「RIOT から “不変であること” を学んだんだ。自分の好きなことを心をこめてやれば、誰かが自分の音楽を聴いて幸せな気持ちになったり、自分のアートで人生に新鮮な風が吹いたと認めてくれるだろう。そう、自分の好きなことを変わらずやり続ければね」
かつて、パワー・メタルはヘヴィ・メタルが揶揄されるマンネリの象徴でした。”すべてが予定調和で、同じに聴こえる”。そんな中でも、RIOT は己が愛するパワー・メタルをやり続けました。好きをやり続けることで RIOT のパワー・メタルは豊かに熟成されて、フォーキーだったり、メタリックだったり、エモーショナルだったり、テクニカルだったり、Valentino Francavilla が語るように時季折々の個性を醸し出すようになりました。多くの人の人生に救いや癒しをもたらしました。そして、パワー・メタルの復権と拡散、新たな才能の礎になったのです。
「RIOT は僕のヒーローであり、インスピレーションなんだ！16歳の頃、クラシックなオールドスクール・ヘヴィメタルのコンピレーションを聴いていて、”Thundersteel” が流れてきたんだ。最初のコーラスの後、”これが真のヘヴィ・メタルというものなんだ” と雷に打たれ、この素晴らしいバンドに恋をしたのさ！」
イタリアでメタルに目覚めた Valentino Francavilla は、RIOT の “Thundersteel” を聴いて文字通り雷に打たれたような衝撃を受けました。これこそが個性的で真なるヘヴィ・メタル。いや、真なるヘヴィ・メタルは個性的だと確信した Valentino は、そうしてギター、さらには歌の研鑽に励みました。WHITE SKULL で名を上げ、胸筋と SNS で火がつき、ついにはソロ・デビュー。そして7月にはここ日本で、RIOT V との共演が決定。彼もまた、好きをやり続けた結果、まさに “Midnight Dreams” が実現するのです。
「僕は何か新しいものを発明しているわけじゃない。僕が作曲したものは、人生の季節季節で耳にしたものから影響を受けた音楽だから。でも、僕は人の個性を本当に信じているんだ。人はひとりひとりがそれぞれ個性的だ。だから僕は、良いインスピレーションと影響、愛と独自性を持って、最高の音楽を作ろうとしたんだ！」
Valentino の言葉どおり、彼の音楽は決して真新しい革命的な何かではありません。とはいえ、彼の人生の四季折々を反映した、実に個性的で芳醇なパワー・メタル。たしかに、パワー・メタルには一定のフォーミュラ、型が存在しますが、そこに注がれるのはアーティスト個性であり、”好き” の源。つまり、個性を知り、音楽の色を積み重ねたアーティストにとって、そうしたフォーミュラは創造性の妨げにはならないのです。
「僕がステージで演奏するときに最初に考えるのは、目の前にいる人たちは新鮮な空気を吸って、人生を楽しむためにここにいるんだということ。こんな困難な時代だからこそね。ヘヴィ・メタルや音楽全般は、心理的な問題に対しても、本当に多くの方法で人々を助けることができると思う」
そうして Valentino のパワー・メタルは暗い世界の灯火となります。モダンで高度なテクニックと、クラシックなメタルのメロディ、そして積み重ねてきた音楽の色は雄弁に交合わさり、憂鬱や痛みをかかえる人々にひとときの癒しを提供し、新鮮な一陣の風を心に吹き込むのです。

Q1: You are going to perform in Japan for the first time! What are you looking forward to in Japan? Do you like Japanese culture, anime, video games, or music?.
【VALENTINO】: Good morning everyone! and thank you for the interview! I’m so exited to come in Japan, since i was a child i dreamed to play there one day and have the chanse to see with my own eyes this beautifoul country.
Yes! i like Japanese anime, me and my older brother used to watching a lot on our chilhood and still in the present, i don’t think i know all of them but my favourite one’s are Evangelion and Yu yu hakusho.
I love Japanese Heavy metal bands like loudness, and x Japan; they inspired my playing a lot! riff as “sadistic desire” from x and crazy doctor, like hell, in the mirror, heavy chains from loudness, they have always made me dream and love Akira Takasaki playing.
Q1: 初来日公演が決まりましたね！日本の何を楽しみにしていますか？日本の文化、アニメ、ゲーム、音楽に興味はありますか？
【VALENTINO】: みんな、おはよう！インタビューをありがとう！子供の頃から、いつか日本でプレーして、君たちの美しい国を自分の目で見るのが夢だったんだ。
そうそう！僕は日本のアニメが好きで、兄と子供の頃からよく見ていたし、今でも見ているよ。全部を知っているわけじゃないけど、新世紀エヴァンゲリオンと幽遊白書が大好きなんだ。

Q2: You are from Italy, what kind of music did you grow up listening to? Who were your guitar heroes?
【VALENTINO】: I grew up with amazing music and i’m so grateful for it, i remember the first Hard n heavy like guns n roses, iron maiden , after i start to listening helloween, skid row, motley crue, riot, stormwitch, warlord, death, racer x, Yngwie Malmsteen, Europe, Loudness,Fabrizio de Andrè , Dokken and many more; also i love country music, classical, blues, i think that if you focus only in one music genre you will waste a lot of colors for your life and compositions creativity.
My guitar heros are: Paul Gilbert, Mark Reale, Yngwie Malmsteen, Akira Takasaki..
Q2: あなたはイタリア出身ですが、どんな音楽を聴いて育ちましたか？当時のギター・ヒーローは誰ですか？
【VALENTINO】: 素晴らしい音楽に囲まれて育ったし、そのことにとても感謝しているんだ。最初に聴いたハードでヘヴィな音楽は、GUNS N’ ROSES と IRON MAIDEN。それから、HELLOWEEN, SKID ROW, MOTLEY CRUE, RIOT, STORMWITCH, WARLORD, DEATH, RACER X, EUROPE, LOUDNESS, DOKKEN, Yngwie Malmsteen, Fabrizio de Andre みたいな人たちを聞き漁っていったんだ。
メタルだけじゃなくて、カントリー・ミュージック、クラシック、ブルースも大好きだよ。一つの音楽ジャンルにだけ集中すると、人生や作曲の創造性において多くの色を無駄にすることになると思う。
僕のギターのヒーローは Paul Gilbert, Mark Reale, Yngwie Malmsteen, 高崎晃だね。
Q3: “The Italian power metal” is Rhapsody, but your music is very different from theirs. Are there any influences from them?
【VALENTINO】: Yes I think there are because i’ve listened to Rhapsody classics lot of times and it’s the only band that i really love of this kind of power metal;
I think my style is different because as i said before i listen a lot of different musical genres and i melt classic heavy metal with all my influences.
Q3: “イタリアのパワー・メタル “といえば、まず RHAPSODY が思い浮かびますが、あなたの音楽は彼らとは大きく異なりますね？
【VALENTINO】: とはいえ、僕は RHAPSODY のクラシックを何度も聴いて育ったんだ。彼らは “この種の” パワー・メタルで本当に好きな唯一のバンドだからね。
さっきも言ったように、僕はいろいろなジャンルの音楽を聴いているし、クラシックなヘヴィ・メタルの中に影響を受けたものすべてを溶かしているから、彼らを聴いて育っているけど僕のスタイルは違うと思うんだ。
Q4: You will be performing with Riot in Japan this time! They are also your heroes, what do you like about them? Also, I like them best from the Mike DiMeo era, but which era and which work do you like best?
【VALENTINO】: I still can’t believe it! as you wrote on the question Riot are my heros, my inspiration, who kwons me well can tell this for shure!
I remember i was listening a classic old school heavy metal compilation when i was 16 yeras old and i heard Thundersteel playing , after the first chorus i thought “this is what i call heavy metal” and i fell in love with this amazing band, i started to listening the whole album and Previlege of power to, and i was electrified; After i listened all the other albums from the beginning like rock city to now!
I love Mike Di Meo era, Night Breaker is a masterwork, love song as babylon , in your eyes, Night breaker
I love all the Riot era’s and i have no favorite because i think that every period is unique and different like the seasons.
Q4: 今回、あなたは RIOT V と日本で共演します！彼らはあなたのヒーローだそうですが、彼らのどんなところが好きですか？また、私は Mike DiMeo 時代が一番好きですが、あなたはどの時代のどの作品が一番好きですか？
【VALENTINO】: そうなんだ！まだ信じられないよ！君が言うように RIOT は僕のヒーローであり、インスピレーションなんだ！
16歳の頃、クラシックなオールドスクール・ヘヴィメタルのコンピレーションを聴いていて、”Thundersteel” が流れてきたんだ。最初のコーラスの後、”これが真のヘヴィ・メタルというものなんだ” と雷に打たれ、この素晴らしいバンドに恋をしたのさ！すぐに “Thundersteel” アルバム全曲と “Previlege of Power” を聴き始め、その後、”Rock City” のような初期から現在に至る他のアルバムまですべて聴いたね！
Mike DiMeo 時代の “Night Breaker” は傑作で、”Babylon”, “In Your Eyes”, “Night Breaker”のような曲が大好きだよ。というか RIOT はすべての時代が好きだし、どの時代も季節のようにユニークで違うと思うから、特別好きな時代はないね。
Q5: I think Mark Reale and Mike Flyntz are the most underrated guitar duo out there. What did you learn from them?
【VALENTINO】: I love Mark Reale and Mike Flynz playing , they influenced me a lot and from them i learned the constancy, do what you love with the heart and if you persevere with such thing someone will be happy listening your music or recognize you as something like fresh air in his life thanks to the art .
Q5: Mark Reale と Mike Flyntz は、最も過小評価されているギター・デュオだと思います。彼らから何を学びましたか？
【VALENTINO】: 僕は Mark Reale と Mike Flyntz の演奏が大好きで、彼らから多くの影響を受けたし、彼らから “不変であること” を学んだんだ。
自分の好きなことを心をこめてやれば、誰かが自分の音楽を聴いて幸せな気持ちになったり、自分のアートで人生に新鮮な風が吹いたと認めてくれるだろう。そう、自分の好きなことを変わらずやり続ければね。
Q6: Your album “Midnight Dreams” is really great! It incorporates the old power metal goodness of like Riot, but the guitar playing and riff work is very technical and modern updated. Such a balance between the past and the future is one of your strengths, would you agree?
【VALENTINO】: Thank you very much i really appreciate it, yes i’m totally agree, i did not invented nothing new, what i compose it’s inlfuenced by what i heard im my life seasons but i really believe in uniquess of people, each one of our is unique, so what i tried to do is make the best music i could with good inspiration and influences, love and uniquess! I think the the Midnight Dreams guitar riffs are old school heavy metal with a powerfull modern sound..

Q7: You are teaming up with Nozomu Wakai for the Japan tour. How do you feel about his guitar playing and songs?
【VALENTINO】: Yeah i’m so exited to play with Nozomu Wakai, i really enjoy his playing and also i think we have a lot of common tastes in music! i’m so happy to see peolple like him still doing what their really love.
I really like “Ready For Rock“ by Nozumu, heavy guitar riffs and awesome shred soloist parts on it, also i really Enjoyed “Take Me Home” with Ronnie Romero on vocals, what a unique voice! I’m really happy to share the stage with him and shredding togheter!
Q7: 日本公演では、若井望とチームを組むようですね。彼のギター・プレイや曲についてはどう感じていますか？
【VALENTINO】: 望とプレイするのが本当に楽しみだよ。彼のプレイは本当に楽しいし、音楽の好みも共通するところが多いね！彼のような人が、本当に好きなことをやっているのを見るのはとてもうれしいよ。
望の “Ready For Rock” は、ヘヴィなギター・リフと素晴らしいシュレッドのソロパートがとても気に入っている！Ronnie Romero が歌った “Take Me Home” も最高だよね。なんてユニークな声なんだ！彼とステージを共にし、一緒にシュレッドできることを本当にうれしく思うよ！
Q8: The world has been plagued by dark shadows of pandemics, wars, division, and natural disasters. It is in these dark times that I feel that many people use power metal fantasies and exuberance as a place of escape, courage and strength… Do you feel that the demand for power metal is rising now?
【VALENTINO】: I’m totally agree with you, when i play on stage one of my first thought is that the people in front of me are here to breath fresh air and enjoy the life especially in theese hard times, i think that Heavy metal and the music in general can really help people in a lot of ways also for the psychological problems, i saw it with some of my guitar students, if they really focus on music learning and practicing sometimes theire lifes changes!
I played many times in Norway, Germany, Austria and they really enjoy heavy power metal, here in italy were i live there are so many beautiful places to see, the food is really great but it’s not the right place for power metal in this period, it was on the early 2000, as we mentioned before was the time of Rhapsody, White Skull, Domine, Labyrinth, Vision Divine.
Q8: 世界はパンデミック、戦争、分断、自然災害といった暗い影に覆われています。こうした暗い時代だからこそ、多くの人がパワー・メタルのファンタジーや高揚感を逃避の場、勇気や強さの拠り所にしているような気がしますね…今、パワー・メタルの需要が高まっていると感じますか？
【VALENTINO】: 本当にそうだよね…僕がステージで演奏するときに最初に考えるのは、目の前にいる人たちは新鮮な空気を吸って人生を楽しむためにここにいるんだということ。こんな困難な時代だからこそね。
ヘヴィ・メタルや音楽全般は、心理的な問題に対しても、本当に多くの方法で人々を助けることができると思う。僕のギターの生徒たちを見ていると、本当に音楽の勉強や練習に集中すれば、人生が変わることもあるって思うからね！
僕はノルウェー、ドイツ、オーストリアで何度も演奏してきたけど、彼らは本当にヘヴィなパワーメタルを楽しんでいた。僕が住んでいるここイタリアには、見るべき美しい場所がたくさんあるし、食べ物も本当に美味しいんだけど、残念ながら今はパワー・メタルには適していないんだ、。Rhapsody, White Skull, Domine, Labyrinth, Vision Divine が00年代初頭に活躍したにもかかわらずね。

the first Hellowen full released work; i really love the spontaneity of this album, i can feel the instict and the desire to play good Heavy/power metal, also i really enjoy the guitar riffs and the double guitars solos that are a true Helloween trademark!
Helloweenが初めてフル・リリースした作品。このアルバムののびのびした感じが本当に好きで、良いヘヴィ／パワー・メタルを演奏したいという衝動と欲求を感じることができる。ギターリフも最高で、ダブルギターのソロはHelloween のトレードマークだよね！
RIOT “Thundersteel”
as i said before when i listened this amazing album in my childhood i thought this is what i really love and it gave me the streght to dream and play my songs .
前にも言ったように、子供の頃にこの素晴らしいアルバムを聴いた時、これこそ自分が本当に好きなものだと思った。夢に向けて進む強さを与えてくれたんだ。
STORMWITCH “Stronger Than Heaven”
what an album! the rithem guitar riffs are on top, i got really influenced by stormwitch style and i really love Andy Muck vocals.
素晴らしいアルバムだ！リフが最高で、Stormwitchのスタイルに影響を受けたし、Andy Muckのボーカルが大好きだ。
RACER X “Second Heat”
i grew up with listening Paul Gilbert and i really enjoyed the racer x times, strong heavy metal with to much shred on it, so it’s perfect!
ポール・ギルバートを聴いて育ったので、この時代は本当に楽しかった！メタルとシュレッドの完璧な融合だ！
FABRIZIO DE ANDRE “Storia di un Impiegato”
he is an italian songwriter and singer, theyre songs are like poetry in music , he really gave me emotions like no other.
