NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【FRONTIERER : UNLOVED】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH PEDRAM VALIANI OF FRONTIERER !!

“I Find Reviewers, Fans And Critics Are Often Guilty Of Wanting To Consume a Record On a Commute. That Attitude Of Convenience Doesn’t Resonate With Me And I Listen To My Records The Way I’d Like To Listen To a Record As a Fan.”

DISC REVIEW “UNLOVED”

FRONTIERER “UNLOVED” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH PEDRAM VILIANI

Q1: It seems Frontierer started as a side project. You and Chad have main bands, Sectioned and A Dark Orbit, also Scotland and US are not so close. How did Frontierer come to be?

【PEDRAM】: We linked up through MySpace years ago and Chad asked to do vocals for Sectioned songs but I said no due to the distance. I was focused on keeping the band local. Yet, ironically that’s how Frontierer was born. We did a track together called “Dissolver” which wasn’t released through any band and it all started from there. Now, we are a full touring band with a few crew members!

Q2: Off the top of my head, I imagine your band name Frontierer means you want to break the border of musical genres. Do you agree that?

【PEDRAM】: The name choice came from an almost lazy, convenience. Chad suggested “frontiersman” and I didn’t like that at all. So we just took Frontier and stuck an extra “er” on the end.

Q3: Regarding genres, could you tell us your musical background? What inspired you to start playing guitar?

【PEDRAM】: I played violin for 3 months as my mum always put me forward to try new activities at school. My best friend at the time did it so I got roped into that. I hated it and had no interest in music at all. I began to listen to “Now That’s What I Call Music” tapes and cds because I’d find a couple of songs on the radio I liked. Rather than just buy the single on a disc i’d buy the full compilation and just repeat the tracks I liked. Then in junior school I saw other classmates walking around with offspring, korn and slipknot hoodies. I always wondered what all the fuss was about so decided to download an album from each of those bands and that’s how I got into heavier music. Eventually I decided to pick up guitar to learn how to play those songs.

Now That’s What I Call Music” (所謂ヒットコンピ NOW) のテープや CD は聴くようになったんだ。

Q4: Anyway, let’s talk about your newest record “Unloved”. It’s kind of pessimistic, gloomy title, I feel. Do you have any concept or lyrical themes in this record?

【PEDRAM】: The name was picked a long time ago with no intention for what the lyrics would be. Coincidentally, most of us ended up breaking out of relationships and having issues so that partly influenced it.

Q5: In the interview of Rolling Stone mag, you said “I like the concept of ‘random’ and I’m trying to incorporate it a lot more across my music.”. And definitely “Unloved” is “random” record for me. It’s really more unpredictable, experimental, and adventurous than your previous record “Orange Mathematics”, right?

【PEDRAM】: Rather than writing a record that peaked at the end I wanted to write one where most of the experimentation sat in the middle. Typically on a lot of records I like there’s a lul in the middle. Normally the more “filler” tracks lie around here. Pacing was crucial because it was ill-considered in the last record. The shock factor isn’t the same because people who know us already have that vibe from album 1 but there will always be an element of surprise to what we do even if the dosage is incremental. So, that quote was a bit of a misnomer from me. I like unpredictability but in a controlled manner

Q6: Even if it is controlled, “Unlove” is not easy for listeners to understand, digest in once or twice listening, right? It seems to be antithesis against the modern age when music is consumed easily. How about that?

【PEDRAM】: I am much more into incremental changes making an overall large change because that’s normally how I react to records by bands I follow. One common gripe is that our records are “too long”. I think if you understand that the vibe of the music is to be intense in a variation of ways, one of those ways is to make it almost indigestible. I find reviewers, fans and critics are often guilty of wanting to consume a record on a commute. That attitude of convenience doesn’t resonate with me and I listen to my records the way I’d like to listen to a record as a fan – which is satisfied both sonically and in terms of the duration of the piece of work. If most people can’t listen to it one go its done the job for me. It’ll either force you to adjust your ears and become sensitised to it or you’ll throw it in the bin and never listen to it again.

Q7: Also, Digital Hardcore influence on tracks such as ‘Heartless 101’, and throughout the breakbeats of “Unloved & Oxidised” and “Fluorescent Nights” are pushing everything to the limit, breaking the genre’s boundaries. It’s diversity, eclectic sound makes definitely “Frontierer” what it is, right?

【PEDRAM】: Frontierer up to now has intense metal record vibes because it’s written to promote a reaction to those who seek a high from listening to that type of music. I get that vibe out of my own music when I write and listen but I become more desensitised as I go on. There won’t always be exclusive single dynamics pushing the records. But I am finding my way to executing the other types of sonic influence I have and incorporating those into our songs.

Q8: In the genre of Math-core, your whammy sirens and fuzz sound are really unique, definitely that made you separate from originators like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Messhuggah. How did you come up the idea?

【PEDRAM】: I certainly wasn’t the first. I try to take the best bits of bands I like and turn them into my own tracks. I actually think it was probably an Emmure song where I heard the whammy being used. I didn’t like the song but came away with it thinking “I can do a lot more with this” and I always liked the pedal having had one for years. I just didn’t have the right frame of mind to write using it. I think it is an important pedal as any other standard effect on the market today.
