メジャーレーベル INSIDE OUT からデビュー作をリリースし、将来を嘱望されたモダンプログバンド THE SAFTEY FIRE。突然の解散を表明したのは今年の７月のことでした。惜しむ間もなくバンドのギターチーム DERYA と JOAQUIN は GOOD TIGER という新バンドを結成しました。発表されたメンバーは２人に加えて ex-TesseracT の ELIOT COLEMAN, ex-FACELESS の ALEX RUDINGER という強力な布陣で、新たなスーパーバンドの誕生と言えると思います。11月にリリースされるデビュー作からファーストシングル “SNAKE OIL” が公開されましたが、メンバー各自が以前所属していたバンドたちの音像とは少し異なっていて非常に面白いと感じました。CONVERGE のようなカオティックなエナジー、THE MARS VOLTA のような知的な躍動感、そして MASTODON のようなへヴィーでプログレッシブなリフを兼ね備えた新しいサウンドには期待感しかないですね。今回弊誌ではバンドの中心人物である DERYA NAGLE に GOOD TIGER としては世界初インタビューを行うことに成功しました。
【INTERVIEW WITH DERYA NAGLE】
Q1: At first, lots of fans are surprised at The Safety Fire’s end. What happened to the band?
【DERYA】: Everyone was in a different place in their life and not everyone wanted to continue making music anymore. That wasn’t the case for me, so I needed to start something new to have a proper outlet.
Q1: まずは多くのファンが THE SAFTEY FIRE の解散には驚いたと思います。バンドに何が起こったのですか？
【DERYA】: 全員がその人生の中で違う場所にいるようになって、全員ではないけれどこれ以上音楽を作りたくないと思うようになってしまったんだよ。僕はそうじゃなかったから、新しくて適切な表現の場所が必要だったんだ。
Q2: Anyway, you and Joaquin has just started new band Good Tiger. Elliot is ex-TesseracT, Alex is ex-Faceless. So, Good Tiger is definitely super band. How did the band start?
【DERYA】: Myself and Joaquin have known Elliot, Alex and Morgan for a number of years. We have toured with them all, and knew what amazing musicians they all were. Once TSF came to an end, we reached out to these guys first to see if they would be interested, and luckily they were. It has been a really exciting process writing with new people .
Q2: 仰る通り、THE SAFTEY FIRE のあなたと JOAQUIN は GOOD TIGER という新バンドを結成しました。他のメンバーも ex-TesseracT の ELIOT, ex-FACELESS の ALEX とまさにスーパーバンドと呼ぶに相応しいメンツです。バンドはどのように始まったのですか？
【DERYA】: 僕と JOAQUIN は ELIOT, ALEX, MORGAN を何年も前から知っていたんだ。全員とツアーをしたこともあるから彼らが驚くべきミュージシャンであることも知っていたよ。THE SAFTEY FIRE が終焉を迎えてすぐ、僕たちは彼らに１番最初に興味があるか聞いてみたんだ。幸運なことに全員が興味を示してくれたね。新しいメンバーと作曲を行うのは本当にエキサイティングだったよ。
Q3: What does Good Tiger mean? Why did you choose it as new band name?
【DERYA】: It doesn’t really mean anything. We were discussing band names for quite some time, and that was the one that stuck. I think we all liked the fact you wouldn’t be able to assume what kind of music we play just from seeing the name. And it’s positive and tough at the same time! .
Q3: バンド名の GOOD TIGER にはどういった意味が込められていますか？なぜこの名前を選んだのでしょう。
【DERYA】: 別に特別な意味はないんだ。何度かバンド名について話し合ったんだけど、この名前が１番引っかかったんだよ。名前を見ただけではどんな音楽をやっているか見当も付かないところが全員気に入ったんだと思う。ポジティブでタフな名前だしね！
Q4: So, I heard your debut song “Snake Oil”. That’s really cool. I feel it has Converge, The Mars Volta, and Mastodon’s vibe. Also, it has very new feeling! I love guitar riffs and super shredding guitar solo! Good tiger seems to be little different from member’s past works. Do you agree that?
【DERYA】: I think so. We all have a huge varied influence of music and this album shows where we all currently are as musicians. The album is quite varied, but there is definitely a high energy we have tried to capture through out all the songs. I would say Snake Oil is one of the heavier tracks, but expect to hear that high energy throughout .
Q4: デビュー曲 “SNAKE OIL” を聴きました。クールな楽曲ですね！CONVERGE, THE MARS VOLTA, MASTODON といったバンドのヴァイブを感じました。同時に新しい感覚もありますね。メンバーが所属してきたバンドたちの音楽とは少し違っていますね？
【DERYA】: うん、そう思うよ。僕たちは幅広い音楽から影響を受けているし、このアルバムは現在のミュージシャンとしての僕たちを現しているんだ。デビュー作はとてもバラエティーに富んだものになる。だけど全ての曲がハイエナジーになるようトライしたよ。”SNAKE OIL” はアルバムで最もへヴィーな楽曲だと言えるけど、アルバムを通してエナジーに満ちているから期待して欲しいな。
Q5: I love “Snake Oil”‘s MV. It’s kind of a homage of Old school Nintendo Games. Do you love Megaman?? Haha!
【DERYA】: I think love is a strong word…..but yes. I also hate Megaman. Those original three games were the bane of my childhood. So difficult, so fun and so rewarding. Even going back as an adult and trying to play them, they are just as difficult as they once were .
Q5: “SNAKE OIL” は MV も最高ですね！昔のゲームのオマージュだと思いますが、ロックマンを思い出しましたよ(笑)
【DERYA】: うん、僕はロックマンが大好きだし、大嫌いでもあるんだ。オリジナルの３作は子供の僕にとって悩みの種だったね。難しくて面白くてやりがいがあったんだ。大人になってからやってみても、やっぱり同じくらい難しかったね。
Q6: Anyway, Good Tiger is doing IndieGoGo champagne. And debut album set to release November. As far as possible, could you tell us about upcoming album? Title, music, guest player, and more!
【DERYA】: I can’t give too much away just yet. I will say that there are no guest performances on the album, we wanted this album to be about us, and finding our feet as a new band, so we needed to focus on that. We will be announcing track listing, album title and such over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out on our social media pages! .
Q6: GOOD TIGER のデビュー作は INDIEGOGO キャンペーンを行っています。11月にリリース予定とのことですがタイトルやゲスト、内容について話せるだけで構わないのでお願いします。
【DERYA】: 今の時点で多くは語れないんだ。ゲストプレイヤーはいないよ。自立した新しいバンドとして、自分たちだけのアルバムにしたかったからね。だから集中してやる必要があったよ。トラックリストやタイトルは何週間かしたら発表するから、僕たちのSNSに注目していて欲しいね。
Q7: What is Good Tiger ‘s goal?
【DERYA】: We want to tour the world, and keep making music that excites us and hopefully connects us with our fans, and fans to be. We are having a lot of fun at the moment with everything, and just want to keep that going. It’s very early days for us, but we have been overwhelmed by the reaction so far. .
Q7: GOOD TIGER の目標は何ですか？
【DERYA】: 世界中をツアーして、自分たちがエキサイトする音楽を作り続けて、出来るならファンとこれからファンになるであろう人たちと繋がりたいね。今のところ全てに関してとても楽しめているから、ただそれを続けていきたいね。まだ始まったばかりだけど、今までもらった反響には圧倒されているんだよ。
