New Commer from UK! POP PUNK/EMO meets THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN?! PRESS TO MECO has just launched their debut album “Good Intent” !!

UK 出身の新鋭 PRESS TO MECO は実に面白いバンドです。90~00年代に絶頂期を迎えた SUM41, WEEZER などを彷彿とさせるPOP PUNK や EMO 由来のメロディーは徹頭徹尾カラフルでキャッチー。スリーピースにしてトリプルボーカルが紡ぎ出すハーモニーは QUEEN にも例えられるほど。しかしそのインストゥルメンタルパートは時にプログレッシブでカオティック。典型的なポストハードコアやポップパンクとは明らかに距離を置いた強烈なオリジナリティは、彼らのデビュー作 “Good Intent” で十二分に表現されています。
例えば “Diffusion of Responsibility” “Afinity” のイントロには SikTh や THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN といったマスコア由来のインテリジェンスとアグレッションが織り込まれていますし、”Manipulate” のライトハンドを使用したリフなどは実にチャレンジングです。同時に、アルバムのラストを飾る美しく荘厳な “Sacret Grounds” におけるポリフォニックなボーカルにはバンドの可能性を強く感じました。
2年連続 Download Fest に呼ばれたその実力は本物。CHON＋1D、SikTh＋WEEZER。キュートなルックスで、アンダーグラウンドとメインストリームの邂逅を具現化しようとしている彼らにはぜひ成功して欲しいと思います。今回弊誌ではギター/ボーカルの Luke Caley に話が聞けました。どうぞ！！

【INTERVIEW WITH LUKE CALEY】

Q1: This is our first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band? How did PtM come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name Press to Meco?

【Luke】: Hello :)! We are a band called Press to MECO from Crawley & Croydon. Lewis and myself were already good friends from going to collage together and when the band i was in at the time needed a new drummer he was one of the first people i thought of and knew had a lot of potential. That band eventually fizzled out but Lewis and i wanted to continue with the songs we had, so we needed a bass player. I’d known Adam for a long time through the local (Crawley) music scene, I’d always thought he was really good so i wanted to get him involved. 5 years later here we are! Press to MECO is a NASA term used by astronauts during a shuttle launch. MECO is an acronym for MAIN ENGINE CUT OFF. It’s called from the shuttle once it’s reach enough momentum to get to orbit without further use of the main engines. I like it’s because it’s kind of the point of no return and the everything went ok signal.

Q1: 初インタビューです。まずはバンドについて聞かせてください。PRESS TO MECO 結成の経緯と、バンド名の由来を教えていただけますか？

【Luke】: やあ！僕たちは Crawly と Croydon 出身のバンド PRESS TO MECO だよ。Lewis と僕は同じ大学に通っていたからもともと仲が良かったんだけど、僕が当時所属していたバンドにドラマーが必要になったんだ。Lewis は高いポテンシャルを持っているのを知っていたから、僕のファーストチョイスだったんだよ。期せずしてそのバンドは終わってしまったんだけど、Lewis と僕は残された楽曲を使って活動を続けて行きたかったんだ。それでベースプレイヤーが必要になったんだけど、僕は Crawly のシーンを通じて Adam を長い間知っていて、常々良いプレイヤーだと思っていたから、彼に参加して欲しかったんだよ。そして5年後、僕たちはここにいるよ！PRESS TO MECO とは NASA の用語で、宇宙飛行士がシャトルの打ち上げで使うんだ。MECO とは Main Engine Cut Off の略なんだよ。シャトルが軌道に達してメインエンジン無しで大丈夫になった時に使われる言葉なんだね。もう引き返せないけど全て大丈夫という意味で好きな言葉なんだ。

Q2: Your debut album “Good Intent” is just out now! How are you feeling now? And how are the reactions so far?

【Luke】: Yes! It feels so awesome! We couldn’t have asked for better reactions really, we’d been sitting on some of the songs for so long we’d gone from loving them to hating, worrying if they were good enough to feeling confident with them again. So to finally have them out and people giving such positive feedback is the most amazing and humbling feeling. We’re very happy!

Q2: 新作 “Good Intent” がリリースされましたね。現在のお気持ちを聞かせてください。またこれまでの反響はいかがですか？

【Luke】: うん！最高の気分だよ！良いリアクションは本当に期待していなかったんだ。長い間やっているせいで好きじゃ無くなった曲もあったから、もう一度自信を持てるか不安だったんだね。リリースされてみると、こんなにポジティブな反響をもらえた。信じられないし、謙虚な気持ちになるね。幸せだよ！

Q3:When you named this great album as “Good Intent”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of the album?

【Luke】: Lewis is very much the lyricist of the band. He likes to focus on general life experiences. I really like his writing style, it’s always touching on subjects everyone can relate to in their own way, kinda stuff we’ve all been through. The idea for the album name comes from the ‘Good Intent’ the majority of us start out with, to be the best person we possibly can, but perhaps getting a little lost along the way and compromising your morals due to circumstances out of your control, whatever they may be.

Q3: タイトルを “Good Intent” とした理由はなんですか？アルバムにコンセプトはありますか？

【Luke】: Lewis はバンドにおいて重要な作詞家なんだ。彼は日常生活について着目するのが好きなんだよ。僕は彼のスタイルが本当に好きなんだ。彼はいつも僕たちが共感出来るような題材を選ぶからね。アルバムタイトルの “Good Intent” のアイデアは、僕たちの大半が最初は出来るだけ最高の人間であろうとするね。だけど、それが何であれ、自分がコントロール出来る範囲外の要因のせいで、徐々にそういった気持ちを失い妥協してしまうことについてなんだ。

Q4: “Good Intent” has awesome catchy melody that influenced by Emo or Pop Punk. But also, sometimes you have progressive aspect in your songs. Do you think that kind of contrast is identity of Press to Meco?

【Luke】: Erm I’d say it’s definitely a defining feature but there’s also a lot of other bands mashing genres together in a similar (often better haha) way haha. For me the main thing that’s slightly different about us is the 3 lead vocals and the way we use those vocals. It’s almost like a boy band haha. We all love POP / Chart music as much as we love Metal, so fusing the two together it really fun.

Q4: “Good Intent” ではポップパンクやエモに影響を受けたキャッチーなメロディーを堪能することが出来ますね。同時にプログレッシブやカオティックな要素も存在し、そのコントラストが PRESS TO MECO の特徴になっていると感じました。

【Luke】: うーん、そうだな、確かにそれは僕たちの特徴を確実に捉えているね。だけど、他の多くのバンドたちも同じようにジャンルをマッシュアップしているじゃない？時には僕たちより上手くね（笑）僕にとって PRESS TO MECO 最大の特徴は3リードボーカルとその使用法なんだ。ほとんどボーイバンドみたいだよね（笑）僕たちはメタルを愛するのと同じくらい POP/チャートミュージックも好きなんだ。だからそのふたつを合わせた訳さ。本当に楽しいよ。

Q5: Your instrumental part sometimes reminds me The Dillinger Escape Plan or SikTh. Is that kind of Chaotic/Tech core one of your roots?

【Luke】: That’s awesome! And yes, Dillinger escape plan are probably our (collective) favourite heavy band. SikTh & Dan Weller’s writing/guitar playing were always a huge influence on my growing up, so it’s really cool you can hear that coming through. We all listen to every kind of music and love the heavy stuff as much as the light. Some of our favourite bands are: Everything Everything, Ghost, Cinematic Orchestra, Manchester Orchestra, ABBA, The Dillinger escape plan e.c.t haha

Q5: PRESS TO MECO のインストパートは時に THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN や SikTh といったカオティックなバンドを想起させますね？

【Luke】: それは最高だね！うん、THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN はおそらく僕たち全員のフェイバリットヘヴィーバンドなんだ。SikTh と Dan Weller の作曲とギタープレイには若い頃大きな影響を受けていたね。だから君がそれを感じてくれたのは本当にクールだよ。僕たちはどんなジャンルも聴くんだ。ヘヴィーなものもライトな音楽と同じくらい好きなんだよ。EVERYTHING EVERYTHING, GHOST, CHINEMATIC ORCHESTRA, MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA, ABBA, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN といったところがフェイバリットだね。

Q6: You played at Download fest 2014. How was that? And what’s your plan or dream of the future?

【Luke】: That was amazing! I think we were one of the smallest most unknown bands to ever play on that stage. We’d played the year before but that was on the smallest stage so to get invited back and jumped up to a huge open air stage was crazy. It felt so cool when we were playing, like you could feel we were making so much noise and there was so much space to jump around.

Q6: 昨年は Download でプレイしましたね？大舞台はどうでしたか？

【Luke】: Download は素晴らしかったよ！僕たちはあそこでプレイした中で最も知られていないバンドだったと思うんだ。一昨年もプレイしたんだけど、1番小さなステージだったから、また呼ばれて大きいオープンエアステージに出られたなんて信じられないよ。プレイしている間、あれだけの声援を受けて、みんながジャンプしていたんだ。クールだったよ。
