DISC REVIEW “APEWOMAN VS TURBO”
「マス・ロックとプログ・メタル。そのふたつのジャンルは似たような方向に進むことができるけど、本当に違う世界から来たものだから、実際はお互いに出会うことはあまりないんだよね。僕らのプロジェクトは、DREAM THEATER や HAKEN ようなプログ・メタルの大ファンで、でもマス・ロックを作りたかったから、その両方を組み合わせることにしたんだよ」
マス・ロックとプログ・メタル。両者共に、複雑怪奇な奇数拍子と難解なテクニックを心臓としながらも、決して交わることのなかったジャンルたち。それはきっと、エモ/スクリーモとメタルという大きく離れた場所から進化をとげてきたせいでしょう。しかし、フランスのウォンバットとエイプウーマンは、ユーモアでその壁をとりはらいます。
「僕はいつも不思議だったんだ。マス・ロックは当然、プログレッシブで面白いことを期待していた（そしてそれを望んでいた）のだけど、実際にはシリアスでエモい側面が、僕が思っていたよりもずっとシーンで優勢であることを知って驚いたね」
おそらく、マス・ロックとプログ・メタル最大のちがいは、音楽的な “深刻さ” である。そう信じていたウォンバットこと Lulu は、実際のマス・ロックシーンのシリアスさに驚き、違和感を感じます。同じくらいシリアスなら、大好きなマス・ロックとプログ・メタルが出会わない手はない。しかも、そこにユーモアやハッピーな感情を織り込んだらどうなるんだろう？そこから、WOMBAT SUPERNOVA の冒険がはじまりました。
「僕はいつも任天堂の大ファンボーイで、僕らの音楽はマリオカートのサウンドトラックにすごく影響を受けていると思う。全体的にはちょっと微妙なんだけど、”Bertrand” のコーラスのようにはっきりわかることもある。僕ら2人とも、大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ・アルティメットとそのOSTの大ファンでもあるんだ」
“Bertrand” は、まさにそんな “最高にキュートで、最高にハッピーで、最高におマヌケなマス・ロック” を標榜する彼らを象徴するような楽曲。ハイパーなイントロのタッピング・リフに、MESHUGGAH も顔負けのブレイクダウン。そのふたつをつなぐのが、感染力増し増しのアニメチックで爽快なメロディなのですから、前代未聞のマスプログハッピーミュージックはとどまるところをしりません。
「どうやら僕らの音楽のおかげで、暗いことがあっても楽しくハッピーな気分で生活できるようになったみたいなんだ。このプロジェクトは、以前は僕らが楽しむために作ったものだったけど、もしこのプロジェクトがみんなに良いバイブスを与えることができたなら、僕たちは本当に嬉しいよ」
音楽は、それがネガティブな感情であれ、ポジティブな感情であれ、リスナーの心に寄り添うもの。そうして、リスナーの心の壁を溶かしたウォンバットは、カントリーからジャズ、そして場違いなブラストビートの連打までカオティックに音楽で未曾有のサーカスを演じ続け、ジャンルの壁をも溶かしていくのです。
今回弊誌では、WOMBAT SUPERNOVA にインタビューを行うことができました。”バンドのアイデンティティにウォンバットを選んだのは、かわいい動物だし、小さなキャラクターだし、その中の一匹が “ベルトラン” (明るくてかわいくて賢い) だったから” どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH WOMBAT SUPERNOVA
Q1:1. First of all, can you tell us how Wombat Supernova was formed?
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: Lulu and I have been making music together for nearly a decade now, so we always played random stuff. We can not remember how this idea came to us lol
【LULU “TURBO”】: Lulu “Turbo” : While other projects were in the works, we decided to make the cutest, happiest and dumbest math-rock project possible.
Q1: まず最初に、WOMBAT SUPERNOVA 結成の経緯から教えていただけますか？
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: 僕と Lulu はもう10年近く一緒に音楽を作っているから、いつも思うがままに曲を作っていたんだ。だから、どうしてこのアイデアが浮かんだのかさえ覚えていないんだ(笑)
【LULU “TURBO”】: そうして他のプロジェクトが進行する中、僕たちは最高にキュートで、最高にハッピーで、最高におマヌケなマスロック・プロジェクトを作ることに決めたんだ。
Q2: Why is Turbo fighting Apewoman? Who is the Wombat ?
【LULU “TURBO”】: We chose wombats for our band identity because they’re cute animals, they’re little characters and one of them is “bertrand”.
【MARS “APEWOMAN】: The sentence “Apewoman VS Turbo” is an anagram of “Wombat Supernova”, that’s how we found the album name and our characters.
Q2: Turbo はなぜ Apewoman と戦っているのでしょうか？彼らは何者なんですか？
【LULU “TURBO”】: バンドのアイデンティティにウォンバットを選んだのは、かわいい動物だし、小さなキャラクターだし、その中の一匹が “ベルトラン” (明るくてかわいくて賢い) だったから。
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: 実は、”Apewoman VS Turbo” というタイトルは “Wombat Supernova” のアナグラムで、それでアルバム名とキャラクターを決めたんだ。
Q3: Can Turbo and Apewoman play many different instruments, not just guitar?
【LULU “TURBO”】: We can both play many different instruments, including the ones on the album, but we wanted to make a guitar-driven album with this project so we’re introducing ourselves as guitarists.
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: We programmed the drums together and played the bass alternatively on the album, depending of the sections we wanted to record.
Q3: Turbo と Apewoman はギターだけでなく、様々な楽器を演奏できるのでしょうか？
【LULU “TURBO”】: 2人ともアルバムに収録されている楽器を含め、様々な楽器を演奏することができるけど、今回のプロジェクトではギター主体のアルバムを作りたかったから、ギタリストとして自己紹介しているんだ。
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: ドラムは一緒にプログラミングしたし、ベースは録音したいセクションによって交互に演奏したね。
Q4: Still, “Apewoman VS Turbo” is a great album! It’s one of my personal best of the year! In fact, your music is a perfect mix of math rock like Chon and prog metal like Animals As Leaders, with a more diverse playfulness hidden inside. Prog and math rock seem to be close genres, but in fact they have never really intersected, have they?
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: Indeed, it always seemed weird to me because naturally I would have expected (and wanted) mathrock to be proggy and goofy, and I discovered that in fact the serious and emo side was waaaaaay more predominant in the scene than I thought.
【LULU “TURBO”】: These genres can go in similar directions but as they come from really different worlds, they’re not really meeting each other that often. Our project is a combination of both because we’re really big fans of prog metal such as Dream Theater or Haken and we wanted to make mathrock.
Q4: それにしても “Apewoman VS Turbo” は素晴らしいアルバムですね！個人的に今年のベスト作品のひとつです！実際、あなたたちの音楽は、CHON のようなマス・ロックと ANIMALS AS LEADERS のようなプログ・メタルの完璧なミックスで、そこにさらに多様な遊び心が秘められています。プログ・メタルとマス・ロックは近いジャンルのように思えますが、実際にはこれまで交わることがほとんどありませんでしたよね？
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: そうだね。それが僕はいつも不思議だったんだ。マス・ロックは当然、プログレッシブで面白いことを期待していた（そしてそれを望んでいた）のだけど、実際にはシリアスでエモい側面が、僕が思っていたよりもずっとシーンで優勢であることを知って驚いたね。

Q5: “Bertrand” was a surprise to me. It is such a technical and complex piece with a melody that sounds like an anime theme! Are you actually influenced by Japanese anime, games, or music?
【LULU “TURBO”】: I don’t watch a lot of anime or play a lot of games like my friends, but I’m very invested in many different genres of music from Japan! So it has a big influence on the music I write. I’m going to Japan again this summer for holidays, but hopefully one day I’ll come to play concerts!
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: I’ve always been a big Nintendo fanboy, and I guess our music is really influenced by Mario Kart soundtracks, it’s overall kinda subtle, but sometimes it’s really obvious like that chorus in “bertrand” ; We’re also both big fans of Super Smash Bros Ultimate and its OST. Anime-wise I don’t watch much, but we’ve still seen Pop Team Epic together and I think it has a Wombat Supernova vibe in the goofy and absurdly random side. I also personally used to listen to some japanese bands back in highschool, like Uplift Spice or Maximum The Hormone.
Q5: “Bertrand” はおどろきでした！アニメのテーマのようなメロディーを持ちながら、とてもテクニカルで複雑な楽曲ですね！日本のアニメやゲーム、音楽から影響を受けているのですか？
【LULU “TURBO”】: 友達のようにアニメをたくさん見たり、ゲームをたくさんやったりはしないけど、日本の様々なジャンルの音楽にはとても入れ込んでいるよ！だから、僕が書く音楽にも大きな影響を与えている。今年の夏も休暇で日本に行く予定だけど、いつかコンサートで行けたらいいな！

アニメはあまり見ないけど、ポプテピピック (ポップチーム・エピック) は一緒に見たことがあるよ。あと、個人的には高校生の頃に日本のバンドをよく聴いていて、Uplift Spice とか Maximum The Hormoneとかよく聴いていたね。
Q6: One thing that Japanese anime and your music have in common is a brilliant contrast between humor and seriousness, would you agree?
【BOTH】: Yes! Indeed!
Q6: 日本のアニメとあなたの音楽に共通しているのは、ユーモアとシリアスの見事なコントラストだと思いますが？
【BOTH】: まさに、その通り！！
Q7: With Covid, war, and division, the world has been getting darker and darker since the beginning of the 20s. For the marginalized and oppressed people, humor and fantasy seems to be a great escape. And this record seems to be perfect for escapism, right?
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: We had a lot of really heart-warming feedback since the album came out, and some of it has been from people who were going through hard things. Apparently our music helped them to keep having fun and a happy mood in their life despite the dark stuff that could be going on. This project was before all created for us to have fun, but if it can give all these good vibes to people, we’re really happy it does !
Q7: ユーモアといえば、パンデミック、戦争、分断など、20年代の初めから世界はどんどん暗くなっています。社会から疎外され、抑圧された人々にとって、ユーモアやファンタジーは逃避場所となるようです。そしてこのレコードは、その逃避場所にうってつけのようですね？
【MARS “APEWOMAN”】: アルバムが発売されて以来、本当に心温まるフィードバックをたくさんもらった。どうやら僕らの音楽のおかげで、暗いことがあっても楽しくハッピーな気分で生活できるようになったみたいなんだ。このプロジェクトは、以前は僕らが楽しむために作ったものだったけど、もしこのプロジェクトがみんなに良いバイブスを与えることができたなら、僕たちは本当に嬉しいよ！
Q8: Today, it is really easy to study guitar and music, for better or worse, through social networking, streaming, and video sites. Do you have any advice for young guitarists living in such an era?
【LULU “TURBO”】: The problem is that everyone on the internet is fighting for your attention, so there is a lot of fast content with no value. My advice is to make sure to know what music you like, keep practicing full songs of bands you love, and only search for advice or lessons if there is something you love but can’t play. Stay focused!
Q8: 現在、SNSやストリーミング、動画サイトなどを通じて、良くも悪くもギターや音楽を学ぶことが本当に手軽でインスタントにできるようになりました。そんな時代に生きる若いギタリストにアドバイスはありますか？
【LULU “TURBO”】: 問題なのは、インターネット上のすべての人が誰かの注意を引くために争っていることで、価値のないファストなコンテンツがたくさんある。アドバイスとしては、自分の好きな音楽をしっかり把握すること。好きなバンドの曲をフルで練習し続けること。好きだけど弾けないものがあるときだけ、アドバイスやレッスンを探すこと。大事なのは、目標を定めて集中し続けることだよ！
