DISC REVIEW “ULTRAMAN EP / SYNCHRO ANARCHY”
「今世界には、気候、戦争、政治など常に緊張感がある。日本はそれをよく理解しているはずなんだ。SF は時に僕たちが考えるよりも現実に近い。だからこそ、僕たちは皆、テレビの中のウルトラマンが勝利を収めることを望んでいたんだよね。そこに現実世界を重ねているから」
ピコン・ピコン・ピコン・ピコン…私たちは皆子供の頃、ウルトラマンの胸で輝くカラータイマーの点滅が加速するたび、スリルと心配で手に汗を握り、勝利を願いながらテレビにかじりついたものでしょう。もちろん、頭では “これは現実ではない” と理解していても、あの SF 怪奇大作戦に心がのめり込むのは “もしかすると現実でも起こり得る” そんな潜在的な不安と恐怖、そして共感をウルトラマンの巧みな設定やストーリー、そして音楽が掻きたてたから。そして、SF メタルの第一人者 VOIVOD は、今、この暗い時代にこそウルトラマンが必要だと誰よりも深く理解しているのです。
「僕たちは皆、ケベック州（カナダのフランス語圏）で翻訳されたフランス語版のウルトラマンを見て育ったんだ。オリジナル・シリーズ、音楽、怪獣、ベータ・カプセル…カラータイマーがどんどん早くなる時の緊張感…など、ウルトラマンはここケベックで知るものとは全く違っていて、新しい種類の冒険に心を開いてくれたんだよ」
なぜ今、VOIVOD がウルトラマンに着目し、テーマソングをカバーすることに決めたのか。理由は大きく二つ。一つは子供の頃からのヒーローだから。VOIVOD のメンバーはカナダ出身ですが、全員がフランス語圏のケベックで育ちました。日本の特撮やアニメの需要が高いフランス語圏において、彼らがウルトラマンやキャプテン・ハーロック、グレンダイザーをヒーローとして育ったことはある意味自然な成り行きでした。音楽産業がパンデミックや戦争で危機に瀕した時、ウルトラマンの登場を願うことも。
メンバーの中でも特に日本通、Dan “Chewy” Mongrain にとって、コロナ・ウィルスは怪獣に見えたのです。そして、ウルトラマンがその “怪獣コロナ” を一撃必殺のスペシューム光線で粉砕することを願いながら、ウルトラマンのテーマをアレンジしていったのです。そう、VOIVOD にとって光の戦士はまさに希望の象徴でした。
「このパンチの効いた不協和音はまさに VOIVOD のサウンドみたいだよね (笑) もしかするとオリジナル・ギタリストの Piggy は、ウルトラマンの音楽から影響を受けて初期の VOIVOD の音楽を作っていたのかもしれないね！ドラムの Away は僕のデモを聴いて、”うわっ！完全に VOIVOD だ！”と言っていたよ」
もう一つの理由は、純粋にウルトラマンのテーマがあまりに VOIVOD らしい楽曲だったから。それは Chewy が、前任のギタリストでバンドの支柱だった Piggy が、ウルトラマンのサウンドトラックから影響を受けたと推測するほどに。もちろん、半分は冗談でしょうが、SF マニアだった Piggy のことです。絶対にありえない話ではないでしょう。それほどに、ウルトラマンのテーマソング、そこに宿るブラスやオーケストレーション、そして不協和は解体してみれば実に VOIVO-DISH な姿をしています。
実際、VOIVOD は今が絶頂かと思えるほどに充実しています。40年にわたり SF プログレッシブ・スラッシュの王者として君臨してきた彼らは、1987年の3rd “Killing Technology” でこのスタイルを確立しましたが、メンバーの満ち引きを繰り返しながらその独自の方式に繰り返し改良を加えてきました。変幻自在にタイトでトリッキー、そしてフックの詰まった最新フル “Synchro Anarchy” は、まさにバンドが最高の状態にあることを示しています。
冒頭から、威風堂々圧倒的に異世界なギターリフ、近未来の激しいパーカッション、クセの強いディストピアンなボーカルが炸裂し、VOIVOD らしい歓迎すべきねじれた雰囲気を確立。 VOIVOD の愛する黙示録的な高揚感を完璧に体現しています。一方で、反復する心地よいハーモニーの催眠効果、不規則なサイクルと唐突な場面転換で、さながらフランク・ザッパのように VOIVOD は自由自在にメロディック・プログレッシブの地平も制覇していきます。
VOIVOD がただ、直接的な “苛酷” のみに止まらないのは、リスナーにポジティブなオーラ、夢や希望、ひと時でも現実を忘れる娯楽を提供するため。そうして彼らは、”Synchro Anarchy” と “Ultraman EP” の連作において見事にその目的を達成しました。ウルトラの父がいる。ウルトラの母がいる。そして “忠威” がここにいる。
今回弊誌では、Dan “Chewy” Mongrain にインタビューを行うことができました。「僕たちがしようとしたことは、皆を喜びやポジティブな気持ちをもたらすものに集中させること。悪い時は過ぎ去り、きっと良い日はやってくる。だからお互いに助け合い、一緒にメタルを歌おうよ! メタルは最もオープンなコミュニティーの一つだ。人はここに集まり、楽しみ、そしてつながっていく！ 僕たちは皆、自分なりの方法で誰かのウルトラマンになろうと努力できるし、お互いに助け合うことができるんだよ！」 ３度目の登場。感謝。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH DAN “忠威” MONGRAIN
Q1: This will be my first interview with you in three years. The world has changed dramatically since then with wars and pandemics, how did you perceive those changes?
【CHEWY】: おはようまるのうちさん。Indeed the wolrd has changed, the world is in a non-stop evolution, like nature, the universe, I think we have to adapt to the situations and try to do our best. Challenge brings creativity and tensions eventually lead to connection. It is a scary era we live in, but I think we have to keep hope and work hard and try to make things positive.
Q1: 三年ぶりのインタビューです。戦争やパンデミックで、あれから世界は大きく変化しました。あなたはそうした変化をどう受け止めていましたか？
【CHEWY】: おはよう、まるのうちさん！世界は確かに変化し、自然や宇宙のように絶え間なく進化している。挑戦は創造性をもたらし、緊張はやがてつながりへと変わっていくよ。たしかに恐ろしい時代だけど、それでも希望を持ち、前向きに頑張っていくしかないよね。
Q2: Your release this year, “Synchro Anarchy,” has been so critically acclaimed that it’s been nominated for best of the year in various places! Looking back, could you tell us about the meaning of that album and the new challenges you took on?
【CHEWY】: Thanx! We composed, recorded and mix the album in a very intense way, we could not have access to our jam space so Away and I exchange files through internet and couls build the structures of the songs from Ideas that I had recorded from early 2020. Away would put together the Ideas that seemed to fit together and programmed the drums with his computer. Then I would re-work on the ideas and arrangements. Some of the songs had Guitar Ideas with parts containing only drums Ideas, so it was a challenge to compose music for the drum parts. I would also very often imagine the bass part so I wrote a lot of the bass part on this album. Rocky played them great and he wrote some of his part as well and a few ideas in some songs. At the end we could meet in the studio to try to play some of the parts together and it helped changing some details and Snake could try some melodies on the songs. He then wrote the lyrics while we were recording the songs. But we never really could play the songs and jam them as finished pieces. It was all done from Away and I demos.
It was very intense, I almost lost my health and I had to take a break after it was completely done. But we gave everything we could to make it the best record we could and I feel that’s what we did! I remember snake writiting his lyrics in the studio while Rocky and I would finish our parts and solos. Then Snake would go and record hi new vocals. We helped each other and Francis Perron at Radicart Studio helped us a lot with making it happen, he worked even harder than us because he was there the whole time, listening to the mix and songs and already working on the mix in his head. So we worked very hard and we are proud we did!
Q2: 今年 VOIVOD がリリースした素晴らしき “Synchro Anarchy” は各所で絶賛され、すでに年間ベストにも挙がりつつありますね！
【CHEWY】: Thanx! このアルバムの作曲、録音、ミキシングはとても集中的に行われたんだ。パンデミックでジャム・スペースにアクセスできないから、Away と僕はインターネットを通じてファイルを交換し、僕が2020年初頭から録音していたアイデアから曲の構造を構築していった。Away がそこに合いそうなアイデアをまとめ、コンピュータでドラムのプログラミングをする。その後、僕がそのアイデアやアレンジを練り直す。曲によってはギターのアイデアだけのパートがあるので、ドラムのパートを作曲するのには苦労したよ。
また、今回はベース・パートをイメージすることが多かったから、このアルバムで僕はベース・パートも多く書いたんだ。それを Rocky が素晴らしいプレイで料理し、彼自身もパートもいくつか書いて、曲によってはアイデアも少し入れているね。
最後にスタジオで一緒に演奏して、細かい部分を変えたり、Snake がメロディーを試したりすることができたんだ。そして、レコーディング中に彼が歌詞を書いていった。でも、完成した曲を演奏してジャムることはできなかったんだ。つまり、全ては Away と僕のデモから始まったわけだよ。
レコーディングはとても大変で、体調を崩しそうになり、完全に終わってから休まざるを得なかった。でも、最高のレコードにするために全力を尽くしたし、それができたと思っているよ。Snake がスタジオで歌詞を書いている間に、Rocky と僕は自分たちのパートとソロを仕上げたのを覚えているよ。それから Snake が新しいボーカルを録音するんだ。彼はずっとその場にいて、ミックスや歌を聴きながら、頭の中でミックスを練っていたから、僕らよりももっと一生懸命に働いていたよ。だから、僕たちはとても頑張ったし、それができたことを誇りに思っているんだ。
Q3: Still, I’m surprised you guys would cover Japanese Ultraman! Where did that idea start?
【CHEWY】: I think that was my Idea from the Start, It was even before we wrote anything for Synchro Anarchy, I was in my little work space and thought about doing an arrangement for Ultraman, that would be cool!
We all grew up with a translated French Version of Ultraman in Quebec (French province of Canada) and it was really different than all the things we knew here it was fantastic, the original series , the music, the monsters and the Beta Capsule…the tension of when the beeper goes faster and faster…It really opened our minds to a new kind of adventures. The song was in French and we grew with this version, But I wanted also to put a Japanese verse because we wanted to pay tribute to the original, and also an English verse because it was also translated in English in Canada and the USA. So we did different Versions, I sang all the Japanese parts because I know a little bit of Japanese, and the pronounciation. Snake sang the French and English parts. It was really fun to do but we felt the song was too short. So I used the Victory theme and arranged it in the middle. Because the Victory theme was on a different publishing right, we could not put the 3 parts of our medley together in a digital format but to divide it in 3 different parts. But on the vinyl it all follow one another as it was arranged. It was great to do and we all felt that we needed Ultraman during the pandemic!
I would have love to see Ultraman fight monster Covid! So Ultraman gave us hope! We decided to record it while recording Synchro Anarchy. But I did the arrangement in 2020 before writing the album.
Q3: それにしても、VOIVOD が日本のウルトラマンをカバーした EP を出すとは驚きましたよ！このアイデアはどこから始まったのですか？
【CHEWY】: 僕のアイデアが発端だと思う。実は、”Synchro Anarchy” のための曲を作る前から、小さな作業スペースでウルトラマンのアレンジをすることを考えていたんだ。きっとクールだろうなって！
僕たちは皆、ケベック州（カナダのフランス語圏）で翻訳されたフランス語版のウルトラマンを見て育ったんだ。オリジナル・シリーズ、音楽、怪獣、ベータ・カプセル…カラータイマーがどんどん早くなる時の緊張感…など、ウルトラマンはここケベックで知るものとは全く違っていて、新しい種類の冒険に心を開いてくれたんだよ。
テーマ曲はフランス語で、僕たちはこのバージョンを聴いて育った。だけど僕は、オリジナルに敬意を表するために日本語の歌詞も入れたかったし、カナダとアメリカでは英語で翻訳されたので英語の歌詞も入れたいと思ったんだよね。僕は日本語の発音が少し分かるから、日本語のパートは全て僕が歌ったよ。Snake はフランス語と英語のパートを歌ったね。
とても楽しい作業だったけど、曲の長さが短すぎる気がしたんだ。そこで、”勝利” のテーマを使って、中盤にアレンジすることにした。”勝利” のテーマは版権元が違うので、メドレーの3つのパートをデジタルフォーマットでまとめることができず、3つのパートに分けることになったけどね。だけどレコードでは、アレンジされた通り、すべてが互いに続いている。素晴らしい試みで、パンデミックにはウルトラマンが必要だ！ということを実感したよ！
僕は結局、ウルトラマンが “怪獣コロナ” と戦うところが見たかったんだと思う。そして、ウルトラマンは僕たちに希望を与えてくれた！だから、”Synchro Anarchy” のレコーディング中に収録することにしたんだけど、アレンジはアルバムを作る前の2020年にはすでに終わっていたんだよ。
Q4: Did you actually grow up watching Ultraman? What Japanese TV shows, anime, and movies do you like?
【CHEWY】: Yes we did, Snake, Away remember when ther had Black and white TV, and a few years later (because I’m younger) it was still playing and my brother and I were really impressed with Ultraman!
In Quebec we had all king of anime translated in French, We really loved, “Goldorak” which is originally called “Grendizer” (form Go Nagai) in Japan and also Capitain Harlocl (from Leiji Matsumoto). The music and stories we’re more complexe than our own anime here and it was fascinating! I also remember キャプテン・フューチャー we called Capitaine Flam here. It really worked on aour imagination!
Later I watched some more adult anime with very very complex stories, I don’t remember the titles but a friend of mine had a collection of anime. So I watched a few, but I had to make room for guitar and music so I don’t watched many hours of series nowadays.
Q4: なるほど、ウルトラマンで育ったんですね？他にも、気に入っている日本のアニメや映画はありますか？
【CHEWY】: そうなんだ。Snake と Away はまだ白黒テレビだったころを覚えているそうだよ。少し若い僕が見始めたのは数年後だけど、再放送がやっていて、兄と僕はウルトラマンにとても感動していたんだ。
実はケベック州では、あらゆるアニメがフランス語に翻訳されていてね。日本では “グレンダイザー” と呼ばれている “ゴルドラック”（永井豪監督）や “キャプテン・ハーロック”（松本零士監督）がとても好きだったよ。音楽もストーリーも、僕たちが見ているアニメより複雑で、とても魅力的だったからね！あと、”キャプテン・フューチャー” は、こちらでは “キャプテン・フラム” と呼んでいたね。とても想像力をかきたてられる作品だったよ！
その後、タイトルは忘れたけど、友人が持っていたアニメのコレクションで、とても複雑なストーリーの大人向けアニメをいくつか観ていった。でも、ギターと音楽のために時間を確保しなければならなくなったから、残念ながら最近は何時間もアニメを見ることはなくなってしまったよ。
Q5: But it is a very VOIVOD theme, I think. Science fiction is inseparable from the band, would you agree?
【CHEWY】: Totally, and that the main reason we did the Ultraman cover, because I thought it was the perfect fit, and that we all knew about it from our childhood! We wanted to celebrate the amazing work of the people who created it Eiji Tsuburaya and the composer Kunio Miyauchi
, the music is great through the series, not only the theme but all the parts that makes the situation dangerous and the fights more stressful ! There is always a tension in the world about climate, war, politics, Japan knows really well about it, science fiction sometimes is closer to reality than we think, we all hoped Ultraman could come and save the day!.
Q5: ただ、ウルトラマンは SF という意味でもとても VOIVOD らしいテーマですよね？
【CHEWY】: 間違いないね！ウルトラマンのカバーを制作したのは、実際僕たちに完璧にフィットすると思ったからだよ！子供の頃からよく知っているわけだからね！そうして、円谷英二さんとコンポーザーである宮内國郎さんの素晴らしい仕事を称えたかった。
このテーマだけでなく、危険な状況や戦いをより緊張感のあるものにしてくれる音楽は、シリーズを通して素晴らしいものだった。今世界には、気候、戦争、政治など常に緊張感がある。日本はそれをよく理解しているはずなんだ。SF は時に僕たちが考えるよりも現実に近い。だからこそ、僕たちは皆、テレビの中のウルトラマンが勝利を収めることを望んでいたんだよね。そこに現実世界を重ねているから。
Q6: The song is also very VOIVOD-like. Perhaps you were surprised by the music, which is more technical and complex than you expected?
【CHEWY】: At first it sounds like a school song, with an American surf vibe. But the arppegios, arrangement with a small orchestra, brass section punches, there is more complex stuff going on . I had to work hard on my guitar part to include all the important notes of the orchestra. And some of the brass line. And it has that dissononant punch that sounds like Voivod music haha, Maybe Piggy (original guitar player) got the music of Ultraman to influence Voivod’s music in his early days! When Away(drums) heard my demo, he was saying “ wow that fits Voivod perfectly!” haha.
Q6: 楽曲も非常に VOIVOD らしい仕上がりになりました。思ったよりも複雑な楽曲で驚いたのではないですか？
【CHEWY】: 最初はアメリカのサーフの雰囲気が漂う “校歌” のような感じだと思っていた。でもこの曲には、アルペジオや小編成のオーケストラとのアレンジ、ブラスセクションのパンチなど、もっと複雑なものがあるんだ。オーケストラの重要な音をすべて盛り込むために、ギター・パートには苦労したよ。ブラス・ラインの一部もね。
それにしても、このパンチの効いた不協和音はまさに VOIVOD のサウンドみたいだよね (笑) もしかするとオリジナル・ギタリストの Piggy は、ウルトラマンの音楽から影響を受けて初期の VOIVOD の音楽を作っていたのかもしれないね！ドラムの Away は僕のデモを聴いて、「うわっ！完全に VOIVOD だ！」と言っていたよ。
Q7: The Japanese part was so good I was surprised! Media says many things about you singing or you taught Snake, but what is the truth? Either way, your Japanese has improved considerably, hasn’t it?
【CHEWY】: Thank you so much, I sang the Japanese part, as I speak a bit Japanese already, it was easier for me and I really wanted to do a whole Japanese version with the 3 verses to pay tribute to the original song.
In French and English there was only 1 verse. I woked hard to make it sound the best I could, But I’m not a singer and I’m not Japanese so ごめんなさい下手ですけど頑張った！みんなと一緒に歌いましょうね。いっしょに頑張ろう！
Q7: あなたの日本語ボーカルを聴けば、多くの人があなたの日本語はさらに上達したと感じるでしょうね！(笑)
【CHEWY】: ありがとう！僕はまあ少しは日本語を話せるからそんなに大変ではなかったし、原曲に敬意を表して、3つのヴァースからなる日本語バージョンをどうしてもやりたかった。フランス語と英語では、1つのヴァースしかやっていないからね。
まあでも、僕はシンガーではないし、日本人でもないからベストを尽くすしかなかったよ。ごめんなさい下手ですけど頑張った！みんなと一緒に歌いましょうね。いっしょに頑張ろう！
Q8: In these dark times, many people may wish they had an Ultraman. Can music, heavy metal, take the place of Ultraman for them?
【CHEWY】: I think so!, Anything that gives you hope has the same symbolic. I think that’s we tried to do, focus on something which bring you joy and positive. Bad times are going to pass and better days will come.
Let’s help each other and sing together! Metal is one of the most open community, people gather and have fun, they connect! We all can try to be ultraman in our own ways and help each other!
Q8: 仰るように、この暗い時代に、もしウルトラマンがいたらと願う人は多いでしょう。音楽は、ヘヴィ・メタルは彼らにとってのウルトラマンになれるでしょうか？
