EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN COOK OF RUSSIAN CIRCLES !!
Chicago-Based Instru-Metal Trio, RUSSIAN CIRCLES Has Just Released Organic and Dynamic New Record “Guidance” !!
DISC REVIEW “GUIDANCE”
SUMAC, THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES, MAMIFFER
RUSSIAN CIRCLES “GUIDANCE” : 9.6/10
【INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN COOK】
Q1: Hi, Brian! You’ve been to Japan many times. How was the impression of Japan and gigs? Did you enjoyed our country?
【BRIAN】: I do enjoy Japan. I’ve only been there a few times—once with Russian Circles, once with Sumac, and twice with These Arms Are Snakes. The shows are always a good time, but I really enjoy seeing how Japanese society operates. There is definitely a little bit of “culture shock” when we go to Japan, but it also seems very utopian compared to a lot of countries in the Western Hemisphere. It’s a strange place for us, but it’s also very hospitable and welcoming.
RUSSIAN CIRCLES, SUMAC で1度づつ、THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES で2度訪れただけなんだけどね。
Q2: You are known as one of the best bassist of the scene. You know, you can play everything from Heavy Rock, Math-Rock, Post-Rock, Prog to Jazz. Could you tell us about your musical upbringing?
【BRIAN】: I don’t have much musical training. I took about six months of piano lessons when i was 7 years old and that’s about it as far as musical upbringing. I don’t consider myself to be a very good bassist either. But i’ve been doing this for 25 years now, so I guess I’ve learned how to get by. Mainly, i just try to make things interesting without being too complicated. It’s just a balance between having a short attention span and limited ability.
Q3: Your newest album is just out now! When you named this amazing album “Guidance”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or inspiration of the record?
【BRIAN】: We had the album art long before we had an album title. We knew we wanted something that addressed this general indecision and lack of clarity in our lives. We’re all in our late thirties and I think we’re very aware of how fortunate we are to be able to continue making music in this capacity. But we’re also aware that this is something that could disappear at any time. We’re very aware of our frailty and the instability of living the artists’ life. Guidance just seemed like a good term to address our uncertain futures.
Q4: Kurt Ballow produced “Guidance”. You also worked with him on Sumac. How was his work? He is one of the most popular producer in the Metal scene, what’s the reason of that?
【BRIAN】: A lot of heavy music puts an emphasis on perfection. Musicians want things to be precise and articulate. And that’s fine, but my attraction to punk and hardcore and metal has always been more about how raw and unrefined it can sound, and i hate seeing so much modern recording and production techniques eliminating that human component to the music. If i want crisp production, flawless tempos, and pristine performances, i’ll listen to electronic music. I want to hear the push-and-pull that occurs between live musicians. I want to get the impression that things could fall apart at any moment, that the musicians are struggling to contain the music, that they’re barely able to deliver the songs because the sheer creative momentum and passion could just cause the whole thing to explode. I think Kurt is really good at making records that sound clear and articulate but still have that raw, unbridled delivery. His recordings sound like real bands, not plastic paint-by-numbers heavy metal.
Q5: Lot’s of medias, fans, say “Guidance” is your masterpiece. Certainly, “Guidance” is so emotional, organic and dynamic. It’s very film-like dramatic record. How do you separate “Guidance” from your past works?
【BRIAN】: There’s an ongoing struggle between wanting to make a record that’s a stand-alone statement and a record that’s a document of the band as a live entity. Do we make records to promote the live show or do we play live to support the record? Personally, I think the live show is more important because that’s the context where i feel the strongest emotional connection with the material, but that’s a very solipsistic attitude to take. Most people will only really know the band through our records. I feel like we tend to go back and forth in terms of creating songs that are very much meant to be experienced as recordings versus songs that are meant to be experienced live. Geneva and Memorial were both inadvertently written with the studio in mind, while i think Guidance is more in the tradition of Empros and Station in that all the songs really flourish in the live setting. But I also think we’ve gotten better at balancing out the two approaches, and Guidance is the best example of us figuring out how to capture the live essence of the band while also making a good sounding record.
Q6: Like your previous release “Memorial” featured Chelsea Wolfe, Russian Circles occasionally uses vocals. So, what’s vocal to Russian Circles? What made you stick to Instru-Metal and three piece?
【BRIAN】: We’re all very open to new ideas, but ultimately we want to be able to recreate these songs live. Vocals just make it more difficult to do that. We were very fortunate to do a European tour with Chelsea Wolfe where she could sing “Memorial” with us, but there is definitely a part of me that is very sad that we don’t get to play that song more often.
Q7: Post-Metal, Post-Rock, which is more suitable for “Guidance”?
【BRIAN】: I don’t care for either term. I grew up playing in hardcore bands, and I was very happy to wear the hardcore badge. We belonged to the hardcore community; we toured with other hardcore bands; and we were indebted to the hardcore bands that came before us. With Russian Circles, we just want to be able to do whatever we want. I think we cover a pretty diverse of tonal and stylistic territory, so having someone say “oh, they’re a post-metal band” seems to over-simplify our approach. Having someone lump songs like “Memorial”, “Mota”, “Praise Be Man”, “Mladek”, “Ethel”, “When The Mountain Comes to Muhammad”, and “Calla” all under one blanket term seems dismissive. Furthermore, we rarely play with other post- bands. We prefer playing with bands like Young Widows, Chelsea Wolfe, Helms Alee, Deafheaven, and Cloakroom… bands that share a general vibe but don’t share the same timbre. We barely listen to or engage with either the post-rock or post-metal scenes. I feel like most post- bands that we’ve played with share our general apathy towards the genre. I like the guys in This Will Destroy You and i think they’re a great band, and I know those guys don’t like being lumped in with post-rock. We’re longtime friends and practice space room-mates with Pelican, and i know those guys preferred playing with bands like Daughters as opposed to playing with post-metal artists. At the end of the day, if i read about a band with “post-” being used to describe them, I immediately lose interest. Aside from Total Control and Diät, i can’t think of a single current post-punk band that i like. I guess i liked a number of post-hardcore bands, but most of those bands were groups that i liked before I ever heard the term applied to them… bands like Shellac and Fugazi and Monorchid. Sorry to be a grump about this stuff, but I just generally dislike how genre names tend to pigeonhole artists. Please, let’s find a new way to talk about music.
Memorial”, “Mota”, “Praise Be Man”, “Mladek”, “Ethel”, “When The Mountain Comes to Muhammad”, “Calla” といった楽曲たちを、総括的に一つの単語でまとめてしまうのは、愚かな行為に思えるよ。
THIS WILL DESTROY YOU は好きだよ。
Q8: So, I interviewed Aaron Turner recently. He said “Brian seemed like a logical choice – we’ve been friends for many years, I love his playing and his sound, and we’d been on numerous Mamiffer albums together already.” Ok, it’s your turn, what’s Aaron Turner to you?
【BRIAN】: Aaron is a big advocate for music. You can’t go to a record shop with the guy without him walking out with a stack of new albums. There isn’t a day of the week where he’s not wearing a band shirt for some obscure group you’ve never heard of. And ultimately, both Hydra Head and SIGE Records have created a legacy of supporting artists whose work will never be lucrative. He invests in things he believes in as opposed to things that will be good investments. He’s a relentlessly creative person, but he’s also just an avid fan of underground music.
