以前弊誌で取り上げ大反響を得た US 産モダンプログバンド NATIVE CONSTRUCT。そのデビューアルバム “QUIET WORLD” が遂にリリースされました。先行曲 “MUTE” が名曲過ぎた為、他の楽曲がどうなのか危惧していましたがそれは全くの杞憂でした。デビュー作とは思えない程に洗練されていて同時に新鮮。地球上のあらゆる音楽を詰め込んだのではと思える程にエクレクティックで実験的なのにキャッチーで耳を捉えて離しません。壮大なコンセプトアルバムはバークリー出身者としての音楽的高みを見せつけた内容に仕上がっています。その繊細で幾重にも折り重なるコーラスワークは QUEEN, ひいては以前インタビューを行った A.C.T. を想起させる部分もありますね。METAL BLADE というビッグディティールを獲得したこともあり US でのチャートアクションも極めて良好、内容も素晴らしく、5/20にはボートラを加えて MARQUEE/AVALON から日本盤の発売も決定とあらば直撃する他ありません。彼らの驚異的なテクニック、楽曲構成は BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME からの影響が指摘されていますが、今回のインタビューで意外な繋がりを知る事が出来ました。新世代ギターヒーロー、MYLES YANG です！！

Q1: Your debut album “Quiet World” is just released !! How are you feeling now and how are the reactions?
【MYLES】: The reception has been much larger and more positive than we ever imagined! We’re feeling great.
Q1: デビューアルバム “QUIET WORLD” がリリースされましたね！！反響はいかがですか？
【 MYLES 】: 反響はとても大きくて想像していたよりとてもポジティブだよ。最高の気持ちさ！
Q2: This is our first interview with you. So at first, would you tell us about Native Construct? How did the band start? What is origin of the band name “Native Construct”?
【 MYLES 】: Native Construct started out as a passion project between a handful of 1st semester students at Berklee College of Music in September of 2011. As a kid coming to Berklee fresh out of high school, you find yourself in a strange situation where you’re suddenly completely surrounded by similarly aged people who are as excited about music as you are. It’s a bizarre experience. The natural reaction is to jam. A lot. And with lots of different people. So jam we did. And as you do this, you naturally gravitate towards the people who are doing things that align with your own interests. Native Construct was born of this process. The band name was intentionally made to be a bit ambiguous. It definitely has a specific meaning to us, but we’d prefer to keep a dignified silence about our personal interpretation and let people find their own meaning in it.
Q2: まずはバンドについて聞かせて下さい。NATIVE CONSTRUCT はどのように始まったのですか？バンド名の由来も教えて下さい。
【 MYLES 】: NATIVE CONSTRUCT は 2011年の9月にバークリー音楽大学１年生の人握りの生徒たちによって情熱を持って作られたんだ。高校を卒業したばかりのガキがバークリーに入学すると変わったシチュエーションに置かれている事に気づく。突然、自分のような音楽にエキサイトしている同い年くらいの人達に完全に囲まれる訳だからね。自然にジャムろうという流れになるね。沢山。色んな人たちとね。だから僕たちもジャムったんだ。志や興味を同じくする人に惹かれていくのは自然な事だよね。そうやって NATIVE CONSTRUCT は誕生したんだよ。バンドの名前は意図的に多義なものにしたんだ。僕たちにとっては完全に特別な意味を持つんだけど、個人的な解釈については沈黙を貫きたいね。ファンがそれぞれの意味を見つけられるようにさ。
Q3: It took so long releasing debut album. But you could contract with Metal Blade Records! Would you tell us about the circumstance?
【 MYLES 】: By far the greatest challenge of making Quiet World was the fact that we were full time students at music school during the entire process. Getting through the super involved writing and recording processes while balancing heavy course loads was very much a struggle. There was never nearly enough time in the day to do everything we wanted to do. Since there were immediate deadlines for our school work, whereas Native Construct was just a personal passion project, the band ended up having to take a back seat and be put on hold many times. This, combined with our fancifully elaborate vision for the album and our nearly-nonexistent college student budget, meant it took us much longer to get the album done than we initially thought it would, but we’re really glad we took our time with it and gave it our best effort. After the album was completely finished, we began searching for a record label to release it with. It turns out luck was on our side during this process. Tommy Rogers from Between the Buried and Me heard our music and liked it enough that he offered to do us the very kind favor of helping us shop the album around to labels. He was able to get us in contact with Metal Blade Records, and we went from there.
Q3: “QUIET WORLD” のリリースには長い時間を要しましたね。同時に METAL BLADE というビッグレーベルからリリースする事になった訳ですが。経緯を教えて下さい。
【 MYLES 】: “QUIET WORLD” の制作は大きなチャレンジだったよ。というのも僕たちはフルタイムの学生をやりながら全てのプロセスをこなした訳だからね。だから学業という重荷を背負いながら作曲やレコーディングのプロセスをバランスをとってこなすのは戦いだったよ。１日のうち僕たちがやりたい事全てをこなす時間なんて全くないに等しかったね。すぐに宿題の期限が迫ってくるんだから。NATIVE CONSTRUCT は個人的なプロジェクトだから何度も棚上せざるを得なかった。入念で手が込んだアルバムに対するビジョンと、学生故の予算のなさで当初予定していたより随分と時間がかかってしまったんだ。ただこのアルバムに時間と最高の努力を注ぐ事が出来て嬉しいよ。アルバムが完成した後、僕たちはレコードレーベルを探し始めた。明らかにその過程では僕たちにツキがあったよ。BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME の TOMMY ROGERS が僕たちの音楽を聴いてとても気に入ってくれたんだ。そして親切な事にレーベルを探す手伝いをしてくれると申し出てくれたんだよ。彼は METAL BLADE とコンタクトを取ることが出来たから僕たちは契約出来たんだ。
Q4: Anyway, let’s talk about “Quiet World”. It’s really awesome. Magnificent, beautiful, technical, emotional, and storytelling. Also artwork is so impressive! I read press release, and it seems the story about “QUIET MAN” and his world. Would you tell us about that?
【 MYLES 】: It’s actually about a man who can’t speak. He convinces himself that his abnormality makes him unlovable, and eventually retreats to a new world of which he has complete control — a much quieter and less diverse world where there are no misfits. The rest of the album unfolds within this new world. That’s the basic premise of the record. As for the rest of the details, we’ll say no more! Some of the greatest pleasures of music appreciation are derived from personal interpretation and the search for meaning in the music. We wouldn’t want to deprive our listeners of this by giving too much away.
Q4: では “QUIET WORLD” について話しましょう。素晴らしく、際立っていて、美しく、テクニカルで、エモーショナル。物語を紡ぐようなアルバムですね。アートワークも印象的ですがアルバムのストーリーを教えてもらえますか？
【 MYLES 】: 話す事の出来ない男についての話なんだ。彼は自分が愛されないのはアブノーマルな性格のせいだと信じている。そして遂には彼が完全にコントロールできる-より静かで多様性の少ない-世界を作ろうとするんだ。環境に順応出来ない人がいないようなね。残りのアルバムではその新世界が展開されるよ。これはアルバムの大筋なんだけど、詳細についてはこれ以上話さないよ！音楽鑑賞の真の楽しみは個人的な解釈と意味の探求だと思うんだ。僕たちはリスナーからあまり多くの楽しみを奪いたくないんだよ。
Q5: So, when I shared your music to Japanese listeners, lot’s of people referred to the influences from “Between the Buried and Me” and “Queen”. Off course, BTBAM covered Queen’s songs. What is these two band to you?
【 MYLES 】: It’s a fair comparison. Queen and Between the Buried and Me have certainly both been significant influences for us. I’m sure Quiet World would be a very different album had we not been exposed to their music.
Q5: あなたたちの音楽を日本のリスナーにシェアした時、QUEEN と BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME の影響が感じられるという声が多かったのですが、それについてはどう思いますか？
【 MYLES 】: 公平な比較だと思うよ。QUEEN と BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME は2バンドとも僕たちに重要な影響を与えているからね。勿論 “QUIET WORLD” は彼らのアルバムとは全く違っているんだけど影響は現れているね。
Q6: Speaking of BTBAM, Jamie King did mastering of “Quiet world”. What did he bring to this album?
【 MYLES 】: Yes, we worked closely with Jamie to get the mastering just right for this album. Our music is fairly dynamic, and we really wanted to preserve that natural energy in the recording. You’ll notice that the record is overall a bit quieter than most modern releases. We took this hit in the loudness war in favor of letting the music really breathe. Jamie did a great job with it.
Q6: BTBAM と言えば、彼らのアルバムも手掛けている JAMIE KING が “QUIET WORLD” のマスタリングを行っていますね。
【 MYLES 】: うん。僕たちはこのアルバムが正しい方向に向うよう、JAMIE とは緊密に仕事をしたんだ。僕たちの音楽はかなりダイナミックだから、その自然なエナジーをアルバムでも本当に保ちたかった。このレコードはモダンな他のアルバムに比べて音が少し静かな事に気づくかもしれないね。僕たちは最近の”ラウドネス ウォー”に加わるよりも音楽が息を出来るようにしたかったんだ。JAMIE は良い仕事をしてくれたよ。
Q7: Also, I could listen to the influences from Classical, World music, Opera, Sound track of movie, Game music, Djent, etc・・・What do you think about that? Is “Eclectic” important for you?
【 MYLES 】: Sure, there’s undoubtedly some of all of those things in here. We never specifically set out to be “eclectic,” but we did set out to be free. We wanted to tell this story using any tool at our disposal, without worrying about limiting ourselves in any way. It’s all about serving the drama. I guess the eclectic thing naturally occurs given this mindset.
Q7: クラッシック、ワールドミュージック、ゲーム音楽、オペラ、サウンドトラック、DJENT といった多岐に渡る影響が感じられるアルバムですが、エクレクティックという単語はあたなたにとって重要ですか？
【 MYLES 】: 勿論、疑いようもなく、それら全てから少しづつの影響はあるね。特別エクレクティックである事を提示したりはしないけど自由ではありたいね。限界を心配などせずに、どんな道具もなるべく使用せずにこのストーリーを伝えたかったんだ。このドラマのために全てを注いだんだ。そういった考えの延長がエクレクティックだったんだと思う。

【 MYLES 】: J.S. Bach, Maurice Ravel, Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Koji Kondo, Marco Minnemann, Guthrie Govan, The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, and Between the Buried and Me, among many others.

Japan is by far the country we’re most excited to tour in, so hopefully we’ll see you all soon!
