NORWEGIAN LEGEND IS BACK!! ARCTURUS HAS JUST RELEASED ULTRA COSMIC ALBUM “ARCTURIAN”!!
ノルウェーが誇るアヴァン･プログ･シンフォニック･ブラックメタル ARCTURUS。2007年の解散を経て2011年に再結成、今年遂に2005年の “SIDESHOW SYMPHONIES” 以来10年ぶりの新作 “ARCTURIAN” をリリースしました。彼らにしか作り得ない暗黒宇宙絵巻で実に素晴らしい作品だと思います。
そもそも EMPEROR や ULVER といったブラックメタルのメンバーが集結したスーパーバンド的立ち位置だった ARCTURUS ですが、アルバムを重ねる毎に既存のブラックメタルから脱却。前作の “SIDESHOW SYMPHONIES” ではボーカルがやや猟奇的な GARM から、同様にオペラティックながらよりメロディックに歌い上げる ICS VORTEX に代わったこともあり、独自の”宇宙メタル”は浮遊感とキャッチーさを併せ持った形で完結したように思えました。
ただ、前衛性や奇怪さを極めた2nd “LA MASQUERADE INFELNAL” や、インダストリアル/エレクトロニカ風味が強く感じられるアヴァン･プログ･シンフォニック･ブラックメタル史に残る大名盤である3rd “THE SHAM MIRRORS” も勿論素晴らしかった訳で、彼らが再び集結してどのような方向性に進むのか、長いインターバルを経た新作” Arcturian” には大きな注目が集まっていたのです。
結論から言うと3rdから前作への流れをそのまま踏襲した正統進化盤だと感じました。アルバム１枚がまるで１曲のような統一感。大まかに記すと2ndのオペラ感覚、3rdのインダストリアル/エレクトロニカ、前作のキャッチーさといった各作品の特徴を見事に抽出して、宇宙の果てでレコーディングしたような傑作です。
特に ICS VORTEX の歌唱は白眉。作品のドラマ性を高めることに大きく寄与しています。ICS VORTEX はもちろん ex-DIMMU BOUGIR で BORKNAGAR にも所属するノルウェー界隈では超売れっ子シンガー。まだまだ日本ではその実力に見合った評価を得られていないような気がします。
快くインタビューを引き受けていただいたのでソロキャリア、そして IHSAHN, TRYM,その他ノルウェーのビッグネームたちが集結したプロジェクト GOD OF ATHEISTS の予定も尋ねてみました。どうぞ！！

【INTERVIEW WITH ICS VORTEX】
Q1: ARCTURUS’s new album “Arcturian” is just released! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: Feeling excited and happy. The reactions from press and fans has been overwhelmingly positive.
Q1: 新作 “ARCTURIAN” がリリースされましたね！！今はどういったお気持ちですか？ また反響はいかがですか？
【 ICS VORTEX 】: 興奮しているし嬉しいよ。プレスやファンからの反響も想像以上にポジティブだよ。
Q2: Your last album “Sideshow Symphonies” was released on 2005. And you disbanded on 2007. So, would you tell us the reason of reunion and releasing new album?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: In 2007 we felt burnt out and not inspired to start working on a new record. To go in the studio and produce somthing less than 100% was not an option. For a band to deliver you need inspiration and good vibes. We felt cutting it clean was the best option for the legacy of Arcturus. We where pretty sure the fiery passion would come back at a later stage and without any pressure we waited to the time was right.
Q2: 前作 “SLIDESHOW SYMPHONIES” は2005年にリリースされ、ARCTURUS は2007年に一度解散しました。再結成と新作リリースの理由を教えてください。
【 ICS VORTEX 】: 2007年に僕たちは燃え尽きたと感じていて新作を作る気になれなかったんだ。100％じゃない状態でスタジオに入って何かを制作するのは良い考えではないよね。バンドにはインスピレーションと良いヴァイブが必要だよ。ARCTURUS の過去の栄光のためにも止めることがベストな選択だと思ったんだ。ただ後に燃えるような情熱が戻ってくる確信はあったから、適切な時期をプレッシャーのない状態で待つことにしたんだ。
Q3: Anyway, what’s “Arcturian”? Does it relate to the man in the artwork? Would you tell us concept or lyrical theme of the album?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: Arcturian is a nickname for both band members and fan base alike. I feel it symbols the heart of the band and it’s core. The lyrics are much about the same topics as Sideshow Symphonies. I write about personal incidents from my time under the influence of mind warping drugs, or stories about friends of mine, their downfall or struggles. I try to keep it close, unsentimental and without judgement or praise. I wrap the text in fitting metaphors from the bands obvious starry backdrop to get the Arcturus feel .
Q3: 新作のタイトルでもある “ARCTURIAN” とは何でしょう？アルバムのコンセプトを教えてください。
【 ICS VORTEX 】: “ARCTURIAN” とはバンドメンバーとファンベースのニックネームみたいなものさ。それこそがバンドのハートで核となる部分を象徴していると感じたんだ。歌詞は “SIDESHOW SYMPHONIES” とほぼ同じ題材を扱っているよ。僕自身の個人的な出来事や友達の話だよ。そういった題材を、評価や賛辞を加えることなくありのままセンチメンタルにならないように表現しようとしているんだ。ARCTURUS の感覚に合うよう比喩を使ったりしながらね。
Q4: ARCTURUS has changed it’s musical style on each albums. What did you aim for on “Arcturian”? How did you progressed from “Slideshow Symphonies”?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: We had no goals to start with other than make the best out of the core riffs we produce between us .
Q4: ARCTURUS はアルバム毎に音楽性を変えてきました。今回目指したものは何でしょう？
【 ICS VORTEX 】: 核となるリフから最高のものを作ろうとしているだけで初めからゴールを設定したりはしていないよ。
Q5: Do you think ARCTURUS still involved in Black Metal? What is the suitable expression for ARCTURUS? Prog, Symphonic, Avant-garde?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: I have settled for Avant-garde. We carry the legacy of BM deep within.
Q5: ARCTURUS は今でもブラックメタルに繋がりがあると思いますか？ARCTURUS のジャンルは何でしょう？
【 ICS VORTEX 】: AVANT-GARDE でいいんじゃないかなあ。BLACK METAL の遺産は内深くに受け継いでいるよ。
Q6: Anyway, you’ve been involved in lots of bands, projects. BORKNAGAR set to release new record. Would you tell us about that?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: We have just finished recording the album. It will be vocal heavy and old school fans will like the session comeback of Garm. I know I do:) In my opinion he has done some fantastic lines on the upcoming album and I just can’t get some of the vocals out of my head. It was fun to record and it will be out in late October I think.
Q6: あなたは他にも様々なバンド、プロジェクトに関わっていますね。BORKNAGAR も新作をリリースするようですが？
【 ICS VORTEX 】: うん、ちょうどアルバムのレコーディングを終えたところだよ。GARM がセッション参加で戻ってきているからへヴィーでオールドスクールなボーカルのファンは喜ぶだろうね。彼は新作にいくつかファンタスティックなボーカルラインを加えてくれているよ。僕の中からは出てこなかったようなね。レコーディングは楽しかったし、たぶん10月の末にはリリースされると思うよ。
Q7: I love your solo career, and “Storm Seeker” was really great album. How is your new solo record going? And would you tell us your other projects like God of Atheists?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: I have five songs finished and riffs enough to fill five albums. My time is split between so many projects, day job and family it is moving slow now. I have made Arcturus my number one priority so it is possible there will be a new Arcturus album out before I get to release another ICS Vortex album. I’m not sure though. I feel very inspired these days. Perhaps there is room for both. God Of Atheists is pretty much finished and I hope it will be released this year as well.
Q7: ソロアルバム、”STORM SEEKER” も素晴らしい出来でした。ソロキャリアの方はどうなっていますか？また GOD OF ATHEISTS のような他のプロジェクトについても話していただけますか？
【 ICS VORTEX 】: ５曲終わらせたところさ。リフだけならアルバム５枚分あるよ。様々なプロジェクト、昼間の仕事、家族といったものにも時間を割かなければならないから、ソロキャリアはゆっくりとしか出来ないんだ。ARCTURUS は僕のナンバー1プライオリティだから、次の ARCTURUS の作品が出るまでにはリリース出来るんじゃないかな。たぶんだけど。最近はとてもインスパイアされることが多いから２つをやる余裕はおそらくあるよ。GOD OF ATHEISTS はほとんど完成しているから、今年中にリリース出来ればいいなあ。
Q8: Who do you respect as a singer, as a bassist, and as a composer?
【 ICS VORTEX 】: Carl Michael Eide is my favorite composer by far. His riffs in Virus are so far away from anything else and in my opinion brilliant.Cliff Burton and Geezer Butler are along with Steve Harris my fav bass players. Mike Patton , Ozzy, Blackie, Bruce and Paul Stanley not to forget Lane Sanley hvae my uttermost respect as vocalists .
Q8: シンガーとして、ベーシストとして、コンポーザーとして尊敬するアーティストを教えてください。
【 ICS VORTEX 】: コンポーザーは CARL MICHAEL EIDE がフェイバリットだよ。VIRUS での彼のリフワークは誰にも到達出来ない素晴らしいものだったと思うんだ。ベーシストとしては CLIFF BURTON, GEEZER BUTLER が STEVE HARRIS と並んでフェイバリットだよ。MIKE PATTON, OZZY, BLACKIE LAWLESS, BRUCE DICKINSON, PAUL STANLEY, そして LAYNE STALEY は忘れてはならないね。彼らが尊敬する最高のシンガーたちだよ。

【MESSAGE FOR JAPAN】
I sincerely hope to visit Japan again in the near future. If not as an artist I will come as a tourist just to enjoy the best food in the world and experience your culture once again. It has been 13 years since I visited Tokyo and Osaka with Dimmu and to me it’s still stand out as the single most interesting country I have ever been lucky to visit.
近い将来、心からもう一度日本を訪れたいと思っているんだ。たとえアーティストとしてではなくとも、１旅行者として世界で最高の食べ物を楽しんだり日本の文化をもう一度経験するために行きたいんだ。DIMMU で東京と大阪を訪れてからもう13年になるんだね。幸せなことに様々な国を訪ねてきたけど、今でも日本は最も興味深い国として僕の中で際立っているんだ。
