NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【DILEMMA : RANDOM ACTS OF LIBERATION】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH COLLIN LEIJENAAR OF DILEMMA !!

“I Believe That Prog Music Should Not Only Be Clever And Virtuoso, But Also Moves Your Emotions And Your Heart. And It Should Surprise You, Taking You On a Musical Journey.”

DISC REVIEW “RANDOM ACTS OF LIBERATION”

FOCUS, EARTH & FIRE, TRACE, KAYAK, AYREON, TEXTURES, VUUR。

DILEMMA “RANDOM ACTS OF LIBERATION” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH COLLIN LEIJENAAR

Q1: Hello, Collin! First of all, could you tell us about your musical background? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up? What inspired you to start playing drums?

【COLLIN】: Music was (and still is) everything to me, it was and is my life. From a very young age me and my friends where always listening listening, trading and discussing music. It was our main focus as teenagers. We would save all our allowance and money we made with little jobs here and there, and bought as much LP’s and CD’s as we could. Or empty cassette tapes, so we could tape the music from each other.
We would spend hours and hours listening to anything that was really musical in our ears. Toto, Rush, Genesis, Kansas, Mr. Mister, Phil Collin’s solo work, Living Colour, Giant, Bad English, Extreme, Stryper, Queen, Joe Satriani etc. But I was also into Earth Wind & Fire, The Yellowjackets, Koinonia, Chick Corea’s Electric and Acoustic bands and many, many more. And I also liked regular popmusic that was popular on the radio then, even with things like ‘new swing beat’, early rap/hiphop music, the start of house and dance music. We where into it all. Always listening, trading and discussing music.
Also I was really into audio equipment. Always constantly upgrading my stereo set (for what my budget could hold of course – remember, I was a teenager), new speakers, a better turn table, a Nakamichi cassette deck, all to get an even better sound. And at the church we went to I started doing the live sound, ‘cause every Sunday there was a full band with drums and all playing. Soon I was in charge of the sound, and working as a sound guy even at being just twelve years young. I experimented with recording bands with just a 2-track recorder. It was a fun time.
I had just started learning playing the drums after a few years of trying out a few other instruments like guitars and keyboards. The minute I sat behind the drums, I knew that this instrument was for me. Not long after that, I joined my first rock band. I had a few drumming hero’s that really inspired me all the time: Jeff Porcaro (RIP), Simon Phillips, Phil Collins, Dave Weckl, Neil Peart, Dean Castronovo and Will Calhoun.
And at that young age someone told me to pursue my dream, and if music was that dream, to really go for it. That was 1986, I was twelve years young and I already knew I wanted to end up in the music business. So I made a few very important decisions to completely arrange my life and my future in that way so that I could make my dreams come true. It defined my educational choices, where to live and what to do every day. In the end I studied drums at the conservatory.
After a few years of study drums at the conservatory, I was then about 21 years old, I started my own music business and have been a working music professional ever since. I was working as a session musician and drumming instructor, I played in bands, founded Novae Popschool, a music school and several other music based businesses and I build my own music studio. It took many years of hard work, struggle, successes and failures and Devine interventions, but finally after years and years of hard work, I got some succes in the music industry.
I’m 44 right now and living my dream (although it is not always a dream job). I strongly believe in the fact that we should pursue our dreams, not just a career like the rat race demands in these times we live in. Set life goals based on your dreams and calling, and go for those goals, whatever the costs and what ever age you start. It is probably not an easy road, but very fulfilling. I’m living proof that anyone can do what they love in life. I mean, if I can do it, you can too!

Toto, Rush, Genesis, Kansas, Mr. Mister, Phil Collins, Living Colour, Giant, Bad English, Extreme, Stryper, Queen, Joe Satriani…ロック以外にも Earth Wind & Fire, The Yellowjackets, Koinonia, Chick Corea’s Electric/Acoustic band なんかに入れ込んでいたね。

Q2: After incredible debut CD “Imbroccata”, it seems you joined Dilemma as a successor of Frank van Essen who joined Iona later, right?

【COLLIN】: Right after the release of Imbroccata, Frank started to play with Iona, and had no time left for Dilemma. I joined Dilemma somewhere late 1995, and in the same period our current guitar player Paul Crezee replaced original guitar player Toll. Two or three years later bass player Case left the band and was replaced with current bass player Erik van der Vlis. So with exception to Dec Burke, this line-up has been together since the late 90ties. Dec Burke joined Dilemma in 2015 during the recordings of Random Acts Of Liberation.

Q3: “Imbroccata” was released in 1995. And “Random Acts of Liberation” was released in last year 2018. Actually. how was the activity of Dilemma during this 23 years?

【COLLIN】: Imbroccata was released through SI Music, a division of Road Runner. After the release of our debut album we did a few tours and then went back into the studio. We where in the middle of recording a new album when SI Music went bankrupt and Road Runner pulled the plug on us, so that music never saw the light. In the years that followed, we tried to keep the band alive, but band members married, got jobs, got children and basically life happened. So slowly Dilemma faded away, and with that the band finally quit. But then in 2012 we got asked by Dutch progressive rock magazine IO Pages if we wanted to do a special one-off reunion concert on their annual music festival at the famous music venue De Boerderij in Zoetermeer (The Netherlands). So we did. And during the preparations for that show we noticed that we still had that Dilemma chemistry and that there where a lot of musical ideas coming up. We where not ready with Dilemma. There was still more music to be made. So we decided to reunite the band not only for that show, but to really revive the band again. So we started writing new songs. But in the midst of recording a new album, our original singer decided to part ways with the band. We then decided to fully re-write the album and hold auditions for a new singer. That took a long time, we auditioned many singers and in the process re-wrote the complete album a few times, ditched other songs, and wrote new ones. Finally I asked my British friend and singer/guitar player Dec Burke (who used to sing in Frost* and Darwin’s Radio), if he was interested in guesting on our album. And during the first recording session it became clear within minutes that Dec was the guy we where looking for, and that there was (and is) this great renewed chemistry between us all. In music and songwriting and also as friends, because Dilemma is not just a bunch of musicians working on great music, we are also grew into being great friends.

Q4: During that period, you collaborated with Neal Morse. How was working with one of the icon of prog?

【COLLIN】: That was a dream come true. It started with me writing reviews for that Dutch progressive rock magazine IO Pages and doing an interview with Neal about his first Testimony album. I was a big fan of both him and Mike Portnoy so it was great being able to do an interview. We kept in contact, and when a friend of mine organized a few acoustic concerts here in The Netherlands, I suggested Neal that I joined him on percussion, just to back him up (I knew he had done that before with Nick D’Virgilio due to the ‘Nick ‘n Neal live in Europe – Two Separate Gorillas’ CD I had). Luckily Neal said yes, and in the end we did a few acoustic tours in Europe together. During those tours I asked Neal many times when he would do full band tours again. Mike Portnoy was still in Dream Theater and too busy, and it was hard for Neal getting a band to Europe. So I suggested that I would form a European band with me on drums, and go out and tour. It took Neal a while to think about it, and then said: ‘Yes, let’s do it’! The rest is history. For seven years I was Neal’s live drummer, bandleader, tour manager and concert booker for the European shows and tours. During those tours we recorded several live albums and live DVD’s together. Neal is a musical genius, so it was such an honor to play that great music with him live on stages across Europe and learn from him both on stage and off stage.

Q5: On the other hand, collaboration with Kayak was not last long. What was the reason of that?

【COLLIN】: It was an honor to be asked for this and fun when it started. I have played with Kayak for about a year. During that period I learned that the format of Kayak is more like a project of Ton Scherpenzeel rather than being a band so I had a more of a session player role. As the year progressed I noticed that there where growing differences not only in musical approach, but also on a personal and organizational level. It was really just not a good fit, we where totally no match and we both felt it that way. I had already decided to quit after the tour, so when Ton told me early december ’18 that he did not want to continue anymore, I was okay with his decision as it freed me up to fully focus on Dilemma.

Q6: So, I really love a beautiful artwork of “Random Acts of Liberation”. Is there any concept or lyrical theme reflected the artwork in this record?

【COLLIN】: After we wrote all the songs and lyrics we discovered that every song somehow has to do with a form of liberation, freedom, interpersonal connection or the lack of or fear of those things. So without wanting to write a concept album, freedom in all it’s sorts and forms had become a constant theme throughout the album. Although ‘Random Acts Of Liberation’ is not a concept album, the more you’ll listen to it, the more you will discover the subtle connections in between the songs. It can be musically or lyrically. Our keyboard player Robin Z made the artwork and found this photo that really fits this theme.

Q6: “Random Acts of Liberation”

Q7: Actually, Mike Portnoy was first admirer of “Random Acts of Liberation”. It seems he is really into this record. He said it’s very tasty ‘modern prog’ ala new Spock’s, Frost, Flying Colors, Steven Wilson and Haken. What’s your perspective about his opinion?

【COLLIN】: I had sent Mike the album, and on a Friday morning I woke up to loads of emails and messages from people all over the world that they would like to hear our album, as they red Mike’s statement on his socials. We where blown away that he liked the album and he even included our album in his top 10 year list of 2018! So awesome! We are all influenced and inspired by all those bands he described, so it is a big honor that Mike and all the other prog-celebs we asked for a quote think we are up to par with those bands.

Q8: And how was touring with Sons of Apollo?

【COLLIN】: The European tour with Sons Of Apollo was an amazing experience. Eleven shows in six countries throughout Europe. It was our first big tour to promote the new album complete with our own nightliner tour bus and our own crew. It was such an honor to be asked by Mike Portnoy to join Sons Of Apollo on this tour. But then you have to make it happen. The tour happened a month before the release of the album so no-one in the audience knew our music. The audience did not come for us, did not know us and in certain venues they did not even know there was a support act, so every night we had to build it up from zero hoping the audience would dig our music and performance. And with great succes. We got so many awesome responses from the people attending the shows. And how awesome it is when in the middle of the tour you hear Mike say on his Instagram, “These guys are kicking ass every night”! Doing this tour really helped building the name and anticipation for the upcoming release.

【COLLIN】: SONS OF APOLLO

Q9: With joining Dec Burke, musically, it seems Dilemma goes to more “Progressive Pop” direction, I feel. Do you agree that?

【COLLIN】: Dilemma has always been about crossing the borders between melodic and progressive rock within pop structures and melodies with surprising twists and instrumental challenges. I believe that prog music should not only be clever and virtuoso, but also moves your emotions and your heart. And it should surprise you, taking you on a musical journey. People need to be able to connect from their heart with the music. Also I believe in a continues evolution of music and music styles keep merging. We wanted this album not to sound out-dated, but keep evolving from where we came from into the future. And I think we succeeded in that with this album to create music that combines progressive rock with a more open and straight, more poppy feel without loosing that what makes progressive rock progressive and interesting. As the producer of this album I also deliberately sought for a open sound, still thick and rocking, but also clear, open and accessible. Rich Mouser did such a great job in mixing our album that really helped us sound the way we do. We got loads of great album reviews that said that we successfully merged progressive rock with a more mainstream feel, and I think with this approach we really firmed our Dilemma sound.

【COLLIN】: DILEMMA

Q10: From Focus, Kayak to Ayreon, Vuur, Netherlands have been connected with prog rock scene strongly. What’s your thought about Netherlands prog scene?

【COLLIN】: There are quite a bunch of great progressive acts coming out of The Netherlands, as in the rest of Europe. As a small country you always have to adapt to what is going on around you. The Dutch have always been about trading and pioneering. This trading and pioneering mentality reflects upon musicians as well. Because the Dutch prog scene is small (small country), you have to branch out if you want to have succes with your prog band. So bands that make progressive music in The Netherlands often have an international focus. I also think there is a special musical connection between The Netherlands and Japan, ‘cause not only in the progressive rock scene, but also in jazz, blues and pop we see a lot of Dutch bands and artists touring in Japan. Although (unfortunately) I still have not been able to visit Japan, I know that Japan is filled with music lovers.

Q10: FOCUS, KAYAK, AYREON, VUUR

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED COLLIN’S LIFE

TOTO “THE SEVENTH ONE”

I could easily put every Toto album here, as they all are still a big part of the soundtrack of my life’. That music is timeless, and so inspiring. The groove of Jeff Porcaro, the feel of the complete band, Steve Lukather’s guitar playing, the songwriting. It’s all just so good and magical.

SIMON PHILLIPS “PROTOCOL”

This first EP of Simon opened my eyes and ears to a mix between jazzrock/fusion and progressive rock. I’ve been a fan ever since, bought all his solo work and lots of other albums he played on and his music and his drumming has been very important in my development. He’s such a master on the drums!

DREAM THEATER “IMAGES AND WORDS”

This album really opened my eyes for a new way of making progressive rock. Still one of my favorite albums. Mike’s drum parts are so an intricate part of the overall composition. Not just ‘wing it’ and improvise but also really dig in and write a great drumpart. Also due to my work with Neal Morse where I really had to study Mike’s parts, it formed me as a player, and I adapted a part of his playing style.

LIVING COLOUR “VIVID”

This and all other Living Colour albums gave me much inspiration as a drummer. To hear a drummer that really rocks out and at the same time plays with soul and a swing attitude. For me that opened my eyes to always make rock swing. Not just square and straight, but have feel and groove and let it roll.

LIVING COLOUR

RUSH “HOLD YOUR FIRE”

This was my first Rush album, when I was just still a teenager. I loved the songs and the drumming. After this album, I went all in with Rush and bought all the albums.

NEAL MORSE “?”

This album has brought the biggest change in my life and my life as a musician, as it was the first tour I played drums with Neal for and because of working with Neal that made me a name in the progressive rock scene. Without me working with Neal my drumming career would have been so different.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

Yes, I always sought for Japanese versions of albums, as most of the time they had great bonus tracks that where not available anywhere else. So Japan has always been a part of my musical journey. And for years it is my personal dream to come to Japan, to visit and meet the lovely people and tour and make music in your great country! Hopefully this will happen some time soon.
So if everyone in Japan that loves good progressive and melodic rock music will buy Random Acts Of Liberation, we have a chance that this will happen sooner than later! haha.
Thank you for your support, and enjoy Random Acts Of Liberation!
