CANADIAN NEW COMMER, THE AFTERIMAGE HAS JUST RELEASED FULL OF MELODIC PASSAGE & DYNAMICS NEW EP “LUMIERE” !!
カナダのモダンメタルニューカマー、THE AFTERIMAGE が素晴らしい新作EP “LUMIERE” をリリースしました。”SEEKING” “UNSEEN” “ONYX” の3曲は以前シングルとしてリリースされていたものをリレコーティングし収録という少し変則的なEPですが内容は非常に充実しています。
新作で THE AFTERIMAGE が提示した方向性はテクニカルでヘヴィー、DJENTY な感覚と DANCE GAVIN DANCE, THE FALL OF TROY を想起させる ポストハードコア的な感覚を見事にミックスしたまさに “UNSEEN” なものでした。POLYPHIA, ERRA, INVENT. ANIMATE とツアーを行ったばかりですが、四者四様ながらも全バンドがメタルの先端に立っており確実にそれぞれがシーンの未来を切り開いて行くでしょう。
特に新曲 “DISTANCE” を聴いていただければ彼らの進化が伝わると思います。ハイレンジでキャッチーな”エモい”ボーカル、ピロピロと派手でメロディックなリードは DANCE GAVIN DANCE 直系ですが、楽曲の中盤でブレイクダウンからボーカルが切り込む場面やアトモスフェリックなパートを加えて DJENTY な感覚を見事に融合していますね。”SEEKING” で見せるテクニカルでカオティックな攻撃性と美しいメロディーの対比からは PROTEST THE HERO の影響も垣間見ることが出来ます。”UNSEEN” のイントロで使用しているクリーンギターは CHON のような雰囲気もありますね。アルバム最後を飾る “REACH” のギターを重ねたマスいアプローチも興味深く感じました。

Q1: How is the tour with POLYPHIA, ERRA and INVENT. ANIMATE?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: Tour has been incredible. We have made a lot of friends so far and we are loving the U.S.
Q1: POLYPHIA, ERRA, INVENT. ANIMATE とのツアーはいかがでしたか？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: 信じられないくらい素晴らしいよ。多くの友人が出来たし、アメリカが大好きだからね。
Q2: This is our first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band? How did The Afterimage start? And you sometimes use Chinese Characters as Logo, why did you name your band as The Afterimage?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: The band was started by our vocalist Kyle Anderson in a town outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada called Barrie. We started the band to express ourselves and to showcase a lot of technical proficiency. We quickly realized that we enjoyed the melodic passages a lot more and decided to use the heaviness as a dynamic instead of something that defined our music.
The band was named after a piece of art our vocalist liked from a website called depthcore. A lot of people think we got the name from Dragon Ball though, haha！
Q2: 初インタビューです。まずはバンドについて聞かせて下さい。バンド結成の経緯、名前の由来を教えていただけますか？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: バンドはボーカルの KYLE ANDERSON がカナダはオンタリオ州トロントの外れにある BARRIE という街で始めたんだ。バンドを始めたのは自己表現とテクニック、実力を試すためだよ。僕たちはメロディックなパッセージに溢れていてダイナミックなヘヴィネスを使用するような音楽が楽しめるし、それこそが僕らなんだ。バンド名は KYLE が気に入っている “DEPTHCORE” というウェブサイトのアートからとったんだ。みんなはドラゴンボールからとったと思っているけどね（笑）(※残像拳のこと)
Q3: So, your newest EP “Lumiere” is just out now!! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions so far?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: We did not know what to expect with the release of Lumiere, but the response has been incredibly positive!
Q3: さて、新EP “LUMIERE” がリリースされましたね。今はどういったお気持ちですか？ またこれまでの反響はいかがですか？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: “LUMIERE” に何を期待すれば良いのか分からなかったんだけど、反響は信じられないくらい素晴らしいね！
Q4: Anyway, I really love “Lumiere”, and believe it must be one of the masterpiece of modern prog metal. I think “Lumiere” means ‘Light’ in French. When you named this great EP as “Lumiere”, ? Could you tell us the concept or lyrical themes of the album?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: Lumiere was actually a pre-production song that Dallas our bassist made and Kyle sung on. Three of the songs “Seeking” “Unseen” & “Reach” all coincide with the theme of constantly seeking knowledge beyond what you currently comprehend. To seek a positive outlook and to apply that to everyday living.
Q4: “LUMIERE” はフランス語で”Light”を意味しますね。どういった理由でこのタイトルに決めたのでしょう？アルバムにコンセプトはありますか？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: 実は “LUMIERE” はベーシストの DALLAS が作って KYLE が歌入れをしていたプリプロダクションの楽曲だったんだ。”SEEKING” “UNSEEN” REACH” は図らずも同じテーマを有しているね。知識を追い求め理解することについてさ。ポジティブな見解を得て視野を広げ、社会の役に立てることは大事だよね。
Q5: On “Lumiere”, you re-recorded, “Unseen”, “Seeking”, and “Onyx”. “Seeking” and “Unseen” dropped the “The” out of both title. Also you cleaned up the production and made them minor change. What made you re-recorded？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: We made some small adjustments to those songs because we wanted them to be released on an actual record. This was to insure they could be listened to in a way that they connect conceptually.
Q5: “LUMIERE” では “UNSEEN” SEEKING” “ONYX” がリレコーティングされています。”SEEKING” “UNSEEN” の2曲はタイトルから THE が無くなっていますね。プロダクションもクリーンアップされマイナーチェンジが施されました。
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: うん、いくつかちょっとした調整を施したよ。これらの楽曲をレコードという形で残したかったからなんだ。それにその3曲はコンセプト的にも繋がっているから、こういった形で聴かれるべきだと確信しているよ。
Q6: Compared to “Formless”, I think “Lumiere” becomes heavier, more technical, djenty. Also it has post-hardcore feeling like Dance Gavin Dance or The Fall of Troy. Do you agree that “Lumiere” has these two aspects, Djent and Post-Hardcore?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: I would definitely not consider us to be associated with Djent in anyway, if people even consider that a genre. We are Rock band that has many influences from progressive metal, hardcore, rock, indie, rnb and many other types of music. However, we do like Dance Gavin Dance and The Fall of Troy. The groove is something that we would apply to our music if anything.
Q6: 前作 “Formless” に比べると “LUMIERE” はよりヘヴィーでテクニカル、DJENTY になっていると感じました。同時に、DANCE GAVIN DANCE, THE FALL OF TROY といったポストハードコア的な感覚も存在します。
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: 僕たち自分たちを DJENT と関連付けて考えたことは全くないよ。もしその”Dワード”をみんながジャンルと考えるならね。僕たちはプログメタル、ハードコア、ロック、インディーズ、R&B、他にも様々な音楽から影響を受けたロックバンドなんだよ。ただ、DANCE GAVIN DANCE と THE FALL OF TROY は好きだよ。彼らの持つグルーヴは自分たちの音楽にもぜひ取り入れたいね。
Q7: You use heavy-growl, Jazzy chords, odd time signiture, and complicated progression, so to say Chaotic. But also, beautiful clean voice uses very high range. I think that’s comparison is one of the identity of The Afterimage. So, probably, you are sometimes compared with Protest the Hero. Off course, You and PtH are from Canada. What is PtH to you? And why do you think Canada has been produced such a great bands?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: Protest the Hero is an incredible band that we all look up to for sure. All of us grew up listening to the album Kezia when we were young and in high school. Nothing to say but amazing things about that band.
Q7: カオティックと言えるほどの複雑な激しさと、美しいクリーンボーカルの対比はあなた達の強力な魅力の1つだと思います。同じくカナダ出身の PROTEST THE HERO と比べられることも多いのではないですか？
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: PROTEST THE HERO は驚異的なバンドで、勿論全員がリスペクトしているよ。みんな高校の頃までは彼らの “KEZIA” を聴いて育ったんだ。あのバンドには賞賛の言葉しか出てこないね。
Q8: So, we are waiting for your full album. When it will be?
【THE AFTERIMAGE】: We have a bunch of material written for the new album and we are hoping we can get this recorded early 2016.

【THE AFTERIMAGE】: 新作のために沢山のマテリアルを書いているよ。2016年の早い段階でリリース出来ればいいね。
