One Of The Most Creative Artists In The Progressive Rock World Now, Dave Kerzner Becomes A Bridge From Retro to Modern, With His Most Ambitious Work, “Static” !!

DISC REVIEW “STATIC”

DAVE KERZNER “STATIC” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH DAVE KERZNER

Dave-Kerzner

Q1: Hi, Dave! This is the first interview with you. First of all, could you tell us about yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【DAVE】: I’ve been a musician since I was 7 years old starting off on the piano and eventually playing guitar and singing. I grew up listening to bands like Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, The Police, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and other classic and progressive rock. I had a great record collection. At age 14 my parents bought me my first synthesizer and I started my own garage band and often played with musicians 10 years older than me. I haven’t stop playing rock music since then.

GENESIS, YES, PINK FLOYD, ELP, THE POLICE, LED ZEPPELIN, THE BEATLES

Q2: You are really multi-talented musician. What inspired you to start instruments like keyboard, drums, guitar and composition? I feel Genesis and Pink Floyd seemed to influenced you somehow, but who was your musical heroes at that time?

【DAVE】: Thank you! I always loved rock music even when I was young so I knew I wanted to be in a rock band at an early age. When I saw Tony Banks of Genesis surrounded by keyboards as well as other bands like Yes and Kansas, I decided I wanted to be a keyboardist myself with every cool keyboard they had. I also love acoustic guitar oriented music like CSNY, America, Nick Drake and others so that was my inspiration to play acoustic guitar. I’ve always liked the production of bands like Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons Project so that inspired me to want to be a producer. My musical heroes were the musicians of these and other bands. People like Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel, David Gilmour, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, John Wetton and many more.

Q3: You look so busy, because you have three musical projects, Dave Kerzner, Sound of Contact, and Mantra Vega. Also, you are CEO of Sonic Reality INC. I think Sonic Reality INC is very important company for music scene. Could you please talk about Sonic Reality?

【DAVE】: It’s true I am busy. I do have many musical projects but some projects are just an album without ongoing work. Mantra Vega was that kind of project whereas Sound of Contact is currently making a new album and that’s a lot of work to do just on the heals of releasing my latest solo album. Sonic Reality is a sound development company that has created sounds for most of the major keyboard and software instrument manufactures over the years. We also create products with some legendary musicians and producers including one called “Nick Mason Drums”, a recorded/sampled drum library that I used on the title song of my new album “Static”. For that product I recorded Nick Mason of Pink Floyd in the studio with Alan Parson. That itself was a dream come true for me to work with some of my heroes. Through Sonic Reality, and another company called IK Multimedia, I’ve had the chance to work with all sorts of artists and bands like Genesis which was another dream of mine. That led to me meeting Phil Collins’ son Simon and that turned into is forming Sound of Contact! We’ve also recorded people like Neil Peart of Rush, Billy Cobham, Terry Bozzio and many more.

Q3: Dave Kerzner, SOUND OF CONTACT, MANTRA VEGA。

Sonic Reality

Q4: Let’s talk your fantastic new record “Static”. Definitely, It’s a perfect “progressive rock opera”. The words in the artwork “Fake News Station”, “Faceboot Camp” is typically, “Static” seems to be about the chaos in everyday life, modern society. Do you agree that?

【DAVE】: Thank you. Yes that’s the theme of the concept album and each song tells a different story of how this clutter and noise interferes with our happiness and well being individually or in society today. The artwork of the album, which was a collaboration with Ed Unitsky, depicts a carnival city of a dystopian not-so-distant future. Everyone is walking around with TV set heads with static on them and holding some sort of additional distracting device such as a smart phone. All sorts of characters and images on the front and back cover relate to the songs on the album. There’s a bit of dark humor and sarcasm throughout the album and also on the cover with certain plays on words like you mentioned and more. Each song deals with a different subject or set of characters and profiles certain personalities. For example, in the song “Reckless” there is a character named “Shady” who is distracted by his need to get a thrill by risking his own life and others in an almost comical tragic way. He likes to get wasted and drive 135 miles per hour in his sports car on the opposite lane so he can “feel alive”. In the song “Millennium Man” we get another character who is the modern day “extreme narcissistic anti-hero” who manages to have fans while being a jerk putting down others and boasting about himself all the time. That too has a bit of dark humor to it as well which was inspired by my former band mate Kevin Gilbert. There’s so much to say about each song but it’s also nice for the listener to make their own interpretations of the music. But, there’s a lot of meaning and “accessible poetry” on the album blended with a wide range of dynamics and moods. I say “accessible poetry” because some progressive rock music is cryptic and so “out there” to the point where you wonder if it’s supposed to actually mean anything. My music is usually something you can relate to yet it’s still told in a creative poetic way.

Q5: Sometimes ethereal, sometimes dark, sometimes atmospheric, sometimes heavy. “Static” have very rich, deep and epic world. But on the whole, I feel “Static” is darker, heavier, and more melancholic than your previous release “New World”. Does the dark mood reflect the theme or story of “Static”?

【DAVE】: Yes that’s true it is darker and actually I had to take a few songs off the album that were more cheerful and triumphant sounding which just didn’t fit. I look at a concept album a bit like a movie. There’s a vibe, an atmosphere, a message, a story or group of stories with a common thread. I care a lot about the “album listening experience” and what it has to offer the listener as a whole as well as from individual songs. Overall, you could definitely say it’s a bit more dark, heavier and cynical than I’ve done before. But, it’s also just very honest about the state of things today which we have to admit are quite chaotic. I didn’t want to sugar coat reality too much. I want people to be honest with themselves and realize we’re all distracted and bombarded with chaos daily through either social media, television, news, politics, relationship dramas, alcohol or drugs, technology or even just the clutter of thoughts in our heads. Also, everyone tends to think they’re right these days and preaches their point of view. It’s also an uncomfortable truth that we’re all hypocrites. Even I’m a hypocrite sometimes. It’s almost unavoidable. But, being aware of these things is the first step toward shifting the balance so day to day life is more in the favor of your individual and our mutual happiness.

Q6: From nostalgic, classic rock/prog sounds to modern alternative rock edges, electronic soundscape. Musically, “Static” is wide and diverse record. Also sound wise, Static (Hi Res 24 Bit 96K Edition) is prepared. When you were in writing process, what was your perspective about the balance between nostalgia and modern?

【DAVE】: I think some of the best rock albums ever made were done in the 60s, 70s and early 80s. So, I like to keep some of the qualities I love about that music alive through my music where I balance a “vintage/retro sound” with a more modern alt rock or mainstream kind of sound. I’m actually more eclectic than that because I’ll pool from classical and film score influences as well as ambient music, folk, jazz and other styles to use as the vehicle for my stories and musical expression. To me, these styles and sounds are all ingredients I can use to cook up something new that has a balance between comfortable familiarity and something fresh you’ve never heard before in this particular way. Sometimes I sound very close to my influences, especially Pink Floyd and Genesis. But, those are just sonic flavors I like to use in new original songs that hopefully bridge listeners who love those bands to a new generation of music they can enjoy. There’s always a blend of these things so there’s never actually a song that’s too close to what any of my influences would have done on their own. That mix of recognizable and new exploratory styles and sounds combined with a new unique lyrical message is what characterizes my music for the most part.

Q7: From Pink Floyd, Genesis, to Big Big Train, Porcupine Tree, There have been few albums that such a wonderful musicians got together in the prog history. Could you tell us about the impressions of guest players?

【DAVE】: I’m very fortunate to work with some extremely talented and versatile musicians like Fernando Perdomo who is my main collaborator on both New World and Static. For my solo work, he’s the one I go to the most for guitar, bass and he even played some of the drums on Static. On Static, I also co-wrote some of the music with Fernando, Randy McStine and Derek Cintron through “improvisational band jams” we did together after one of the Cruise To The Edge shows we did. I also have the McBroom sisters, Durga and Lorelei, who sang with Pink Floyd back again on Static as they were a bit part of New World as well. I like to work with my former Thud band mate, Nick D’Virgilio, who to me is one of the best drummers in the world. Another special guest is Steve Hackett of Genesis who has played now on both of my studio solo albums. The amazing thing about Steve is that we work so well together because I’ve grown up being influenced by his music and playing. It’s a very natural fit and we both love working together. There’s a nice cross-generational collaboration I have with various musicians I look up to. I’ve dreamed of working with musicians of this caliber all my life. Now, because of a lot of hard work getting here and earning these musicians’ respect and appreciation for my art, I am able to write and produce albums that I enjoy and can be proud to release to the world.

Cruise To The Edge

Q8: So, I also love Mantra Vega’s “The Illusion’s Reckoning”. And you rejoined Sound of Contact in 2015. Is there any plan to release of these two band or another project?

【DAVE】: I collaborated with Heather Findlay as a fun experiment with the goal to make an album with her writing most of the lyrics and me writing most of the music. Since it was different than her solo work, we decided to give it a band name from the beginning and that’s Mantra Vega. But, we’ve never toured as Mantra Vega. She plays those songs with her solo band. I like the album too but I find that I can relate more to an album artistically if I’m writing a majority of the lyrics. So for that and other reasons I don’t think there will be another Mantra Vega album. We consider it a “one off” and it’s a cool novelty as such. It’s a hybrid between the “Sound of Contact keyboardist/songwriter and the ex-Mostly Autumn front woman/lyricist”.
I will be releasing more music that features the rhythm section of Mantra Vega, though, as I’ve recorded a lot with Alex Cromarty and Stuart Fletcher. They also toured with me in Europe and are featured on the “New World Live” album and concert video. The song “Chain Reaction” from my album “Static” was almost on the Mantra Vega album and features the same rhythm section. I felt that song and others that I was planning to sing lead on and wrote the lyrics for were better suited on my solo albums.
Sound of Contact has reformed with the original 4 members who made the album “Dimensionaut”. I’m heading back over to England next week to finish the lyrics with Simon Collins and hopefully record all of the vocals as well! I think we’ll be releasing a new SOC album some time in 2018. But, I’ve also already started on my next solo album and I have at least 4 Sonic Elements tribute albums I’m hoping to release next year as well!

Q8: SOUND OF CONTACT

To Japan! I have visited Tokyo before and had an amazing time there. I had sushi at the opera house downtown and a shabu shabu dinner where I ate a live snail. But, I’ve never performed live in Japan. I would love to someday!
