DISC REVIEW “HEROES OF MIGHTY MAGIC”
Twilight Kingdom から現れた、Adventure Metal の使者 TWILIGHT FORCE が待望の2ndアルバム “Heroes of Mighty Magic” をリリースしました！！ここ日本でも、その独特でヒロイックなパフォーマンス、コスチュームが話題となっているバンドですが、音楽的にも格段に進化を遂げた作品は、彼らの地位を確固たるものにするでしょう。
インタビューでは、頑なにメンバー、いや6人のヒーローたちは Twilight Kingdom から現れたと語っていますが、後半では Falun がホームタウンだと口を滑らせていますので、おそらくはスウェーデンに Twilight Kingdom への扉が存在するのでしょう。とにかく、TWILIGHT FORCE は OPETH や IN FLAMES を輩出したメタルキングダム、スウェーデンが生んだ新たな才能です。最近では SABATON が自らのフェスを主催するほどの人気ですが、TWILIGHT FORCE は公私共に同郷である SABATON の兄弟分的な存在でもありますね。
映画 “The Lord of the Rings” から抜け出してきたかのような出で立ちの6人のヒーローは、実際 Power Metal というジャンルを救う救世主なのかも知れません。BLIND GUARDIAN, SONATA ARCTICA, RHAPSODY といったバンドが全盛だった2000年あたりをピークに、このジャンルに対する注目度は減退し続けて来たように思います。そこには、ある意味、型に拘る様式美の限界が存在したのかも知れませんね。
TWILIGHT FORCE の “Adventure Metal” はしかし、インタビューにもあるように、その停滞を打ち破る ｢Power Metal の最も洗練された強烈な表現法であり、進化の頂点｣ だと言えます。確かにデビュー作 “Tales of Ancient Prophecies” にはキラリと光る才能の片鱗こそ多分に散りばめられてはいましたが、サウンドやコンポジションにまだまだ垢抜けない部分も少なからず存在していました。しかし、Nuclear Blast というビッグディールを得て臨んだ長尺コンセプトアルバム “Heroes of Mighty Magic” にはまさに Blackwald の言葉を具現化した、極上のエピックワールドが広がっているのです。
進化の頂点たる所以は、Blackwald が語るように、その作曲方法にあるのかも知れません。ピアノから取り掛かり、ほぼ完成形まで進めてから他の楽器を導入するという彼らのやり方は、このジャンルにおいては非常に珍しいように思います。しかし、確かに旋律、ハーモニー、リズムを同時に考慮可能なピアノは、一元的なギターやドラムスから始めるよりも豊かな可能性が存在するようにも思えますね。
そしてその手法から生み出された、時にプログレッシブとも言えるほど非常に緻密で複雑なコンポジションは、格段に進歩したサウンドプロダクションの下、洗練されたオーケストレーション、勇壮でファンタジックなメロディー/クワイア、モダンなテクニックを内包することとなりました。その一方で、Power Metal の鋳型的な部分、特にクラシカルな要素を減退させ、代わりにフォークメタルのエッセンスを吸収することで、見事に映画やロールプレイングゲームのサウンドトラックに接近した独自の斬新なる Power Metal Symphony を完成させたのです。
勿論、アルバムはオープナー “Battle of Arcane Might” から疾走感とカタルシス、そしてシンガロングを誘発する魅惑の旋律を70分に渡って欠かすことはありません。ただ、ANGRA の Fabio Lione が参加した “There and Back Again”, SABATON の Joakim Broden が参加したタイトルトラック “Heroes of Mighty Magic” は共に10分に迫るドラマティックな1大エピックで、この2曲の構成力、スケール感こそ、まさにアルバムを象徴する楽曲と言えるのではないでしょうか。
今回、Blackwald が “人生を変えた5枚のアルバム”のトップに挙げている作品が BLIND GUARDIAN の “Nightfall in Middle-Earth” なのですが、実は完成した “Heroes of Mighty Magic” を初めて聴いた時、Blackwald は “Nightfall in Middle-Earth” を初めて聴いた時と似た感覚を覚えたそうです。
“Nightfall in Middle-Earth” も “The Lord of the Rings” の作者、トールキンの小説を下にしたファンタジックでエピックな長尺コンセプトアルバム。BLIND GUARDIAN が1998年に提示したのは、非常に緻密かつシネマティックな Power Metal を超えた異形の傑作でしたが、TWILIGHT FORCE は “Power Metal の守護者” の意思をしっかりと受け継ぎながら、現代的にアップデートした作品を閃かし、シーンに投げかけたようにも感じられました。
今回弊誌では、キーボード、ヴァイオリン、チェンバロを担当し、作曲、アレンジの中心でもある Blackwald にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。ぜひライブパフォーマンスの動画もチェックしていただきたいバンドです。どうぞ！！

Q1: TWILIGHT FORCE becomes so popular in Japanese Metal fans with your character and music. Did you know that? What’s your impression about Japan?
【BLACKWALD】: Greetings! This fills our hearts with joy and warmth! We had very little knowledge of our rising popularity in your venerable country! And we are indeed very happy to hear that! We are all very fond of Japan, with everything it has to offer, from your rich cultural history and heritage, to your very vibrant and intriguing music scene. It would be a dream come true for us to one day be able to come and perform in Japan, and to share our magic world with you all.
Q1: TWILIGHT FORCE の音楽やキャラクターに日本のファンは大変惹き付けられています。ご存知でしたか？
【BLACKWALD】: ありがとう！そのことを知って、僕たちの心は喜びと温かさで満ちているよ。君たちの尊い国で、そんなにファンが増えているなんてほとんど知らなかったからね。だからそれを聞いて本当に嬉しいよ！
メンバーはみんな日本が大好きなんだ。濃厚な文化的遺産や歴史から、活気に満ちた魅力的な音楽シーンまで全てがね。いつか日本でライブを行って、僕たちのマジックワールドをシェア出来たら本当に夢が叶うね。
Q2: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band? How did TWILIGHT FORCE come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name TWILIGHT FORCE?
【BLACKWALD】: Twilight Force emerged as an inevitable primordial life-force. The seething elixir of what finally became Twilight Force had been concocted for ages, and when the stars finally aligned, our existence was invoked like the spark of a magic flame. Twilight Force has always been. Dormant and watching. But we have now risen, for the sake and eternal glory of the mortal realm.
Our name is the manifestation of the archaic prophecies, and the epithet of the unity of the six heroes from six corners of the Twilight Kingdoms. These heroes constitutes what is today Twilight Force. As was foretold in the Book of Time.
Q2: 本誌初登場となります！まずはバンド結成の経緯とバンド名の由来を教えていただけますか？
【BLACKWALD】: TWILIGHT FORCE は不可欠な、生命力の根源として現れたんだよ。後に TWILIGHT FORCE となる沸き立つような命のスープは、長い年月をかけて混ざりあっていたんだけど、遂に星たちが1列に並んだ時、僕たちの存在はまるで魔法の炎がスパークするように召喚されたんだ。
TWILIGHT FORCE は常に存在するんだよ。眠りについて世界を見守っているんだ。だけど今、僕たちはこの人間界の永遠の栄光のために立ち上がったんだよ。
TWILIGHT FORCE という名前は、古代の予言と、Twilight Kingdom の6つの地方から6人のヒーローたちが現れ、種族を超えて結びついたことを象徴しているんだ。その6人のヒーローたちが今日の TWILIGHT FORCE なんだからね。そしてそれは”時の書”に予言されていたんだよ。
Q3: Your majestic heroic fantasy spirit, costume, worldview so called “Adventure Metal” is one of a kind your identity. Where did the idea come from?
【BLACKWALD】: The visual aspects of our performances and personae, is the inevitable outcome of our one true purpose. It is the embodiment of our destinies, and the sole representation of the world and mythical tales we wish to convey. Both the imagery, as well as our tonal language, calls for an adequate definitions. Hence, “Adventure Metal” came into existence. It is the perfect description of the emotions and senses that we wish to invoke and call forth. Adventure Metal is to us the most refined and intense manifestation of power metal, and the essence and pinnacle of its evolution. It is also our strive towards a synergy and a merge of contemporary sounds and a motion picture tonal language.
Q3: TWILIGHT FORCE の “Adventure Metal” と称される、壮大でヒロイックなスピリット、コスチューム、パフォーマンス、世界観は間違いなくバンドのアイデンティティーとなっています。こうしたアイデアを具現化しようと思ったのはなぜですか？
【BLACKWALD】: 僕たちのパフォーマンスとペルソナのビジュアル的な側面は、真の目的のためには避けて通れない道なんだよ。つまり、僕たちの運命を具現化した、伝えたい世界と神話の唯一の表現方法なんだ。音での表現と同様に、イメージも定義する必要があったんだよ。そうして “Adventure Metal” が生まれたのさ。
その言葉はは僕たちが喚起したい感情や感覚を完璧に表現しているね。”Adventure Metal” とは Power Metal の最も洗練された強烈な表現方法で、その進化の本質であり頂点なんだよ。僕たちは現代的なサウンドと、映画の音色を融合し、その相乗効果を狙っているんだ。
Q4: Anyway, your newest album “Heroes of Mighty Magic” is just out now ! When you named it “Heroes of Mighty Magic”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept of the record?
【BLACKWALD】: The conceptual purpose of Heroes of Mighty Magic is to open the gateway into the Twilight Kingdoms, and to take the first trembling steps and glimpse into the tales and history of our magical realms. This is only the beginning however, and many more prophecies and in-depth lore will undoubtedly be unravelled in the future to come.
The title of the album is undeniably our humble tribute to one of the greatest interactive entertainment experiences ever conceived. The similarly named game series has brought countless hours of joy to our lives, and continues to do so to this day and age still.
Q4: 待望の最新作 “Heroes of Mighty Magic” がリリースされましたね！タイトルの由来、併せてアルバムのコンセプトを教えていただけますか？
【BLACKWALD】: “Heroes of Mighty Magic” の目的となったコンセプトは、Twilight Kingdoms へのゲートウェイを開き、身震いするような最初の1歩を踏み出し、僕たちの魔法世界の物語と歴史を垣間見せることだったんだ。だけどこれは始まりに過ぎないんだよ。多くの予言とより深い伝承が、疑いなく将来明らかになるだろうね。
アルバムのタイトルが、僕たちが今まで経験した中で、最も偉大なインタラクティブエンターテインメントへのトリビュートであることは否定できないね。つまり、”Heroes of Might and Magic” というゲームシリーズに因んで名付けたんだよ。測り切れないくらいの時間、喜びを僕たちの人生にもたらしてくれたし、今でもプレイし続けているんだからね。
Q5: How was the writing process? Definitely, your newest album is scaled-up in all respects. How have you changed or evolved from your previous release “Tales of the Ancient Prophecies”?
【BLACKWALD】: While the fundaments of our musical core remains, and the exuberant life-force of our first album is still ever present; a lot has changed. It is swifter. It is more lasting. It is even more triumphant. It is aeons more complex in orchestration and craftsmanship while maintaining simplicity in its blitheness and focusing on memorable melodies and an accessible tonal language. It is emotionally invigorating as well as exhausting. It is an intense dragon ride amidst vastly diverse moods; and a voyage through magic worlds and ancient times. As for the writing process, we always start with the piano. We feel composing on a guitar or other instruments is rather limiting, considering timbres and harmonic possibilities. We add basic orchestral elements and melodies to the piano part until we have all the groundwork for a whole song laid out. All the material on Heroes of Mighty Magic was composed and arranged by Lynd and me. And a better part of the opus was eternalised in our own studio, The Twilight Forge (even though we did utilise several other facilities and locations for specific elements and purposes). When a composition and arrangement is completed for a certain piece, and the meticulous trial and errors have all been made, all members join in to add their individual performances to the groundwork. It is a splendidly efficient and rewarding way to create, giving us all the options and time we need to revise and redo until everything is to everyones satisfaction .
Q5: “Heroes of Mighty Magic” は、前作 “Tales of the Ancient Prophecies” から全ての面でスケールアップしていますが、ライティングプロセスでの変化や、この作品で特に進化を遂げた点について話していただけますか？
【BLACKWALD】: 確かに多くの変化があったと思う。だけどね、基盤となる僕たちの音楽的な核は残っているし、ファーストアルバムの豊かな生命力もしっかりと存在しているんだよ。ただ、新作はより速く、永続的で、意気揚揚とした作品だと思う。
オーケストレーションや技巧はより複雑になったけど、シンプルさの中にある鮮やかさを維持しながら、記憶に残るメロディーで、キャッチーに僕たちのメッセージを伝えることにフォーカスしているんだ。
感情的には爽快だし、同時に消耗もするね。非常に多様な感情、ムードが渦巻くハラハラのドラゴンライドで、魔法世界と古の時への旅なのさ。
ライティングプロセスについて言えば、僕たちはまずピアノから作曲を始めるんだよ。ギターや他の楽曲で作曲を行うのは、音色やハーモニーの可能性を考えれば、少々限界があると感じているからね。そして、楽曲全体のレイアウトが全て決まった後、基本的なオーケストレーションやメロディーをピアノに加えていくんだよ。”Heroes of Mighty Magic” の全てのマテリアルは Lynd と僕が作ってアレンジしたんだ。
作品に永遠に残る、素晴らしいパートは僕たちのスタジオ The Twilight Forge で作られたものだよ。他の施設や場所も特定の目的で使用したにもかかわらずね。
楽曲の作曲とアレンジが完了し、細かな試行錯誤が行われた後、全てのメンバーが個々のパフォーマンスを加えるために参加するんだ。驚くほど効率的で、やりがいのあるやり方だよ。修正し、やり直す必要があるなら、全てを全員が満足するまで、選択肢と時間を与えることが出来るんだからね。
Q6: The guest appearances, Joakim Broden and Fabio Lione are also amazing! Could you tell us about the story of their joining?
【BLACKWALD】: We are beyond thrilled and humbled to have two such grand titans of the genre contributing to “Heroes of Mighty Magic”. Fabio was, incidentally, on tour with Rhapsody Of Fire at the time, and was about to perform at Sabaton Open Air here in our home town. Thus, the opportunity arose to conveniently record him with very little logistical trouble. We brought him to our studio and played him the material, and his wondrous musicality really brought a magical spark of life to the song. Interestingly enough, only a fraction of the song ‘There and Back Again’ was actually completed at the time of the Fabio recording, but he still managed to embrace the mood and feeling we desired, and we were able to put it all together when the song was later completed. Joakim and Sabaton are long time friends of ours, and to have Joakim perform on this album too is a great privilege and honour. Ever since his astounding vocal performance on our previous album, we knew that we somehow wanted to incorporate his thunderous vocal resources in the future too. And to our joy, he happily agreed to participate once again. So when the time came, we found the absolute perfect section for Joakims voice, and he made that part of the title track take to the skies like the soaring flames from a legendary arch-dragon. Absolutely amazing.

【BLACKWALD】: このジャンルにおける偉大な巨人2人が “Heroes of Mighty Magic” に貢献してくれたことは、非常に光栄だし、興奮しているんだよ。Fabio は偶然にもちょうどその時、RHAPSODY OF FIRE でツアーに出ていて、僕たちのホームタウン Falun で Sabaton Open Air に出演するところだったんだ。だから地理的な問題に悩まされることなく、レコーディングに参加してもらうことが出来たのさ。
彼を僕たちのスタジオに連れて行って、マテリアルを聴かせたんだけど、彼の驚異的な音楽的センスは、魔法のような生命の火花を楽曲にもたらしてくれたね。
興味深いことに、Fabio が参加した時にはまだ、 “There and Back Again” は一部分しか完成していなかったんだけど、彼は僕たちが望む雰囲気や感情を上手く掴んでくれたんだ。だから後に楽曲が完成した時に、彼のボーカルを挿入することが出来たんだよ。
Joakim と SABATON は長年の友人なんだよ。彼にアルバムで歌ってもらえることも、特別だし光栄だね。前作で彼が驚くべき歌唱を披露してくれてから、僕たちは何とか彼のイナズマのようなボーカルを将来的にも取り入れたいと願っていたんだよ。だからその機会が訪れた時、僕たちは Joakim の声に完璧すぎるパートを見つけていたんだ。
彼の歌唱によって、タイトルトラックのそのパートは、伝説のアークドラゴンが炎を吐くように、天空へと舞い上がることが出来たんだよ。全くもって素晴らしいね。
Q7: Speaking of Fabio and Joakim, you are often compared with Rhapsody of Fire. What do you think about the comparison? And you are invited Sabaton Open Air. What’s the connection with Sabaton to you?
【BLACKWALD】: This is indeed not the first time we have heard the comparison to Rhapsody (of Fire). And we fully understand, and even support it; based on our first album. There is no denying our obvious influences from the early works of such groundbreaking pioneers of the genre. Pioneers of which works we have wholeheartedly enjoyed over the years. However – that, and other comparisons will hopefully be slowly washed away, following the recent release of ’‘Heroes of Mighty Magic”. It is our intention and natural progression to take our music towards a slightly different sound than the aforementioned act, with a more intricate fusion of motion picture tonal language and adventurous soundscapes, and fewer “baroque-esque” and classical influences. We have set out to embark on a journey to explore musical landscapes never before experienced.
The venerable members of Sabaton have been our dear friends for a very long time. We have enjoyed many starlit nights around campfires together, and have also done battle side by side under various circumstances many times over the years. We are proud to call them our brethren, and cannot give them enough praise for both their marvellous accomplishments as well as their precious friendship..
Q7: TWILIGHT FORCE は、しばしばその Fabio がいた RHAPSODY OF FIRE と比較されますね？ また、Joakim の SABATON とは同郷で、繋がりも深いようですが？
【BLACKWALD】: そうだね、RHAPSODY OF FIRE と比較されるのはこれが初めてではないよ。そのことは完全に理解しているし、むしろ嬉しくさえ思っているよ。ただそれはファーストアルバムについてならなんだけど。
このジャンルを切り開いたパイオニア、RHAPSODY の初期の作品から僕たちが影響を受けていることは明らかで否定のしようがないね。彼らの作品を心から何年間も楽しんで来たんだからね。でも、そうした比較が、最新作 “Heroes of Mighty Magic” によって徐々に洗い流され消えることを望むよ。ファーストアルバムとは若干異なるサウンドに向かうことが、僕たちの意図であり進化だったんだ。つまり、映画的な音色と、冒険的なサウンドスケープのより複雑な融合を試み、そして同時にバロック音楽、クラッシックからの影響を減らすことを目指したんだよ。僕たちは、未だ経験したことのない音楽の風景を探す旅に出たんだよ。
尊敬する SABATON のメンバーたちとは、本当に長い間親友と言える間柄なんだ。星空の下、何度もキャンプファイヤーを囲んで過ごしたし、長年にも渡り、何度も様々な状況で隣で戦ってきた戦友でもあるね。彼らを兄弟と呼べることを誇りに思うし、彼らの素晴らしい業績と貴重な友情にはいくら賞賛しても足りないくらいさ。
Q8: OK, so we really love your fantastic costumes and dramatic live performance. What comes next? Do you talk about the costume in the band very closely?
【BLACKWALD】: Our personae are not an idea as much as the genuine embodiment of the six heroes that constitutes Twilight Force. The stories and legends surrounding Twilight Force will undoubtedly make the garments somewhat self-explanatory. However, the visual aspects of these are indeed ever-changing. So depending on the quest at hand, as well as on natural circumstances like the weather and the wind; our attires, equipment and items will naturally change with the ebb and flow of time. There is no telling what the future might hold, but our performances as well as visual elements are constantly evolving, and there will certainly be many surprises to come.
Q8: あなたたちの出で立ちやライブパフォーマンスは、日本でも注目を集めています。こういったコンセプトは、バンド内で話し合ったりされるのでしょうか？
【BLACKWALD】: 僕たちの姿は、決して僕たちが考えたものではなく、TWILIGHT FORCE を構成する6人のヒーローたちの真の姿なんだよ。TWILIGHT FORCE を取り巻くストーリーや伝説によって、自ずとその服装の意味はいくらかは明らかになるだろうね。だけど、僕たちのビジュアルは常に変化し続けているよ。クエストや、天候や風といった自然の状況にもよるんだけど、僕たちの服装や装備品は時の満ち干きによって自然と変化するんだ。
これから将来的にどう変わるかは分からないけど、僕たちのパフォーマンスとビジュアルは常に進化しているんだ。間違いなく、まだまだたくさんのサプライズがあると思うよ。
