カラチはパキスタンで、いやもしかすると世界で最も危険で暴力的な都市だと言われています。この国で唯一のスラッシュ・メタル・バンド TABAHI がカラチを故郷とするのは、なるほどいかにもふさわしいように思えます。加えて、TABAHI というバンド名がウルドゥー語で “Destruction”（破壊）であることも、彼らのオールドスクールなスラッシュが猛威を振るう様を象徴しています。
「”Thrash For Justice” は、スラッシュ・メタルを様々な形で正義に取り組み、提唱する手段として使うという僕たちのコミットメントなんだ。僕たちは音楽と歌詞を通して、正義を求める差し迫った社会的、政治的、文化的問題に光を当てることを目指している。故郷カラチの闘争であれ、より広い世界的な関心事であれ、僕たちは自分たちの音楽を使って正義と前向きな変化を求める声を増幅させることを信じている」
ただし、彼らが破壊したいのは、”正義” に反することだけです。パキスタンのカラチは、実に多くの困難に直面しています。暴力が蔓延り、犯罪率が高く、政治と社会不安のある都市で、社会的な不公平が当たり前のように横行しています。だからこそ、彼らは “正義” に焦がれ、”正義” を望みます。そして TABAHI が正義を貫くに最も適した音楽こそ、スラッシュ・メタル、そのエネルギーと反発力だったのです。

今回弊誌では、TABAHI にインタビューを行うことができました。

Q1: First of all, can you tell us how you got into metal in Pakistan, a country that is not so familiar with metal?
【FAIQ】: We discovered metal music in Pakistan primarily through the internet. While it’s true that metal isn’t as mainstream in the country, online platforms and communities allowed us to explore and connect with the genre. This digital exposure played a significant role in our journey into the world of metal, helping us find like-minded enthusiasts and access a wide range of metal music from around the world.
Furthermore, we’ve come to realize that global metalheads are part of an incredibly strong and supportive community. The love and support we’ve received from fellow metal enthusiasts worldwide is unparalleled, and it’s a testament to the unique camaraderie and encouragement that defines the global metal scene. You won’t find such a passionate and tight-knit network of supporters elsewhere.

Q2: What is the meaning behind the band name Tabahi?
【FAIQ】: “Tabahi,” a name derived from the Urdu word meaning “Destruction,” holds profound meaning for us as a band. It symbolizes the stark realities of our country’s political and economic landscape, acting as a constant reminder of the widespread challenges that have persisted throughout our history. In Pakistan, the metal genre remains a niche, appreciated by a limited audience for its raw energy and intensity.

Q3: On your Bandcamp, you wrote, “Tabahi is a Thrash Metal band from Karachi, Pakistan. A city known as the most violent in Pakistan, and among the world’s A city known as the most violent in Pakistan, and among the world’s most dangerous. Is this true? And that is why you guys are doing thrash metal?
【FAIQ】: The description on our Bandcamp page reflects the harsh and tumultuous environment in which we, as Tabahi, found our inspiration for thrash metal. Karachi, Pakistan, has indeed faced its share of challenges and has earned a reputation for being a city with high crime rates and social unrest. While it’s important to note that Karachi, like many cities around the world, has its complexities and diverse aspects, our choice to play thrash metal is not solely based on the city’s reputation. Instead, thrash metal serves as a platform for us to express our perspectives on the world we live in, the issues we face, and the struggles of our society. It’s a genre that allows us to channel the intensity and aggression of our surroundings into our music, serving as a form of catharsis and a means to address these pressing concerns. Thrash metal’s energetic and rebellious nature enables us to convey our message effectively, and it resonates with the challenges we and our fellow Pakistanis encounter daily. Q4: I once interviewed Faraz Anwar from Pakistan, he said “I remember one time in prime minister nawaz sharif Era some where in the nineties they banned us on national TV channels for wearing tight jeans & long hair so everyone cut their hair I didn’t, you might have seen my post on Facebook that I was looking for a house portion on rent and landlords refused me multiple times cause I’m a musician and they were religious people . youtube was also banned a couple of years ago . Few singer’s were killed in target killing. so it’s a bad political situation over here but we are doing it for the love of music .” Metal is often marginalized in Muslim countries, do you suffer from such persecution?
【FAIQ】: Both of us, Daniyal and Faiq, lead 9 to 5 lives to make ends meet because there isn’t substantial support for musicians in our country. We invest our own resources into the band, as pursuing music or making a career out of metal remains a distant dream in Pakistan due to the lack of opportunities and infrastructure.
The issue of long hair is one we’ve encountered as well, as it doesn’t align with societal norms and expectations here. We’ve had to compromise on our appearances to avoid unwanted attention. Additionally, there are extremist elements that have attempted to discourage and threaten us, but we remain resolute in our music and message.
In our previous album’s song released back in 2014, “Virgin Bomber,” we’ve made a point to address sensitive topics like suicide bombings and the misrepresentation of Islam. We emphasize that Islam is a religion of peace and love, and we shed light on how manipulative individuals can brainwash others into becoming bombers. In our latest album, “Thrash for Justice,” we continue to explore themes related to political instability and the challenges faced by our city, Karachi. Our music serves as a platform to express our perspectives and engage with important issues, despite the obstacles we may encounter.

Q5: I believe metal has the ability to bounce back from adversity and hardship, and I’m sure many listeners will gain resilience from watching your music and music videos. Your thrash has the power to bounce back as well as escape from painful reality, would you agree?
【FAIQ】: Absolutely, we wholeheartedly agree that metal music possesses the remarkable power to transcend adversity and hardship. It serves as a medium through which both musicians and listeners can find solace and resilience in the face of life’s challenges. Our thrash metal, in particular, carries the energy and intensity that allows individuals to not only confront the painful realities they might be experiencing but also to use the music as an escape from those harsh circumstances.
The raw and cathartic nature of metal music enables us to channel our emotions and frustrations into our songs, while also offering a sense of connection to our audience who may be going through similar struggles. We believe that the collective experience of metal, its passionate fan base, and the unifying power of the music have the ability to uplift and empower individuals to face adversity head-on. The title “Thrash For Justice” was actually inspired by the very essence of our music. While the nod to Metallica’s iconic album is a playful reference, the core idea behind the title is our commitment to using thrash metal as a vehicle for addressing and advocating for justice in its various forms. Through our music and lyrics, we aim to shed light on pressing social, political, and cultural issues that demand justice. Whether it’s the struggles in our hometown of Karachi or broader global concerns, we believe in using our music to amplify the call for justice and positive change.

Q7: For example, in neighboring India, Bloodywood mixed traditional Indian music with metal to great success. In fact, bands featuring their own traditional music have become popular in the metal world in recent years. Aren’t you guys interested in having Pakistani traditional music and Urdu?
【FAIQ】: Indeed, we are certainly interested in incorporating Pakistani traditional music and the Urdu language into our metal music. It’s a way for us to infuse our culture and heritage into the powerful genre of thrash metal. We believe it adds a unique dimension to our music and allows us to connect even more deeply with our roots.
In fact, our song “Lal Shahbaz Qalandar,” which is featured on “Thrash for Justice,” is a prime example of this fusion. It’s a tribute to a revered Sufi saint, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, who preached love and tolerance for people of all backgrounds. We even shot the video at his Mazar, and it’s available on YouTube for everyone to see.
We’re excited to share that we have plans to create more songs in Urdu, incorporating them with the power of thrash metal. It’s an exciting journey for us as musicians, and we look forward to continuing to explore and experiment with this fusion in our upcoming releases.

Q8: Of course, from your thrash, there is that classic Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax band energy, but at the same time, there is a new age dynamic feeling of modern metal, like Power Trip, right?
【FAIQ】: You’ve hit the nail on the head! We definitely draw inspiration from classic bands like Metallica and Anthrax, which are undeniably among the pioneers of the thrash metal genre. However, you’re also right in pointing out that we infuse a modern, dynamic element into our music, akin to bands like Power Trip. This combination allows us to bridge the gap between the old and the new, paying homage to late ’80s thrash and the teutonic thrash metal legends like Destruction, Kreator, and Sodom.
Our goal is to represent the old-school thrash that many have missed, and we pride ourselves on the fact that our music, from the riffs to the drums, captures that authentic old-school thrash essence. Nevertheless, our unique twist lies in the vocals, which are heavily inspired by the Teutonic thrash metal legends you mentioned. It’s heartwarming to hear that our music evokes memories of the ’80s and is reminiscent of bands like Exodus. We’re here to keep the thrash spirit alive while adding our own distinctive touch to the genre.

Jeff Waters’ virtuosic guitar work and the album’s technicality opened our eyes to the possibilities within thrash metal. “Alice in Hell” showcased a balance of melody and aggression that we aimed to incorporate into our own music.

This iconic album introduced us to the roots of heavy metal. Black Sabbath’s pioneering sound and Tony Iommi’s iconic riffs have influenced not only our music but also our appreciation for the genre’s history.
These albums collectively represent the foundations of our musical journey, instilling in us the spirit of thrash and a deep appreciation for the diversity and innovation within the metal genre. They continue to inspire and guide us in our own musical endeavors.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN
Our fascination with Japanese culture, including anime and video games, has been a long- standing passion and a source of inspiration for us. It’s been a dream of ours to visit Japan and immerse ourselves in the rich cultural experiences it has to offer. Anime, in particular, has played a significant role in our lives, influencing our musical journey and even our skill development as musicians. Covering songs from famous anime series has been a formative part of our musical growth.
I began my guitar journey by practicing the Naruto theme, a memorable and iconic piece that many anime enthusiasts hold dear. Additionally, I’ve delved into the theme song from Noragami Aragoto, “Kyōran Hey Kids!!,” which was a fantastic challenge to master. You might even catch some influence from Fullmetal Alchemist in our new record, as the depth and creativity of these anime themes have left an imprint on our music. Anime has been a significant source of inspiration for me as a guitarist and for our band’s artistic evolution, and we’re excited to continue weaving those influences into our music.
We yearn to bring our music to Japan, to experience the enthusiasm and energy of the Japanese metal community, and to share our love for thrash metal with an international audience. Despite the challenges associated with visa processing, we remain committed to the idea of performing live in Japan.
Our message to Japan is simple: we hold immense respect and admiration for your culture, and we hope to fulfill our dream of performing in your incredible country one day. Your support, whether it’s viewing our music videos, liking, subscribing, or leaving a comment, means the world to us. We are the sole thrash metal representatives from Pakistan, and your encouragement and support fuel our determination to continue creating and sharing our music with the world. We can’t wait for the day when we can rock out in Japan.

僕のギターの旅は、多くのアニメファンが大切にしている印象的で象徴的な曲 “NARUTO-ナルト-” のテーマを練習することから始まった。さらに、”ノラガミ Aragoto” のテーマ曲 “狂乱 Hey Kids!!” にも挑戦した。”鋼の錬金術師” からの影響も、僕の音楽に感じられるかもしれない。アニメのテーマの奥深さと創造性は、僕たちの音楽に影響を与えている。アニメは、ギタリストとしての僕にとっても、バンドの芸術的進化にとっても重要なインスピレーションの源であり、その影響を音楽に織り込み続けることに興奮しているんだ。
日本のメタル・コミュニティの熱意とエネルギーを体験し、スラッシュ・メタルへの愛を世界中の聴衆と分かち合いたい。ビザの手続きに伴う困難にもかかわらず、僕たちは日本でライブを行うというアイデアにこだわり続けているよ。
