DISC REVIEW “WAR WITHIN ME”
「良い時も困難な時も、俺のファンは俺と一緒にいてくれたからね。俺が自分自身を信じられなくなったときだって、彼らは俺のことを信じてくれたんだから。絶望的な気持ちになったときには励ましてくれた。だから、ファンが俺に作曲やレコーディング、演奏を求めてくれる限り、俺はやり続けるだろうな」
Blaze Bayley は、世界最大のメタルバンド IRON MAIDEN で5年という決して短くない時間を過ごしました。ミッドランドの小規模バンド WOLFSBANE からまさかの加入。誰もが羨むシンデレラ・ストーリー。しかし、そんな栄光の裏側で Blaze は一人、もがき苦しんでいました。偉大なる万能のシンガー、前任者 Bruce Dickinson の後任という重圧。がむしゃらが力となった WOLFSBANE よりも、丁寧に音程を追わねばという不自由な足枷。鳴り止まぬファンからのバッシング。
「当時、メイデンのファンの多くは俺を嫌っていたし、25年経った今でも嫌っている人は多いと思う。でも、この2枚のアルバムでは素晴らしい曲が書けたと思うし、この2枚はメイデンを語る上で重要な意味を持っているんだ」
25年の月日を経た現在でも、Blaze の中に巣食う仄暗い感情は拭い去れてはいないようです。それでも、Blaze があのバンドにいた意味はきっとありました。たしかに、”X-Factor” はアルバムの暗い荘厳と Blaze の不安定な音程がミスマッチの感はありましたが、”Virtual Ⅺ” のよりキャッチーでカラフルな音使いは彼のガッツやエナジーと調和を見せ始めていましたし、Steve Harris の奮戦も相俟って現在の大作化した “エピック・メイデン” への礎を築いたようにも思えます。実際、今 “Virtual Ⅺ” を聴けばメイデンのプログサイドとキャッチーサイドが完璧に交わった快作以外の感想が出てきませんし、仮に Bruce が歌っていたとしたら壮大になりすぎて別物の作品となっていたはずです。
「俺のファンが落ち込んでいるとしたら、このアルバムは彼らに力を与えるものでなければならない。俺がメタルを続けるため自分自身に言い聞かせていることの一部をファンに伝えたかった。もし君が弱っていても、強くなって戻ってこられる。もし君が壊れてしまっても、治すことはできる。もし君が他の人と違っていても、決して一人ではないんだよ」
あれから四半世紀。Blaze Bayley はただひたすらその人生を、ピュア・メタルとファンのために捧げ続けてきました。そんな英国のメタル侍の姿はある意味、Blaze にとっての恩返しでもあります。批判を浴びても決して自分を無下に扱わなかった IRON MAIDEN への恩返し。苦しい時も自分を信じてサポートを続けてくれたファンへの恩返し。そうして Blaze は、このコロナ禍で苦悶の時を過ごすファンのために最大の恩返しとなる “War Within Me” を贈りました。
「”War Within Me” の制作を始めたとき、俺たちは興奮と自由を感じたんだ。10曲ができあがった。10曲が互いに関連している必要はなかったけれど、残忍で力強く、真実を示していて、俺たちが作れる最高の曲でなければならなかった。そして楽曲のアレンジは、それぞれのストーリーに忠実なものでなければならなかった。妥協なく、勇気と誠実さを示さなければならなかった」
Blaze Bayley が IRON MAIDEN から巣立って25年。その歩みの結晶こそ “War Within Me”。内なる葛藤を乗り越えた侍の逆襲には、メタルのすべてが詰まっています。Blaze にとって作曲のパートナーであり卓越したギタリストでもある Chris Appleton との出会いは、さながらそのエンジンにハイオクとナイトロを搭載したようなものでした。ACCEPT のように勇壮で、IRON MAIDEN のように知的で、MEGADETH のようにテクニカルで、MOTORHEAD のように粗暴。これほどメタルらしいメタルをしたためるアーティストが今日どれほど存在するでしょうか。それにしても素晴らしいギタープレイヤーですね。
インタビュー中では Tim “Ripper” Owens に向けたシンパシーについて言及していますが、もしかすると、Blaze Bayley にとって目指すべきは Udo Dirkschneider なのかもしれませんね。特異すぎるその声、勇壮を体現したかのような容姿、そして時に本家を凌ぐような凄まじい楽曲とパフォーマンス。さらに、ウィリアム・ブラックのSFトリロジーにしても、チューリング、テスラ、ホーキンスの科学者をテーマとした組曲にしても、さながら “Aces High” のような303部隊の攻防にしても、Blaze Bayley は何よりメタルのロマンを誰よりも深く理解しています。インタビューでは Blaze の、意外なほどの知への探究心を感じられるでしょう。

Q1: It’s wonderful to see you so full of confidence and energy these days! First of all, could you tell us about the story and what inspired you to create that epic sci-fi trilogy?
【BLAZE】: The Infinite Entanglement trilogy is my greatest musical achievement. It was 3 albums in 3 years with 3 tours based on one story, about what makes us human. What does it mean to be human? 34 songs about William Black and his journey, from earth to a new world. Surviving his own inner darkness, betrayal, lies and finding redemption. I am so proud of it.
Q1: 最近のあなたは、自信とエナジーに満ちているようですね！まずは、最新作の前に連続リリースされた “SF三部作” についてお話ししていただけますか？
【BLAZE】: “Infinite Entanglement” の3部作は、俺にとって最大の音楽的な功績となった。3年間で3枚のアルバムを制作し、3回のツアーを行ったんだ。
“何が人を人たらしめるのか？”という1つの疑問を中心としたストーリーに基づいているんだ。人間であるとはどういうことなのか？ウィリアム・ブラックと、地球から新世界への彼の旅路を描いた34曲さ。彼自身の心の闇、裏切り、嘘、贖罪を見つけすべてを乗り越えて生き残る。俺はあのトリロジーをとても誇りに思っているよ。
Q2: On the other hand, this time “War Within Me” feels like a return to reality. For example, “303” is a tribute to a Polish pilot, isn’t it? What does “War” within you mean to you this time?
【BLAZE】: My fans make all of this possible because of their loyal support over so many years. Through Good times and difficult times, my fans have stayed with me. They believed in me when I lost belief in myself. They encouraged me to keep going when I felt hopeless. As long as my fans want me to write and record and perform, I will continue. I know I’m very lucky to have such wonderful fans. I’m so grateful to them. They have made it possible for me to make my ‘War Within Me’ album.
We were scheduled to write and record a new studio album in 2020. We planned to fit that in with some very cool festivals and some nice headline shows, to celebrate the vinyl release of my Tenth Dimension album. But soon, everything changed for us, just like it did for everyone else. Our last show was a sold out gig in London in March 2020. Everything after that was postponed or cancelled. It was very sad and unpleasant, but it did mean we had more time to spend writing the ‘War Within Me’ album.
We decided to make simple demos with just acoustic guitar and voice. Focus on the shape and vibe and emotion of each idea. We were able to take time away from these new ideas, not listening to them for a couple of weeks, then come back to them, and listen to them with a fresh mind. We were able to be more objective and pay attention to details very closely. I knew my fans were waiting patiently for my next studio album and I felt deep down that we had to try to do something that would help them through these difficult times, the same way that they had helped me get through dark and uncomfortable times in my own life.
Starting to work on the ‘War Within Me’ album, we had a sense of excitement and freedom. 10 individual songs that could stand alone. They did not have to be connected to each other, but they still had to feel brutal and powerful and show truth, and be the absolute best songs we were able write. Our arrangements of those songs must be faithful to their individual stories. They must show uncompromising courage and honesty.
Chris and I talked a lot about the overall feeling of this album. It had to feel positive. If my fans felt low, this record must make them feel empowered. I wanted to say to my fans some of the things I say to myself to keep going. We were careful with every journey of every song. ‘If you are weak you can grow strong. If you are broken you can mend. If you are different you are not alone.’ The music and the emotions of the lyrics had to fit together on every song we wrote. I know it sounds pretentious and arrogant and melodramatic but it’s true.
303 is the squadron of Polish and Czech pilots that joined the RAF in WW2. They were a very important part of the battle of Britain and one of the reasons Britain is a free country today. Those brave young men have my gratitude and my deepest respect.

俺たちは、2020年に新しいスタジオアルバムを書いてレコーディングする予定だった。それに合わせて、”Tenth Dimension” アルバムのレコードリリースを記念して、とてもクールなフェスティバルや素敵なヘッドラインショーも計画していたんだ。だけどすぐに、他の人たちと同様、すべてが変わってしまった。俺たちの最後のショーは、2020年3月にロンドンで行われたソールドアウトのギグになった。それ以降はすべて延期やキャンセルになってしまったんだよ。それはとても悲しく、不愉快なことだったけど、そのおかげで “War Within Me” のアルバム制作に費やす時間が増えたとも言えるんだ。
俺たちは、アコースティックギターとボーカルだけのシンプルなデモを作ることにした。それぞれのアイデアの形や雰囲気、感情に焦点を当ててね。そうして、そういった新しいアイデアから距離をおいて、2週間ほど聴かないようにして、それからまた戻ってきて、新鮮な気持ちで聴くための時間を取ることができた。俺たちはより客観的になり、細部にまで注意を払うことができたっまわけさ。ファンの皆が俺の次のスタジオアルバムを首を長くして待ってくれていることを知っていたんだ。だから、皆が俺の人生で暗くて不快な時期を乗り越えるのを助けてくれたのと同じように、ファンの皆のためにこの困難な時期を乗り越えるのを助けなければならないと心の底から思っていたんだよ。

Q3: It is very interesting to see Alan Turing, Nicola Tesla, Stephen Hawking, all appearing in succession. Why did you choose to use them as the title of the song?
【BLAZE】: The three scientists are heroes for different reasons.
Nikola Tesla made AC electrical current available, it is that electricity that lights our world. He invented many things and he was, it seems, an awkward strange type of genius. The song was also awkward and strange to write and record.
Alun Turing is the godfather of modern computing. The Turing test is how A.I. will be recognised. But it is a test in which the subject, the machine, must deceive the human observer, to pass the test. I ask this question. If A.I. must lie to be born, how can we trust it?
Stephen Hawking was told by a doctor that he had only 3 years to live. 49 years later he was giving a lecture even though he had no select in his own voice and he found a way to communicate and overcome a seemingly impossible physical situation.
I wanted to celebrate these incredible people using the enormous power and passion of metal music.

【BLAZE】: 3人の科学者がヒーローになった理由はそれぞれ違うんだよね。

アラン・チューリングは、現代コンピューティングのゴッドファーザーだよね。チューリング・テストは、A.I.がどのように認識されるかを示すものだ。だけど、テストに合格するためには、被験者である機械が、人間の観察者を欺かなければならないんだよ。俺はこのように問いかける。もしA.I.が生まれるために嘘をつかなければならないとしたら、俺たちはどうやってA.I.を信じることができるんだろう？ってね。

Q4: The music in “War Within Me” is amazing! It’s brave, technical, intelligent, and powerful. There’s not many metal albums out there today that sound as metal as this album, would you agree?
【BLAZE】: The sound of ‘War Within Me’ was part of my vision from the start. I wanted to get the intensity of my Blood and Belief , and Man Who Would Not Die albums but with a bit more space and simplicity.

Q5: Iron Maiden is going to release a new album “Senjutsu”. You seem to have a good relationship with Bruce Dickinson and the rest of the band. Have you listened to any of Iron Maiden’s work since you left the band? If so, what do you think about them?
【BLAZE】: My favourite songs are Paschendale and Blood Brothers but I like most of the new songs.

Q6: I started listening to Iron Maiden when you were in the band. So, I’m very happy to hear that “X-Factor” and “Virtual Ⅺ” are being re-evaluated these days. Looking back, what do those two albums mean to you, and is there any unfinished business with Iron Maiden?
【BLAZE】: I really hate business. My wonderful talented hard-working manager deals with all the business. He makes it possible for me to deal with just the songs and the music and the performance.

Q7: When Bruce decided to come back to Iron Maiden, you didn’t complain or say bad things, you just left the band quietly, and have been making metal albums that sound like metal ever since. I love your attitude and think of you as a British samurai. In fact, did you have a lot to say when you left the band?
【BLAZE】: There were many great singers available to Maiden. My voice was quite different to what they had before. I think that’s why they chose me. I was very surprised they chose me. They phoned me to say that I got it. I was shocked. Happy, but shocked.
I’m very proud of my brief time with Iron Maiden. It was a dream for me to be able to tour for 9 months at a time, and write songs with people who are so talented, successful and generous with their time and advice. Its 25 years ago. A lot of Maiden fans hated me back then and many still do. I think we wrote some great songs on the 2 albums and they are important in the story of Iron Maiden. In my solo career I have made 11 studio albums, 4 live Albums and 3 DVDs.
I got great support and encouragement from a lot of Maiden fans. When Bruce was in the band some people were asking for Paul to come back. When I was in the band some people asked for Bruce to come back. It was the top job in the world for a heavy metal singer. I wrote and recorded a top 10 hit with Iron Maiden. Mostly it was a lot of fun. I was living my dream.
Priest had a reunion. Deep purple had a reunion. Black sabbath had a reunion. It just made sense for Maiden to have a reunion too. I was very well treated by the band when I left. Bruce is one of the greatest frontmen and singers ever in the history of music. He has alwayS been very supportive to me, before, during, and after I was with Maiden. The world needs Iron Maiden. That is a metal fact!

Q8: At the same time that you joined and left Iron Maiden, Tim “Ripper” Owens also joined and left JUDAS PRIEST. Do you feel any sympathy for him?
【BLAZE】: Tim is a great singer. We have known each other for many years and have become good friends. We have often performed together. He is wonderful person. We went through a very similar experience.

The voice of Bruce Dickinson and the powerful rhythms gripped me. This is an album I would listen to when I was 18 years old working nights, cleaning the hotel I worked at. I saw Maiden 4 times in Birmingham, near my home. I came to love them. I never dreamed I would have the great honour of becoming the singer and writing with those giants of metal music.

I was an ordinary boy of 17, listening alone on a walkman in my bedroom in the dark with my eyes closed. This was my first led zeppelin album. It opened my imagination and took me far away from the small town I lived in when my eyes were open.
伝説的な同名のコンサート映画のサウンドトラック。17歳の平凡な少年だった俺は、寝室で暗闇の中、目を閉じてウォークマンでこの作品を一人聴いていた。これは俺にとって初めての ZEP のアルバムだった。このアルバムは俺の想像力を広げ、住んでいた小さな町から遠くへ連れて行ってくれました。
BLACK SABBATH “BLACK SABBATH”
Spooky and disturbing. It asked me many questions. The first question was, how can four people make this darkness ? It taught me that music can be uncomfortable but still hypnotic. It changed my perception of darkness.
不気味で不穏な感じ。この作品は俺に多くの疑問を投げかけた。まず最初の疑問は、どうやって4人でこの暗闇を作ることができるのか？音楽は不快なものであっても催眠効果があることを教えてくれた。俺の闇に対する認識が変わったんだ。
SEX PISTOLS “NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE’S THE SEX PISTOLS”
Shocking irreverent and brilliant.The shape of planet earth changed for me and my school friends when we heard the record. It seemed to be the most dangerous recording in musical history. We felt we became dangerous when we listened to it. This album started a fire that would burn forever in my teenage heart . Truth and rebellion had a soundtrack .

In 1984 I started out with the dream of being a professional heavy metal singer. a lot of people said I couldn’t sing and I would never make it as a singer. Now I am actually living my dream.
