ウクライナへ向けたロシアの非道な侵略が始まって、すでに一年半の月日が経ちました。戦火はおさまることなく混迷と拡大を続け、ウクライナの人々にとって当たり前にあった平和や安全という当たり前の生活は遠のくばかり。しかし、逆境にあってこそ、ヘヴィ・メタルのレジリエンス、反発力や回復力は輝きます。明日全てが失われてしまうかもしれない。そんな限界の非日常において、ウクライナの COSMIC JAGUAR は自らの生きた証をここに残しました。

逆境を跳ね返す力こそ、ヘヴィ・メタルの真骨頂。長年、BESTIAL INVASION で活動してきた Sergio Lunatico はカルト的な人気を得るものの、世界的な名声までは程遠い状況でした。しかし、戦争の勃発と同時に一念発起し結成した COSMIC JAGUAR は、第三世界のメタル、伝統音楽を抱きしめたメタル侵攻の波に乗り、見事に世界的な注目を集めつつあります。DEATH, ATHEIST, VOIVOD, CYNIC, SADIST, CORONER, PESTILENCE といった “あの時代” の特別なテクニカル・メタル、その神秘性が見事にアステカの神話と噛み合った祭壇のメタル・サウンドは、ウクライナから海も山も大陸も超えて、遥かテノチティトランにまで鳴り響くのです。

そう、あのメタル・エジプト神 NILE の名を挙げるまでもなく、ヘヴィ・メタルに国境はありません。メタルの世界でアーティストは、好きな題材を好きなだけ深堀りすることが許されています。日本人にとってのオオカミのような存在である、ジャガーをバンド名に冠するのも彼らのメキシコ愛がゆえ。アヴァンギャルド／テクニカル・スラッシュと表現するのが最適なその多彩さは、ラテン、ファンク、ジャズ、デスメタル、ブラックメタル、ワールド・ミュージックとまさにコズミックな拡がりを見せながら、アステカの民族楽器と女性ボーカルでリスナーをアステカの神殿へと誘います。そうして、かの文明の独特な死生観や終末信仰は、未だなお争いを続ける人類への警告として語り継がれるべきなのかもしれませんね。
今回弊誌では、Sergio Lunatico にインタビューを行うことができました。「ウクライナにおける戦争において、今は安全な場所などなく、いつでもミサイルやドローンに捕捉される可能性があるため、毎日が自分や愛する人にとっての最後の日となりうる、そう思って生きているよ。だからこそ僕たちは生き残るためにあらゆる方法を試しているんだ」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH SERGIO LUNATICO
Q1: First of all, we in Japan are also heartbroken by Russia’s outrageous aggression. What is your situation now? Are you safe now?
【SERGIO】: . Thank you for your support! We have been living in a terrible state of war and chaos for more than a year and a half now and we hope very much that soon this bloody madness will stop and we will return to our former peaceful life. As the time of war in Ukraine shows, there are no safe places now, every day can be the last for you or your loved ones, because you can be caught anywhere by a missile or a drone. So we are trying every way to survive…..
Q1: ロシアの非道な侵略に、私たち日本人も心を痛めていますよ。今はどういった状況ですか？
【SERGIO】: 支援をありがとう！僕たちはもう1年半以上、ひどい戦争と混乱の中で暮らしている。この血なまぐさい狂気が一刻も早く収まり、以前の平和な生活に戻ることを強く望んでいるよ。
ウクライナにおける戦争において、今は安全な場所などなく、いつでもミサイルやドローンに捕捉される可能性があるため、毎日が自分や愛する人にとっての最後の日となりうる、そう思って生きているよ。だからこそ僕たちは生き残るためにあらゆる方法を試しているんだ……。
Q2: It must have been really difficult to make music in the middle of a war. Still, why did you decide to share your metal with the world now?
【SERGIO】: Music was almost always difficult to do, even in times of peace, because your work almost always found little response and feedback from the audience, and it was also difficult to find the means to realise your goals. I’ve been doing music since 2008 and in those 15 years I’ve officially released more than 10 albums and other releases, so I didn’t start doing it just now, but I’ve been doing it for almost half of my life. The band Cosmic Jaguar was formed very spontaneously during the most chaotic time of the war in April 2022. We didn’t have any plans to record an album or anything, because we didn’t know what was going to happen tomorrow, the situation was very dangerous, so we rehearsed as much as possible. In the end we composed and recorded a full album in 4 months from scratch! I sometimes can’t believe how it all happened so fast! I think that’s the charm of the album “The Legacy Of The Aztecs”! I also spontaneously became a vocalist, which I’ve almost never done before, as I’m just a basic bass player! But as they say: I see a purpose, but I do not see obstacles.
Q2: 戦火の中で音楽を制作するのは、並大抵のことではありませんね？
【SERGIO】: 音楽の制作は、たとえ平和な時代であっても難しいものだ。なぜなら、たいていは自分の作品が聴衆からの反応やフィードバックをほとんど得られず、また自分の目標を実現するための手段を見つけることも難しいからね。
僕は2008年から音楽を始め、この15年間で10枚以上のアルバムやその他のリリースを公式に発表してきた。COSMIC JAGUAR というバンドは、2022年4月の戦争の最も混沌とした時期に、自然発生的に結成されたんだ。明日何が起こるかわからない、とても危険な状況だったからこそ、できる限りリハーサルを重ねた。結局、4ヶ月でフルアルバムをゼロから作曲し、レコーディングしたんだ！どうしてこんなに早くできたのか、時々信じられなくなるよ！それがアルバム “The Legacy Of The Aztecs” の魅力だと思う！
また、僕は基本的にはベーシストなので、これまでほとんどやったことのなかったボーカリストにも自然になることができた！よく言われるように 目的が見えていれば、障害は見えなくなるものだ。
Q3: Why do you play Aztec-themed metal when you are a Ukrainian band?
【SERGIO】: I think it makes no difference where a band is from to make a quality concept and sing about ancient cultures. American Nile is not an Egyptian band either, but their music and concept of Ancient Egypt is fantastic! I think a lot of people will agree with that! We didn’t want to be another primitive and dull thrash band that sings about booze, sex, zombies, partying, social problems and other hackneyed topics. So I decided that our band needed something unusual and deep, as I love the history of the ancient world my choice fell on the culture and mythology of the Aztecs. As far as I remember there are almost no thrash bands that would use this theme, except for a couple of local bands in Mexico. The funny thing is that a lot of people think that we are a Mexican band, because according to them we have done a good job of conveying the spirit and atmosphere of the Aztecs. And when they find out that we are from Ukraine, they have a cognitive dissonance in a good way!
Q3: それにしても、なぜウクライナでアステカのメタルを始めることにしたのでしょう？
【SERGIO】: 質の高いコンセプトを持ち、古代文化について歌うバンドに出身地は関係ないと思う。アメリカの NILE もエジプトのバンドではないけど、彼らの音楽と古代エジプトのコンセプトは素晴らしいからね！多くの人がそれに同意してくれると思うよ！

Q4: What’s interesting is that you guys have successfully combined elements of folk metal with technical death metal giants like Cynic, Atheist, Death, and Pestilence. How did you come up with this idea?
【SERGIO】: We didn’t have any premeditated ideas, it just came out of our own hands! Yes, we are fans of these bands, but we don’t try to copy them on purpose, because we don’t need to. Obviously these bands have been in our DNA and subconscious for a long time, so you can hear elements of them in our music! Our main goal is always to make unique and interesting music, that’s why we sometimes use elements of folk that add atmosphere.
Q4: あなたたちが素晴らしいのは、アステカの伝統音楽を、CYNIC, ATHEIST, DEATH といったテクニカル・メタルの巨人と融合させている点ですよ！
【SERGIO】: それは前もって考えていたアイデアなどではなく、ただ自分たちの中から出てきたものなんだ！そう、もちろん僕たちはそうしたバンドのファンだけど、わざとコピーしようとはしていない。明らかに、彼らは長い間僕たちのDNAや潜在意識の中にあったものだから、自然と僕らの音楽の中に彼らの要素を聴くことができるんだ！
僕たちの主な目標は、常にユニークで面白い音楽を作ることであり、そのために雰囲気を盛り上げるフォークの要素を使っているんだよ。
Q5: You also use a lot of old Aztec instruments and percussion? How did you get them or learn them?
【SERGIO】: Unfortunately we don’t have access to real Aztec musical instruments, so we used samples and sound libraries. This was done by our former drummer, but now it is done by me and guitarist Juan Maestro. I think we might find some session musicians in the future who can collaborate with us to get a more real sound.
Q5: アステカの楽器やパーカッションも多く使用していますよね？
【SERGIO】: 残念ながら本物のアステカの楽器は手に入らないから、サンプルや音源を使ったんだ。これは以前のドラマーがやってくれていたんだけど、今は僕とギタリストの Juan Maestro がやっている。将来的には、よりリアルなサウンドを得るために協力してくれるセッション・ミュージシャンを見つけるかもしれないけどね。
Q6: What is the story told in “The Legacy of the Aztecs”?
【SERGIO】: It’s just a title as a summary of the album that I came up with. It doesn’t have any specific concept, but it unites all the songs of the album into one. Also the word “Heritage” sounds very nice, which gives a reference to our favourite Iron Maiden, and the word “Aztecs” we used to specify the direction of the band’s concept. Anyway the album title sounds epic!
Q6: “The Legacy of the Aztecs” ではどんなストーリーが語られていますか？
【SERGIO】: これは、僕が考えたんだけど、このアルバムの要約としてのタイトルなんだ。特にコンセプトはないけど、アルバムの全曲をひとつにまとめているような感じだね。
“Heritage” という言葉の響きは、僕らの大好きな IRON MAIDEN を連想させるし、”Aztecs” という言葉はバンドのコンセプトの方向性を示すために使ったんだ。いずれにせよ、アルバム・タイトルは壮大な響きだ！
Q7: What inspired the name Cosmic Jaguar?
【SERGIO】: Initially we had a different band name. but then we accidentally came across Xavier Quijas Yxayotl who had a song called Cosmic Jaguar and we decided to use that name for the band. As my friend from Mexico said, we chose a very good and powerful name because it has a deep meaning for the indigenous people of Mexico! I think that the name of our band sounds very original, as a metal band!
Q7: COSMIC JAGUAR というバンド名も、神秘的でクールですね？
【SERGIO】: 当初は別のバンド名を考えていたんだけど、偶然 Xavier Quijas Yxayotl の “Cosmic Jaguar” という曲に出会って、それをバンド名を使うことにしたんだ。メキシコ出身の友人が言っていたように、メキシコの先住民にとって深い意味を持つ、とても力強く良い名前を選んだんだ！僕たちのバンド名は、メタル・バンドとしてとても斬新に響くと思う！
Q8: These days, the potential for a breakthrough like Bloodywood’s is greater, thanks to the Internet and streaming, even in places far from the center of metal. But that folk element seems essential, would you agree?
【SERGIO】: Yeah, you’re totally right! It’s very hard to be original nowadays, because there’s a lot of competition and there’s a lot of crap music coming out, where your art can get lost amongst it. That’s why we try to do something new and interesting in thrash, in order to give the listener something original and unique. I think we are on the right way!
Q8: 最近は、インターネットやSNSの発達によって、BLOODYWOOD のようなメタルの中心地から離れたバンドでもビッグになれる時代です。
【SERGIO】: そうだね！だけど同時に、現代は競争が激しいし、くだらない音楽がたくさん出てくるから、オリジナリティを出すのはとても難しい。アートが迷子になりやすいんだ。だから僕たちは、スラッシュで何か新しいこと、面白いことをやろうとしているんだ。僕らは正しい道を歩んでいると思う！
FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED SERGIO’S LIFE!!
IRON MAIDEN “Killers”
That record changed me once and for all. It made me want to be a bass player. The first thing I fell in love with on this album was the killer cover. When I turned 19, I got a tattoo of Killers! Also, thanks to “Murders in the Rue Morgue” I discovered the work of Edgar Alan Poe, who has influenced my personality and the music of Bestial Invasion. Steve Harris to me is a real musician’s example and I always look up to him. It’s my favorite Iron Maiden album and always in my heart!
このレコードが僕を一変させた。ベーシストになりたいと思わせてくれた。このアルバムで最初に好きになったのは、ジャケットだったよ。19歳になった時、”Killers” のタトゥーを入れたくらいにね！また、”Murder in the Rue Mouge” のおかげでエドガー・アラン・ポーの作品に出会い、彼は僕の人格と Bestial Invasion の音楽に影響を与えた。スティーブ・ハリスは僕にとって真のミュージシャンのお手本であり、いつも尊敬しているよ。メイデンのアルバムの中で一番好きで、いつも心の中にある！
RAVEN “Wiped Out”
Raven for me is on a par with Iron Maiden. It’s a very important band for me. I was blown away by the energy of “Live at the Inferno” from this album the first time I heard it. There is just unbelievable bass guitar work, which for me is the benchmark of insanity! Even after almost 20 years, I still get goosebumps from this album. It’s a very personal album for me. The Gallagher brothers rule!
僕にとっての RAVEN は、アイアン・メイデンと肩を並べる存在だ。僕にとってとても重要なバンドだ。このアルバムの “Live at the Inferno” を初めて聴いた時、そのエネルギーに圧倒された。信じられないようなベース・ギター・ワークがあり、僕にとっては狂気の基準だ！20年近く経った今でも、このアルバムを聴くと鳥肌が立つ。僕にとってとても個人的なアルバムだ。ギャラガー兄弟は偉大だ！
MP “Bursting Out (The Beast Became Human)”
One of the first speed metal albums I heard in high school. I was a die-hard Motörhead and Accept fan and liked it immediately. It’s also a very personal album for me, because it was the one that got me into thrash (I also got my nickname Metal Priest thanks to this band because I listened to this album 24/7 and raved about it.). I know every note and rustle of this record. It’s probably the album I’ve listened to the most times in my life!
高校生の時に初めて聴いたスピード・メタルのアルバムのひとつ。Motörheadと ACCEPT の熱狂的なファンだった僕は、すぐにこのアルバムを気に入った。スラッシュにのめり込むきっかけとなったアルバムなので、僕にとってはとても個人的なアルバムでもある24時間365日このアルバムを聴いて絶賛していたのでついた、メタル・プリーストというニックネームもこのバンドのおかげだ。このアルバムのすべての音とざわめきを知っている。おそらく人生で最も多く聴いたアルバムだろう！
CARNIVORE “Retaliation”
I also heard this universal evil at school. I was amazed at the aggression and despair. The lyrics made my hair stand on end. It was so provocative that it was even more addictive. Sex, religion, end of the world, mental illness, social inequality… A killer mix of thrash, crossover and hardcore. I really like the sound of Peter’s bass. I have the album cover on my right shoulder. It’s an album for all ages!
この普遍的な悪も学校で聴いた。攻撃性と絶望感に驚いたよ。歌詞に身の毛がよだつ。とても挑発的で、さらに中毒性があった。セックス、宗教、世界の終わり、精神病、社会的不平等…。スラッシュ、クロスオーバー、ハードコアのキラー・ミックス。ピーターのベースの音が本当に好きだ。僕はこのアルバムのジャケットを右肩に彫っている。全年齢向けのアルバムだ！
ATHEIST “Unquestionable Presence”
This album changed my musical thinking as a bass guitarist and composer. From the album cover to the last note of the album this is a flawless and fantastic album. I when I first heard the song Formative Years I was just shocked by the rhythm section which was insane! I was also amazed by the bass guitar playing of Tony Choi who did an unreal job. I adopted a lot of his stuff from this album. This album is so important to me that I even have a tattoo on my arm with the cover of Unquestionable Presence!
このアルバムは、ベース・ギタリスト、作曲家としての僕の音楽的思考を変えた。アルバムのジャケットから最後の一音まで、完璧で素晴らしいアルバムだ。”Formative Years” という曲を初めて聴いたとき、そのリズム・セクションの狂気にただただ衝撃を受けた！トニー・チョイのベース・プレイにも驚かされた。僕はこのアルバムから彼の味をたくさん取り入れた。このアルバムは僕にとってとても重要で、腕には “Unquestionable Presence” のジャケットのタトゥーを入れているほどだ！
