【ABOUT TONY MILLS】

Q1: I’m very honor to talk with Grammy Winner. Thanks a lot for giving us this opportunity. Anyway, You have produced Tony Mills since he was in Shy. Is that one of the reason that you produce “Over My Dead Body”?

【NEIL】: Thank you very much for inviting me into your webzine. I am more than happy to do this. As you mentioned, I first produced Tony when he was singing with Shy, and then after that we sort of lost touch somehow. At the time of making “Excess All Areas” I was already living in New York, and the band was living in England, so we didn’t have any opportunities to sit down and talk about continuing that relationship further, although I think we were all quite happy with how EAA turned out. Years later someone in Shy told me that my manager had told the band that I wasn’t interested in producing the album after EAA (which I think was “Misspent Youth”) but I have no idea what happened there. My manager never told me that I had been asked me to work on that album. So, that’s how we drifted apart. I did end up working on another Shy album a few years later, but Tony was no longer in the band at that time. In the meantime, Tony had apparently tried to find me because he wanted to work with me on the Siam projects, but didn’t know how to reach me, I think. It wasn’t until fairly recently that we bumped into each other on Facebook, and started talking about actually working together again.

Q2: What is the strong point of this record?

【NEIL】: First of all, I’d have to say the songs. They are all really strong, and a lot of time has been put into them. Tony’s singing better than ever as well, so there’s lots to like on this album.

【ABOUT JAPANESE MUSIC】

Q1: Anyway, I am so surprised that you get into Japanese Music. How did you get involved with Japanese Music? And please tell us your favorite Japanese artists.

【NEIL】: I’ve been a fan of Japanese music for many years. Back in the ’70s I worked on an album with Stomu Yamash’ta, and also on a couple of albums with Joji Hirota, who are both percussionists. I really enjoyed those projects and I think that started my interest in Japanese music way back then. Over the years I have got more and more into the Japanese underground scene. I used to go to SXSW, which is a long-standing music event in Austin, Texas, and for me one of the absolute highlights was Japan Nite, which happened at a place called the Tropical Isle on the Friday night. Over the years, I saw many great bands there. I met people like Mad Capsule Markets, PUGS, O*N*T*J, Tengoku Jack, Cocco and lots of others.

MAD CAPSULE MARKETS

One of my favourite styles of Japanese music is probably the jazz / avant underground stuff – bands like Koenjihyakkei, Demi Semi Quaver, Happy Family, any others that had Hoppy Kamiyama (Ex-Girl, PUGS, O*N*T*J*,  or Yoshida Tatsuya involved in it (Ruins, Korekyojinn) I love Ishibashi Eiko as well, and also Ono Ryoko, who plays with Sax Ruins. There are many that I enjoy – Omoide Hatoba, Space Streakings, Panicsmile etc.

I like a lot of Japanese jazz / fusion stuff – bands like Exhivision, Fragile, Tipographica, older stuff like Suzuki Isao. I really like Hiromi, Kiyomi Otaka, Senri Kawaguchi, Ikue Mori etc.

HIROMI

I’m also a big fan of the punk / post-rock / shoegaze / electronic scene there, with bands like downy, Midori, Mass of Fermenting Dregs, BOaT, Natsumen, Nissenenmondai, Texas Pandaa, Serph, Anoice, OOIOO, World’s End Girlfriend, Toe, Mono etc.

Melt-Banana has been a favourite for years, along with noisier bands like Boredoms, Bondage Fruit, K.K. Null, Zeni Geva, Boris, Merzbow – the list goes on and on. There are a lot of great creative artists and bands in Japan that I would really love to have the opportunity to work with.

COCCO

Q2: You said you wanted to produce Japanese artist and to live in Tokyo. What’s the attraction of Japan and Japanese Music?

【NEIL】: I think that Japanese artists don’t tend to try to be like anyone else. That to me is the spirit of music, to be yourself, Individuality is very important in art. I grew up in London in the ’60s and ’70s, and things were really open and free like that back then, but slowly, over the years, I found that artists tended to become more copycats of other artists, rather than continuing to develop their own unique style and be confident in what they were doing. Toyko is a wonderful city, and I could imagine living and working there would be very exciting and stimulating. That said, I expect that the music scenes in other cities are probably very interesting as well. I know that Osaka has been known for its punk scene. I would love to spend time everywhere, and take it all in. It would be the experience of a lifetime for me.

【ABOUT HIS WORKS】

nk38118

Q1: So, let’s talk about your works. Dokken is still popular in Japanese Hard Rock fans. You produced “Under Lock and Key” and “Back for the Attack”. Don and George were on very bad terms. Is that not easy for you under that kind of situation?

【NEIL】: Those albums were great fun to work on musically, but Don and George not getting along very well did cause some problems and slowdowns here and there. We got through that though – just silly disagreements that ended up getting sorted out. I worked on the first Lynch Mob album as well, and in many ways that was quite  bit easier.

UNDER LOCK AND KEY”, “BACK FOR THE ATTACK” を手掛けていますね。

Q2: Do you remember Queensryche’s “Rage for Order”? You also played keyboard on that album. Were their music new to you at that time?

【NEIL】: Yes, Rage is still one of my favourite productions. I first heard Queensryche on the album “The Warning”, and I really liked what they were doing. I thought it was really ahead of its time, plus I liked the orchestral textures. When I hear that they were looking for a producer for their next album I contacted them immediately. I was asked to do Operation Mindcrime as well, but I was in the middle of Dokken’s “Back for the Attack” at the time, which was taking longer than planned, so I was unable to work on OM. That was very upsetting at the time, as RfO had really been a great record to make.

nkqueensryche-rage-for-order-20111127062543
