NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【SYREK : STORY】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH TERRY SYREK !!

“You Just Developed Something Unique Because We Lived In an Analog World. So, That’s One Thing I Really Miss About a Lot Of Guitar I Hear, Now. The Voice. The Uniqueness. Now, That’s Not To Say There Aren’t Some Really Amazing And Talented People Out There. There Are!”

DISC REVIEW “STORY”

Marco Minnemann, Bryan Beller, Mohini Dey, Lalle Larsson。

SYREK “STORY” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH TERRY SYREK

Q1: 1. Since this is our first interview, please tell us about yourself first. How did you start playing the guitar? Who were your musical heroes back then?

【TERRY】: Hi, my name is Terry and I play guitar! I always knew I wanted to do music from an early age. When I was very small, my mother used to play the radio and I would get very excited and dance around. A little later, around age 3 or 4, I started to have favorite bands and songs. Two of my favorites were Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. I remember noticing a “sound” about the songs; something that was really interesting about them. Turns out, years later, I discovered that “sound” was the guitar. Immediately, I begged my parents for guitar lessons, but we were advised (about age 7) that my hands were too small. Still, music was a huge part of my life and I couldn’t get enough to listen to. Finally, about age 13, a friend started taking lessons and it reminded me of my own dream. This time, my parents agreed and I started to learn guitar. The player that was really my first hero was Randy Rhoads. It was like magic to me, listening to his work on the first 2 Ozzy albums. Soon, I started practicing hours a day. The technical side of guitar playing started to really appeal to me and my list of guitar influences expanded to include Gary Moore, Yngwie and Paul Gilbert. Eventually, I began practicing up to 12 hours a day.

Q2: Looking at your resume, you’ve worked with some pretty impressive guitarists, like Paul Gilbert, Allan Holdsworth, John Petrucci, Zakk Wylde, Vinnie Moore, Marty Friedman, and Reb Beach, right? How did you get to know them and what kind of work have you done with them?

【TERRY】: I was lucky to begin teaching at a place called the National Guitar Workshop in Connecticut, here in the USA when I was 19. It was really the first and greatest place of its kind. It began back in the 80s and one of the things that they did differently was to have a “famous” guitar guest each week. They hired me as the metal teacher, and as the metal/ rock guests would come in, in most cases I would teach and play and hang out with them. We’ve had some amazing people and guitarists over the years, many you’ve mentioned above. I was very happy to have the opportunity to work with these guys on such a personal level. There were even times, like when Paul was there for the first time, that I dragged him over to my teaching room after our concert and we jammed for a few hours. It was really a highlight of my life at that time as he was such a big influence on my early years of playing.

Q3: You studied at Berklee and have been teaching for over 20 years, is there anything you can learn from teaching guitar? What advice would you give to young people who are just starting out on the guitar?

【TERRY】: Oh yeah, I learn something every time I teach. I mean, so many things. Learning how to reach people and help them understand a concept is something you can only do by actually teaching. I’ve seen many amazing players be put in a situation where they have to teach or show someone something and they fall apart. But I mean, all the time, my students will have a different way of looking at something and I listen. It really helps me to gain a fresh perspective. Their level of ability doesn’t matter. Wisdom comes from all sources. As for advice man, that’s a tough one. There’s a lot of advice, haha. Some of it involves the difficulties of the music business, but I never want to turn anyone away from music. And it all depends on what your goal is with learning guitar. But I can say this… guitar (and music, in general) is an absolutely amazing thing. I mean we literally pull ideas out of the air and make them come to life as sound. That is magic, to me. Always has been. Like, I think sometimes (when I write something, for example)… this thing didn’t even exist in this reality a while ago, but suddenly, here’s a song and it came from me. And the guitar is an extension of you. It’s your translation device. Your thoughts, your personality, your very being. Everything you are can be translated into sound by this thing. It’s amazing. So, love it, man. Really really love it, and nurture it. Find your joy in it, every day. Don’t worry about everyone else doing this thing and that thing on YouTube. Find your own voice.

Q4: By the way, your guitar is amazing, combining the best technique with the best emotions! There is only one guitarist who I feel is similar to you, and that is Shawn Lane, who I have always loved. Have you been influenced by his playing?

【TERRY】: Thank you so much. I’m very humbled to even be in the same sentence as Shawn. I can’t say that I have been influenced by him, directly. However, I think he is one of the most talented musicians to ever walk the earth. A quick funny story for you… Shawn came to the National Guitar Workshop, where I taught, many years back. The last night he was there, he did a concert. So, many of the teachers, myself included, went. Now, we had some really amazing guitar teachers there. I mean, names you may not know, but at the same level as anyone you can think of that is famous. Very very good guitarists. And we were all in the back row watching the show. Shawn came out and started this song, a really nice uptempo major key thing. And he just started to play the most beautiful stuff you’ve ever heard. He’s known for being unbelievably fast, of course, but man he could play such beautiful melodies. Everyone in that back row was like “Oh man, wow!” And then half-way through the song, he just started to unleash the fury, haha. The stuff was so fast, I had to have a few seconds to actually process what he played before I could say “holy crap!”. I looked to either side of me, at all the other teachers, and every single one of them had their mouths wide open in amazement, haha. It was such a cool experience. Shawn was just that good. And after he did the show, as all the students were leaving the building, he hopped on the grand piano that was on stage and started playing this unbelievable piano stuff! I think it was actually like Rachmaninoff’s 3rd concerto. I mean… like concert pianist level playing. He was just so gifted, not just as a guitarist, but as a musician. He was on another level.

Q5: By the way, “Story” is a really great album! And also, you have a really great line-up. All the members are world class performers, how did you choose them?

【TERRY】: Thank you so much. I’m really glad you liked it! Yes, the line up is amazing. These guys are the best of the best. During the writing process for the album, an overall “vibe” (or feeling) started to become apparent to me. I work like that when I do an album. I usually don’t intend it, it’s just a reflection of where I’m at, at that period in time. Could be a melancholy vibe, like the last album Machine Elves, or an angry vibe or a happy vibe or whatever. This time, the vibe was whimsical, funny, but also passionate. The songs started to shape into that. And so, the first person that came into my mind as I thought about who would play on it was Marco Minnemann. He’s one of my favorite drummers. One of the biggest reasons is because of the “vibe” that he approaches playing with. Really, it felt similar to where I was going with Story. I mean (and I told him this), anyone that shows up to a Dream Theater audition in a Cookie Monster T shirt… that’s the guy I want to play with. And in a way, that kind of sums up Story, haha. Prog rock and Cookie Monster. I had been friends with Lalle Larsson for years and had always wanted to do something together. We have another mutual friend in Nico Moulard. Nico’s worked on writing texts and lyrics for Lalle and I both on previous albums. Incidentally, he does this sort of thing for other bands (he writes all the lyrics for French progressive metal band Conscience), and helps foreign bands with their lyrics in English. Nico (who has been enormously helpful and supportive along this entire journey) said “Hey, you’re working on this new album you should talk to Lalle”, and I was like “Well, of course!”. Initially I asked Lalle to do just a solo or two, but as we worked together, I think we both discovered it was really cool, haha, so he ended up rearranging and adding all kinds of amazing things. Initially I had about 5% of the keyboards you hear on the finished album. It was more of a Rush-type guitar driven album. But I am so glad he got hold of it and added his magic to it, because it’s 1000% better for it.
As I was hunting down Marco, another thought occurred to me: I needed a bass player, of course, and it just so happened that Marco plays with Bryan Beller in the Aristocrats. I had known Bryan at Berklee, many years back, and as with Lalle, never got a chance to do anything together but I always wanted to. So, this whole thing was weird, because it just seemed like everything was supposed to happen the way it did. I honestly didn’t just randomly pick people or try to get someone with a “name” on the project. These are all 100% people that I wanted to have because they were exactly who I wanted. Mohini happened because Bryan let me know some of the songs were a little outside of what he felt totally comfortable with, and I never want to put anyone in an uncomfortable place. Between you and I, I know Bryan would have done an amazing job on them, haha, because he is an amazing player. But, I emailed Marco with the news and asked if he played with anyone else. The email immediately came back: “Fuck yes!! Mohini Dey, have you heard of her!!?” It was the only time I saw Marco use exclamation marks in an email, haha. So yeah, he hooked Mohini and I up. And she was wonderful on the tracks she played on. It was a surprise to have her, but I am so glad she could bring her artistry to Story. Florian Cristea was found, somewhat randomly, by Nico Moulard. I needed a real Gypsy violinist. I didn’t want someone that pretends to be one. So Nico helped hunt down some people by just searching online. We really got so lucky with Florian because he is an absolute virtuoso in every sense of the word. And Keith, who narrated things, came about because I love to play video games, haha. I am a long-time World of Warcraft player and one night, I was playing when I heard this character’s voice. I thought “Oh my God… that’s the voice I need as the narrator. This is it!”. He’s a pretty famous Hollywood guy, so I never imagined I could get in touch with him, but I looked him up on social media and sent an email. He said yes, thankfully. He’s so amazing and made this project all just come together. Like the icing on the cake. So, all of these people it’s all very personal and intentful to me. And like I said, it was weird, but it just seemed to all fall into place each step of the way, like it was supposed to happen.

「Fuck yes!

Q6: “Story” is a musical tale of two little creatures on a grand adventure. Why did you decide to tell this story in music?

【TERRY】: Well, as I mentioned, the music started to form first. But as the overall vibe became apparent, early on in the writing process, it was funny… out of nowhere, these two little creatures just appeared in my imagination. Now, as I said earlier, I love video games and before that, I read a lot of books. Mainly Fantasy and Sci Fi type stuff. I’m a huge Star Wars and Lord of the Rings nerd. So, I feel like I finally found a way to connect the different loves of my life in Story. I have my music, but I have all this fantasy stuff. And when these two little guys came into my imagination, in a big way, they really helped to write the rest of the album. You know, give it direction. And out of that, the story emerged. Sometimes I’d have some music and would get stuck writing. I imagined these little guys and what would happen next. Then the music would just come out of nowhere. Sometimes it would be the other way around. I’d have some music and the next part of the Story would come from that. Despite the fact it took so many years to write, once I got going, a lot of stuff just would flow naturally. More so than probably anything else I’ve done. I think because, as I mentioned, I was finally able to connect two important parts of myself. It felt whole.

Q7: The narrator of the story is the Hollywood actor Keith Szarabajka, and thanks to him, we can get into the story. When I think of guitar instrumentals with a narrator, I think of Buckethead. Did you think of his album as a reference?

【TERRY】: Yeah, Keith is amazing. He could read the phone book and it would be magic. No, I only have one earlier Buckethead album, I got years ago. I think it’s called Praxis or something. He’s amazing, of course, but I don’t know much about most of his music. I met him, years ago, at the National Guitar Workshop. He came to do a clinic. Sadly, we didn’t really get to do anything together, as they had it set up as just a guitar clinic type thing, where he played and Bootsy Collins answered questions that were directed to Buckethead, haha. It was cool. But now I’ll have to go check out some more stuff. Did he have a narrator or something, too?

Q8: Interestingly, “Story” has some djent riffs that have been trending while you haven’t made an album in a while, right? How did you feel about that movement?

【TERRY】: Well, any “djenty” influence from me comes directly from Meshuggah from like 25 years back, haha. I love them. Especially the earlier albums (DEI and Chaosphere). But then, I guess any djenty stuff you hear, in general, also comes directly from Meshuggah. They pretty much invented an entirely new way to make metal. So, yeah, as far as bands go I’ve been pretty influenced by those guys. I think the movement is cool, for the most part. There’s so much music, in general, now, I just can’t keep up with it all. I know the bands that were the sort of next generation after Meshuggah, like Animals As Leaders. And I think those guys, for example, are really cool because they went somewhere different with it. Tosin is really unique and the writing is great as well. Like anything else, I think the “djent” sound and style got really burned out. I mean, ultimately, no one does it as well as the guys that made it, Meshuggah. So, a lot of guitarists and bands I see pop up on YouTube now, I think are really great, but I don’t hear a lot of uniqueness to it. And for me, I guess my love of Meshuggah comes through the filter of the prog rock elements they have. So, i don’t really write a ton of stuff that is all “djent”, but the influence comes out from time to time for sure. It’s like any other influence for me; like Rush or King’s X or Genesis or Yes, or heck… North and South Indian classical music.

Q9: Many people say that today’s guitar heroes and insta-guitarists are not as interesting as the guitarists of the 80s and 90s, right? How do you feel about the differences between guitarists of the past and present?

【TERRY】: Well, this is tough I don’t want to sound like an old guy here, haha. I hear many brilliant guitarists coming up now. Guys that can play a lot crazier stuff than me for sure. I think the way people play now is directly related to the way they learn. In the 80s, when I was learning guitar, there was, of course, no internet. Now I really sound old, haha! But in order to learn something, you had to either have a teacher that knew how to do the stuff, or you had to figure it out by ear from an album. Most of the actual licks and songs I learned came from records and listening. We all learned like this, as rock guitarists. And when you do it that way, a lot of times, you get it maybe like 90% accurate. There are always little things you miss. Like 20 years later you realize “Holy crap, that’s actually an inverted major triad in ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and not the standard D Maj chord”, haha. But, you just sort of fill in the gaps with your own thing, just to piece it all together. And by doing that, you really start to develop your own voice. Even in the gear you use I mean, look at Van Halen and how he had all those amps and guitars tweaked with this thing and that thing. And listen to that sound! Still, nothing really comes close, in my opinion. Now, everything is a package in a box. And a lot of people use the same box. But, I hear Yngwie play one note and I know, instantly, it’s Yngwie, or the same with George Lynch, or just about any of those guys from that generation. You just developed something unique because we lived in an analog world. So, that’s one thing I really miss about a lot of guitar I hear, now. The voice. The uniqueness. Now, that’s not to say there aren’t some really amazing and talented people out there. There are!

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED TERRY’S LIFE

ALCATRAZZ “NO PAROLE FROM ROCK AND ROLL”

KING’S X “GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA”

MICHAEL HEDGES “AERIAL BOUNDARIES”

ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER “BEHIND THE GARDENS…”

MESHUGGAH “DESTROY ERASE IMPROVE”

Hmmm…This is really tough because there are albums that changed my guitar playing life and then there are albums that changed my compositional life and then, just albums that changed my life, haha. So, I’ll try and give you a mix of all of
those in 5 of them… Alcatrazz “No Parole From Rock and Roll”, King’s X “Gretchen Goes to Nebraska”, Michael Hedges “Aerial Boundaries”, Andreas Vollenweider “Behind the Gardens…”, and Meshuggah “Destroy Erase Improve”. But honestly, there are so many more.. Everything Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, The Yes Album, Selling England By the Pound from Genesis, those first 2 Ozzy albums, Shakti, old AC/DC, Chopin, Paganini… but that’s way too many already, right?! Haha.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

Jeeze… so much to say for this one. I really hope to connect with the Japanese fans because I love Japan so much and have never really had the opportunity to connect before. I really want all the people to hear Story. And I really hope everyone there does love it, because I want us all to become friends, haha. So many things that have come from that great nation I have a great appreciation for; the music, culture, history, art, anime, games, and the food, just to name a few. And it would be so amazing to come visit and see the country, someday. I don’t know what it is about rock guitarists and Japan, but there seems to be some kind of connection. Look at Marty Friedman and Paul Gilbert! Yeah, Japan.. you guys are amazing.
