北欧エピックドゥームの巨人、CANDLEMASS が Loud Park 2016 で遂に初来日を果たします！！
唯一無二のボーカル Messiah Marcolin を擁し、哀愁漂う北欧の叙情性とドゥームを見事にミックスさせた、彼らの金字塔にしてシーンのマイルストーン、”Nightfall”, “Ancient Dreams”, “Tales of Creation” から、SOLITUDE AETURNUS の実力派 Robert Lowe を起用した近年の強力な正統派路線まで、CANDLEMASS は常にシーンの先頭に立ち、独自の存在感を発揮し続けて来ましたね。
2012年にリリースされた “Psalm For The Dead” は彼らの最後のアルバムとして制作されましたが、後に、バンドのベーシストでソングライター、絶対的リーダーの Leif Edling が ｢歳をとりすぎて、不完全な作品しか作れなくなるまでは止めない｣ と発言し、CANDLEMASS は存続するかのようにも思われました。ところが思わぬ不幸がバンドに降りかかります。
Lowe が脱退するも、Yngwie Malmsteen, THERION などで勇名を馳せ、”King of the Grey Islands” のデモで歌うなどバンドとも長年関わってきた Mats Leven の加入でラインナップはより強化されていた矢先、残念ながら、Leif が2014年に慢性疲労症候群という難病を発病、ライブに帯同出来なくなってしまったのです。バンドは現在、ENTOMBED に所属していた Jorgen Sandstrom や ex-OPETH の Per Wiberg (以前のインタビューで触れた通り、彼はベーシストでもある) をサポートベーシストに起用してライブを行っています。
ライブでプレイ出来ないとは言え、Leif の創作意欲は衰えることを知りません。CANDLEMASS の誕生を高らかに告げたデビュー作、”Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” の30周年を記念する新作 EP “Death Thy Lover” が遂にファンの元へと届けられました。
全4曲、26分の作品は、勿論、ドゥーミーなリフワーク、扇情的なギターソロ、テンポチェンジによる緩急など、CANDLEMASS のクラッシックなトレードマークが存分に詰まっています。しかし、同時に以前の CANDLEMASS とは異なる”キャッチーさ”というフレッシュな要素、そして薄れつつあった “Epicus” の復活を強く感じられる、魅力的なレコードに仕上がりました。
アルバムオープナー、”Death Thy Lover” を聴けば、Lars のリードプレイが現在の CANDLEMASS を牽引していることに気づくでしょう。メタルシーンでも、最も過小評価されている優れたアックスマンは、時にアグレッシブ、時にエモーショナルに楽曲を彩ります。巧みなベンディング、ワウの使用、豊かなフレーズのバリエーションで組み立てられたソロパートは、まるで起承転結のお手本のようですね。
さらに、新加入 Mats Leven の見事な歌唱、そしてポップとさえ言えるキャッチーなボーカルラインは、CANDLEMASS に新しい風を吹き込んでいます。やはりこの人の才能は本物。この楽曲のメロディーラインを聴けば、Yngwie の “Facing The Animal” が誰のおかげで傑作となり得たのか明らかですね。
タイトルトラックがキャッチーさの象徴だとすれば、 “Sinister n’ Sweet” はエピカルなドゥームメタルへの帰還を伝えています。極上のボーカルとアルペジオを軸とした冒頭のメランコリックなクリーンパートと、ドゥーミーなリフワークの対比は、シネマティックとさえ言えるほどで、 CANDLEMASS の新章開幕を告げていますね。
実は最も今までの CANDLEMASS らしいインストゥルメンタル曲 “The Goose” で幕を閉じるまで、この短くも印象深い作品は、リスナーに濃密な “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” を提供し続けるに違いありません。
今回弊誌では、長年 CANDLEMASS を支え続けて来たリードギタリスト Lars Johansson、そして遂に正式メンバーとなった Mats Leven にインタビューを行うことが出来ました！これだけのものを提示されると、どうしても続きが聴きたくなりますね。さて CANDLEMASS に”次”はあるのでしょうか？？どうぞ！！

Q1: Hi, Mat, Lars!! Loud Park 2016 is just announced. Finally, Candlemass will come to Japan! I think Lars’s coming will be for the first time in your long career. And Yngwie era was your last coming, Mats! How are you feeling now?
【LARS】: Hello Sin, Im in great spirit and looking forward to come to Japan so much.
【MATS】: Great! Been waiting a long time to come back again.
Q1: Loud Park 2016 に CANDLEMASS の出演がアナウンスされましたね！遂に CANDLEMASS の初来日が実現します！Lars は初めての、Mats は Yngwie 時代以来の来日だと思います。今のお気持ちを聞かせてください。
【LARS】: 素晴らしい気持ちだね。日本に行くのをとても楽しみにしているんだ。
【MATS】: 最高！本当に長い間、日本に戻ることを待っていたよ。
Q2: Robert Lowe left, and Mats Joined Candlemass on 2012. And Mats, you became official member of the band this year. Off course, you have a long history with the band. Could you tell us about the story behind that?
【MATS】: Well, I’ve known Leif Edling since we did Abstrakt Algebra in 1995 and then we did 3 Krux albums between 2003-2012.
During the Krux years I also helped Leif recording demos for Candlemass.
【LARS】: Well to make a long story short, Robert did well on record, but had a hard time remembering lyrics live, and that is not cool. Mats is singing well on both records and live and is a good frontman.
So the choise was easy since he´s been a long time friend to the band and so…
Q2: 前任ボーカリスト Robert Lowe がバンドを離れ、2012年から Mats が加入しました。今年、Mats は正式にメンバーとなったそうですが、どういった状況だったのでしょう？
【MATS】: 僕は Leif Edling を随分前から知っていたんだよ。1995年に ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA を一緒にやったからね。それから、2003年から2012年の間に KRUX でも共に3枚のアルバムを作ったね。KRUX をやっている時に、僕は CANDLEMASS のデモのレコーディングも手伝っていたんだよ。
【LARS】: 長くなるから掻い摘んで話すと、Robert はレコードでは良かったんだ。だけど、ライブになると歌詞を覚えられなくてね。あまりクールなことではないだろ？
Mats はライブでもレコーディングでも上手く歌えるし、良いフロントマンでもある。バンドの長年の友人でもあったからね。選択は簡単だったよ。だから…( Lowe を解任した )。
Q3: Anyway, “Psalm For The Dead” seemed to be last album of Candlemass. But you’ll release “Death Thy Lover” EP. Do you think it will open the new chapter of Candlemass? Or only for the anniversary of 30th of Candlemass?
【LARS】: Well Leif and the rest of the band felt it would be cool to do something extra, since it´s the 30 years anniversary, and also to put down some cool songs now when Mats is doing such a good job, who knows what happens next.
【MATS】: Who knows? Basically, it’s up to Leif who writes the majority of the songs.
Q3: 前作 “Psalm For The Dead” がバンドの最終作となるように思われていましたが、新作 “Death Thy Lover” EP がリリースされますね！この作品が CANDLEMASS の新しい章の幕開けとなるのでしょうか？それとも30周年のアニバーサリーという意味合いが強いのでしょうか？
【LARS】: そうだね、Leif とバンドのメンバーは、特別な何かをやれたらクールだと感じていたんだ。というのも、バンドの30周年記念だからね。Mats が素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたから、新しいクールな楽曲を生み出せたとも言えるね。次に何が起こるのかは、誰にも分からないさ。
【MATS】: どうだろうね？基本的には楽曲の大半を手がけている Leif 次第なんだよ。
Q4: “Death Thy Lover” is definitely Candlemass record. Everything fans wanted to hear is here. When you named this great EP “Death Thy Lover”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of the EP?
【LARS】: Oh that´s a question that i think only Leif can anserw to, since he does the music and lyrics.
【MATS】: That’s true, I can’t since it’s all Leif’s lyrics!
Q4: “Death Thy Lover” は実に CANDLEMASS らしい素晴らしいレコードですね？アルバムのコンセプトや歌詞のテーマを教えていただけますか？
【LARS】: それは Leif だけが答えられる質問だね。彼が音楽と歌詞を書いているからね。
【MATS】: まさしく。Leif が全ての歌詞を書いているからね！無理だよ。
Q5: How was the writing process? Off course, Leif is the songwriter of Candlemass. Do you add your own part after he made complete songs? Or do you make the songs together to some extent?
【LARS】: Leif writes the songs and when he feels good about it he makes us a demo. After that we reherse to check it all out and then we go to the studio. Some small things always changes a little in the progress of rehersing, and also a little when you start the recording process. And of course i add a lot of my personality in my solos.
【MATS】: No, I just had some arrangement ideas that we used when we rehearsed before the EP.
Q5: 作曲はどのように行われましたか？勿論、Leif がソングライターな訳ですが、他のメンバーはどのように関与しているのですか？
【LARS】: まずは Leif が曲を書いて、彼が良いと感じたら、僕たちにデモを作るんだよ。その後、僕たちはそのデモ全てをチェックしてリハーサルを行い、スタジオに入るんだ。
リハーサルが進むに連れて、常に細かい変更が少しづつ加えられていくよ。レコーディングに入ってからも、細かい変更は加えられるね。そして勿論、僕のギターソロには沢山、僕の個性を盛り込むよ。
【MATS】: 僕はレコーディングの前のリハーサルで、いくつかアレンジメントのアイデアを出しただけだよ。
Q6: Speaking of Leif, unfortunately, he has serious health problem. How will it be the live performance in Japan? And what’s Leif to you?
【LARS】: Leif is a old lifetime friend and an exelent songwriter. The fatique syndrome he´s suffering from is a sad thing indeed. and his doctor has told him to take it cool this year as well. But we all hope that he can be with us live as soon as possible.
Q6: 残念なことに、Leif は深刻な病気と戦っています。ライブに復帰し、日本に来ることは出来そうですか？
【LARS】: Leif は人生の友であり、並外れたソングライターでもあるね。慢性疲労症候群に彼が苦しんでいることは実に悲しいよ。
彼のドクターは今年いっぱいは休養に当てた方が良いと言っているそうだよ。だけど、勿論メンバーはみんな、出来るだけ早く彼がライブに戻って来て欲しいと望んでいるよ。
Q7: Your shredding guitar is one of the important aspect of Candlemass, and that’s very effective in your new EP. Who do you respect as the guitarist? And what do you think about shredding in Doom metal?
【LARS】: So, Lars, When you do a solo you must always consider how the song feels in total, and then express yourself in a way that fits the song. some things you play fast and some things you play slower, but always keep in mind to keep it interesting and with feeling. Some people play so fast through a whole album that you dont remember what they did.
I respect many guitarists of both today and old school guys, as long as they play with feeling and not boring “standard´´ solos if you know what i mean.
Q7: Lars の卓越したリードプレイは CANDLEMASS の重要な要素の1つですし、新作でもとても効果的ですね！
【LARS】: ギターソロを取る時は、楽曲全体が求めるものを常に考慮しなければならないよ。それから、楽曲に沿う形で、君自身を表現していくんだ。時には速く弾いたり、時には緩やかにプレイしたりしてね。常に興味深く、感情豊かであることを心に留めて置かなければならないんだよ。アルバム全体を通して速く弾きすぎて、印象に残らないプレイヤーもいるからね。
オールドスクールでも新鋭でも、尊敬しているギタリストは沢山いるよ。感情があって、退屈な”スタンダード”のソロをプレイしていない限りはね。分かるでしょ？
Q8: Now, Mats, I think Yngwie Malmsteen band and “Facing the Animal” was the one of the highlight of your career. You know, off course, Yngwie and Cozy Powell was in the band. Looking back now, what was the band and “Facing the Animal” to you? And what do you think Yngwie now?
【MATS】: A fantastic experience of course, that was my first world tour as well.
Many people tell me “Facing The Animal” was the last good Yngwie album and I agree.
I haven’t met Yngwie for many years, I wish him all the best.
Q8: Mats, Cozy Powell も居た Yngwie 時代、”Facing The Animal” という作品はあなたのキャリアでもハイライトの1つだと思うのですが、今振り返ってみて、あの作品はあなたにとってどのような意味を持っていますか？
【MATS】: 勿論、素晴らしい経験だったね。あのバンドで僕は最初のワールドツアーを経験したんだよ。多くのファンが “Facing The Animal” こそ Yngwie の最後に作った名作だと言ってくれるんだ。僕も同意するよ。
Yngwie とは長年会っていないんだけど、彼が順調であることを祈っているよ。
Q9: Except for Candlemass and Yngwie, you have been lot’s of band from Melodic Hard Rock like Treat, Power Metal like At Vance, Symphonic Metal like Therion, and Doom like Krux. So, what’s your favorite genre? If you have a chance to making a solo record, what will it be like?
【MATS】: I guess Therion fans could enjoy some of my solo stuff but also anyone who likes my voice. It won’t sound like anything I’ve done before.
I play live with Candlemass and Gus G.Sometimes I do guest vocals, for instance Full Nothing from Argentina.
Q9: Yngwie や CANDLEMASS 以外にも、あなたは多数のバンドに関わって来ましたね。TREAT のようなメロディックハード、AT VANCE のようなパワーメタル、THERION のようなシンフォニックメタル、KRUX のようなドゥームメタル…中でもあなたが最も楽しめる音楽はどういったものなのでしょう？もし、ソロレコードを作るとしたらどうなりますか？
【MATS】: おそらく、THERION のファンは僕のソロを楽しめると思うんだ。まあ、僕の声が好きな人なら誰でも気に入るだろうけど。今までやったことのないような音楽になるだろうね。
今は CANDLEMASS, GUS G のライブで歌っていて、アルゼンチンの FULL NOTHING みたいなバンドのゲストボーカルも務めているよ。
