DISC REVIEW “DNA”
風光明媚な地中海を臨むイタリアの “DNA” は、ことロックの世界においてここ日本の情緒と一脈の共感覚を披露し続けています。
古くは NEW TROLLS, P.F.M. といったプログレッシブの芸域から、近年では RHAPSODY, DARK LUNACY, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE など雄々しきメタルの血脈まで、ファンタジックでロマンと幾ばくかのセンチメントを宿したその感覚世界は殊更に日本のリスナーを魅了して来たのです。
“Derdian” の王 Golstar を巡る英雄譚 “New Era” サーガ、至高のトリロジーでシーンに登壇した DERDIAN もまた、彼らと同様に目眩く幻想と哀愁のユートピアで日本のファンと深くそのイマジネーションを共有しています。
アルバム “Limbo” で日本盤ボーナストラックに、アニメ “聖闘士星矢” のテーマ曲 “Pegasus Fantasy” を華麗にカバーした事実もバンドと日本の密接な脈絡を物語るものでしょう。
「2年以上の月日を経て、DERDIAN と Ivan の間にはケミストリーが存在したことに気がついたんだよ。」マスターマインド Enrico がそう語るように、”Limbo” 以降よりコンテンポラリーなサウンドへとシフトした彼らに不可欠な “声”、Ivan Giannini が復帰を果たし製作された最新作 “DNA” は情緒のシンクロ二ティーはそのままに、集大成にして新たな冒険へと駆り立てるバンド史上最も多様な SF エピックです。
「改竄されていた聖書の内容。現生人類は、来襲したエイリアンが科学で生み出したエイリアンと地球人の子孫であった。」常にストーリー性を前面に押し出す DERDIAN が送る新たなファンタジーは、壮麗なるイントロダクション “Abduction” でシネマティックにその幕を開けます。
アルバムオープナー “DNA” はまさに劇団 “DERDIAN” の面目躍如。高らかに鳴り響くシンフォニー、舞い上がるは雄弁なる大合唱、押し寄せるは津波のようなメタルパワー。
華々しい歌劇の幕開けは ROYAL HUNT にも通ずるメランコリーと構成美、クラシカルの園を見せつけながら、リスナーをカタルシスの渦へと誘います。リレコーディング作品に D.C. Cooper が参加していた事実も偶然ではないはずです。
初期 SYMPHONY X をイメージさせるミステリアス&プログレッシブな “False Flag Operation” を経て遭遇する “Never Born” はアルバムのハイライトでしょう。”DNA” 以上にシンフォニックメタルの理想形を提示した楽曲は、エナジーとフック、キャッチーなスピリットを抱えてダイナミックにその翼を広げます。
大胆なストップモーションに繊細な間奏のオーケストレーションなど、近年のパワーメタルアクトの中でも飛び抜けて “フック” の意味を熟知した作曲術こそが明らかに彼らの強みの1つでしょう。
一方で、強国 “Derdian” は侵攻を続け、その領地を多様に拡大し続けます。耽美なるタンゴの響きを纏ったエスニックな “Red and White”、ジプシージャズのイメージを大胆に投影する “Elohim”、プログメタルの領域へと侵入する複雑怪奇な “Ya Nada Cambiara”。DERDIAN ワールドは無限にカラフルに、そしてエクレクティックにそのパノラマを四望するのです。
そうしてアルバムは日本語で歌われるボーナストラック “Never Born” をアンコールにその幕を閉じます。盛大なカーテンコールを受けながら。
今回弊誌では創立メンバーでギタリスト Enrico Pistolese にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。2年連続となる Evoken Fest への出演も決定しています。「DIYとなった現在は全く異なり、僕たちのことは全て僕たちで決定を下すことが出来る。だいたい、バンド全員が日常の仕事で上司がいるのに、なんでまた厄介な上司を増やす必要があるの？！1人で充分だよ（笑）！！」どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH ENRICO PISTOLESE
Q1: First of all, your appearance on Evoken fest in Japan for two straight years is just announced! How do you feel now? What do you think about co-stars of the fest?
【ENRICO】: To be called the last year was already a dream for us all, but to have the chance to be there once again it’s really great, it’ a consecration of a future inseparable relationship between Japan and Derdian.
To have the chance to watch in eyes the same people that the last year used to scream our hymns and to share the stage with artists like Nocturnal Rites and Orden Ogan it’s fantastic, damn, I was a kid when I used to dream listening the Nocturnal Rites songs!
Q1: 2年連続の Evoken Fest 出演ですね？
【ENRICO】: 昨年の出演でもうすでに僕たちの夢は叶ったようなものなんだけど、もう一度あの場所でプレイする機会を貰えて本当に嬉しいよ。まさに日本と DERDIAN の強固な未来に向けて邁進しているって感じだね。
昨年は僕たちの “聖歌” をファンがスクリームしてくれているのをまざまざと目に焼き付けることが出来たし、今年は NOCTURNAL RITES や ORDEN OGAN とステージをシェア出来るんだ。最高だよね！子供の頃、NOCTURNAL RITES の楽曲を生で聴くのが夢だったんだからね！
Q2: Regarding Japan, you covered “Pegasus Fantasy” on “Limbo”. Off course, it’s a theme song of “Knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya)”. Actually, I was really into the animation when I was a kid, are you too?
【ENRICO】: Ahaha, good question! Knights of the Zodiac was one of my favorite cartoon and I very loved Dragon Ball too! And what about Voltron, Mazinga, Jeeg robot… whole generations in Italy have grown up with those cartons and we loved them too!
Q2: 日本との強固な未来と仰いましたが、バンドはアルバム “Limbo” で日本アニメ “聖闘士星矢” の主題歌 “Pegasus Fantasy” をカバーしていましたよね？ 実際、”聖闘士星矢” のファンだったんでしょうか？
【ENRICO】: あはは、いい質問だね！（笑）”聖闘士星矢” はフェイバリットアニメの1つだよ。それに僕は “ドラゴンボール” の大ファンでもあるんだよ！
あとは、ボルトロン、マジンガーZ、鋼鉄ジーグ…イタリアでは全ての世代でそういったアニメを見て育つんだ。もちろん、僕たちみんなが大好きなんだよ！
Q3: Is there anything else that you are attracted by Japanese culture, music, movies, video games etc?
【ENRICO】: We are attracted by your beautiful people… you are charming, full of honor and respect for everything and everyone. In a world increasingly selfish, this is really a rare quality. and then you are able to live in an ordered way… there is no trash on your streets even in a huge city like Tokyo. You have been able to eliminate the petty crime so If I lose my wallet, somebody runs to reach me to return it…incredible! You are sons of the samurai culture so you are calm, measured, civil. I think that in a “Human reset” the Japanese people should be one of the few to survive!!! ahaha believe me, I really think so!
Q3: アニメ以外にも日本に魅せられている部分はありますか？
【ENRICO】: 僕たちはとにかく日本人の美しさに魅せられているんだよ。実にチャーミングで、全ての物や人物に敬意を忘れないんだ。
世界はどんどん自己中心的になっていく中、日本の感覚、クオリティーは非常にレアだよね。だからこそ、日本人は規律正しく生きることが出来ているんだろうな…だって東京のような大都市にさえ道端にゴミが落ちていないんだからね。
ちょっとした犯罪さえ起こらないしね。もし僕が財布を失くしたとしても、誰かが追いかけて返してくれるんだから…信じられないよね！
きっと君たちは “侍” の子孫だから、穏やかで、成熟していて、文民的なんだろうな。僕は “Human Reset” (学ばない人類のリセットをテーマとしたバンド7枚目のアルバム) が起こっても、日本人はきっと数少ない生き残りになるはずだよ！！！（笑）信じていいよ、僕は本当にそう思っているんだから！
Q4: So, let’s talk about your newest record “DNA”. Ivan Giannini returned to the band. Why did he leave the band for about three years and come back?
【ENRICO】: 3 years ago after a live show in Czech Republic we had a discussion about the future of Derdian. He was so excited because of the good people’s consent so that he wanted to make a deep change in the band planning a busy schedule of concerts all over the world. We said him it would be a dream but the current music market did not allow it. We all have a job in Italy because we need to keep our families. Some of us have sons too, so it would be a risky choice to give up everything to tour all time. He felt like we did not want to bother enough for the band. He felt betrayed and he wanted to interrupt his collaboration with us. Naturally it was only a misunderstanding and after two long years we discovered that between Derdian and Ivan there was an alchemy and it was the time to gather the family once again and we hope…forever. After so many years we are brothers, so there is not a reason to argue.
Q4: では最新作 “DNA” について話しましょう。およそ3年前にバンドを離れたボーカリスト Ivan Giannini が復帰を果たしましたね？
【ENRICO】: 3年前、チェコでのライブを終えた後、僕たちは DERDIAN の未来について話し合ったんだ。Ivan は賞賛を受けて舞い上がっていたんだろうな。バンドの計画を大きく変えて、より忙しく世界中をツアーしたいと言ったんだ。
僕たちは彼に、それは確かに夢だけど現在の音楽マーケットでは叶わないよと告げたんだよ。僕たちは家族を養うために、全員がイタリアで仕事を持っているんだ。メンバーの何人かには息子がいるしね。だから全てを放棄してツアーに全てを注ぐのはリスキーなんだよ。
だけど彼は、僕たちがそこまでバンドに煩わされたくないと思っているように感じたんだろうね。そして彼は裏切られたように感じ、僕たちとのコラボレートを中断したくなってしまったんだ。
基本的には、ただの誤解だったんだ。2年以上の月日を経て、DERDIAN と Ivan の間にはケミストリーが存在したことに気がついたんだよ。そうして “家族” が再び集まる時が来たんだ。
僕たちはこれが永遠に続くことを願っているよ…事実、数年の月日を経て僕たちは兄弟となり、もはや討論する理由もなくなってしまった訳さ。
Q5: Derdian always has it’s own world, fantasic stories. There seem to be laboratory on the artwork. What kind of story do you tell in “DNA”?
【ENRICO】: DNA it is inspired by an alternative vision of the old testament of the Holy Bible. Recently some scholars have discovered that literally translating the bible, it describes a reality very different from that which has been handed down to us by the Catholic Church. the Hebrew word Elohim, which has been translated with God, expresses in reality plurality. And according to this version it seems that 200.000 years ago an alien race named Elohim has come from other planets to colonize the earth and create the recent human race we know by mixing their own DNA with that of the hominids that inhabited the planet at that time. The laboratory you see on the artwork is the Garden of Eden where the DNA experiments have brought to creation of Adam, the first man! Indeed in this version the same scholars found that if you literally translate on the Bible the description of the Garden it’s similar to the description of a laboratory…
We found it was a charming theme to develop a concept regardless of what our personal religious inclinations may be so we tried to keep this version more cinematographic and it has been really exciting! A great experience! Moreover it fitted very well to be the prequel to Human reset, so why not?.
Q5: DERDIAN の作品にはいつも独特の世界観、ファンタジックなストーリーが存在します。アートワークにもあるように、今回は DNA を巡るサイエンスフィクションのようですね？
【ENRICO】: “DNA” 自体は旧約聖書の別バージョンというアイデアにインスパイアされたんだ。
近年、何人かの研究者がその別バージョンの聖書を文字通り訳したところ、カトリック教会によって受け継がれ僕たちに渡されていたものとは非常に異なることが分かったんだよ。
そこでは “神” と訳されたヘブライ語の “エロヒム” は現実には複数形 “Gods” として表現されていたんだ。そしてこのバージョンによると、200,000年前、エロヒムというエイリアンの種族が他の惑星からやって来て、地球を植民地化し、その時地球に住んでいた人類のDNAと自分たちのDNAを混合することによって現在の人類を創造したと記されていたんだよ。
アートワークに描かれた実験室は、DNA の実験で Adam を作ったまさにエデンの園さ。最初の人類だよ！ 実際、このバージョンでは同じ学者が、この聖書のエデンの園を直訳すれば、それは研究所の意味に近いニュアンスだと分かったんだよ…
僕たちは自身の宗教的傾向が何であれ、掘り下げるべき魅力的なテーマだと思ったね。だからこのバージョンをより映画的に保とうと努力したんだよ。実にエキサイティングだったね！それ以上に、”Human Reset” の前日譚としても完璧にフィットするとは思わないかい？
Q6: Regarding fantasy, you are often compared with Rhapsody also from Italy. What’s your perspective about the comparison and you are called “Symphonic metal”?
【ENRICO】: We don’t feel like Rhapsody. We feel to have our own identity and when people compare us with Rhapsody we really don’t understand what they mean. Yes, at beginning Rhapsody were one of our favorite band and there is no doubt we have drawn inspiration from them. but we were very young. Now things are very different. We feel to play completely a different music. About symphonic metal, ok, we can agree but sometimes our music is not even that. in the composition we let ourselves be carried away by the passion of the moment without thinking about clichés or labels.
Q6: ファンタジーと言えば、DERDIAN はしばしば同郷の RHAPSODY と比較されますよね？
【ENRICO】: 僕たちが RHAPSODY に似ているとは思わないよ。僕たちには独自のアイデンティティーが存在すると思うね。だから、誰かに RHAPSODY と比較されても、よくその真意がわからないというのが実際なんだ。
もちろん、当初は RHAPSODY はフェイバリットバンドの1つだったし、彼らからインスピレーションを得たのは疑いようもない事実だよ。だけど当時僕たちはとても若かったからね。
状況は今では全く異なるよ。全く別の音楽をプレイしている感覚なんだ。シンフォニックメタルというジャンルにしても、確かに僕たちはそこに属しているとは思うよ。だけど時に僕たちの音楽はその場所さえ離れるんだ。
ライティングプロセスではただその瞬間の情熱に身を任せるようにしているんだ。クリシェやレッテル、ジャンルについて考えることなくね。
Q7: Speaking of “genre”, I think “Symphonic metal” is just only one aspect of you. “Red and White” is ethnic, “Elohim” is jazzy, and “Ya Nada Cambiara” is progressive. Off course, I know you contracted with Magna Carta once, but Derdian now become really diverse band, right?
【ENRICO】: Yes my friend, after the Magna Carta experience we felt in the modern time there was no need of a label. Internet deeply changed the music business but in the meantime it gave the opportunity to the bands to promote their music independently and with good results. To be an independent band means to decide everything concerning the music, the artwork, the release date, the promotion. A band is really free and without a leader, In fact, we must admit that we have always been rather anarchist about it! ahahah. Often we did not agree with the choices of Magna Carta for example the mastering of New era pt. 3 that wanted to manage it directly. We didn’t like the result but we had to obey, and the same about the sad choice to press it without a booklet! Magna Carta was the leader, so unfortunately we had to shut-up and keep calm! Now is different and we decide everything about us. We are leader of ourselves. Why we should have one more leader? we already have a leader everyone at his own job! One is enough! ahahah.
Q7: 仰る通り、所謂 “シンフォニックメタル” はバンドを構成する要素の1つにしか過ぎませんね。Magna Carta との経験を経て、プログからジャズ、エスニックまで今ではすっかり多様なバンドへと進化を遂げていますね？
【ENRICO】: その通りだよ。Magna Carta との経験、契約を終えて、僕たちは現代においてレーベルの必要性を感じなくなったんだ。インターネットは深く音楽ビジネスを変えたね。ある意味、バンドにDIYでプロモートを行い、良い結果を呼び込むチャンスを与えたとも言えるだろう。
バンドがインディペンデントになるということは、音楽、アートワーク、リリース日、プロモーションなど関わる全てを決定することになるんだ。リーダーがいなくなり、バンドは本当に自由になる訳だよ。事実、僕たちはちょっとアナーキスト、無政府状態になり過ぎる感があるけどね（笑）
僕たちはしばしば Magna Carta のやり方に納得がいかなかったんだ。例えば “New Era pt. 3” のマスタリングは直接手がけたかったんだ。結果には満足していないけど従う他なかったね。それにブックレットもなしでプレスされたのは悲しかったな！だけどリーダーは Magna Carta だったから僕たちは口を噤んで静かにしているしかなかったよ！
DIYとなった現在は全く異なり、僕たちのことは全て僕たちで決定を下すことが出来る。だいたい、バンド全員が日常の仕事で上司がいるのに、なんでまた厄介な上司を増やす必要があるの？！1人で充分だよ（笑）！！
Q8: Japanese version of “Never Born” is amazing present for us! For example, Powerwolf uses three languages like English, Germany, and Latin. Why don’t you use Japanese and Italian more? haha.
【ENRICO】: Ahaha about Italian sometimes we used it in few verses on our old albums. Using often Japanese could be a good idea! Thank you for it!
Q8: 日本語で歌われた “Never Born” のジャパニーズバージョンは素敵な贈り物でした。
例えば POWERWOLF は3つの言語を活用してアルバムを制作していますが、あなたたちも、英語、イタリア語、日本語でやれそうですよね？（笑）
【ENRICO】: わはは（笑）イタリア語は昔のアルバムのヴァースなんかでほんの少し使ったことがあるけどね。確かに日本語を時折導入していくのは良いアイデアかも知れないな！ありがとう！
