美貌と才能を兼ね備えた新世代ギタリスト YVETTE YOUNG 率いる COVET がデビュー EP “CURRENTS EP” をリリースします。POLYPHIA, INVALIDS といったアーティストのアートワークをも担当するなど実にマルチな才能を持った YVETTE は幼い時からクラッシックの英才教育を受けて育ちました。ピアノ、ヴァイオリンを習得した彼女のギタープレイは通常のそれとは少し異なります。ピックを使用せず、フィンガーピッキングでルート音などを鳴らしながらタッピングでメロディーを奏でるスタイル。これをロックの世界で具現化しているギタリストはほとんど見かけませんし、使用ギター７弦 STRANDBERG の特性とも相まって独特でモダンな雰囲気を漂わせています。彼女はすでにソロEP “ACOUSTIC EP” をリリースしていますが、スリーピースバンド COVET としては初の音源。今回公開する “SEA DRAGON” は WHAT’S MATH ROCK? と聞かれたら THIS IS IT! と答えたいくらいにマスロックの理想像を具現化しているのではないでしょうか？どこか懐かしく風景の見えるようなメロディーと数学的な譜割のリフやリズム。素晴らしいですね。YVETTE の弊誌独占楽曲解説とメッセージです！！

Aw we are releasing our album soon! It will be released in 3 weeks or sooner! And tour with POLYPHIA and CHON is great! We are playing our second show and most shows are sold out! When I wrote the song I was thinking about the ocean and a mysterious dragon traveling through the water, kind of like a creature from a Miyazaki movie! The entire album is about having an oceanic adventure 🙂
I would like to tell Japan that I miss being there and I am grateful for their support and fans and also that I will be going there with my band Covet very soon!!

For years I’ve wished that I could have a movie camera directly linked to my brain so that some of the ideas I see in my mind’s eye could be translated into film for others to watch,” Although that is obviously an impossibility (and probably a good thing- I find many things amusing that might not be so funny to everyone else), the video for ‘Overlord’ is the next best thing for me. I came up with the idea and wrote the treatment for this video myself- to see Jorge (the director) take my concept, add his own touches, and use his technical know-how to translate my “mental script” into a suitably dark visual narrative is just an awesome, awesome experience for me. I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled “me-now/now-me” culture; just like the couple in the video, many people can’t seem to look past their own relatively small problems to see the bigger picture: the world is in serious trouble. Having a bad day at work, or a fight with your significant other, or getting a crappy haircut or table service does not in any way shape or form constitute an emergency. Sometimes things just don’t work out the way we want them to- deal with it. People who only see their own problems eventually wind up alone because no one wants to hear their crap anymore- we all know someone like that, always whining and complaining about some inconsequential setback as if it were the apocalypse. This song is for those people. Oh yeah- if you’re out and about, watching the video on your pocket hate machine (mobile phone), try not to wander into traffic. A little situational awareness goes a long way.”

DEATH METAL の帝王 MORBID ANGEL の全盛期にその”顔”として伝説を生み、音楽プロデューサーとしても活躍する ERIC RUTAN 率いるフロリダの DEATH MTL KING, HATE ETERNAL。METAL BLADE から SEASON OF MIST に移籍後初のフルアルバム “INFERNUS” を8/21にリリースします。バンドに6年間在籍したドラムの名手 JADE SIMONETTO が脱退。OCEANO のCHASON WESTMORELAND を迎えて製作された4年ぶりの新作ですが、今回公開する徹頭徹尾 DEATH MTL で直情的な “PATHOGENIC APATHY” を聴く限り心配は無用でしょう。ただ前作 “PHOENIX AMONGST THE ASHES” は時にエスニックだったりカオティックだったり、緩急のついた複雑な展開と耳を捉えるフックが満載の傑作でした。特に “THE ART OF REDEMPTION” は強烈。フュージョン的で不安を煽るようなイントロからキャッチーなソロパート、その後の破壊的で難解なリフまで全てが完璧でまさにデスメタルをアートの域まで高めていました。付け加えるならば今作にもこういった”仕掛け”のある楽曲も期待したいですね。

SYMPHONY X SET TO RELEASE THEIR 9TH ALBUM “UNDERWORLD” ON 7/21!!
プログメタル通称プログメシーンの発展に最も寄与したバンドは間違いなく DREAM THEATERです。ただ彼らとは別の確固たる方法論、ベクトルを持ったプログメシーンの重要バンドが存在します。SYMPHONY Xです。DREAM THEATER が基本的にプログロックのメタル化という手法を採っていたのに対して SYMPHONY X の出自は MICHAEL ROMEO のシュレッドを軸としたネオクラシカル。クラッシックやオペラ的な大曲をも志向してきました。へヴィーなリフの導入にも積極的で PANTERA から最近では TOOL, MESHUGGAH のような数学的なセンスも巧みに採り入れています。また忘れてはならないのがボーカルの素晴らしさ。RUSSELL ALLEN という不世出のシンガーの情熱的な歌唱が SYMPHONY X の個性を決定づけています。そんな彼らの9枚目のアルバム “UNDERWORLD” のリリースがアナウンスされました！MICHAEL からコメントが届いています。
“Musically, »Underworld« has things reminiscent of the bands previous albums but this one definitely has its own individuality, Every element added was in service of the song, so the album flows and becomes a total listening experience from start to finish. Every song is to-the-point and fine-tuned, with us paying a lot of attention to the hooks, voices, riffs, and keeping the interest and the energy high for the entire record. It is heavy and aggressive as fuck when it needs to be, yet soaring and emotional at other times. I think the balance is just right. It had to have all the elements of what we normally would do, just tweaked up a notch and really fine-tuned. You know, industry people have talked about how we’ll never see a complete album again, and that idea. I wanted to defend the reputation of the album, and really try to make »Underworld« worth listening to as a whole record. It’s what I love about great individual songs, but still an album experience. I don’t want to sound like I’m preaching, but it was a point we wanted to make. It was about the progression of the whole record. It speeds up here and then it dips down here. It all makes sense together, it all works together and it all flows together.”
“like the last couple of records, there’s a theme that carries through, without it being storytelling. We try to find something to key in on and get the juices flowing, and here the goal was to find something a little dark but with emotional content. I started looking at Dante, and Orpheus in the underworld, where he’s going to go to Hades or hell to save this girl. So there’s the theme of going to hell and back for something or someone you care about.” Heavily inspired by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, »Underworld« draws on the themes from »Divine Comedy« most notably the part on »Inferno«. As homage to Dante’s use of the number 3 and its multiples, the band utilizes this motif in its music either in a lyrical or melodic context. The first song on the album is a three syllable, three note melodic phrase, and in the verses there are three references to three songs on the bands third album, »The Divine Wings Of Tragedy«. “There’s cool shit like this all over the record,” Romeo reports.
とはいえ “UNDERWORLD” はコンセプトアルバムではないんだ。最近の二枚のレコードは物語ではないけれどアルバムを通してテーマがあったよね。今回は創造性に任せたんだけど、少しダークだけどエモーショナルな内容にたどり着いたんだ。ダンテと地獄のダンテに着目する事から始めた。少女を助けるためハーデスか地獄に向かおうとしている男の話さ。だからテーマは地獄から大事な物や人を取り返す事について。イタリアの詩人 DANTE ALIGHIERI には多大なインスピレーションをもらったよ。”UNDERWORLD” は “DIVINE COMEDY” 、とりわけ “INFERNO” のテーマを描いていているんだ。ダンテが数字の3を使用していた事のオマージュとしてそれを音楽や歌詞、メロディーに込めているよ。アルバムの最初の曲には3つの音節、3つのメロディックフレーズがあり、そしてヴァースは3rd アルバム “THE DIVINE WINGS OF TRAGEDY” からの３曲に関連づけているんだ。
以前弊誌で取り上げ大反響を得た US 産モダンプログバンド NATIVE CONSTRUCT。そのデビューアルバム “QUIET WORLD” が遂にリリースされました。先行曲 “MUTE” が名曲過ぎた為、他の楽曲がどうなのか危惧していましたがそれは全くの杞憂でした。デビュー作とは思えない程に洗練されていて同時に新鮮。地球上のあらゆる音楽を詰め込んだのではと思える程にエクレクティックで実験的なのにキャッチーで耳を捉えて離しません。壮大なコンセプトアルバムはバークリー出身者としての音楽的高みを見せつけた内容に仕上がっています。その繊細で幾重にも折り重なるコーラスワークは QUEEN, ひいては以前インタビューを行った A.C.T. を想起させる部分もありますね。METAL BLADE というビッグディティールを獲得したこともあり US でのチャートアクションも極めて良好、内容も素晴らしく、5/20にはボートラを加えて MARQUEE/AVALON から日本盤の発売も決定とあらば直撃する他ありません。彼らの驚異的なテクニック、楽曲構成は BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME からの影響が指摘されていますが、今回のインタビューで意外な繋がりを知る事が出来ました。新世代ギターヒーロー、MYLES YANG です！！
