UK Extreme Legend, Akercocke Returns For The First Time In A Decade! “Renaissance In Extremis” Delivers Euphoric Force And Mind-boggling Weirdness !!

DISC REVIEW “RENAISSANCE IN EXTREMIS”

Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone” を頂点とするトリロジーで、美麗なる異端の響き、クリーンパートまでをも宿し唯一無二の存在と化しました。

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID GRAY

23622542_825313547648762_2326381039387398055_n

Q1: First of all, what was the reason of your breaking up in 2012? what was the mood of the band at the time?

【DAVID】: We didn’t really break up in 2012, we played our last shows as a functioning band in 2011 but things had been unusual for several years before that. Things just sort of fizzled out, there was no actual moment of absolute seperation – it seemed rather like none of us really had the energy to keep the rather neglected band alive so it just ran out of oxygen.

Q2: It was surprise that you came back with original member Paul Scanlan in 2016. Where did the idea come from?

【DAVID】: The original idea was to come back with a new guitarist but to be honest I was personally really keen to get Paul back, as was Nathaneal, who was the real key to the band getting back together at all! Jason agreed that we should really aim for a proper reunion and fortunately he managed to convince Paul to come and hang out and jam again. I was surprised and really pleased that Paul was so open to the whole idea and I think we all agree that he has bought so much to the new album that it would be ridiculous to think of anyone else playing guitar in Ak.

Q3: Anyway, “Renaissance in Extremis” is the first record in ten years for you! Definitely, it’s very long interval. When you recorded “Antichrist”, could you imagine such a long interval?

【DAVID】: No, we had already started composing songs for the next Ak album, which was scheduled for 2009 – Jasons songs all ended up on the new album and all of Matt Wilcocks songs ended up on the Antichrist Imperium album that I worked on with him. Jason and I both agreed that the ‘Antichrist’ album just didn’t seem like the end of the Ak story, so we were pleased to finally set things to rights creatively.

Q4: Regarding “Antichrist”, there was a “Controversy” on the record at that time. Actually, you played Belfast gig despite protests from Christian groups and a strong police presence at the show. Looking back now, what’s the Controversy about “Antichrist” to you?

【DAVID】: No idea, we participated in a rather dubious television programme on Irish television purely for the publicity involved for the band. The interviewer and guests on the show in Ireland didn’t really know or care about Ak and the fact that we had successfully played in Ireland before was overlooked for the benefit of their curious line of questioning. I thought it would be amusing for the few Irish underground metal fans who knew us to see us on tv and that was as far as our ambition for the debacle went really. People still mention it to me now, ten years on so I guess it worked as an exercise in band publicity although Jason and I look quite bewildered in the clip. Which we were, hahaha…

Akercocke-2016-1024x764

Q5: So, It seems contradictory that Renaissance (big change) happens when we are going to die. what’s the meaning behind the album title “Renaissance in Extremis”? Also, art work is so beautiful. Is there any concept in this record?

【DAVID】: No concept overall for the album, apart from it being the first non-Satanic piece of work the band has ever created. I contributed less than half of the lyrics this time round and I certainly had no overall thematic concept myself personally. The title of the album is pretty self explanatory – the artwork and design was all created by Sean Keatley of Skeats designs, its the first time we have sourced someone completely outside of the band for this resource and we are all really pleased with the excellent result.

Q6: Musically, what was the goal of “Renaissance in Extremis”? I feel Paul’s lead guitar is one of the key of this record. Definitely, this is one of the most technical and melodic , full of hook works the band has released, Do you agree that?

【DAVID】: Pauls lead guitar is definitely one of the main highlights of this new album, he’s always been brilliant but he really has outdone himself this time. His development since we all last played together has been incredible and his grasp of technical ability, melody and stunt moves are a key factor in the new albums creative success.

【DAVID】: Paul

Q7: Alan Douches and Neil Kernon are seemed to be perfect choice for mixing and mastering this record. Because you worked with them before. more over, they know both extreme music and prog world, right?

【DAVID】: Neil Kernon definitely understands Ak and always has, his remarkable experience and incredible ability always enhances the listening experience – many Ak enthusiasts prefer the work with his input. It was also my personal pleasure to work with my drumming companion Steve Long who records percussively all of my albums now – we have currently recorded for all of my musical projects, Akercocke, The Antichrist Imperium and Voices.

Q8: Akercocke has amazing diversity from prog/jazz to ambient. But core of band seems to be Death/Black metal elements. Regarding Death metal, Black metal, which one is more important roots for you?

【DAVID】: Hmmm, I’m not sure one is more important than the other, we have very diverse tastes in music as a collective. I guess there are certain bands which all three of us all enjoy and we use their influence as a sort of group reference, like with Death metal we all like Suffocation for instance but I can’t really think of a Black metal band that we all equally like though. So I suppose our collective root is more Death metal by default…we all collectively love Rush though, they remain our favourite influence as a band.

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED DAVID’S LIFE

POSSESSED “SEVEN CHURCHES”

Seven_Churches_(Possessed_album_-_cover_art)

Okay, first has to be POSSESSED ‘Seven Churches’, that changed everything for me, I connected with it on such a level that it felt like the last missing piece of the jigsaw of life! The production, the songs, the lyrics, the cover – had such an effect on me that I’ve never been the same since, I used to put the vinyl on my home stereo and smash my bedroom up in absolute celebration of its violent perfection. It still kicks the shit out of anything any heavy metal band has made in the last ten or twenty years.

JAPAN “OLI ON CANVAS”

Japan_-_Oil_On_Canvas

I completely fell in love with JAPAN ‘Oil on Canvas’, the double album which I learnt many years later was meant to be a live record but in fact the only live element remaining is the drums, as everything else was re-recorded. Steve Jansen is my favourite drummer and his playing and sound on this album completely kicked the chair from under me, his flawless simple creativity was a massive influence on how I considered percussive input in composition. Steve Long and I still use the sound of Jansen’s kit on this recording as a template to perfection – the incredible writing on this collection of songs from throughout the bands career make this easily the ultimate example of their genius. I would listen to all four sides of the vinyl and then just start again, listening again and again – one of the only albums I have ever done this with.

DAVID SYLVIAN “SECRETS OF THE BEEHIVE”

220px-David_Sylvian-Secrets_of_the_Beehive_(album_cover)

Also the solo album by DAVID SYLVIAN ‘Secrets of the Beehive’ was another listening experience that changed the game again, his previous solo albums were incredible but very natural progressions from his previous band work. This album seemed to stand on its own as a listening experience, so absorbing and atmospheric that is felt like it infiltrated the room with its sonic presence, as though time were standing still and it was impossible not to listen to it in its entirety once you allowed the needle to touch the record. Utterly mesmerising vocals from Sylvian, whose voice appeared to exist on a frequency wavelength that uniquely affected the soul so deeply to provoke an emotional response unlike any other singer I’d ever heard. Steve Jansens minimal yet powerful contribution to the textures required elevated him to such superior percussive stature on this album that it made me completely re-assess my thoughts on playing the drums at the time.

LEVEL 42 “TRUE COLOURS”

Truecolours_level

LEVEL 42 ’True Colours’ was another massive influence on my attitude toward music, drumming and also rather importantly, on writing lyrics. Phil Gould was and is a huge inspiration on my playing drums but it was a real surprise to me at the time I discovered this work that he was also responsible for the remarkable, unusual and erudite lyrics. I had always had an interest in writing but it was crucial at the time that I realised that any member of the group could in fact create the words, not necessarily the person responsible for singing them, which seems such an obvious thing now but at the time it seemed like Gould’s contribution was so refreshing and vital to the very heart and soul of the band. I soon discovered Neil Peart and RUSH after this, another incredible drummer responsible for the cerebral identity of his own band.

GARY NUMAN “THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE”

ThePleasurePrinciple1

First album I ever bought was GARY NUMAN ‘The Pleasure Principle’ – so that changed my life by default, I was eight years old and loved music and was lucky enough to be young at such a superb time for music in the early eighties when artists were bold and inventive,- fearless, creative and innovative. Numans’ early work was so rich and compelling and his drummer at the time Cedric Sharpley really adds an infectious groove to the bleak and heavy atmosphere of the music, which was quite unusual at the time but judged perfectly by his superb playing.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

C1uS1Cds9ZS._SL1000_.png

Thank you so much for your interest in the band – we would sincerely love to travel to Japan and play but have yet to be invited, hopefully one day we will be able to bring our music to your incredible country and meet the Japanese underground metal enthusiasts.
