ロングアイランド出身の MOON TOOTH による目まぐるしきサード・アルバムは、過去25年間にオルタナティブ・ロックが果たしてきた奇妙で先進的な音楽の扇動に対する解答のように感じられるかもしれません。
ALICE IN CHAINS や SOUNDGARDEN にはじまり、DEFTONES の絹のような感情表現、QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE の石器時代の鼓動、MASTODON の知的な砂漠、そして TOOL の複雑怪奇なグルーヴ。”Phototroph” には、たしかにこうした瞬間が散りばめられています。しかし、”次の METALLICA になりたい” と宣言する MOON TOOTH の特異性や野心は、彼らにとっての “始まりの地” からすでに “約束の地” へと舵を切っています。
「チャック・ベリーから MOON TOOTH まで、ロックのひとつのラインをたどれるようにしたいというのが本音なんだ。他のバンドが今何をやっているかなんて、どうでもいい。僕の頭の中と心の中では、真のロックンロール・バンドでありたいんだよ」
MOON TOOTH が次の METALLICA となるために必要だったのは、”ユニーク” を超えること。METALLICA のように、他の誰もやっていないことをやること。そのために彼らは、メタル以前の音楽をもモダン・メタルで再調理して、アルバムの中でロックの歴史を一つにつなげる荒唐無稽を実現しました。
ここには、オーティス・レディングの躍動も、ヘンドリクスのリフ革命も、QUEEN のハーモニーも、クリムゾンの難解なパズルでさえ存在し、再び命を得ています。
「ギターソロを早送りで聴く？ハァ？15秒～30秒のギターソロを聴くことができないほど忙しいの? ソロを早送りするのに、なぜバンドを聴いているんだ？！？！失礼ながら、君が言うような人たちは、おそらくギターソロそのものを聴くよりも、ギターソロに反応する人の YouTube ビデオを見る方が好きなんだろうな。冗談じゃないよ！」
重要なのは、この作品にロックの不純物がひとかけらも混入してはいないことです。あの RIOT V にも所属する Nick Lee の左腕にはスリルとエモーション、それにかつて誰もがギターに期待していたスペクタクルが存分に宿っていますし、自然保護施設でも働く John Carbone の表現力、感情を高めた歌声には人知を超えた野獣が降臨。ロックの王道が忘れ去られた世界で、ロックの王道を一人、むき出しの感情、むき出しのサウンドで歩んでいます。
さらに、タイトル・トラック “Phototroph” を聴けば、RUSH を思わせる千変万化なコンポジションに、FOO FIGHTERS もたじろぐほどのアリーナ・サイズのフックを刻み込んでいることが伝わるはず。”Nymphaeaceae” では、歪んだリフの曲がりくねった迷路に THE ALLMAN BROTHERS の遺志を込め、その奥深くにボーカル・フックを丁寧に埋め込んでいます。MOON TOOTH は実験とポップのシーソーを誰よりも巧みに乗りこなすのです。
「30のアイデアのうち、この11曲がとてもうまくまとまったんだ。楽観的で希望に満ちた感じがするから。今の時代の不安やフラストレーションを、怒りや実存主義に置き換えるのではなく、そこから解放されるようなものを世に送り出したいという思いがあったんだ」
パンデミック、戦争、政治の腐敗、独裁者の台頭。混乱と混沌の20年代においても、MOON TOOTH は人間の強さを信じています。”Phototroph” “光栄養生物” と訳されるアルバム・タイトルには、希望という光に向かって進んでいく私たちの姿が重ねられています。
たしかに今、誰にとっても、”聖域” は消え去りました。しかし逆に今こそ、Nick の言葉を借りれば、これまで自覚することのなかった、目を背けていた私たち自身の “不寛容” と向かい合うチャンスなのかもしれませんね。”Phototroph” はそんな私たちの “光合成” を促すような作品ではないでしょうか。
2012年に結成された MOON TOOTH は、初期にタグ付けされたプログ・メタルというタグをいまでは取り払ったように見えます。それは彼らの音楽が十分にプログレッシブでもなく、十分にメタルでもなかったからではなく、その二つ以上のものを兼ね備えていたから。今回弊誌では、Nick Lee にインタビューを行うことができました。「人間は時に、ポジティブなことに集中したり、目標を設定してそこに向かって進んだりすることを、自分で選択しなければならないことがある。それを伝えたかったんだ」 三度目の登場。スケール感が倍増しています。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH NICK LEE
Q1: We first interviewed you in 2016 and this is our third interview. Thank you! First of all, Moon Tooth’s latest release “Phototroph” has been very well received, and I’m very happy that Moon Tooth is becoming as popular as your other band Riot V! Are you feeling the response too?
【NICK】: No problem! Thanks for the support. I have definitely been very flattered and grateful by the reaction to the new album so far. ’Phototroph’ has been in the oven for a long while now so I’m super relieved that it’s out and people are digging in and seemingly really enjoying it. .
Q1: あなたに最初にインタビューしたのは2016年で、今回が3回目ですね。ありがとうございます！MOON TOOTH の最新作 “Phototroph” は非常に評判が良く、あなたが参加している RIOT V の人気にも肩を並べてきましたね？うれしいですよ！
【NICK】: いやいや、大丈夫だよ！応援ありがとうね！うん、僕はこの新しいアルバムに対する反響をとても光栄に思い、感謝しているんだ。
“Phototroph” は長い間オーブンに入れられてたから、遂にリリースされて、みんなが楽しんでくれているようで、すごくホッとしているよ。
Q2: After our last interview (2018) we were confronted with pandemics, BLM, and the abominable war. How did you live and see the world in those years that completely changed the world?
【NICK】: It’s been an eye-opening few years… Everyone in this band fully stands behind the BLM movement. We have written songs about police brutality and solidarity between humans of all backgrounds and walks of life and will always continue to do so. The most disturbing thing about the past few years is the light shined on how little people respect each other’s basic human rights and safety. A lot of people were living in a bubble and not forced to see that about themselves. I think it’s good that bubble has started to burst. Hopefully we come out on the other end of this decade more enlightened, empathetic, and caring.
The pandemic certainly affected my mental health at times but it forced me to write, to focus on my home life, and try to learn who I am again without constantly playing live.
Regardless, I don’t have to be fearful of being unjustly murdered in the street for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and I’m not being handed a gun and forced to fight for my country and family and home so I remain grateful for what I have in this life.
Q2: 前回のインタビュー(2018年) のあと、パンデミック、BLM、戦争など様々な出来事が起こりましたね。あなたはこの世界の大きな変化をどう見て、生きていましたか？
【NICK】: 目を見張るような数年だったね…。このバンドは全員が BLM 運動を全面的に支持しているんだ。僕たちは、警察の残虐行為や、あらゆるバックグラウンドを持つ人たちの連帯、人生の歩みについて曲を書いてきたし、これからもずっとそうしていくつもりだ。
この数年間で世界に最も動揺を与えたのは、人々が互いの基本的人権と安全をいかに尊重していないかに光が当てられたことだと思う。それまでは、多くの人が “バブル” の中で生きていて、自分自身の不寛容な姿を見ることがなかったからね。そのバブルが崩壊し始めたのは良いことだと思う。20年代の10年間で、僕たちがより啓発され、共感し、思いやりのある生活を送れるようになることを願っているよ。
パンデミックは、たしかに僕の精神状態に影響を与えたこともあったけど、またそのおかげで、僕は音楽を書き、家庭生活に集中し、常にライブをすることなく、もう一度自分というものを学ぶことを余儀なくされたとも言えるんだ。
パンデミックは大変だったけど、とはいえ、間違った時に間違った場所にいたために不当に殺される恐怖に怯える必要はないし、銃を渡されて国や家族、家のために戦うことを強いられることもない。恵まれているよ。僕はこの人生で得たものに感謝し続けているよ。
Q3: The reason I ask is because, of course, there are darker aspects, but I feel that the “Phototroph” album has a very positive vibe in this dark and divided world. In particular, the title track at the end is a powerful anthem filled with hope. Did you have a desire to make a positive album in such a world?
【NICK】: Actually, yes. At some point in the writing process we started to string the songs together that we thought made a cohesive album. Out of 30 ideas, these 11 just fit really well together. They have an optimistic and hopeful feeling to them. I liked the idea of putting something out in the world that might give people some release from their anxiety and frustration right now instead of just mirroring it with more anger and existentialism.
Q3: 今の質問をしたのは、”Phototroph” が、もちろんダークな側面はあるにせよ、この暗く分断された世界で非常にポジティブなヴァイブを纏っていると感じたからなんです。
特に、クローサーのタイトル・トラックは、希望に満ちたアンセムとなっています。こうした世界だからこそ、ポジティブな作品を作りたいという気持ちはあったのですか？
【NICK】: 実は、そうなんだ。曲作りのある時点で、まとまったアルバムになりそうな曲を並べ始めたんだよ。30のアイデアのうち、この11曲がとてもうまくまとまったんだ。楽観的で希望に満ちた感じがするから。

Q4: I also love the artwork of the album, the contrast between dark and light, is this a reflection of the content of “Phototroph”? What is the meaning of “Phototroph”?
【NICK】: A phototrophic organism grows towards the light. That metaphor carries over to the amazing artwork painted by Caroline Harrison, the flow of the album, the life of the band, and all of our personal lives. Humans sometimes have to make that choice for ourselves to put our focus on something positive or to set a goal for ourselves and reach for it.
Q4: 闇から光が伸びていくようなアートワークも素敵ですね。このアート自体、”Phototroph” の内容を反映しているのでしょうか？
【NICK】: “Phototroph” “光栄養生物” は光に向かって成長する。この比喩は、Caroline Harrison が描いた素晴らしいアートワーク、アルバムの流れ、バンドの人生、そして私たちの個人的な人生のすべてに受け継がれているんだ。
人間は時に、ポジティブなことに集中したり、目標を設定してそこに向かって進んだりすることを、自分で選択しなければならないことがある。それを伝えたかったんだ。
Q5: I feel like Moon Tooth’s focus is perfectly defined on this album: R&B and soul like Otis Redding, plus classic rock like Queen and Led Zeppelin, and prog like King Crimson. You’ve taken music that predates the birth of metal and re-cooked it beautifully in the realm of modern metal, haven’t you?
【NICK】: Thanks for noticing! We are trying anyway. I really want you to be able to trace one line from Chuck Berry all the way to Moon Tooth. I don’t give a shit about what other bands are doing right now. I want to be what in my head and heart is a true rock and roll band. Real amps, real performance, no backing tracks, no training wheels. If you come see us you are going to get a warts-and-all, true, dirty rock and roll show. We are trying to do something new while honoring our heroes and what they had to do to make it happen. What Would Lemmy Do?
Q5: このアルバムで、MOON TOOTH の焦点が完璧に定まった気がしますよ。
Otis Redding のようなソウルや R&B、LED ZEPPELIN や QUEEN のようなクラシック・ロック、KING CRIMSON のようなプログ。メタルが生まれる前の要素を、モダン・メタルで再調理する。そんな意図が明確に伝わってきました。
【NICK】: そこに気づいてくれてありがとう！とにかく努力はしているよ。チャック・ベリーから MOON TOOTH まで、ロックのひとつのラインをたどれるようにしたいというのが本音なんだ。
他のバンドが今何をやっているかなんて、どうでもいい。僕の頭の中と心の中では、真のロックンロール・バンドでありたいんだよ。本物のアンプ、本物の演奏で、バックトラック、補助輪はなし。僕らを観に来れば、不純物のない、真のダーティなロックンロール・ショーが観られる。

Q6: By the way, your guitar solos are amazing! Thrill and beauty coexist as if Zakk Wylde and Brian May were married. Definitely one of the pleasures of listening to this album. There is a problem in Japan today with young people listening to music on Spotify and skipping guitar solos, and Marty Friedman has a theory that it’s because there are fewer great guitar solos. What do you think about young people skipping guitar solos?
【NICK】: Zakk & Brian! Wow! What a compliment thank you, those are two heroes for sure. Fast forwarding over guitar solos? Are you really that busy that you can’t listen to a 15-30 second guitar solo? Why are you even listening to a band if you’re fast forwarding through the solos?! Maybe there aren’t as many people doing the traditional guitar solo as there once was but go check out Wes Hauch and Tosin Abasi or Billy Strings or fucking Brent Hinds! With all due respect, the people you’re describing probably would rather watch a YouTube video of someone reacting to a guitar solo than listen to the solo itself. I’m not about it! Sorry, I’m getting old and cranky.
Q6: それにしても、あなたのギターソロは素晴らしいですね！Zakk Wylde のスリルと Brian May の美が同居しているようですよ。
日本では最近、ストリーミングで音楽を聴く若者がギターソロをスキップすることが話題になっています。Marty Friedman はその一因として、良いソロが減ったことを挙げていましたが、あなたはこの問題をどう思いますか？
【NICK】: ザックとブライアン！すごい！なんて褒め言葉なんだ！ありがとう！間違いなくこの二人は僕のヒーローだよ。

Q7: What makes you guys unique is that no other band in the metal world in recent years has cared about songs as much as you do, right? Most modern and popular bands are based on screams. So, how was it working with Josh Wilber? He has worked with some of the best bands in the metal world, including LAMB OF GOD and GOJIRA, right?
【NICK】: I appreciate you saying that but I don’t think we’re alone in song-focused writing. I think because we get the “progressive metal” label all the time, people just expect it to be all tech and no soul which we have no interest in with regards to this band.
Josh Wilbur approached us through Lamb of God’s Mark Morton who worked on our previous record ‘Crux’ with us. His resume speaks for itself! It was a no-brainer and we got a long fantastically.
Q7: 特に、モダン・メタルの世界ではスクリームが基本となっていて、あなたたちのような本物の “歌” を軸としているバンドはほとんどいませんよね。だから素晴らしいのですが。
今回は、そのモダン・メタル世界最高のバンド、LAMB OF GOD や GOJIRA を手がけた Josh Wilber がレコーディングを担当しました。
【NICK】: そう言ってもらえるのはうれしいけど、歌に重点を置いた曲作りをしているのは僕たちだけではないと思うよ。まあ、僕たちには “プログレッシブ・メタル” というレッテルがいつも貼られているから、人々は技術ばかりで魂がこもっていない何かを期待していると思うんだけど、このバンドに関してはそこに全く興味がないんだ。
Josh Wilber は、前作 “Crux” で仕事をした LAMB OF GOD の Mark Morton を通して僕らにコンタクトを取ってきた。彼の経歴が物語っているね！考える必要はなかったし、案の定素晴らしかったよ。
Q8: Anyway, how is the RIOT V’s album coming along? Is it about time for a new album?
【NICK】: It’s getting close finally! I finished my guitar tracks right before leaving for this Moon Tooth tour. Unfortunately between pandemic restrictions, living spread out over the whole country, and not being able to tour on a new release, it was a little slow moving but it’s very close to mixing stage and there are some serious shredding bangers on there! I’m stoked on it!
Q8: 最後に、RIOT V の近況も伺っておきましょう。そろそろ新作が出ても良い頃合いではないですか？
【NICK】: うん、いよいよ近づいてきたよ！今回の MOON TOOTH のツアーに出発する直前にギターのトラックを仕上げたよ。
残念ながら、パンデミックの規制、アメリカ全土に散らばった生活、そして最新作でツアーができなかったことで、少し動きが遅くなってしまったけど、ミキシング・ステージまであと少し。最高のシュレッドも詰まっているよ！興奮してるよ！
