DISC REVIEW “ONRYO Ⅱ: HER SPIRIT ETERNAL”

SAIDAN “ONRYO Ⅱ: HER SPIRIT ETERNAL” 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH SAIDAN

Q1: When I first heard your music, I thought it was made by the Japanese. But, you are American, right? haha! First of all, could you tell us why you Started Saidan and why you named your band Saidan?

【SAIDAN】: Yes! We’re based out of Nashville, Tennessee! I started Saidan back in early 2020 as a way to deal with a lot of built up anger I had within myself after my father passed away. Eventually, once I dealt with some of those feelings, I changed my focus to writing about different horror stories, and folklore that I liked.
I originally thought about using the English word “Altar” because of the religious nature of the word. But seeing as there were tons of bands using that name already, and since I was starting to write about Japanese themes, I thought “Saidan” would make more sense.

Q2: Interestingly, Saidan’s music and concept are obviously heavily influenced by Kaidan, Yokai, Japanese ghost stories and horror movies, right? Why did you decide to feature Japanese horror stories?

【SAIDAN】: I mostly started writing about Japanese ghost stories, and horror movies, because reading, and watching them took my mind off of everything going on in my life at the time. And I felt like those themes, and stories weren’t really talked about in western music for the most part.

Q3: I understand that Western horror fits well with black metal, but I was surprised that Japanese horror stories, Kaidan fit so well with black metal! If not black metal, then Japan’s Ningen Isu is a wonderful blend of Japanese ghost stories and metal, though. You must have been convinced that black metal and ghost stories match, right? In your mind, which is scarier, Western or Japanese horror?

【SAIDAN】: Yes, I believe that ghost stories, and all forms of metal (especially Black Metal) will always work well together in some way. And as for which horror I think is scarier, I’d have to say Japanese horror. I think that has to do with not growing up with those stories, so the ideas are new, and different.
America used to have an obsession with remaking the famous Japanese horror films, and to me, they were never scary, because it placed those stories in our culture. To me what makes Japanese horror stand out, and what makes it scarier, is the differences in our surroundings, and cultures.

Q4: However, when I listen to your music, I get the feeling that it is not only black metal, but also Japanese rock or, more specifically, anime theme songs, right? It also matches wonderfully. Are you greatly influenced by Japanese music?

【SAIDAN】: Yes! I would say ALL Japanese music, especially Jrock, and Jpop are our biggest influences when it comes to melodies, and songwriting.
Bands like Balzac, Loudness, DOG inThe PWO, X Japan, Shinsei Kamattechan, Anthem. And some of the newer groups like Mrs. GREEN APPLE, DISH//, PassCode, Dizzy Sunfist, and YOASOBI. Plus tons of other artists, greatly influence my writing..
Japanese music has been a big influence on me ever since I heard “Loudness” when I was a little kid. I love it all so much!

Q5: Many of the Japan-loving artists I have interviewed say that video games were one of their entry points. How about you?

【SAIDAN】: I believe video games were my entry point too. The first time I was introduced to anything Japanese was probably playing “Metal Gear Solid” and “Metal Gear Solid 2” on PlayStation for the first time. And also I’d say Dragon Ball Z was a huge entry point too, as it was the first anime I had ever seen.

Q6: “Onryo II: Her Spirit Eternal” is a sequel to 2020’s “Onryo,” correct? What is the story?” Is it a different world from “Jigoku”?

【SAIDAN】: Yes, it’s the sequel to our first EP. back then I was just a solo artist, and used fake drums for all the drum parts. I knew I wanted to revisit the “Onryō” theme again after finally getting a real drummer, which I eventually got in December 2020.
The story of “Onryō II” is based off a local legend from where I’m from, called “The Bell Witch”. She was a spirit who supposedly haunted the Bell family in the year 1817. I thought this would work as an overarching story, since the bell witch would be considered an American “Onryō”. There’s other themes, and topics, on the album, but the main focus is “The Witch”..
“Jigoku” never had much of a story when it was being written. I wanted that album to be an introduction to our “new sound” with the added edition of my drummer “Shadosai” and slightly better production.

Q7: Interestingly, you used the sound of the movie “Ring” in “Yuki Onna”, right? Where did you come up with this idea?

【SAIDAN】: I’m glad you noticed that! I originally planned for that song to be about the “Ring” movie, but changed my mind during the writing process. Once I changed the theme to my own version of the “Yuki Onna” story, I decided to keep the “Ring” intro because I thought it sounded cool, and because I LOVE that movie, haha.

Q8: Some people say that the language barrier is the reason why Japanese rock, pop, visual kei, and metal music have not been able to achieve great success in the world. What do you think?

【SAIDAN】: I believe that could be one reason. But currently in the west, Kpop has become a huge genre on pop radio. And for the most part, there’s only a few English words in those songs. The difference in my opinion is Kpop is produced like western pop music. And most pop music fans don’t pay attention to the lyrics. they listen for the “vibe” or “beat”.. Japanese pop has its own style, and feel. It has its own unique chord progressions, and melodies. and for the most part, It still incorporates real instruments. Where as popular music in America is almost 100% “fake”. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it’s a shame. There’s so much good music in Japan, and my hope is one day it has a bigger audience in the west.
