プログレッシブ・メタルは、興味深い二面性を持っています。その血統からサウンドもテーマもダークであることが要求され、荒々しく、千変万化の野獣を召喚していく一方で、かつてプログの巨人たちが纏っていた光、希望、平和、喜びのファンタジーをも当然しなやかに受け継いでいます。この二面性を今、最も巧みに表現するのが、昨年の英 Prog Magazine 読者投票で最優秀 “未契約” バンドの座を勝ち取った英国の蒼、AZURE です。

“Self-Crucifixion” はその象徴でしょう。CHON を想起させるアップビートな数学的愉悦を前面に押し出しながら、重い十字架を背負う曲名と歌詞は著しくダークなテーマを表現。同時に、モダンな中に80年代の光彩や美技を織り込むのも彼らのやり方。Vai から Yngwie に豹変するような Galen の妙技は、楽曲に歓びを伴うタイム・パラドックスをもたらしています。加えて、時に Kate Bush や Andre Matos さえ思わせる表情豊かな Chris の歌声は、リスナーに中毒性を植え付けながらリピートを加速させるのです。
一方で、鍵盤奏者 Shaz Dudhia は、 “A Sailor Will Learn” や “Outrun God” で 8bit の異世界を創造し、AZURE のプログを大海原へと解き放っていきます。そしてとどまることを知らない 彼らの青い海は “The Jellyfish” で The 1975のようなインディーポップを、”Ameotoko I – The Curse” で敬愛する J-Rock や JRPG までをも飲み込みプログの新たな波を発生させていくのです。押し寄せるは、DREAM THEATER や PAIN OF SALVATION に初めて出会った時を思い出させる圧倒的な陶酔感。
ミキシングとマスタリングは、SLICE THE CAKE の Gareth Mason と Jonas Johansson が担当。何層もの楽器と様々なダイナミクスを一つもかき消すことなく、インパクトのあるプロダクションを実現しています。

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【CHRIS】: Hello! Glad to be here!
I grew up listening to lots of 80s Heavy Metal and Rock, namely Iron Maiden, as well as Genesis, Green Day and Avril Lavigne!
Because of growing up with both Iron Maiden and Genesis, I ended up falling in love with progressive music very quickly, and by the time I’d met Galen Stapley (Guitarist/Cofounder of Azure) we were both just really ready to make some crazy, high energy prog with lots of catchy chorusses!
We’ve been working together for 7 years now, but in the last 2 everything has really started to come together for Azure – especially with band members, and the overall sound we’ve been hunting for!
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずはあなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【CHRIS】: やあ、インタビューをありがとう！僕は80年代のヘヴィ・メタルやロック、つまり IRON MAIDEN をはじめ、GENESIS, GREEN DAY, Avril Lavigne みたいなアーティストを聴いて育ったんだ。
IRON MAIDEN と GENESIS を聴いて育ったから、プログレッシブ・ミュージックがすぐに好きになり、Galen Stapley（Azureのギタリスト／共同創設者）と出会う頃には、キャッチーなコーラスがたくさん入ったクレイジーでハイエナジーなプログを作る準備がお互いに整っていたんだよね。
僕たちは7年間一緒に仕事をしてきたけど、この2年間で、AZURE にとってすべてが本当にまとまり始めたんだ。特にバンド・メンバーや、探し求めていた全体的なサウンドにかんしてね。
Q2: How did the band come to be? What’s the meaning behind your band name Azure?
【CHRIS】: Me and Galen went to the same university to study music, in Brighton UK – and one day we were separately walking out of a lecture when Galen approached me about my Dream Theater bag! We agreed that we both loved progressive music, and started jamming from then on! We had (and still have) a huge respect for each other’s musicality, and we slowly learned how to share our strengths and weaknesses in order to create something special.
Though I was 18 at the time, I’d already released some music under my name ‘Chris Sampson’, but Galen pointed out that the stuff we were writing definitely belonged under a new name, and not just my solo project – we wanted it to feel like a real, collaborative band. So one cold English night, I was sitting thinking about the things that inspired me name-wise, and I kept coming back to things relating to the sky or the sea.
There are a couple of important characters in the Azure universe that strongly embody both sea and sky, and Azure just felt like the perfect colour for the music! It didn’t help that I had blue coloured hair at the time though haha!
Our amazing bass player Alex Miles caught our eye several times as we progressed as a band in Brighton, and he was playing for other bands in the music scene. We couldn’t get over how tight his playing was, or how much character it had, as well as his amazing stage performances! When we finally approached him, everything just clicked, and we can’t imagine Azure without him now!
The same goes for the amazing Shaz Dudhia on keyboards. This guy is so good that by the time we were studying, when we were in our late teens, this guy was already playing for the house bands and in the clubs as a well known keyboard legend! For a while he seemed way out of our league, but once we had written ‘Mistress’, Shaz really clicked with the project and we all agreed that it would be amazing for him to come on board. The line-up is a dream come true, but it just took some time to get there! When we write music now, everyone brings something really unique to the table, along with a lot of good laughs and some amazing playing!
Q2: AZURE 結成の経緯をお話ししていただけますか？
【CHRIS】: 僕と Galen はイギリスのブライトンで音楽を学ぶために同じ大学に通っていたんだけど、ある日、講義を終えて別々に歩いていたら Galen が僕の持っていた DREAM THEATER のバッグのことを聞いてきたんだ！そして、お互いプログレッシブ・ミュージックが好きだということがわかって、それ以来ジャムるようになったんだ！ それから僕たちは、お互いの音楽性に大きな敬意を払い（今でもそうだよ）、特別なものを作るためにお互いの長所と短所を共有する方法を徐々に学んでいったんだよ。
当時18歳だった僕は、すでに Chris Sampson という名前でいくつかの楽曲をリリースしていたんだけど、Galen が、僕らが書いているものは、僕のソロ・プロジェクトではなく、新しい名前で出すべきだと言ったんだ。それで、あるイギリスの寒い夜に、名前にインスピレーションを与えてくれるものについて考えていた。考えれば考えるほど、空や海に関連するものに何度も戻ってきたんだよね。
AZURE (イタリア語で青) の世界には、海と空の両方を強く体現している重要な性質があって、まさに僕たちの音楽にぴったりの色だと感じたんだよね。まあ、当時は僕の髪が青かったから仕方ないんだけどね（笑）。
僕たちの素晴らしいベーシスト、Alex Miles は、僕たちがブライトンでバンドとして活動していく中で何度か目に留まったんだ。彼はブライトンの音楽シーンで、他のバンドで演奏していたんだよ。彼の演奏のタイトさ、個性の強さ、そして素晴らしいステージングには圧倒されたね。最終的に彼にアプローチしたとき、すべてがうまくいき、今では彼なしの AZURE は考えられなくなったよ。

Q3: Congratulations on winning “Best Unsigned band” in the Prog Mag Readers’ Poll! You guys are bringing a breath of fresh air to the nearly 50-year-old genre of Prog Rock! But, with the passing of so many prog giants and the lack of young bands, why did you decide to jump into a genre that seems to be on the decline?
【CHRIS】: Thanks so much! We are genuinely so surprised and grateful that we have so many amazing fans who voted for us!
This question is interesting actually, because although we are fairly inspired by lots of progressive bands, those bands aren’t the reason we put ourselves in the progressive category. I think the truth is, we have such a wide range of sounds that we want to draw from – once all those sounds come together, especially with the lyrics and the high technicality and rhythms and harmony, the music sounds closer to Prog Rock than anything else!
We sometimes label ourselves as ‘Adventure Rock’, ‘Art Rock’, or ‘Fantasy Prog’, and we also get referred to as ‘Fairy Prog’ by some of our friends. All of these labels feel good too! We make music about going on adventures, and there’s a lot of magic involved, as well as some modern, personal stuff too – as long as people are enjoying what we’re doing, we don’t mind how they label us.

【CHRIS】: 本当にありがとう！こんなにたくさんの素晴らしいファンの方に投票してもらえて、純粋にとても驚き、感謝しているよ！
この質問はとても興味深いよね。というのも、僕たちは多くのプログレッシブ・バンドからかなり影響を受けているけど、それでも彼らは僕たちがプログレッシブなカテゴリーにいる理由ではないんだよね。真実は、幅広いサウンドの中から引き出したいものがあるからここにいるんだと思う。特に歌詞や高い技術力、リズムやハーモニーなど、それらのサウンドがひとつになると、その音楽は他の何よりもプログ・ロックに近く聞こえるんだ！

Q4: What’s interesting about you guys is that you’re not just influenced by the “usual” prog bands like Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Genesis and Yes, but you’re also influenced by metal bands like Iron Maiden, Steve Vai like shred, and indie rock influences like 1975, The Weekend, etc. It’s a wide range of expressions. You seem to want to break out of the narrow cage of prog, would you agree?
【CHRIS】: I guess, for us, the point of Prog is that we feel like it shouldn’t be a cage! Some people are quite protective over what constitutes ‘real’ prog, but we see ‘prog’ as a genre where anything can happen, whether it be the dramatic fantasy storytelling and guitar harmonies of Iron Maiden, or the slithering shred melodies of Steve Vai, or even the sugary and bouncy energy of The 1975. A good example of a song with all of those moments is our song ‘Ameotoko I – The Curse’, from our most recent album!
Q4: 仰る通り、あなたたちが面白いのは、DREAM THEATER や QUEENSRYCHE, YES, GENESIS といった典型的なプログ/プログメタルからだけでなく、IRON MAIDEN のようなメタル、Steve Vai のようなシュレッダー、THE 1975のようなインディー・ロックからも平等に影響を受けているところでしょう。
狭い檻に閉じ込められるなんてゴメンだよという感じですよね？
【CHRIS】: まさに、僕たちにとってプログのポイントは、”檻に入れるべきではない！” と感じていることなんだろうね。何をもって “本物の” プログレとするかということにこだわる人もいる。だけど僕たちは “プログレ” を、IRON MAIDEN のドラマチックなファンタジーの物語とギター・ハーモニーであろうと、Steve Vai のそそり立つシュレッドのメロディであろうと、The 1975 の甘く弾けるエネルギーでさえ、何でも起こりうるジャンルとして捉えているんだよね。
そういった瞬間がすべて詰まった曲の良い例が、僕らの最新アルバムに収録されている ‘Ameotoko I – The Curse’ なんだ!
Q5: You also have songs with Japanese narration and titles in Japanese, right? Does the concept of the album have anything to do with Japan?
【CHRIS】: We definitely enjoy a lot of art from all over the world, and there are quite a few things from Japan that have really inspired us.
The songs ‘Ameotoko I’ and ‘Ameotoko II’ are based on some time I spent obsessively reading mythology and supernatural stories from around the world. I came across the idiom 雨男 and fell totally in love with it. From then on, the first Ameotoko song was born, leading to me writing a whole novel based on the character, as well as the second Ameotoko song.
We have also used a few pieces of Japanese narration at the start of our songs, because they have been from works we really loved and thought were totally suitable for the song. Because I sing so much in English, it made a lot of sense to use the Japanese narration instead of English – the quotes flowed far better musically when in Japanese, and it breaks up the monolingual pace of the rest of the album.
Q5: その “Ameotoko” もそうですが、日本語のタイトル、ナレーションなど、日本と関連深いアルバムでもありますよね？
【CHRIS】: 僕たちは世界中のアートを楽しんでいるんだけど、その中でも日本からインスピレーションを受けたものがたくさんあるんだよ。
“アメオトコI” と “アメオトコII” は、世界中の神話や超常現象の物語を夢中になって読んだことがベースになっていてね。”雨男” という言葉に出会って、すっかり気に入ってしまったんだよ。そこからアメオトコの歌が生まれ、アメオトコを題材にした小説を書くことになり、アメオトコの歌2作目も生まれたんだ。
また、曲の冒頭に日本語のナレーションが入ることがあるよね。これは僕たちが大好きで、その曲にぴったりだと思った作品のナレーションを使っているんだ。僕は英語で歌うことが多いから、英語ではなく日本語のナレーションを使うのはとても理にかなっているよ。日本語の方が音楽的な流れがよく、アルバムの他の部分がモノリンガル (一つの言語) のペースになるのを解消してくれるしね。
Q6: Speaking of Japan, you also use 8-bit synth sounds like video game music, are you also influenced by Japanese game or anime culture?
【CHRIS】: Absolutely! We don’t say this often enough, but one of our absolute biggest influences is JRPGs. Not just the music, but also the storylines, and the format of the adventures and excitement. We still play hundreds of hours of JRPGs to this day, because they are just so rich with inspiring art!
We don’t take a huge amount of inspiration from Japanese anime culture directly, but we do love J-Rock and seeing as there is a lot of amazing, high energy J-rock at the start of some great animes, we do sometimes end up riding on the feeling of writing songs that feel like an anime intro, which is great! That being said, myself and Galen’s joint favourite anime is ‘Hunter X Hunter’, and the storylines in that show inspire us every day!
Like some other new bands in the scene in the UK, we do also take a lot of inspiration from the storylines and music of Ghibli films too, because so many of them are ripe with amazing emotions that are just so exciting to try and capture!
Q6: ビデオゲームのような 8bit サウンドも印象的ですが、あなたたちの “ファンタジー・プログ” は日本のゲームやアニメといったファンタジーに影響を受けているんでしょうか？
【CHRIS】: もちろんだよ！（笑) あまり言わないけど、僕たちが最も影響を受けたもののひとつに JRPG がある。音楽だけでなく、ストーリーも、冒険や興奮の形もすべてね。今でも何百時間も日本のロールプレイング・ゲームをプレイしているのは、それだけ刺激的なアートに富んでいるからなんだ。
日本のアニメ文化から直接大きなインスピレーションを受けることはないんだけど、僕たちは J-Rock が大好きで、素晴らしいアニメの冒頭には素晴らしいハイエナジーな J-Rock がたくさん使われている。だから、アニメのイントロのような感じの曲を作るという感覚にはよくなるんだ。とはいえ、僕と Galen 共に好きなアニメは “HUNTER×HUNTER” で、そのストーリーは毎日僕らにインスピレーションを与えてくれているね！
あとは、イギリスのシーンにいる他の新しいバンドと同じように、僕たちもジブリ映画のストーリーや音楽から多くのインスピレーションを受けているよ。多くの作品が感情を掻き立てるから、僕たちもその感覚を捕まえたいんだよね！
Q7: I’ve interviewed ichika before. So, I was surprised to hear you mention Ichikoro’s name in another interview, does the Japanese music scene appeal to you?
【CHRIS】: Yes, very much so! As I said earlier, we have a huge love for J-Rock bands, and a lot of the shared projects in that scene. Ichikoro is amazing, and is linked to other bands we enjoy, such as Gesu no Kiwami Otome and Indigo La End. We are also big lovers of the Japanese metal and power-metal scene, and regularly listen to bands such as Galneryus, Doll$Boxx, and Unlucky Morpheus!
Q7: 私は Ichika にもインタビューを行ったことがあるので、あなたが Ichikoro の大ファンだと知って驚きましたよ！
【CHRIS】: そうなんだよね。先ほども言ったように、僕たちはJ-Rock バンドや、そのシーンの多くのプロジェクトに大きな愛着を持っているんだよね。

Q8: Speaking of prog metal, there are many legendary bands such as Fates Warning, Symphony X, Ayreon, and Pain of Salvation, in addition to Dream Theater and Queensryche that I mentioned earlier. Of course, Azure is Azure, but which band would you like to aim for the most?
【CHRIS】: Considering how odd our music can get, this might seem a little ambitious, but it would be incredible to have a career as interesting as Dream Theater, or Queensryche’s. Both of those bands arguably made their biggest mark when they released their concept albums, Scenes From A Memory, and Operation: Mindcrime respectively. So if we can really focus our energies and our ideas into some really good conceptual music, who knows what could happen?
Q8: プログ・メタルには、DREAM THEATER, QUEENSRYCHE 以外にも、FATES WARNING, SYMPHONY X, AYREON, PAIN OF SALVATION など様々にユニークなバンドが存在しますね。もちろん、AZURE は AZURE ですが、どのバンドを目標にしたいですか？
【CHRIS】: 僕たちの音楽がいかに奇妙なものであるかを考えると、これは少し野心的に思えるかもしれないけど、DREAM THEATER や QUEENSRYCHE のような興味深いキャリアを持つことができたら最高だよね。この2つのバンドは、コンセプト・アルバム “Scenes From A Memory” と “Operation: Mindcrime” をリリースしたときに、間違いなく最大の足跡を残したよね。
だから、もし僕らのエネルギーとアイデアを本当に良いコンセプト音楽に集中させることができたら、何が起こるかわからなと思うな。
FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED CHRIS’S LIFE
IRON MAIDEN “SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON”
This album is just a masterpiece. I’ve grown up with it, I know every song inside and out, I feel like I could play the whole album in my head! The particular choices of melody, keyboard sounds, guitar solos and lyrics… It haunts me how a band could get something so right. I take a huge amount of inspiration from this album at all times, and for a long time I even had a huge poster of it in my studio above my keyboard, so whenever I’d be writing, I’d have to look at the poster and think ‘but is what I’m writing as good as Seventh Son?’ and if not, I’d start again! haha
このアルバムはまさに名盤。僕はこのアルバムと共に成長し、全ての曲を知り尽くし、アルバム全体を頭の中で再生できるような気さえするよ。メロディ、キーボードの音、ギターソロ、歌詞の選択…。バンドがどうしてこんなにも正しいことをできるのか、不思議でならないね。長い間、スタジオのキーボードの上にこのアルバムの巨大なポスターを貼っていたよ。
DISASTERPEACE “HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER”
Another masterpiece. I could talk forever about how gorgeous and haunting it is, but I’ll just keep it short and say this: The game was amazing, but the soundtrack will stick with me forever. I listened to it when I was writing my first book, I listen to it when I’ve read books, I’m even listening to it right now!
もう一つの名作。この作品がどれだけゴージャスで心に響くか、永遠に語り続けたいところだけど、短くまとめてこう言おう。ゲームも素晴らしいけど、このサウンドトラックは永遠に僕の心に残る。初めて本を書いたときにも聴いたし、本を読んだときにも聴いたし、今だって聴いている！
EVANESCENCE “THE OPEN DOOR”
I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is about this album, but I’ve been listening to it since it came out (and I was very young). The orchestration is so nuanced, and the vocal harmonies are never happening in simple 3rds or 6ths. It’s a delight from start to finish.
このアルバムのどこがいいのかはっきり言えないんたけど、このアルバムが出たときからずっと聴いている。すごく若いときから。オーケストレーションのニュアンスがとても良く、ボーカルのハーモニーも決して単純な 3rd や 6th で重ねられているわけではない。最初から最後まで楽しませてくれるね。
THE 1975 “I LIKE IT WHEN YOU SLEEP FOR YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL YET SO UNAWARE OF IT”
Aside from the stupidly long album name, I guess what I love most about this album is the ability to be fun, sugary, sexy, thoughtful, feminine, and pompous, all while being creative. So many great moments on this album, I totally rinsed it when it first came out!
バカみたいに長いアルバム名はさておき、このアルバムで一番好きなのは、楽しくて、甘くて、セクシーで、思慮深くて、女性的で、尊大で、すべてがクリエイティブであることかな。このアルバムには素晴らしい瞬間がたくさんあるので、発売当初は完全にやられてたね。
EVERYTHING EVERYTHING “GET TO HEAVEN”
I would usually say a Genesis album in my top 5, but today I’m really thinking about how intimidatingly creative ‘Everything Everything’ is. This album was probably their most commercial at the time, with lots of pop hooks, but it is still loaded with totally genius lyricism, and some fantastic sounds that I’ve never heard anywhere else!
いつもなら GENESIS のアルバムをトップ5に挙げるんだけど、今日は Everything Everything がいかに威圧的でクリエイティブか、本当に考えさせられたよ。このアルバムはおそらく当時の彼らの中で最も商業的で、ポップなフックがたくさんあるけれど、それでも完全に天才的なリリックと、他では聴いたことがないような素晴らしいサウンドが満載なんだ!
MESSAGE FOR JAPAN
I want to say a huge thank you to everyone in Japan who’s joined the ride in the last 2 years and supported us! It’s so, so amazing to be sending CDs and T-shirts so far from England, especially to a country responsible for a lot of our influences! To anyone new: thank you so much for reading this and getting to know us a bit better – there will be new music very soon!
