LEGENDARY ex-GENESIS GUITARIST MR. STEVE HACKETT TALKS ABOUT HIS UPCOMING ALBUM “WOLFLIGHT”, AND MORE !!

NEW SONG !! “THE WHEEL’S TURNING”

“WOLFLIGHT” RATING: 9,5 /10

【ABOUT “WOLFLIGHT”】

ste11059240_10152777991063590_3688946042521006140_n

Q1: Thanks a lot for giving us such a great opportunity !! I think “Wolflight” is one of the best album in your works. It’s really genre breaking. There is no rules and it’s so eclectic. Is “Eclectic” your target or goal of “Wolflight”?

【STEVE】: I’m glad you like the album. “Eclectic” is not so much a rule as the way I develop music. I’m fascinated by many musical genres and I feel the need to explore as many areas as possible. I like the contrast between different types of songs and I also enjoy combining genres within many of the tracks.

Q2: We know you have really gotten into world music. And we can listen to the elements again this time. Tar (from Azerbaijan), an Arabian oud (lute), a duduk (Armenina woodwind instrument) are used in “Wolflight”. They are very rare music and instruments for us. How did you know them? And what’s the attraction?

【STEVE】: I feel these instruments express the soul of the places they come from and many of them transport us thousands of years back in time. Malik Mansurov who plays the tar on the title track of the album lives in Azerbaijan and the music he plays on this extraordinary ancient instrument has been influenced by nomadic tribes going back thousands of years. The word tar means ‘gut’, a root word for instruments like guitar and sitar. When I was in Morocco I was inspired by the Arabian oud, which for me was the heartbeat of the desert. I then bought an Iraqi oud which I play on the track ‘Dust and Dreams’. The duduk has a wonderful mystical sound, perfect for depicting the wild mysteries and rites in the extraordinary magical and erie Corycian Cave.

Q3: Especially, I think “Wolflight” focuses on arabic elements. Does “Wolflight” have a story or concept related on Arab?

【STEVE】: The title track ‘Wolflight’ is essentially about the wild horsemen who roamed the Siberian wastes, Mongolia and the Steppes for thousands of years, defying all the civilisations, from China to Persia to Rome. There is much in common between their music and that of the Nomadic Berbers of North Africa. The heartbeat of the nomads runs beneath the surface of much of the music we see as Arabic. Beneath the tar at the beginning is an Australian Aboriginal digeridoo, with a sense of the primitive nature of the nomadic tribes. ‘Dust and Dreams’ directly links to the Arabic / desert atmosphere.

Q4: “Wolflight” has many layers of orchestration like Stravinsky. It’s awesome for guitar plays the part of orchestra!! And also it has Hard Rock edges and strong energy, emotions more than in your recent works. Do you agree that? If so, why?

【STEVE】: Yes, I enjoy creating a cinematic effect, which conveys a combination of feelings and atmospheres through linking genres. I love the power of combined electric guitar and orchestra. I also enjoy the contrast between the quiet, reflective moments and the full on energetic sounds.

Q5: Chris Squire of Yes played bass in “Wolflight”. Off course, you and Chris made “A Life Within a Day” as Squackett. What’s Chris to you?

【STEVE】: Chris is a brilliant bass player. His sound is distinctive. He really feels every note he plays and moves as if he is a part of the instrument. The bass is in his soul. We’re good mates and we always enjoy working together when it’s possible.

【STEVE】: CHRIS

Q6: Your last album is “Genesis Revisited Ⅱ”. (very succeeded!!) And “Genesis: Together and Apart” are attracted by lots of music fans. Anyway, what do you think about Genesis Reunion? Do you want to make one more album with them?

【STEVE】: I would always be open to a reunion, but at present it looks unlikely that it will happen. Down the line though, who knows?

Q7: Except for “Wolflight”, Which albums and songs are you most proud of in your works?

【STEVE】: I was always very proud of Spectral Mornings. It was a joy to record and I still love to listen to it. For me it has a great atmosphere.

【STEVE】: “SPECTRAL MORNINGS”

【TRACK BY TRACK IN HACKETT’S WORDS】

ste1511287_10151909492533590_413516823_n

‘OUT OF THE BODY’
“It begins with wolves baying, as a wolf cry becomes the first note. Then the music explodes into life, with all the wild creatures leaping into the vortex. It’s like an overture in part, echoing themes on the album but with its own dynamic. The track is monstrous and free, building to a climax.”
‘OUT OF THE BODY’

‘WOLFLIGHT’
“Introducing the song are the exotic strains of the tar, which gives a sense of the wilderness stretching thousands of miles from Mongolia to the Carpathians, and also of the ancient nomadic horsemen that travelled across those wastes. These people could be terrifying. The Chinese built the Great Wall Of China to keep them out, and they brought down the Roman Empire. But they fought for the freedom to roam and had a powerful spirit. At one with the elements and the earth, they were shamanic. The wolf was their totem. They were agents of chaos, but influenced and linked all cultures from the Far East right through to Europe.”
‘WOLFLIGHT’

‘LOVE SONG TO A VAMPIRE’
“A story of a love that begins with great promise, but turns into a nightmare. The vampire is an abusive partner, who drains her victim of energy and self esteem, thereby ensuring ultimate control. Vampires are great metaphors for abusive relationships. There’s a lot of dark stuff often hidden behind a benign and often glamorous exterior. Beware the vampire who conceals those teeth when you first meet. Here, the verse which has a personal vibe contrasting with the big chorus, followed by powerful guitar and a Slavic orchestral atmosphere. This echoes the ancient idea of the vampire.”
‘LOVE SONG TO VAMPIRE’

‘THE WHEEL’S TURNING’
“A distant, but incredible memory that can still return in my sleep like the genie bursting out of Aladdin’s lamp. Battersea Funfair was my creative wonder world as a child. Many of the latest musical hits at the time were its soundtrack, and it had that great mixture of colour and challenge. From things that frightened you rigid ,like the grotto or the devil riders, to that sense of complete joy, flying through the air to the strains of music. From elation to nostalgia to spook. This song runs the gamut of all the emotions I feel about that long gone world, one that can now only exist in the land of dreams.”
‘THE WHEEL’S TURNING’

‘CORYCIAN FIRE’
“This song begins with a strange sense of suspense, through a haunting harp and duduk. We’re transported back to the primal, wild side of the Ancient Greek world, where women climbed the craggy slopes of Mount Parnassus with burning torches, to invoke and awaken the god Dionysos from the dead deep inside the mountain in the Corycian cavern. The original oracle of Delphi is believed to have been in this cave before Delphi began, and an ancient path links the two places, as Delphi linked the two gods Dionysus and Apollo, dark and light, death and life. My wife Jo and I felt like Indiana Jones style explorers finding this remote cave. It’s the spookiest place I’ve ever seen, and one of the most intriguing. There’s a strange spiritual presence in there and you can see faces everywhere.”
“CORYCIAN FIRE”

‘EARTHSHINE’
“This acoustic guitar piece begins with the ‘Corycian Fire’ refrain. but swiftly moves to lighter pastures. As I composed it, I could see the sun enveloping the earth in a loving embrace. The universal becomes personal.”
‘EARTHSHINE’

‘LOVING SEA’
“We’re transported right back here to the vibe of the late 60s. Carefree joy and colour in sunshine, bathed in the surf and spray of the sea. This song came to me on holiday with Jo in Mexico, when we took a speedboat into a lagoon amidst dolphins and turtles, and then out through mangroves to the ocean. We were on such a high. At one with the pulse of life!”
LOVING SEA’

‘BLACK THUNDER’
A slave rebellion from days gone by, in the Deep South of the States. I’ve always been appalled by all the stories of the conditions people suffered. Visits to both the slavery museum in Liverpool, and Martin Luther King Center For Non-Violent Social Change in Atlanta brought home the horror and the long struggle. The fight for freedom with the birth of black music is woven into this song.”
‘BLACK THUNDER’

DUST AND DREAMS
“This is heralded by the Arabian oud, which is the sound of the desert. I was inspired by the music I heard in Morocco and the desert that stretched out beyond the mountains. It has the sense of a journey across the sandy wastes, steady, searching, seductive, walking through mirages. It then morphs into an electric guitar flight, as if soaring over huge expanses in a dream-like state, encountering the beauty and wonder of the wilderness, but also hinting at the terror of war-torn places, with extremists hiding within those wild expanses.”
DUST AND DREAMS

‘HEART SONG’
“The previous track morphs into this one. It’s a resolution in a loving embrace. This song is dedicated to my wife Jo: from a dream of hope to the transforming power of love.”
‘HEART SONG’
