DISC REVIEW “THE SIRENS”
遺灰の散華は忘却という名の埋葬。しかしカナダのプログメタルミソロジー INTO ETERNITY は、10年の嗜眠から覚め神話の伝承を続開します。
00年代のプログメタルシーンにおいて、メロディーの乱舞、ハイテクニックの応酬にデス/スラッシュの凶暴やブラックメタルの陰鬱を投影した複雑怪奇なメビウスの輪、INTO ETERNITY の投げかけたハイブリッドのイデオロギーは、現代の多様なモダンプログレッシブへと繋がるゲートウェイだったのかも知れませんね。
特に、目眩く豊富なアイデアをシアトリカルに綴る “The Scattering of Ashes” の眩いばかりの完成度は、カタログの中でも群を抜いていました。
ところが、インタビューにもあるように、活動のスピードを落とさざるを得なくなった10年代初頭からバンドの歯車は狂い始めました。何より、七色ならぬ六人の声と顔を使い分ける傑出したシンガー Stu Block を ICED EARTH に引き抜かれたのはバンドにとって大きな痛手だったと言えるでしょう。
しかし、永遠を司る不死鳥は灰の中から蘇ります。「実は僕たちは何人か男性ボーカルをオーディションしたんだけど、最終的に Amanda のルックスと声が最も適していると判断したんだ。彼女は Stu が出していた全てのハイトーンをカバー出来るし、同時に僕等が必要としているデスボイス、グロウルもこなす事が出来るね。」と Tim が語る通り、新たに女性ボーカル Amanda Kiernanをフロントに据えたバンドは、新作 “The Sirens” で再びそのシグニチャーサウンドを地上に響かせることとなったのです。
幕開けは静謐なるピアノのイントロダクション。厳かに奏でられるモチーフは本編へと受け継がれ、決定的にネオクラシカルな響きをタイトルトラック “The Sirens” へ、ひいてはアルバム全編へともたらします。
マスターマインド Tim Roth の煌きは10年を経ても決して色褪せることはありません。ただし、かつて “エクストリームプログレッシブメタル” と称されたハイブリッドの比率は少々変化を遂げています。
確かに以前と比べて長尺の楽曲が増えた一方で、急転直下の場面展開、変拍子を伴うリズムのダンスはより自然体で作品の中へと溶け込んでいます。
もちろん、RACER X や CACOPHONY を思わせるスリリングなギターハーモニー、プログレッシブなデザイン、血湧き肉躍るクリエイティブなコンポジションは健在ですが、10年前と比較してよりパワーメタルへと接近したベクトルは 「”The Sirens” こそ、僕たちのレコードの中で最もヘヴィーメタルのファンにアピールする作品だと思っているよ。」 と語る Tim の言葉を強く裏付けます。
“Fringes Of Psychosis” はその新生 INTO ETERNITY を象徴する楽曲かも知れませんね。リッチなアコースティックギターから Michael Romeo にも迫るネオクラシカルの津波まで封じ込めた Tim のギターワーク、珠玉のメロディーと邪悪なグロウルを行き来する Amanda のウイッチリーなボーカル、エクストリームでブラストのハイテンションまで組み込んだリズム隊の妙。
静と動のダイナミズムに、リリカルで雄々しきドラマティシズム。即効性を持ってメタルアーミーの耳に馴染む、バンドのメタモルフォーゼは Stu が加入した ICED EARTH や “Jugulator” 期の JUDAS PRIEST にも並び得る鋭き牙とエナジーに満ちています。
惜しむらくは、若干チープなサウンドプロダクションでしょうか。インディペンデントでのリリースとなったため致し方ない部分とも言えますが、次作ではよりビッグなプロダクション、充実の制作環境に身を置けることを願います。
今回弊誌では Tim Roth にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。「”The Sirens” を書いている時に、テレビで、確か CNN だったと思うんだけど速報が入ったんだ。そうして、福島の災害が起きた後は、連日のようにニュースとなっていたね。僕はただとても感化されて、僕たちの素晴らしい日本のファンのために捧げる楽曲を書いたんだよ。」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH TIM ROTH
Q1: This is our first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about you and band itself? What kind of music did you listen to, when you were growing up?
【TIM】: Thank you for the interview! We love Japan so much, so it’s an honor for us to be able to speak to you. My name is Tim Roth, I live in Canada and I formed Into Eternity in the Summer of 1996. The original idea was to play Hybrid Metal, which combines the best elements of heavy metal. We employ death vocals, clean vocal, shredding guitar, melodic playing, acoustic pieces, instrumental interludes, fast playing and explosive double bass drumming.
When I was growing up I started off on AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Motley Crue and Ozzy. Basically I was into classic metal, but after I heard Metallica,Testament and Megadeth, I was hooked on thrash metal. After that, I graduated to Yngwie Malmsteen, Death and Dream Theater and from there, our current sound for the band was found.
Q1: 本誌初登場です。まずはあなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話していただけますか？
【TIM】: まずはインタビューをありがとう！僕たちは日本が大好きだから、君と話す事が出来て僕たちは誇らしいよ。僕は Tim Roth。カナダに住んでいて、1996年に INTO ETERNITY を結成したんだ。
バンドのオリジナルアイデアはハイブリッドメタルをプレイすることだったね。メタルに存在する様々な最高の要素、つまりデス/クリーンボーカル、ギターシュレッド、メロディックなパート、アコースティックなピース、インストのインタルード、ファストで爆発的なツーバスのドラミングなんかを融合させるようなね。
メタルは AC/DC, TWISTED SISTER, JUDAS PRIEST, MEGADETH, METALLICA, MOTLEY CRUE, Ozzy から聴き始めたんだ。基本的に僕はクラッシックメタルにハマっていたんだけど、METALLICA, TESTAMENT, MEGADETH を知った後はスラッシュメタルにのめり込んでいったね。
そこから、Yngwie Malmsteen, DEATH, DREAM THEATER といった次の段階へ進み、現在の僕たちのバンドサウンドを発見したんだ。
Q2: What inspired you to start playing guitar? Who was your musical hero at that time?
【TIM】: My original inspiration came from Angus Young of AC/DC, but that quickly shifted to learning Metallica songs and the riffing of James Hetfield/Dave Mustaine. Later on I got into lead playing, so Kirk Hammett was my influence and that led to discovering Yngwie Malmsteen. From that point on, I was hooked on the tight rhythm playing of thrash metal, but I wanted to have the lead chops of a Randy Rhoads or Yngwie Malmsteen.
Q2: あなたがギターを始めたきっかけ、当時のヒーローについて教えて下さい。
【TIM】: 最初にギターを始めたのは、AC/DC の Angus Young の影響が大きいね。だけどすぐに James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine が生み出した METALLICA の楽曲やリフを学ぶことへとシフトしていったんだ。
後にリードをプレイするようになり、Kirk Hammett から影響を受け、そうして Yngwie Malmsteen を発見したんだ。
だからその時点から僕は、スラッシュメタルのタイトなリフに夢中でありながら、Randy Rhoads, Yngwie のようなリードをプレイしたいと思って来たのさ。
Q3: So, ten years have passed since you had released “The Incurable Tragedy”. Off course, “The Sirens” was worth waited for, and there were some single releases, but what was the reason of this long interval?
【TIM】: Yes it has been 10 years since The Incurable Tragedy, but yes we did release early versions of Sandstorm and Fukushima back in 2011/2012. There are many reasons for the delay of The Sirens which include deaths, marriages, life issues and even divorces which took plenty of our time and attention. These days, I’m happy to report that things are going great for us as a band and also great for us as individuals.
Q3: 前作 “The Incurable Tragedy” のリリースから10年が経ちました。もちろん、その間にシングルのリリースはありましたが、非常に長い時間が経過しましたね？
【TIM】: そうだね、確かに “The Incurable Tragedy” から10年の月日が経過したね。ただ、君が言うように2011/12年には “Sandstorm” の初期バージョンと “Fukushima” をリリースしたよね。
“The Sirens” のリリースが遅れたのには多くの理由があるんだ。親しい人たちの逝去、結婚、人生の問題、それに離婚といった事柄が僕たちの時間と労力を大きく奪っていったんだ。
ただ、最近の僕たちは、バンドとしても個人としても、非常に良い方向へと進んでいると報告出来るね。
Q4: Regarding single release, “Fukushima” means a lot to us, Japan. What made you write about Japanese Tsunami, Nuclear disaster, and Japanese people at that time?
【TIM】: Into Eternity toured in Japan in 2008, for the Extreme The Dojo 20. That was a dream come true to perform in Japan. We toured with Mayhem, Dillinger Escape Plan, At The Gates and Pig Destroyer. In 2009 we got asked back to Japan again! That time we toured with Destruction and Cephalic Carnage and the gigs went absolutely incredible. We even had some time to sight see and see a bit of Japan as well. It was a great time in my life that I will never forget.
As I was writing The Sirens, my TV would have the news channel CNN on just in the background. After the Fukushima disaster happened, it was on the news everyday and I was just so inspired to write a song dedicated to our wonderful Japanese fans.
Q4: お話にも出ましたが、”Fukushima” は当時日本で起こった津波、原発事故、そしてそれに対処する日本人について書かれた楽曲でしたね？
【TIM】: INTO ETERNITY が初めて日本をツアーしたのが 2008年だったね。”Extreme The Dojo 20″ だったよ。日本でプレイ出来て本当に夢が叶ったと思ったね。MAYHEM, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, AT THE GATES, PIG DESTROYER とプレイしたんだ。
そして翌年、2009年にもまた日本へ来てくれないかと打診されたんだよ！その時は DESTRUCTION, CEPHALIC CARNAGE とプレイし、驚異的なギグになったんだ。観光も出来て、日本について少しは理解出来た気がしたよ。僕の人生の中で素晴らしい瞬間だったし、決して忘れることはないだろうね。

Q5: In this interval, Stu Block left the band and joined Iced Earth. Also, remaining long time member is only Tim and Troy. What was the story behind the situation?
【TIM】: Yes that is correct. Stu left in 2011, but he did a great job on The Sirens guest appearing on Fukushima and also on Sandstorm. In 2009, after we got home from Japan, the band had to slow down our touring schedule due to the birth of my son Lucca. Stu got the offer to join up with Iced Earth and it’s worked out just perfect for him. He is a perfect fit for that band. We are all still huge Iced Earth fans, so it was so cool he got into their band. I formed the band back in 1996 and Troy has been in the band since 2004, so the core of Into Eternity is still there. It’s been business as usual and we are just so happy to finally have The Sirens released.
Q5: この10年の間に、バンドの看板シンガーだった Stu Block が脱退し、ICED EARTH に加入しましたね？
同時に、長年在籍するメンバーはあなたと Troy のみになりました。
【TIM】: うん、その通りだよ。Stu は2011年にバンドを離れたんだけど、”The Sirens” でも “Fukushima”, “Sandstorm” にゲスト参加して素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたね。
2009年、日本から家に帰った後、僕の息子 Lucca が産まれてバンドはツアーのスケジュールを緩めなければならなくなったんだ。そのタイミングで Stu は ICED EARTH から加入のオファーを受けたから、彼にとっては全てがパーフェクトだったんだよ。あのバンドに完璧にフィットしているしね。何より、僕たち全員が大の ICED EARTH ファンだったから、彼が加入したのは本当にクールな出来事だったね。
僕がバンドを結成したのが1996年。そして Troy は2004年からバンドに在籍しているね。だから INTO ETERNITY の核となる部分はしっかりと存在し続けているのさ。
まあメンバーチェンジはこの業界では良くあることだし、とにかく遂に “The Sirens” をリリース出来たんだから満足だよ。
Q6: Recently, female fronted metal band is really increasing. And it seems Amanda fits the band perfectly, right?
【TIM】: Amanda is such a great girl and yes she fits in perfectly with us. She did such an incredible job on this new record. The band did audition men, but in the end Amanda had the right look and the right voice for us. She can hit all of Stu’s high notes but also do the death growls that we need. Her voice is very versatile from all of the harmonies and clean parts to all the raspy and death voices she can perform. Yes it is a perfect fit!
Q6: 近年、メタルシーンでは女性をフロントに据えたバンドが増えて来ています。そして INTO ETERNITY も Amanda の加入でフィーメールフロンテッドの形態になりましたね？素晴らしくフィットしていると思います。
【TIM】: Amanda は本当に素敵な女性で、君が言うようにバンドに完璧にフィットしているね。”The Sirens” では驚異的な働きをしてくれたよ。
実は僕たちは何人か男性ボーカルをオーディションしたんだけど、最終的に Amanda のルックスと声が最も適していると判断したんだ。彼女は Stu が出していた全てのハイトーンをカバー出来るし、同時に僕等が必要としているデスボイス、グロウルもこなす事が出来るね。
つまり、彼女の声はとても幅広いんだよ。全てのクリーンパート、ハーモニーから、ノイジーなデスボイスまで全てを演じられるんだ。だからまさに完璧な人材だったね！
Q7: Musically, how have you been evolved in this interval? As musician, as guitar player, do you think you are more matured?
【TIM】: The other day I was on Spotify and a track from our first record came on. I was thinking about how much we have matured over the years. This new record could be one of our finer moments and I think we have matured musically over the years. This album is full of melodic playing but also plenty of progressive and death metal moments. I think there is something on The Sirens for most heavy metal fans. I still practice everyday and I still love guitar now more so than ever.
Q7: では、この10年で、音楽家としてどのように進化を遂げ、それを作品へと反映したのでしょうか？
【TIM】: つい先日、Spotify を使っていたんだけど、たまたま僕たちのデビュー作の楽曲が流れて来たんだ。その曲を聴いていると、僕等がそれからの年月でいかに成熟を遂げたか分かったね。実際、この新作は僕たちにとって最良の時に成り得るし、このインターバルで僕たちは音楽的に実に成熟を遂げて来たんだ。
“The Sirens” はメロディックなプレイに満ちているけど、同時にプログレッシブな瞬間やデスメタルの瞬間も多く用意されているね。だから “The Sirens” こそ、僕たちのレコードの中で最もヘヴィーメタルのファンにアピールする作品だと思っているよ。
だって僕は今でも毎日ギターの練習を欠かさないし、これまで以上にギターを愛しているんだから。
Q8: Prog metal subdivide more and more in this decade. Djent and more atmospheric stuff is kind of a symbol of that. What’s your perspective about the scene now?
【TIM】: The scene keeps getting stronger and there are just so many incredible heavy metal bands these days. I think the scene is healthier than ever before. We always just play the style that we enjoy, our Into Eternity style that is all of our own. The scene will change around us and we just continue playing the music that we love to play, Progressive, Melodic and Death Metal.
Q8: INTO ETERNITY は主にプログメタルに分類されていると思いますが、そのシーンもこの10年で大きな変化を遂げていますね？
【TIM】: シーンは日増しに力強さを増しているよ。実際、近年はただただ驚異的なメタルバンドが沢山登場しているしね。つまり、シーンはこれまでよりもヘルシー、健康的になっていると思うんだ。
僕たちはいつだって、ただ自分たちの楽しめるスタイルでプレイするだけだよ。この INTO ETERNITY スタイルはまさに僕たち独自のものだからね。だから僕等を取り巻くシーンの状況が変わっても、僕たちはただ愛する音楽をプレイするだけさ。プログレッシブ、メロディック、デスメタルをね。
