WHITESNAKE を脱退した DOUG ALDRICH が NIGHT RANGER, DAMN YANKYS の歌って弾けるベーシスト、JACK BLADES, JOURNY, BAD ENGLISH の歌って叩けるドラマー、DEAN CASTRONOVO と結成した新バンド REVOLUTION SAINTS。 彼らのデビューシングル “TURN BACK TIME” が遂に発表となりました。誰が歌うのか？という点にも注目が集まりましたがこの新曲ではディーンがメインで歌ってジャックがヴァースやボーカルハーモニーを担当という形のようです。そもそも歌唱には定評のあるディーンですが STEVE PERRY 譲りの絶品のボーカルを披露しています。ダグのカッティングリフもキレキレで正統派メロディックロックの素晴らしさを凝縮したような曲ですね。デビューアルバム “REVOLUTION SAINTS” は 2/20 、日本では 2/18 に FRONTIER RECORDS から発売です！！
From the opening notes of “Back On My Trail” to the piano outro on the album-closer “In The Name Of The Father (Fernando’s Song),” it is clear Revolution Saints is a musical force to be reckoned with. Songs “Locked Out Of Paradise,” “Dream On” and “Here Forever” showcase the diversity that permeates throughout the entire album. Deen’s band mates from Journey also make an appearance on the album with guitarist Neal Schon showing up on “Way To The Sun” and vocalist Arnel Pineda singing on “You’re Not Alone.” The album’s 80’s vibe is reminiscent of some of the biggest hard rock tracks of the day, but with a modern feel, backed by top-level musicianship.
デビュー作 “REVOLUTION SAINTS” にはディーンのバンド JOURNEY からギタリストの NEAL SCHON が “WAY TO THE SUN” に、ボーカルの ARNEL PINEDA が “YOU’RE NOT ALONE” にそれぞれゲスト参加しています。トップレベルのミュージシャンシップに支えられたアルバムは 80年代のビッグなハードロックのヴァイブを残しつつそこにモダンな雰囲気も加わって完成しました。
KAL SWAN, DOUG ALDRICH, JERRY BEST, MARK EDWARDS という 80~90 年代のシーンにおいてそこそこ重要人物達を擁した悲運のバンド。何が悲運かは適当にググッて下さい。重要なのはカルとダグがこのアルバムでは非常に生き生きとしている事。
BAD MOON RISING – S/T
LION 解散後、ダグとカルの二人が結成したバンド。このアルバムはカルの歌唱が最大限生かされた英国の湿り気を帯びたメタルで実に素晴らしいです。グランジ/オルタナの台頭にしたがって徐々に彼らの音楽性も拡散して行きます。彼らの最終作 “OPIUM FOR THE MASSES” などはカルの歌唱力を生かしているとはお世辞にも言えませんがダグのギターはアイデア豊富でそれはそれで楽しめます。この後カルは音楽業を引退し、ダグは BURNING RAIN ~ WHITESNAKE, そして今に至ります。
HARDLINE – DOUBLE ECLIPSE
JOURNY 終了後、BAD ENGLISH で何か満たされなかった NEAL SCHON が新たに結成したバンド。ニール、ディーン以外にも JOHNNY GIOEL, TODD JENSEN というメロハー界隈ではそこそこ重要人物が参加しています。楽曲の出来はなかなか良いのですがニールのギタリストとしての良さを100%発揮しているかというと疑問です。ただこの曲は完璧な名曲。アーネル加入後の JOURNY がいかにロックとして素晴らしいかわかりますね。

Hello Marunouchi Muzik Magazine! I’m Nick Johnston and here are some of favorite records from 2014. There was so much amazing music released this year, so it was very difficult to narrow it down. However, these records seemed to want to stay in my stereo the longest, so I feel it is my duty as a music lover to put them on my list. Thank you so much for having me as a guest!

ニックはカナダ出身のギタリスト。”ATOMIC MIND” は彼の3枚目のフルアルバムです。リズム隊に THE ARISTOCRATS, JOE SATRIANIで知られる BRYAN BELLER, MARCO MINNEMANN を迎え名実共に彼の最高傑作として仕上がりました。今回選んでくれた10枚を見ても判りますが彼の幅広い音楽的素養をそのままアルバムに閉じ込めたかのようなカラフルさです。ジョー的な正統派ギターインスト、ガスリー譲りのサーフミュージック、アイリッシュトラッドから OPETH な雰囲気の曲まで実に多彩。シングルコイルが生み出す絶妙なトーンコントロールがメロディーの良さを一層際立たせています。YOUNG GUITAR にコラムも執筆中。そちらもぜひチェックを！！

I guess I want to thank Japanese fans for giving me the best tour and travel experience i’ve ever had in my entire life! I had so much fun playing in Tokyo and I made so many great friends 🙂 I am very thanksful. Also I am excited to release music with my band Covet and maybe return to Japan on tour!

Definitely could have been a n°1 if I hadn’t to choose a “classic” haha

Progressive metal trio, two 8 strings, one drummer… And what a drummer.
It’s probably n°1 in my mind thanks to Matt Garstka. Crazy skills.
You love gospel chops, ghost notes, crazy polyrhythmic grooves and double bass insanity over melodic and expressive guitar solos (at least tosin !), unreal djent riffs and brillant tones…
Basically Animals as Leaders got it all, all blended in one unique style alternating between metal, jazz and classical… Brilliant.

【ABOUT NAUSICAA AND MESSAGE FOR JAPAN】
“The album is inspired by 1984 Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece Nausicaä of the valley of the wind. We tried to create an image of Nausicaa a bit different, firstly to respect the master work because the original character is untouchable. It is a conceptual album based on the film and on the original movie score of Joe Hisaishi, we selected the music to perform and re-arranged all in our style. The album turned out as one long song made of 16 chapters. The album art shows a “grown up” Nausicaä in a post-atomic context, she has also developed some special faculties as the third eye. The reasons that led us to create this project are many, first of all to pass in a certain sense, the message of the work of the master Miyazaki based primarily on respect and love for nature, a message more relevant than ever in these times. The hate for the war and to all manifestations of hate and violence that still reduces men to beasts. Cooperation, the rediscovery of a life lived in a community whose life and whose work is in close relationship with the elements of nature. Today might sound almost like a utopian message, but we believe it is important to reiterate these concepts, especially for future generations, also because our generations are destroying any possibility of future created in harmony and peace. Our work is also a tribute to the great geniuses, Hayao Miyazaki, Joe Hisaishi, Studio Ghibli, a large team of artists who created masterpieces that will remain in time forever. We recently had news of the announced end of the career of the master Miyazaki, who gave us a last masterpiece like “The Wind Rises”, an incredible work of extreme beauty, also giving us a great picture of us Italians. This work is also a tribute to Japan, wonderful land of contrasts.

Swedish progressive-rockers Beardfish recently announced the release of their new album ‘+4626-COMFORTZONE’ for the 12th January 2015 in Europe. The band had this to say about the track: “Hold On was one of the first songs that came along for +4626-COMFORTZONE and it sort of set the mood for the rest of the album with the rhythm and the intertwined guitar riffs and melodies. The lyrics deal with trying to hang on to something that is slipping out of grasp and not being in connection with your inner self, to the point that you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror. A song that felt great right from the start and it still keeps getting better every time we play it live! Hope you’ll like it!”

Sweet & Lynch are releasing the first official video from their upcoming debut album, Only To Rise. The video is for the album opener “The Wish”. The video shows Michael Sweet and George Lynch performing the song together amongst imagery that corresponds with the song’s lyrics. The video was shot in Los Angeles and was directed by Devin DeHaven, known for his work with Rick Ross, Whitesnake, Kiss and R. Kelly to name a few.
“After almost a year of talking about the Sweet & Lynch album we’re extremely proud to premiere the first music video, The song takes you back to a time when guitar heroes ruled the airwaves and melodies soared. The thought was to bring back the late 70’s/early 80’s with a modern twist and remind people of one of the best eras in hard rock/metal. “I am thrilled with how this song came out. During the recording sessions for the album, I remember waking up one morning wondering what was going to happen that day and not having a clue what direction the album would take… and I was thinking, “Man, this is a grand experiment!”. And as I was lying there I thought of the chorus, but my original version was slower and more of a keyboard thing…then the band got to it and Mike had the rockin verse idea and it developed from there. The video was shot and edited by my son Chad. Hope you all like it!”
この曲が発表できてぞくぞくするほど嬉しいよ。アルバムのレコーディング中は朝起きて今日は何か起こるんだろうか、方向性の手がかりもないし・・・って思ったのを覚えているよ。それで考えたんだ、「これこそが A GRAND EXPERIMENT じゃないか！」ってね。横たわってコーラスを考えた。だけど私のオリジナルバージョンはスロウでもっとキーボード向きの曲だったんだ。バンドに渡したらマイク（ポートノイ）がロックなアイデアを加えて改良してくれたよ。このビデオは私の息子チャドが撮っているよ。気に入ってくれるといいね！

INSIDE OUT NEWS: NEAL MORSE BAND ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM “THE GRAND EXPERIMENT” ON 2/16
The Neal Morse Band are extremely pleased to announce the release of their new album ‘The Grand Experiment’ for the 16th February 2015 as well as a European tour for March 2015. For the first time ever prog icon Neal Morse came into a recording session with his long-time friend and collaborator Mike Portnoy, Randy George, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette…with NOTHING! He had no prepared material at all.
THE NEAL MORSE BAND は新作 “THE GRAND EXPERIMENT” を 2/16 にリリースします。参加メンバーは彼の長年の盟友 MIKE PORTNOY をはじめとして RANDY GEORGE, BILL HUBAUER, ERIC GILLETTE。レコーディングをセッションで行います。
Neal comments: “I wanted to see what it would be like to create freely in the room with no preconceived notions. It was quite a risk!” On previous albums, like the Testimony album for example, Morse had the entire album written in advance. “I used to be rather paranoid about whether things would turn out in the short space of time we had available…so I would fill all the space in advance!” This album was totally different. “I made a lot of room for the other guys to create and express themselves and the result is outstanding! We wanted to experiment, do something a bit different, and see what everyone is capable of…we found out…in SPADES!” The results are obvious! This was a “grand experiment” that produced something far beyond anyone’s expectations! The main disc, containing 5 tracks, 2 long prog epics that are sure to be favorites for years to come, as well as 3 shorter songs including the catchy rocking title track “The Grand Experiment” is sure to blow the minds of all prog fans and appeal to anyone who loves hooky song writing with virtuoso performances from some of the best musicians in the world. The Grand Experiment was mixed by Rich Mouser.

Four-and-a-half years in the making, »Beyond The Red Mirror« was recorded at Twilight Hall Studio in Grefrath, Germany and produced by Charlie Bauerfeind (SAXON, HAMMERFALL, HELLOWEEN). The album’s spellbinding tracks showcase BLIND GUARDIAN’s long-awaited collaborative work with three different classical choirs from Prague, Budapest, and Boston, plus two grand orchestras – each featuring 90 musicians. An endeavour demanding that attention be paid to the lyrics as much as to the music, »Beyond The Red Mirror« is a desperate search for truth, an exploration of the relativities of good and evil, a testimony of the consequences of lost opportunities, a glimpse into a distant universe’s dystopian society, and a story about a prophecy, a promise of revolution, a plot for revenge, and a miracle machine with powers far beyond what mere mortals could have dreamed possible.
前作から四年半の時間を経てリリースされる新作 BEYOND THE RED MIRROR は SAXON, HAMMERFALL, HELLOWEEN を手掛けた CHARLIE BAUERFEIND のプロデュースで録音されました。プラハ、ブタペスト、ボストンのコーラス隊と二つのオーケストラと共演し総勢90人のミュージシャンが参加しています。

“Heart Of Amsterdam is a tribute to the city of Amsterdam, the home town of the story’s leading character Susanne. Seventeenth-century Amsterdam was a centre of shipping, shipbuilding, and trade. Amsterdam flourished, and a wonderful city was the result. We shot the video in the centre of Amsterdam. It was freezing cold and I couldn’t move my fingers anymore during the last shots, but it was all worth it. I love how the video turned out!”
“HEART OF AMSTERDAM” はアムステルダムという街に対するトリビュートなの。ストーリーの主役、スザンヌの故郷でもあるわ。17世紀のアムスは航海、造船、交易の中心だったの。とても栄えていて素晴らしい街だったのね。アムスの中心で撮影したんだけど寒くて寒くて最後には指を動かす事も出来なかったくらいよ。でもやったかいがあったわ。このビデオが証明するはずよ。

Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine) & Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project) are set to release the debut album ‘The Diary’ from their new band The Gentle Storm on the 23rd March 2015, and now they are pleased to reveal the first music to be taken from the record!!
“Endless Sea is the album opener and it serves as an introduction to our story-based album. Susanne, the main character, sings about her busband Joseph, who has just sailed out on another long voyage to the Far East. We are very excited to offer everybody a first taste of our forthcoming album with the release of these lyric videos. This is such a special album to the both us.”
“ENDLESS SEA” はアルバムの開幕を飾ると同時にこのアルバムのストーリーを紹介する役割を担っているんだ。主役の SUSANNE が夫の JOSEPH について歌っているよ。彼は極東へ長い航海に出たばかりなんだ。僕たちはこのビデオでみんなに新作の雰囲気を伝える事が出来て興奮しているよ。二人にとってとても特別なアルバムだからね。
The album concept is a tale of love, loss, and separation told through the story of two fictional seventeenth-century lovers. A Dutch sailor embarks on a two-year voyage, leaving his wife at home in Holland. The only way for the couple to communicate and keep their love alive during the long separation is through letters. These letters form the basis for the songs on the album.
Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine) & Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project) have joined forces for new band The Gentle Storm, and they are extremely pleased to announce their debut album ’The Diary‘ will be released 23rd March 2015 in Europe.
AYREON で知られるオランダの長身元貴公子 ARJERN LUCASSEN と DEVIN TOWNSEND, THE GATHERING の美声ボーカル ANNKEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN が組んだ新バンドGENTLE STORM のデビュー作、 “THE DIARY”の発売が来年の 3/23 に決定しました！！
They are also pleased to announce that in advance of The Gentle Storm full band shows, Arjen will join Anneke for a select few European live acoustic dates in what will be quite a rare and special occasion.
同時に ARJEN がヨーロッパで行われるアコースティックライブに数回参加する事も発表されました。
Anneke had this to say:
“I’m very excited that Arjen has agreed to join me for these acoustic shows. I will play a solo set and halfway through the show Arjen will join me on stage. We’ll perform some Ayreon classics together and premiere a couple of songs that will be on our upcoming The Gentle Storm album. This will be a unique opportunity to catch us performing together and I look forward to sharing the stage with Arjen a lot!”
