「スラッシュというジャンルは、僕たち全員がプレイしていて本当に楽しいと感じる音楽なんだ。でも、タフなメタル・ヘッドのように振る舞っている自分たちを、客観的な自分は真剣に受け止めることができない。だからピザのような馬鹿げたテーマを持つことで、音楽を通して、タフガイじゃない自分たち、その個性をより素直に反映させることができるんだ」
メタルやハードコアのようなエクストリーム・ミュージックの世界において、”マッチョ” で “タフ” で “シリアス” であることは長年、リスペクトを得るための至上命題だったのかもしれません。弱さも優しさもユーモアも、激しい音楽にとっては足枷でしかない。しかし、そんな時代は過ぎ去ろうとしています。METALLICA が自分たちが無敵ではないことを告白して、ファンと痛みを分かち合おうとしているように、激音の伝道者たちは本来の自分を曝け出しつつあります。当然でしょう。いつでも完璧で鋼鉄な人間など、存在しないのですから。
「シーンには、自分の怒りや不満、意見や見解を表現する手段として音楽を使いたがる人たちがたくさんいる。それは素晴らしいことで、僕も彼らは大好きだよ。でもね、僕らがそれをやると “フェイク” なんだよな。だって僕らは、最高の音楽は、音楽を通して自分自身をありのままに表現しているアーティストから生まれるものだと思っているから」
メルボルンで焼かれた PIZZA DEATH も、メタルのステレオタイプと本来の自分の間で悩み、葛藤し、ピザの悪魔の力を借りたユーモアの影で遂にありのままの個性を解き放つことに成功したバンドです。”Pasta of Muppets”, “Naplam Cheese” といった思わず笑顔になるようなジョークの裏側で、彼らは当時の英雄たちに引けも劣らぬ猛攻を仕掛けていきます。スラッシュ、ハードコア、グルーヴ・メタルにグラインド・コア。ピザのトッピングは、MUNICIPAL WASTE や TOXIC HOLOCAUST のクロス・オーバーに輪をかけて色とりどり。そうして、その原動力はやはり、メタルのステレオタイプとは異なる、ハイオク満タンの POWER “Violence” TRIP。特筆すべきは、27分20曲が瞬く間に通り過ぎるそのキャッチーな “ピザの耳”。
もちろん、チーズィーな “ピザ・スラッシュ “とは、METALLICA, EXODUS, KREATOR といった80年代のアイドルに傾倒しすぎた新しいスピード・メタル・バンドに向けられた蔑称ですが、PIZZA DEATH は明らかにこの言葉を意識しながら、反発して、より自分たちの個性を曝け出すことに成功しています。結局、”ピザの耳” はアンチが多いものの、食べてみればなかなかの歯ごたえと美味を備えているのですから。
今回弊誌では、ベーシストの Kane がインタビューに答えてくれました。「かのお方こそ、最強のアンチクラスト (反ピザの外側の硬い生地) 様だ！なぜ、どうやってそうなってしまったのかはわからないが、アンチクライストがピザ生地にはまり込んでしまい、それがシン・スリジー・ピッツェリアのオーブンに入れられると、サタン自身がピザ生地に焼き付けられ、アンチクラスト様に大変身してしまったのだ！」 ピザの耳は許すがパイナップルの侵入は許さない。絶滅させよ！どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH KANE
Q1: First of all, what kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?
【KANE】: When I was growing up and first started getting into music I was listening to a lot of hip hop like Cypress Hill, FU-Schinickens and Wu Tang. Then a couple of years later at the age of 11 I came across Jimi Hendrix which lead me down a rabbit hole to find bands like Metallica, Sepultura and Slayer. Then one day I heard this band Primus that had this sound that exploded my juvenile brain and I knew I wanted to be a bass player right there and then and now here we are.
Q1: 本誌初登場です！まずは、あなたの音楽的なバックグラウンドからお話ししていただけますか？
【KANE】: 成長し始めて音楽にハマり始めたころは、Cypress Hill, FU-Schinickens, Wu Tang などのヒップホップをよく聴いていたね。
それから数年後、11歳のときにジミ・ヘンドリックスに出会って、METALLICA, SEPLUTURA, SLAYER といったバンドに出会ったんだ。そしてある日、僕の幼い脳みそを爆発させるようなサウンドを持つバンド、PRIMUS を聴いて、その場でベーシストになりたいと思ったんだ！
Q2: How did Pizza Death come to be?
【KANE】: Pat (vocals) first came up with the idea at the beginning of 2020 (I assume while high) and one day at a party he told me about how he was starting a pizza themed band called Pizza Death with Tim (drums) and asked me to play bass. I honestly thought it was kind of dumb idea and wasn’t that excited about it. I had heard Pat sing in his previous bands and always thought he had one best voices I had ever heard and Tim has a reputation in the heavy music scene in Melbourne as being a freak show on the drums so I reluctantly agreed to play in the dumb pizza band just because I thought getting to jam with the two of them would be a sick experience. About a week later Pat told me he got Plonk to agree to play guitar and there couldn’t have been a more perfect fit!
Unfortunately at that exact same time COVID had made its way down to Australia and the city of Melbourne was put into a strict lockdown for 9 months. During that time nobody was allowed to leave their house unless it was to get food or medical supplies so Pat and Tim worked really hard with what resources they had at home to record a long list of demo tracks and send them to Plonk and myself to learn while we were stuck at home. Eventually once the lockdown restrictions were eased the first thing we did was get a rehearsal room and start practicing these songs and shape them into what would become our first album Slice of Death!
Q2: PIZZA DEATH 結成の経緯をお話ししていただけますか？
【KANE】: パット（ヴォーカル）が最初にこのアイディアを思いついたのは2020年の初め（たぶんハイになっている時）で、ある日のパーティーで彼はティム（ドラム）とピザをテーマにしたバンド PIZZA DEATH を始めるからベースを弾いてくれと言ってきたんだ。僕は正直なところ、馬鹿馬鹿しいアイディアだと思ったし、それほど興奮もしなかったけどね。
でも、パットが以前やっていたバンドで歌っているのを聴いたことがあったし、ティムはメルボルンのヘヴィ・ミュージック・シーンではドラムのフリーク・ショーとして有名だった。それから約1週間後、パットがプロンクにギターを弾くことを承諾させたと教えてくれたんだ！
不運なことに、ちょうどその頃、COVIDがオーストラリアに上陸し、メルボルンの街は9ヶ月間、厳重に封鎖された。その間、食糧や医療品を手に入れるためでない限り、誰も家から出ることが許されなかったから、パットとティムは家にあるものを使って一生懸命にデモ・トラックを録音し、家に閉じこもっている間にプロンクと僕に送って勉強させていたんだ。やがてロックダウンが緩和されると、僕たちが最初にしたことは、リハーサル・ルームを確保し、これらの曲を練習し、ファースト・アルバム “Slice of Death” の形にすることだったね！
Q3: Why did you decide to do thrash metal with a pizza theme?
【KANE】: Thrash is just a genre of music that we all find really fun to play but we can’t take ourselves seriously acting like tough metal heads so having a silly theme about it like pizza gives a more honest reflection of our personalities through the music which I believe is the reason I find Pizza Death to be the most enjoyable project I’ve ever work on.
Human Meat Lovers with goats cheese cut into a pentagram! All other pizzas are posers! As far as I know Thin Slizzy Pizzeria is the only place you can get it and you need to know the secret password to order it. You can’t just be any person off the street walking in and picking it off the menu.
Q3: なぜピザがテーマのスラッシュ・メタルが爆誕したんですか？
【KANE】: スラッシュというジャンルは、僕たち全員がプレイしていて本当に楽しいと感じる音楽なんだ。でも、タフなメタル・ヘッドのように振る舞っている自分たちを、客観的な自分は真剣に受け止めることができない。だから、ピザのような馬鹿げたテーマを持つことで、音楽を通して、タフガイじゃない自分たち、その個性をより素直に反映させることができるんだ。
だからこそ、PIZZA DEATH は僕にとって、今までで一番楽しくて自然なバンドなんだよね。
ちなみに、最もメタルなピザは、ペンタグラムにカットされた人肉ピザヤギチーズを添えてだ!他のピザはすべてポーザーさ！僕の知る限り、Thin Slizzy Pizzeria がそれを入手できる唯一の場所であり、注文するには秘密のパスワードを知る必要がある。通りから歩いてきてメニューからそれを選ぶだけではダメなんだ。
Q4: “Pizza Thrash” is also an insult to young thrash metalers who are too devoted to Metallica and Exodus, right?
【KANE】: That is true but I wouldn’t say Pizza Death is pizza thrash I’d say Pizza Death is crossover thrash that’s pizza themed.…Are there any non metal heads out there following this conversation so far?
Q4: METALLICA や EXODUS に入れ込みすぎた若いスラッシュ・メタル・ヘッズを “ピザ・スラッシュ” と揶揄することもありますね？
【KANE】: たしかにそうだね。でも、PIZZA DEATH はピザ・スラッシュじゃないよ！ピザをテーマにしたクロスオーバー・スラッシュなんだ！
…ここまでの会話で、メタル・ヘッズじゃない人はついて来れられているかい？
Q5: The pizza monster on the artwork for “Reign of the Anticrust” is very impressive, can you tell us who he is, does he have a name?
【KANE】: That’s none other than the all mighty Anticrust! I’ve got no idea how and I’ve got no idea why but somehow the Antichrist ended up getting stuck inside some pizza dough and then when it got put into the oven at Thin Slizzy Pizzeria Satan himself was baked into the crust of a pizza thus morphing into the Anticrust.
Q5: “Reign of the Anticrust” のアートワークに描かれたピザのモンスターは圧倒的ですね！
【KANE】: かのお方こそ、最強のアンチクラスト (反ピザの外側の硬い生地) 様だ！なぜ、どうやってそうなってしまったのかはわからないが、アンチクライストがピザ生地にはまり込んでしまい、それがシン・スリジー・ピッツェリアのオーブンに入れられると、サタン自身がピザ生地に焼き付けられ、アンチクラスト様に大変身してしまったのだ！
Q6: You guys also have a reputation for Power Trips with full tanks of high octane, don’t you? Are you influenced by them?
【KANE】: I think Power Trip are one of the greatest bands of all time and being mentioned in the same conversation as them is a massive compliment. I got to see them the one time they toured Australia and they were such an amazing live band and really great people.
Q6: ハイオク満タンの POWER TRIP と言われることもありますね？
【KANE】: POWER TRIP は史上最高のバンドのひとつだと思うし、彼らと同じ舞台で語られることは大きな賛辞だよ。彼らがオーストラリア・ツアーをしたときに一度だけ見ることができたんだけど、とても素晴らしいライブ・バンドで、本当に素晴らしい人たちだったね。
Q7: How would you rate Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, or Anthrax “crossover”?
【KANE】: I rate all of those bands very highly, there’s so many great albums between all of them and they’re all incredible to see live. In my opinion Municipal Waste perfected the art of crossover with their album Art of Partying. I opened for Municipal Waste and Iron Reagan when on their tours of Australia while playing in my previous band and Land Phil is the only person I’ve ever met that was able to hold a solid 2 hour conversation about pro wrestling with me.
Q7: MUNICIPAL WASTE, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, ANTHRAX の “クロスオーバー” は、それぞれどのように評価していますか？
【KANE】: どのバンドも非常に高く評価している。どのバンドにも素晴らしいアルバムがたくさんあるし、ライブを見るのも素晴らしいからね。
僕の意見だけど、MUNICIPAL WASTE はアルバム “Art of Partying” でクロスオーバーの芸術を完成させた。前のバンドで演奏していた時に、MUNICIPAL WASTE と IRON REAGAN のオーストラリア・ツアーの前座を務めたことがあるんだけど、Land Phil は今まで会った人の中で唯一、僕とプロレスについて2時間腰を据えてしっかり会話できた人なんだ。
Q8: Metal and hardcore are considered by many in the scene to be “serious,” but what do you think about bringing a sense of humor to it?
【KANE】: We bring a element of humour to it because that’s just honestly who we are as people. There’s a lot of people in the scene that like to use the music as a way of expressing their anger, frustration, opinions and points of view which is great and I love all sorts of bands that are like that but I think if we tried doing that it would come across as fake. The best music comes from artists who are giving a true genuine reflection of themselves through their music.
Q8: メタルやハードコアのような音楽は、シーンの中で多くの人に “シリアス” なものとして受け止められています。あなたたちはそこに “ユーモア” を持ち込んでいますよね？
【KANE】: 僕たちがユーモアの要素を取り入れているのは、それが人としての正直な自分たちだから。
シーンには、自分の怒りや不満、意見や見解を表現する手段として音楽を使いたがる人たちがたくさんいる。それは素晴らしいことで、僕も彼らは大好きだよ。でもね、僕らがそれをやると “フェイク” なんだよな。だって僕らは、最高の音楽は、音楽を通して自分自身をありのままに表現しているアーティストから生まれるものだと思っているから。
