Melodic Death Metal Giant from Finland, KALMAH set to come to Japan first time ever !!
Pekka と Antti の Kokko 兄弟率いる、メロディックデスメタル最後のまだ見ぬ巨人 KALMAH が Evoken de Valhall Production の招聘で遂に来日を果たします！！
IN FLAMES, DARK TRANQUILLITY, CHILDREN OF BODOM といったオリジネーターたちが、賛否は置いても、その音楽性を大なり小なり変化させて現代を生きているのに対して、KALMAH は不変です。キラキラしたキーボードにキレのあるツインギターリフを乗せ、叙情的なメロディーでリスナーを悶絶させるメロデスの黄金律を頑ななまでに守り続けているのです。勿論そこに、フィンランドのバンドらしいフォークやクラシカルな要素をふんだんに盛り込むのが KALMAH 流。特に、初期の COB ファンなどは KALMAH に宗旨替えをしている方も多いかも知れませんね。
あまりライブを行わないバンドです。ユーロ圏以外では数える程しか行っていないので、今回の来日は非常に貴重だと思います。
今回弊誌ではボーカル/ギターの Pekka Kokko とドラムスを担当する Janne Kusmin の2人に話を聞くことが出来ました。どうぞ！！
【INTERVIEW WITH PEKKA KOKKO & JANNE KUSMIN】
Q1: Long awaited Japan tour is just announced!! How are you feeling now?
【JANNE】: I’m very exited. I always wanted to visit Japan.
Q1: 待望の日本ツアーがアナウンスされましたね！今のお気持ちはいかがですか？
【JANNE】: とても興奮しているよ。僕はずっと日本を訪れたかったんだからね。
Q2: Kalmah isn’t the band that do very many shows. I think you’ve played only Europe without Canada. What’s the reason of that? And what made you decide to come to Japan this time?
【JANNE】: We have played shows in Europe, Canada and Russia. The reason that we haven’t done many gigs is that we all have day jobs and Antti has too much work and he don’t get holidays easily but hopefully we can do more gigs in the future.
Q2: KALMAH はあまりライブを多く行うバンドではありませんよね？ヨーロッパ以外だとおそらくカナダだけでしかプレイしたことがないと思います。なぜ今回の来日を決めたのでしょう？
【JANNE】: うん、僕達はヨーロッパとカナダ、後はロシアでプレイして来たね。あまりライブを行って来なかったのは、全員が昼間の仕事を持っているからだよ。特に Antti は忙しくて簡単に休みが取れないんだよ。でも将来的にはもっとライブをやりたいね。
Q3: How is the set list going to be? Will it be the best hits live or lot’s of songs are from your newest album “Seventh Swamphony” ?
【JANNE】: There will be songs from every album.
Q3: セットリストはどのようになりそうですか？
【JANNE】: そうだね、全てのアルバムからやると思うよ。
Q4: “Seventh Swamphony” was released on 2013. So, three years have passed. We can’t wait for your next release. Could you talk about your next album as far as you can?
【PEKKA】: We are writing some new material at the moment. We are in no hurry so that the next album will be as good as possible and we all are happy with the sounds etc. All that I can promise is that it´s going to happen in the near future…
Q4: 最新作”Seventh Swamphony”は2013年のリリースでしたから、3年が経とうとしています。新作が待ちきれませんね。
【PEKKA】: 現在も、いくつか新しいマテリアルを書いているんだ。次のアルバムは出来るだけ良いものにしたいから、急いではいないんだよ。全員がサウンドや他のことにも満足出来たら良いね。近い将来、リリースされることだけは約束出来るよ。
Q5: “Seventh Swamphony” was produced by Jens Bogren. He is the most popular producer in the Metal scene now. Do you want to work with him on the next album? What did Jens bring to the album?
【JANNE】: Bogren only Mixed the album.
【PEKKA】: Personally I wasn´t happy with his work so I would not let him to do anything with our next album. I think the production is in our own hands now.
Q5: “Seventh Swamphony” は Jens Bogren のプロデュースでしたね。彼はメタルシーンで今、最も人気のあるプロデューサーですが、次作でも起用する可能性はありますか？
【JANNE】: Jens はアルバムのミックスを手がけただけだよ。
【PEKKA】: 個人的には、彼の仕事には満足していないから、次のアルバムに関わらせたくはないと思っているんだ。現在は、プロダクションは僕たちの手に戻ると考えているよ。
Q6: So, what’s the “Swamp”? You call yourself as “Swamp” Metal. And “Swamp” is everywhere in your works, themes, artworks, music videos. haha.
【PEKKA】: There are lots of swamp areas in this area that we´re living and they are being destroyed at breakneck speed. So this our way to get some attention to the fact that man have used those valuable resources enough and contrarily the rest should be protected as well as discarded areas should be reconstructed.
Q6: では、”Swamp”(沼)とは何でしょう？KALMAH は Swamp Metal と自称しています。作品やアートワーク、テーマ、音楽、MVなどあらゆる場所に “Swamp” は現れますね？
【PEKKA】: 僕たちの住む世界には沢山の沼地が存在するよね。それらは恐ろしいほどの速さで壊されているんだ。だから、Swamp を多用するのは僕たちなりの注意喚起なんだよ。破壊された場所を再生させるのと同時に、残った場所を守らなければならないからね。
Q7: Since Ancestor era, Pekka and Antti, Kokko bro’s has continued to play together about 20 years! How is your writing process and relationship?
【PEKKA】: Well, Antti is a bastard whom I have to deal with every day.haha. For real, we are dealing with each other almost daily both in musical matters as well as in other issues. Those other are invariably hunting matters. Sometimes we write songs in our own and sometimes they compose when we´re playing togehter. Nevertheless we arrange them together.
Q7: 前身バンド ANCESTOR 時代を含めると、Pekka と Antti の Kokko 兄弟 は20年もの長い間共にプレイしていますね。お2人はどのような関係なのでしょう？
【PEKKA】: そうだね、Antti はクソ野郎で毎日大変なんだよ(笑)。いや、実際、僕たちはお互い毎日のように顔を突き合わせているんだよ。音楽や他にも相談しなければならないことがあるからね。まあ音楽以外だといつも狩りについてなんだけど。1人で作曲する時もあれば、ジャムっている時に共作することもあるね。しばしばアレンジを一緒に行うこともあるよ。
Q8: Lot’s of Melodic Death Metal originators, like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, have changed their styles drastically. But, Kalmah keep staying Melodic Death Metal field,and making high quality albums constantly.What do you think about their way and music now?
【JANNE】: All of those are good bands and I check their new albums always.
