い変化を与えることになるんだよ。
Q7: Roombaya sounds like an Armenian ritual or dance? The theme of liberation of the soul is wonderfully suited to this song, Can you explain more about Roombaya?
【MANAPART】: You’re right, Roombaya is an Armenian ritual dance, but it’s something we came up with – like our own legend.
The main phrase of the song is in Armenian ‘Eke parenk Roombaya’ and it means ‘Let’s dance Roombaya’. This song is like a ritual of our souls’ liberation, a voodoo dance around the sacred fire. This fire can uplift our souls above time and space to let us feel the real freedom.
Q7: “Roombaya” はアルメニアの儀式か踊りのようですね？魂の解放というテーマがこの曲に見事にマッチしています。
【MANAPART】: 君は正しいよ。”Roombaya” はアルメニアの儀式の踊りだ。ただこの曲は僕たちが考え出したもの。
この曲のメインフレーズはアルメニア語で “Eke parenk Roombaya” といっていて、”Roombaya を踊ろう” という意味なんだ。この歌は、僕たちの魂が解放される儀式のようなもので、神聖な火の周りで踊るブードゥー教のダンスのようなものだ。この炎は僕たちの魂を時空を超えて高揚させ、本当の自由を感じさせてくれる。
Q8: Recently BLOODYWOOD and THE HU, have made it big by incorporating traditional music from their home countries into metal. Including you guys, Why do you think that folk/ethnic metal, which incorporates its own roots and culture in this way, is starting to be into the limelight?
【MANAPART】: There’s nothing new about adding folk to any kind of music.
Let’s break this down, at first there was folk (obviously), then people came up with some common music (once the music became global and possible to share/deliver to other people\countries\cultures), once it happened, people started adding one into another.
But yes, it wasn’t that popular. It’s possible that people want something ‘new’ and they find it in music that has some national flavors in it but at the same time doesn’t sound too ethnic.
Q8: 最近では、BLOODYWOOD や THE HU が母国の伝統音楽をメタルに取り入れることで大成功を収めました。あなたたちを含め、自国のルーツや文化を取り入れたフォーク／エスニック・メタルが脚光を浴び始めているのはなぜだと思いますか？
【MANAPART】: どんな音楽にもフォークを取り入れることに目新しさはないと思う。
なぜなら、当然のことだけど、もともと最初にフォークがあったからだ。それから人々が共通の音楽を考え出し、音楽がグローバルになり、他の人々や国、文化に共有／伝達できるようになると、人々は別の音楽やまたフォークを加え始めた。
でも、そうだね。人々が何か “新しい” ものを求めていて、それをある国のテイストがあり、同時にあまりエスニックに聞こえすぎない音楽に見出したという可能性はあるね。
