DISC REVIEW “PATHWAY TO A NEW WORLD”
「ANGRAはミュージシャンとして、僕が辿った音楽の方向性という点で、最も影響を受けたバンドだったから。ただ一方で、ANGRA のようなサウンドを目指したことは一度もないよ。僕らの音楽に対する彼らの影響はとても強いけれど、彼らのやっていたことはユニークだったし、僕らもまた、大多数のパワー・メタル・バンドとは違うサウンドを出そうとしている。簡単なことではないが、努力しているよ」
ちょうど30年前。ANGRA の登場は二重の驚きでした。まずは、クラシックを大々的に取り入れた美しくも壮大でウルトラ・テクニカルなそのパワー・メタルに。そして、ブラジルというメタル第三世界から遣わされた天使である事実に。
時代は流れ、かつて ANGRA が証明したメタルの多様性や感染力は、今や当たり前のものとして受け入れられています。インドやアフリカ、そしてここ日本でも、世界で戦えるバンドが続々と登場しているのですから。そんなメタル世界の総復習、総決算として、再度感染源のブラジルから EIGENFLAME が登場したのはある意味宿命だったのでしょうか。
「ボサノヴァやサンバについては、絶対にないだろうね (笑)。でも、僕らのファースト・アルバムにはブラジル音楽や先住民音楽の要素が控えめに入っているし、バンドが活動し続ける限り、こうした要素はおそらく僕らの曲の一部になるだろうね」
ANGRA が後に再度世界を驚かせたのは、サンバやボサノヴァといったブラジルの代名詞に加えて、ブラジル先住民族の響きをメタルに溶け合わせた点でしょう。”Holy Land” はそこに、”Angels Cry” から引き継いだ流麗壮大なクラシックのシンフォニーまで未だ存分に残していたのですから、まさにメタル多様性の原点の一つであったにちがいありません。そうして、EIGENFLAME もその偉大な足跡を、自らのやり方で推し進めていきます。まさに EIGENFLAME。自分自身の炎。
「一番好きなアルバムは “Rebirth” と “Temple Of Shadows” だろうな。だから Andre が大好きで、”Holy Land” や “Angels Cry” のようなアルバムを愛しているにもかかわらず、バンドの時期を選ぶとしたら、Edu Falaschi がいた時期 になるだろうな」
EIGENFLAME のギタリスト Fernandes Bonifacio が、Andre Matos への敬意を表紙ながらも、Edu Falaschi 時代をフェイバリットに挙げる理由。それは彼らの音を聴けば理解できるでしょう。まさにあの傑作 “Temple of Shadows” を現代にアップデートしたかのような、ウルトラ・テクニカルでウルトラ・プログレッシブなメタル十字軍。
初期の ANGRA にあった、良い意味での “遊び” が排除された宗教画のような荘厳のモザイクは、明らかに EIGENFLAME が受け継いでいます。そうして、一片の曇りもなく天上まで歌い上げる Roberto Indio の迷いなき、揺るぎなき歌声。そこに加わる DRAGONFORCE や KAMELOT のパワー・メタル・カーニバル。ここには、我々が求めるカタルシスがすべて存在します。
「僕たちが経験したあの困難な時期にみんなが望んでいたことを表現するには、とてもいい名前だと思ったんだ。”Pathway To A New World” はコンセプト・アルバムではないけれど、ある意味、曲と曲がつながっている。宇宙、自然、スピリチュアルなエネルギーといったトピックを取り上げているんだよ。”つながる” ことがテーマなんだ。アルバムのアートは “Way Back Home” という曲に基づいている。この曲は、部族を探して放浪していた先住民の戦士が、新しい世界への道を見つける姿を描いているんだ」

INTERVIEW WITH FERNANDES BONIFACIO
Q1: First, can you tell us what kind of music you grew up listening to?
【FERNANDES】: Well, in my case, I grew up listening to old music with my uncles. I was around 10 years old. They always really liked bands like Queen, Scorpions, Dire Straits, and the sound of the guitars always caught my attention, and there I started to enter the world of rock, and a little later, I discovered metal. Here in Brazil there were also many rock bands that were well known and in a way made enthusiasm for rock grow, and I believe it was similar with the other members of the band.
Q1: まず、どんな音楽を聴いて育ったのか教えていただけますか？
【FERNANDES】: 僕の場合は、叔父さんたちと一緒に古い音楽を聴いて育ったんだ。10歳くらいだったかな。彼らはいつも QUEEN, SCORPIONS, DIRE STRAITS のようなバンドが好きで、そうしたギターのサウンドはいつも僕の心をとらえていたんだ。それに、ここブラジルにも有名なロック・バンドがたくさんあって、そうしたバンドもある意味ロックへの熱意を高めてくれたよね。これは他のメンバーも同じだと思うよ。
Q2: Why did you choose the band name Eigenflame?
【FERNANDES】: Choosing the band name wasn’t easy… At the beginning of the project we used the name “Eigenstate”,but after a while we realized that it was a complicated and difficult name to assimilate, and so we started looking for a new name, but it was difficult to reach a conclusion. Then Roberto suggested “What if we used Eigen together with another name?!” and then Fabio suggested the name Dragonflame, and a few minutes later he came with the name Eigenflame. Eigen in german means “own”,so the name means we all have our own flame,and it’s reported in the last song o the álbum,called “ Innerflame”. We all liked the name Eigenflame. It sounds a lot more power metal haha.
Q2: “Eigenflame” というバンド名を選んだのはなぜですか？
【FERNANDES】: バンド名を決めるのは簡単ではなかったよ…。プロジェクト開始当初は “Eigenstate” という名前を使っていたんだけど、しばらくして、複雑で同化しにくい名前だということに気づいて、新しい名前を探し始めたんだ。そこで Roberto が「アイゲンと別の名前を併用したらどうだろう！」と提案したんだよ。同時に Fabio が “Dragonflame” という名前を提案し、その数分後に彼が “Eigenflame” という名前を思いついたんだ。
Eigen はドイツ語で “自分自身の “という意味だから、この名前は僕たちみんなが自分自身の炎を持っているという意味なんだ。僕らはみんな、Eigenflame という名前が好きなんだよね。よりパワー・メタルに聞こえるからね (笑)。
Q3: Many people have compared you to ANGRA, the heroes of your homeland. Frankly, how do you feel about that comparison?
【FERNANDES】: In a way, we were very happy with this comparison, because Angra was in fact the band that most influenced me as a musician, in terms of the musical direction I followed, but on the other hand, at no point did we intend to try to sound like Angra. Ok, their influence on our music is very strong, but what they did was unique and we are also trying to do that, something that doesn’t sound like the vast majority of power metal bands. It’s not easy, but we’re trying.
Q3: 多くの人があなたたちを母国の英雄、ANGRAと比較しています。率直に、その比較についてどう思いますか？
【FERNANDES】: ある意味、この比較はとても嬉しかった。というのも、ANGRAはミュージシャンとして、僕が辿った音楽の方向性という点で、最も影響を受けたバンドだったから。ただ一方で、ANGRA のようなサウンドを目指したことは一度もないよ。
僕らの音楽に対する彼らの影響はとても強いけれど、彼らのやっていたことはユニークだったし、僕らもまた、大多数のパワー・メタル・バンドとは違うサウンドを出そうとしている。簡単なことではないが、努力しているよ 。
Q4: Angra has had various eras: Andre Matos, Kiko Loureiro, and now. Which period and album do you have a particular attachment to?
【FERNANDES】: My favorite albuns are Rebirth and Temple Of Shadows and despite loving Andre and loving albums like Holy Land and Angels Cry, if I had to choose a phase of the band, I prefer the phase with Edu Falaschi. I believe Jean would also say the same thing. Roberto likes the Andre Matos phase more and his favorite album is Holy Land. About Fabio, I can’t say haha he likes Angra but it was never one of his favorite bands. He is a big fan of Nightwish and Kamelot.
Q4: ANGRA には様々な時代がありました。Andre Matos, Edu Falaschi, Kiko Loureiro, そして現在。あなたはどの時代、どのアルバムの彼らに特に思い入れがありますか？
【FERNANDES】: 一番好きなアルバムは “Rebirth” と “Temple Of Shadows” だろうな。だから Andre が大好きで、”Holy Land” や “Angels Cry” のようなアルバムを愛しているにもかかわらず、バンドの時期を選ぶとしたら、Edu Falaschi がいた時期 になるだろうな。Jean も同じことを言うと思う。
Roberto は、Andre Matos のフェーズの方が好きで、一番好きなアルバムは “Holy Land” なんだよ。Fabio は ANGRA も好きなんだけど、NIGHTWISH と KAMELOT の大ファンなんだ。
Q5: What was great about Angra and Sepultura was that they presented their roots firmly by fusing traditional Brazilian music with metal. Will you guys someday incorporate bossa nova, samba, or other Amazonian music?
【FERNANDES】: Well, about Bossa Nova and Samba, definitely not haha In our first album we discreetly have some elements of brazilian music and indigenous music and these elements probably will be part of our songs as long as the band remains active.
Q5: ANGRA と SEPULTURA が素晴らしかったのは、ブラジルの伝統音楽とメタルを融合させ、自分たちのルーツをしっかりと提示したことでしょう。あなたたちも、いつかボサノヴァやサンバ、アマゾンの音楽を取り入れることはあるでしょうか？
【FERNANDES】: まあ、ボサノヴァやサンバについては、絶対にないだろうね (笑)。でも、僕らのファースト・アルバムにはブラジル音楽や先住民音楽の要素が控えめに入っているし、バンドが活動し続ける限り、こうした要素はおそらく僕らの曲の一部になるだろうね。
Q6: In the 2020’s, we have been enveloped in dark clouds of war, division, pandemics, and climate change.” Does “Pathway to a New World” express your wish to move forward from such a dark world to a better new world?
【FERNANDES】: In fact, that wasn’t the idea for the album’s name, but it would actually be a good name to represent what everyone wanted during that difficult time we were going through. Pathway To A New World is not a concept album, but in a way, the songs manage to connect with each other. We cover topics such as the universe, nature, spiritual energy. These are themes that connect. The album’s art was based on the song “Way Back Home”, which portrays an indigenous warrior who is wandering in search of his tribe, but ends up finding a way to a new world.
Q6: 2020年代、私たちは戦争、分断、パンデミック、気候変動といった暗雲に包まれているようです。” Pathway to a New World” は、そんな暗い世界からより良い、新しい世界へと前進したいという願いを表現しているのでしょうか？
【FERNANDES】: 実は、これはそもそもアルバム名のアイデアではなかったんだけど、僕たちが経験したあの困難な時期にみんなが望んでいたことを表現するには、とてもいい名前だと思ったんだ。
“Pathway To A New World” はコンセプト・アルバムではないけれど、ある意味、曲と曲がつながっている。宇宙、自然、スピリチュアルなエネルギーといったトピックを取り上げているんだよ。”つながる” ことがテーマなんだ。

Q7: For those experiencing depression and loss in such a dark world, isn’t power metal fantasy the perfect escape? Isn’t that what the world needs now more than ever?
【FERNANDES】: For sure. Power metal is a style that will always lift you up. The vast majority of the lyrics are full of messages of positivity, which encourage you to seek what you want. Sometimes you also encounter epic battles, dragons destroying castles and imagine yourself in a Lord Of The Rings movie. Okay, we love that too hahaha.
Q7: こうした暗い世界で憂鬱や喪失感を味わっている人々にとって、パワー・メタルのファンタジーは完璧な逃避場所に思えます。世界は今、かつてないほどパワー・メタルを必要としているのではないでしょうか？
【FERNANDES】: 確かにね。パワー・メタルは、常に僕たちを元気づけてくれるスタイルだよね。歌詞の大半はポジティブなメッセージに満ちていて、自分が望むものを求めるよう励ましてくれる。この音楽を聴けば、壮大な戦いやドラゴンが城を破壊するシーンに遭遇し、ロード・オブ・ザ・リングの映画の中にいる自分を想像することもある。オーケー、僕たちもそういうのが大好きだよ (笑)。
Q8: Speaking of fantasy, Japan is a mecca for fantasy, including games, animation, and music. Are you interested in such Japanese culture?
【FERNANDES】: Yes definitely!! Every Brazilian born in the 80s and 90s is in a certain way influenced by Japan because of animes and tokusatsus. I love it! Brazil has the largest Japanese colony outside of Japan. When you walk through the Liberdade neighborhood in São Paulo, it’s like a piece of Japan in Brazil. It’s amazing.
Q8: ファンタジーといえば、日本はゲーム、アニメ、音楽などファンタジーのメッカです。そんな日本文化に興味はありますか？
【FERNANDES】: うん、もちろん！80年代、90年代生まれのブラジル人はみんな、アニメや特撮を見ていて、ある意味日本に影響を受けているよ。僕は大好きだよ！ブラジルは日本以外だと、最大の日本人移民のコロニーがある。サンパウロのリベルダーデ地区を歩くと、ブラジルの中に日本があるような感じがするんだ。素晴らしいよ。
