突如現れたスーパーグループ。シベリアンメタルの体現者 PETER G. SHALLMIN がKING DIAMOND の MIKE WEAD, UNEVEN STRUCTURE の MATTHIEU ROMARIN, そして PRIMUS の TIM ALEXANDER という「えっ？どうやって集めたんですか？」なメンバーを集めてデビュー作 ‘ALL YOU WANT TO’ をリリースしました。各自所属バンドの音楽性とは少し異なったオルタナ方面の楽曲群ですが演奏には各々の個性が炸裂していて良いアルバムだと思います。どうやって集めたのか PETER G. SHALLMIN に話が聞けました。インタヴューです。どうぞ。

Q1: This is our first interview with you. So please introduce yourself and musical upgringing to Japanese fans.
【PETER】: Greetings from far Siberia! Here’s Peter of ESCAPETHECULT! Thank you, dear Sin, for this special moment and great opportunity, we are happy to be introduced to a Japan audience!
Q1: 初めてのインタヴューです。日本のファンに自己紹介をお願いします。
【PETER】: シベリアからこんにちは！シベリア超特急ことESCAPETHECULT のPETER だよ。日本のファンに紹介して貰うことが出来て最高だよ、ありがとう！
Q2: ESCAPETHECULT is absolutely Super group. How can you get them together?
【PETER】: Internet technology and my luck! I’m kinda fortunate person indeed. Tim Alexander was and is my hero, a favorite musician that I dream through many years to play together one day. I sent him e-mail and was so excited to get his prompt reply. He is my very first blessing for this project. I’d say more if he didn’t accept my project it will not be happen. Mike Wead is another one musician I sincere admire and value so high. He is my long-time partner in KAMLATH, from the very beginning of our project he stays with me and I was happy that he has agreed to handle all lead / solo duties on the album. I considered finding another one guitarist for the riff parts and of course a vocalist. It was a long way – started in 2008 and through these 5 years I’ve tried to find the right person. There were numerous attempts with different guitarists and vocalists all over the world… I’m trying to count but seem there were around 20 musicians or even more. No success to find the right rhythm guitarist has forced me to compose and to demo it by myself. Finally I’ve found the vocalist in France, a true gifted spirit – Matthieu Romarin of UNEVEN STRUCTURE and it was the blessing in disguise. He is a blast! His charisma in vocal lines and harmonies has turned into absolutely unexpected direction with more power and expression.
Q2: 凄いメンバーが集まりましたね。「えっ？どうやって集めたんですか？」
【PETER】: インターネットと僕の運だね。実際僕はツイてると思うよ。TIM ALEXANDER は僕のヒーローだったし今もそうだ。いつか一緒にプレイしたいと何年も夢見ていた憧れのミュージシャン。彼にメールを送ってすぐに返事を貰えた時は興奮したね。彼の参加はこのプロジェクトにとって最初の幸運だったし彼がオファーを受けてくれなかったらこのプロジェクトは存在しなかったとさえ言えるだろうね。MIKE WEAD も心から賞賛出来る価値の高いミュージシャンだね。彼とはKAMLATH で長い間一緒にやっているしこのプロジェクトも最初から参加してくれている。全てのリフとソロを弾いてくれて嬉しいよ。二人の参加が決まって考えたんだ。あとリフを弾いてくれるギタリストと勿論ボーカルが必要だなって。それからの道のりが長かったね。2008年に始まって5年は試行錯誤を繰り返したよ。何人も世界中のギタリストとボーカルを試したんだ。数えてないけど20人かそれ以上試したんじゃないかな。結局リズムギタリストは見つからなかったから一人で作曲とデモ製作を一人でやらなければならなかったんだ。ボーカルは最終的にフランスで見つけることが出来た。UNEVEN STRUCTURE の MATTHIEU ROMARIN だよ。真の才能を備えているね。まさにBLESSING IN DISGUISE (苦あれば楽あり。メタルチャーチ) だね。彼は最高だよ！彼のカリスマ的なボーカルラインとハーモニーはパワーと表現力を楽曲に与え完全に思ってもみなかった方向に進めてくれたよ。
Q3: I think musical background of each member is different. KAMLATH is Siberian Metal. KING DIAMOND is off course KING DIAMOND. UNEVEN STRUCTURE is Djent / Prog. And PRIMUS is Alternative. How about that?
【PETER】: From the very beginning to the end we had no idea of what how our album will be sounding, which style it should be categorized. I just bring to Tim, Mike and Matthieu my ideas, philosophy and vision of the music. They all have an equal breath in the final mix with their personal arrangements where every single note has found its own place. It went smooth and natural as it was a dialogue between mature musicians where everyone knows his role and no needed to explain too much. I’m immensely proud and happy that my musical ideas in general has found the way through the heart, soul of Tim, Mike and Matthieu and they has given a new breath, new soul, new life to the creation named ESCAPETHECULT.
Q3: メンバー各々の音楽的背景は異なっているように思います。KAMLATH はシベリアンメタル。KING DIAMOND は勿論 KING DIAMOND。UNEVEN STRUCTURE は DJENT/PROG で PRIMUS はオルタナです。よく摺り合わせられましたね？
【PETER】: 最初から最後まで、僕らはこのアルバムがどんなサウンドになるのか、どのジャンルにカテゴライズされるのか全く分からなかったんだ。僕は三人に自分のアイデア、哲学、音楽のヴィジョンを伝えただけだよ。ファイナルミックスではどの音も収まるべき場所に収まってそれぞれが独自のアレンジを施したバージョンが聴けるよ。熟練したミュージシャン同士の会話はお互いの役割を知っているからそんなに説明する必要がないんだ。スムースで自然に進んだね。僕の音楽のアイデアが三人の心と魂を経由して新しい息吹、魂、命を得て ESCAPETHECULT となった事をとても誇りに思うし幸せだよ。
【ABOUT ALL YOU WANT TO】
Q1: Let’s talk about ‘All You Want To’. Very strange but cool!! I remind Tool, Primus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Do you agree with that?
【PETER】: Thank you! The arrangements and structures of the songs are truly unique. “All You Want To” will throw you into countless layers and textures. A vast variety of different styles: a heavy bass influence filled with bossa nova, samba & funk with top-notch Tim Alexander’s groovy drumming, multi-layered structures of the acoustic guitar’s melody interlaces with active riffs, stunning solos and psychedelic distorted guitar vibe of Mike Wead that spiced with Matthieu Romarin’s powerful vocal magnetism and charisma.We bring to the listener a really eccentric and eclectic way of songwriting. It’s so exciting to see reviews, feedbacks, and association to other bands we get around the world.Actually we had thoughts it could be difficult to compare ESCAPETHECULT to any other band. But we are fine that we’ve been added to this or that musical category.
Q1: ‘ALL YOU WANT TO’ について話しましょう。不思議な感覚ですがとてもクールですね！TOOL, PRIMUS, レッチリなんかを思い浮かべました。
【PETER】: ありがとう！曲のアレンジと構成は本当にユニークだね。“ALL YOU WANT TO” は君達に幾重にも折り重なったテクスチャーを投げかけるでしょう。バラエティ豊富な異なったスタイル：ボサノバに影響されたヘヴィーなベース、サンバ、ファンクを基とした TIM ALEXANDER の最高峰のグルーヴィーなドラム、幾重にも折り重なるアコースティックギターのメロディーと攻撃的なリフの組み合わせ、魅力的なソロとサイケデリックなギターサウンドはまさにMIKE WEAD。そこにパワフルな MATTHIEU ROMARIN の魅力的でカリスマティックな歌唱が乗る。僕らはリスナーにエキセントリックでエクレクティックなソングライティングを披露しているよ。世界中からのレビューや反応、他のバンドとの比較を貰って興奮しているんだ。実際僕らはESCAPETHECULT を他のバンドと比べるのは難しいと思っているんだ。ただどんな風にジャンル分けされても構わないよ。
Q2: All songs composed and arranged by ESCAPETHECULT Lyrics by PETER SHALLMIN and MATTHIEU ROMARIN. And Mixed and Mastered by MIKE WEAD. It doesn’t seems temporal project. Do you want to do gig and to make next album?
【PETER】: The entire album has been done in my home studio. It has taken not more than 2 weeks in total to compose, record and arrange all ideas. Mike’s role is the main in the album of course. To say Mike is amazing is to say nothing, believe, I rely on him in everything!First off he has developed and re-recorded all my demo riff guitars, put leads/solos to every song on the final stage with a kind assistance of SIMON JOHANSSON (MEMORY GARDEN, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, WOLF…) at Solna Sound Recording Sweden.He did re-amping, mixing and mastering for the several months. Yes ESCAPETHECULT is not a temporal, one-session project. There’s a plan to begin to record the second album by the end of this (2014) year. It will take much more time of course further. I already have demos ready at least for 10 compositions also lyrics for 5 songs are done. This time I’ll try to make this album in the studio all together.

【PETER】: アルバムは全て僕のホームスタジオで録音されたんだ。全てのアイデアを作曲、録音、アレンジするのに二週間かからなかったんじゃないかなあ。MIKE の役割は勿論重要だったし素晴らしかったよ。全てを信頼して頼っていたね。まず彼は僕のデモで弾いていたギターを再録して進化させてくれたね。そして全ての曲のソロとリードをスウェーデンのSolna Sound Recording で SIMON JOHANSSON (MEMORY GARDEN, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, WOLF…) の助けを借りて録音してくれたんだ。そうだね、ESCAPETHECULT は一回きりのプロジェクトではないね。今年の終わりくらいから2nd アルバムのレコーディングを始める予定があるんだ。勿論時間はかかるだろうけど。少なくとも10曲分のマテリアルと5曲分の歌詞がすでに出来上がっているよ。次は全員集まって録音したいと思っているよ。
Q3: Would you tell me about the origin of band name ESCAPETHECULT, and album title ‘All you want to’ and Artwork?
【PETER】: The full titles of the album is “All You Want To Escape The Cult”. The band’s name ESCAPETHECUT (we prefer to write it without lines) speaks for itself. Be free of any borders, restrictions and limits. Be yourself and speak to this world with the open heart, go your own way, try to be out of religious, social, political chains. Everyone has a question why should he/she do this or that thing. Every single day is a challenge to simply be yourself. That simplicity is the hardest task. Our conceptual art has many meanings and hidden quotes, orthodox, esoteric, occult symbolism and even self-irony in every single element.The full art concept has been created by talented French artist Igor Omodei, he also did our promo and the single video “I’m Absolute”.
Q3: バンド名、アルバムタイトル、アートワークについて教えて下さい。
【PETER】: アルバムのフルタイトルは “ALL YOU WANT TO ESCAPE THE CULT” なんだ。バンド名の ESCAPETHECULT （続けて書いて欲しい）はそのままの意味だよ。どんな境界、限定、制限からも自由になろうよって事。自分らしくいよう、心を広く持とう、自分の道を行こう、宗教、社会、政治的つながりを断ち切ろう。みんな自問自答しながら生きているんだ。毎日が自分らしくいるためのチャレンジだよ。単純だけど簡単な事じゃないね。アートワークにはコンセプトがあって多くの意味を持っている。引用、Orthodox, 秘伝、オカルトのシンボルが隠されていてそれぞれが自己言及的なんだ。アート全体はフランスの才能あるアーティスト、IGOR OMODEI の作品だよ。彼は僕らのPV “I’M ABSOLUTE” も手掛けているよ。
【ABOUT THEIR ROOTS AND RUSSIA】
Q1: I know Russia has lots of great bands. But I think it’s not easy to make music in Siberia. Is there any music scene?
【PETER】: I’m not quite familiar with Siberian bands. Yes we have bands in different genres but to be honest I don’t know anything about them and their success. More than 10 years I was focused on my international collaborations on the crossover of styles from Afro-Cuban-Brazilian (El Ritmo Siberia, Samberia), deep house /jazz-lounge (Le Nouvelle Audio Symbiozis), soulful / disco house (Deep Vintage) on my own label KOLONKI RECORDINGS.Also my main band is international too – KAMLATH together with my closer old time friend Max Konstantinov, my long-time axeman Mike Wead and incredible Italian baritone Marco Benevento of THE FORESHADOWING. This year we release our second album.
Q1: ロシアには優れたバンドが多く存在します。ただシベリアで音楽を作るのは簡単ではないでしょう。シーンなど存在するのでしょうか？
【PETER】: あまりシベリアのバンドには詳しくないんだ。確かにロシアにはいろいろなジャンルのバンドがあるけど正直言って彼らや彼らの成功について何も知らないんだ。10年以上に渡って僕は自分のレーベルKOLONKI RECORDINGS からAfro-Cuban-Brazilian (El Ritmo Siberia, Samberia), deep house /jazz-lounge (Le Nouvelle Audio Symbiozis), soulful / disco house (Deep Vintage) といった自分の国際クロスオーバープロジェクトをリリースしてたからね。同時に親友の Max Konstantinov , Mike Wead, そしてイタリアの驚異的バリトンシンガー THE FORESHADOWING のMarco Benevento とKAMLATH をやっているからね。今年2ndアルバムを出すよ。
Q2: Would you tell me 5 albums that changed your life?
【PETER】: There are 5 albums that have totally changed my musical tastes in Metal music:
METALLICA “Master Of Puppets”, VOIVOD “Dimension Hatross” DEATH “Spiritual Healing”, BATHORY “Twilight Of The Gods”. PRIMUS “Frizzle Fry” / Sailing The Seas Of Cheese”
I’m a bit outdated because my taste was formed and stuck forever in early 90-es… I’m a quite passionate collector of the music from the old good days: non-adapted Latin/Brazilian, forward-thinking classics as Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Schnittke, contemporary and experimental jazz, psychedelic, funk and even SALSOUL disco.
ちょっと時代遅れかもしれないね。僕の趣向は90年代前半に形成されそのまま止まっているから・・・古き良き時代の音楽の情熱的なコレクターなんだ。 Latin/Brazilian, Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Schnittke, contemporary, experimental jazz, psychedelic, funk に SALSOUL disco でさえね。
