One Of The US Top Guitarist, Legendary Mark Tremonti Has Just Released His Modern And Flesh New Album “Dust” !!

CREED, ALTER BRIDGE の大成功で、文字通り US ギタリストの頂点に君臨する Mark Tremonti が自身の名前を冠したバンド TREMONTI で最新作 “Dust” をリリースしました！！
グランジムーブメントが下火になりかかっていた90年代中盤から終盤にかけて現れた “ポスト・グランジ” バンドたちは、静と動のダイナミズム、うねるようなグルーヴといった点で、明らかにグランジムーブメントから強く影響を受けながらも、よりラジオフレンドリーなメロディー、楽曲とプロダクションで瞬く間に US ロックシーンの主役となりました。NICKELBACK, PUDDLE OF MUDD といったバンドと並んで CREED は勿論その1つ。グラミー賞も獲得し、全世界で4000万枚以上を売り上げたバンドを牽引していたのが不世出のギタリスト、Mark Tremonti でした。
ただ、彼の魅力は、CREED が一旦解散した後 (2009年に再結成を遂げた後、現在は休眠中) Mark が CREED の楽器隊とあの Slash も目をつけた Myles Kennedy という本格派ボーカリストを得て結成した ALTER BRIDGE、そしてよりソロプロジェクトに近いこの TREMONTI で一層伝わるのかも知れませんね。
Myles のブルージーな歌唱を活かし、LED ZEPPELIN を現代に蘇らせたかのような ALTER BRIDGE のロックサイド、自らがボーカルを務めよりメタルに特化した TREMONTI。どちらのバンドでも、Mark のトレードマークである独特のアルペジオ、キックドラムとシンクロするアグレッシブな低音リフ、何よりアイデア豊富で強烈なエモーションを発するリードプレイを存分に楽しむことが出来ますね。
TREMONTI の最新作 “Dust” は、前作 “Cauterize” の続編で、2枚はレコーディングも同時に行われた実質2枚組の大作です。アルバムオープナー “My Last Mistake” から “The Cage” への流れは TREMONTI を象徴しています。変拍子をも織り交ぜたヘヴィーなリフは実に複雑で、リズムセクションとのシンクロが実に見事。究極にキャッチーなコーラスパートは NWOAHM の流れを組んでいるようにも感じます。”The Cage” のカントリーミュージックで主に使用される、チキンピッキングを組み込んだリードプレイはただただ圧倒的で、彼が長年トップに立っている理由が伝わりますね。
加えて、リフの嵐、畳み掛けるような “Catching The Fire” のオリエンタルなミドルセクションなどは、プログレッシブとも言えるほどで、アルバムをフレッシュなモダンメタル作品へと昇華させています。
一方、タイトルトラック “Dust” は彼が CREED で培ったものが見事に結実していると感じました。具体的には、 “One Last Breath” で聴くことの出来る、ユニークなコードワーク、アルペジオ、そして情熱的なメロディー。Mark の歌唱、リードプレイは共に究極なまでにエモーショナルで、それは逆に、つまり彼が CREED を眠らせている意味がこの楽曲に存在するような気さえしますね。
そして、Mark は現在 ALTER BRIDGE でも新作を制作中。”Dust” から伝わる、今こそが絶頂期だと確信してしまうほど充実している Mark の状態を考えれば、素晴らしい作品になることは間違いないでしょう！

【INTERVIEW WITH MARK TREMONTI】
Q1: Your newest album “Dust” is just out now!! “Dust” is later part of double album “Cauterize / Dust”, isn’t it? Why did you separate them into two records?
【MARK】: I separated them because I didn’t want any songs to get overlooked. If there are too many songs on an album it just gets confusing and undigest-able so I wanted to make sure they all got their fair shake.
Q1: 最新作 “Dust” がリリースされましたね！！作品はダブルアルバム “Cauterize / Dust” の後半だそうですが、なぜ2枚組を別々にリリースされたのですか？
【MARK】: 2枚に分けたのは、見過ごされる曲が出てくるのを避けたかったからなんだ。アルバムに楽曲が多すぎると、困惑するし、消化出来ないよね。僕は全ての楽曲が公平に扱われるようにしたかったんだよ。
Q2: So, could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of “Cauterize / Dust”?
【MARK】: There are no lyrical themes, the only themes that tie them together are the titles Cauterize and Dust. The subject matter and the art ties from one to the next. The first one, Cauterize is about this sci-fi fantasy creature coming to earth and burning away all of the impurities and Dust is the aftermath of that.
Q2: なるほど。では、その2枚のアルバム “Cauterize / Dust” のコンセプトや歌詞のテーマを教えていただけますか？
【MARK】: 歌詞のテーマは特に存在しないんだ。楽曲を結びつけているのは “Cauterize / Dust” というタイトルだけさ。内容やアートは1枚目から2枚目へと繋がっているんだよ。
“Cauterize” は SF ファンタジーで、クリーチャーが地球にやって来て、全ての不純物を焼き払ってしまう話。”Dust” はそれが起こったあとの状態だよ。
Q3: Occasionally, you sing in Alter Bridge, but you are full-time lead singer in Tremonti. And your vocal performance is incredible in this new record! Do you feel more confident as a front man, as a lead singer? And who do you respect as a singer?
【MARK】: I feel more confident when I am out there actually doing it. It’s been a good five months now so I need to go grab that confidence back when I get out there. There aren’t necessarily any rock singers that I go and try to emulate, I just have always done my own thing, my favorite bands, I sing nothing like. I grew up listening to heavy metal and 70’s soft rock, so i guess i sing more like those 70s soft rock guys and try to mix it up with the metal attitude!!!
Q3: あなたは ALTER BRIDGE でもボーカルを取ることがありますが、TREMONTI では常にリードシンガーですよね。”Dust” での歌唱は、フロントマンとしての自信が現れた素晴らしいものですね！特に影響を受けたボーカリストはいますか？
【MARK】: うん、”Cauterize / Dust” を作っている時はより自信に溢れていたね。今は ALTER BRIDGE で良い5ヶ月を過ごしていたから、TREMONTI のアルバムを作っていた時の、ボーカリストとしての自信を取り戻さなければならないね。
特別、ロックシンガーの誰かを模倣する必要はないんだ。僕はいつも自分らしく、大好きなバンドをやって来たんだよ。何者にも変え難いね。
メタルや70年代のソフトロックを聴いて育ったから、まあおそらくは、70年代のソフトロックシンガーたちにより近いように思うな。それとメタルのアティチュードをミックスしているんだよ！！
Q4: Your guitar playing is definitely still amazing! Especially, I really love the solo of “The Cage”. That chicken-picking, double stop proves your technique become much higher level. Anyway, what’s your favorite solos, and tricks in this album?
【MARK】: I just, I try to make solo different, to tell it’s own story. If i have learned any tricks in between the time period in between the last record and the current record I always try to throw them in as much as possible, and the chicken picking one is a good example. I’m always trying to learn as much as I can, and apply it as well as I can, so some of the more country rock based licks that I try to make sound not so country, try to make it hard rock.
Q4: 勿論、ギタープレイも相変わらず素晴らしいですね！特に “The Cage” のチキンピッキングにダブルストップといった卓越したテクニック、リードプレイは、あなたがさらに高いレベルに到達していることを証明しています。
【MARK】: 僕はただ、ギターソロ1つ1つを異なるものにしたいだけなんだ。独自のストーリーを語らせたいね。
もし、前作から最新作までの間に新しいトリック(技)を習得したとしたら、僕はいつもそれらを出来るだけ多く新しいアルバムに投影しようとしているんだよ。
君が挙げたチキンピッキングはその良い例だね。常に出来るだけ学ぼうと心掛けているし、それをどんどん使用していこうと考えているんだ。だから、そういったカントリーロック由来のリックをカントリーぽいサウンドではなく、ハードロックなサウンドに仕上げようとトライしているんだよ。
Q5: I love your way of synchronizing your low E string with Garrett Whitlock’s kick drum, and that creats cool, crunchy sound. Also, acoustic guitar is very effective in this record. Do you think these two aspects are your big trademark?
【MARK】: That’s what I grew up on. I grew up on the right hand, speed metal downstroke horse gallop kind of thing and that has always been one of my favourite styles of playing guitar so I am glad that I have a rhythm section that can really synch up and make it sound nice and full and tight.
Q5: 低音リフとバスドラを見事にシンクロさせたり、アコースティックギターの効果的な使用も作品の聴き所であり、あなたのトレードマークでもありますね？
【MARK】: それこそが、僕の原点なんだよ。ライトハンド奏法、スピードメタルのダウンストローク、ギャロップするリズムプレイなんかを聴いて育ったし、それこそが僕がギターを弾いていて最も楽しめるスタイルだからね。
だから、そのシンクロを可能にするリズムセクションを得て、タイトなサウンドを生み出せることが嬉しいんだ。
Q6: How was the imput from Wolfgang Van Halen? I think you and him are very close friends. Recently, there are rumors about “Van Hager” or “Sammy Halen” or anything like that. haha. What’s your thought about that?
【MARK】: Wolfie is just as good as you could possibly be at playing bass. You know he is just a super solid player. I bring the ideas to Tremonti then everyone goes off and writes their own parts so the parts you hear Wolfie playing are what he brings to these records. As far as rumors go, rumors are rumors, I have no clue!
Q6: バンドのベーシストで、あなたの友人でもある Wolfgang Van Halen からのインプットはいかがでしたか？最近では彼のバンドである VAN HALEN について、”Van Hager” や “Sammy Halen” についての噂が駆け巡っていますが？
【MARK】: Wolfie はただ、とにかくベースが上手いんだよ。とてつもなくソリッドなプレイヤーなんだよ。
TREMONTI では、僕がアイデアを持っていって、それからメンバー各自が自分のパートを書くという形を取っているんだ。だから、このレコードで聴ける Wolfie のプレイは全て彼のインプットだよ。
その噂に関してだけど、どんなに噂が大きくなっても、噂は噂だし、僕は全く知らないよ！
Q7: Speaking of reunion, Creed is in the long hiatus. 2017 will be 20th anniversary of “My Own prison”. Is there any possibility of one more reunion? And looking back now, what’s “Post-Grunge” movement to you?
【MARK】: Right now I am just so busy promoting Dust and recording the new Alter Bridge record and soon to be touring and promoting that record, that there is no time in the near future that I could possibly do anything with Creed but never say never. I never really liked the “Post-Grunge” term. It’s to me, always demeaning.
Q7: リユニオンと言えば、あなたが最初に成功を収めたバンド CREED は長い眠りについていますね？奇しくも来年は名作 “My Own Prison” の20周年ですし、再び活動を行う可能性はありますか？ また、今振り返ってみて、あの時代の “Post-Grunge” ムーブメントについてはどのように思っていますか？
【MARK】: 今現在は、”Dust” のプロモーションでとても忙しいし、さらに ALTER BRIDGE の新作をレコーディングしているんだ。すぐにそのアルバムのツアーとプロモーションも始まるからね。だから、近々では、CREED に関して何かをやる時間はないんだよ。でも決してないとは言わないよ。
僕は “Post-Grunge” という言葉が本当に嫌いなんだ。僕にとってそれは、侮辱的で CREED の品位を落とすような言葉だよ。
Q8: Anyway, Alter Bridge is making new album. Could you tell us about that as possible as you can? And how do you separate Alter Bridge from Tremonti?
【MARK】: We just finalized recording. 14 tracks. We are very excited about it, it’s a very diverse album and we are very proud of it thus far, and we are getting ready to mix it so we are just very excited. The biggest difference between Alter Bridge and Tremonti is of course the vocalists, and I am a completely different singer than Myles, so that’s one big difference and the rhythm sections as well. Alter Bridge has more of a pocket groove and Tremonti is more of a tight metal pocket. For the most part when it gets to the metal realm, it’s goes towards the Tremonti side of things and I try to make the two bands sound as different as possible.
Q8: ALTER BRIDGE の新作の話が出ましたが、できる限りで話していただけますか？ また、 TREMONTI と ALTER BRIDGE を分けているものは何ですか？
【MARK】: ちょうどレコーディングを終えたところなんだ。全部で14曲収録だよ。作品には全員がとても興奮しているね。とても多様性に富んでいて、誇れるアルバムなんだ。今はミックスに取り掛かるところで、だから最高にエキサイトしているんだよ。
ALTER BRIDGE と TREMONTI の最大の違いは勿論ボーカリストだよ。僕は Myles とは完全に違うタイプのシンガーだからね。
あとは、リズムセクションにも違いがあるね。ALTER BRIDGE はより爽快なグルーヴで、TREMONTI はもっとタイトなメタルなんだよ。楽曲の大半がメタルの領域にあれば、TREMONTI で使用するって訳さ。そうやって2つを出来るだけ分けるようにしているよ。
