現在、海外のメタルシーンにおいて最も注目を集めている新鋭の1つ、変革者にして US Atmospheric Death Metal の始祖 FALLUJAH が待望の新作 “Dreamless” をリリースしました！！
“Death Metal Revolution” (デスメタル革命) とまで評された出世作 “The Flesh Prevails” から2年。メタル界のメガレーベル、Nuclear Blast に移籍して初の作品は、より美しく、よりキャッチーで、同時にシンセサウンドや女性ボーカルをチャレンジングに取り入れた、多様なモダンメタルを象徴する作品に仕上がりました。
“Void Alone” は変革者、モダンメタルの旗手としての実力を強く主張する楽曲です。アルバムで最もキャッチーに思える “Void Alone” には女性ボーカリスト Tori Letlzer の美麗で繊細な歌声が大胆にフィーチャーされています。Death Metal のブルータリティー、女性ボーカルが生み出す荘厳なアトモスフィア、そして POLYPHIA さえ想起させる、トリッキーかつメロディアスなギタープレイが三位一体となって鮮やかに際立ち、リスナーに新鮮な驚きを与えてくれます。実際、Scott と Brian のギターチームはピッキングハーモニクスやクリケットを活用し、独特の雰囲気を創出し、アルバムを通して印象的で傑出したプレイを披露しています。
インタビューで答えてくれた通り、もはや FALLUJAH の顔となった感もある Tori の歌声をフィーチャーした楽曲は、 “Void Alone” 以外にも計5曲存在し、Alex のインテンスに満ちたグロウルとの協奏で作品に見事なコントラストとエモーションをもたらしていますね。
同時に、ドラマー Andrew Barid がメインソングライターの1人である “Dreamless” では、彼らのリズム面での挑戦、プログレッシブな1面にもフォーカスする必要があります。
“Abandon” では OPETH の “Deliverance” を想起させる、プログレッシブでリズミックな硬質のリフワークが聴けますし、Death-Metal には珍しいワルツで畳み掛ける “Lacuna” も非常にチャレンジング。特筆すべきは “Scar Queen”で、複雑なグルーヴと強烈なアグレッション、幾重にもレイヤーされたシンセサウンドはあの Devin Townsend と比肩し得るほどの創造性に満ち溢れています。それは勿論、現在行っている Devin、そして Modern Prog-Metal の扉を開けた BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME とのツアーという形に結実しています。(余談ですが10月にはアルバムで美声を聴かせた Tori も合流するそう。)
さらに、シンセサウンド、実験性という観点から見れば、”Fidelius”, “Les Silences” は完全にアンビエンスとエレクトロビートに振り切った楽曲。Post-Rock にも接近し、時に多幸感すら感じさせる “Dreamless”。人生を変えたアルバムに TYCHO を挙げているのにも頷けます。拡散する彼らの興味と共にアルバムにモダンな多様性をもたらし、作品の素晴らしいアクセントとなっていますね。

【ABOUT “DREAMLESS”】
FALLUJAH caused quite a stir in the music world with the release of their latest album, »The Flesh Prevails«. It topped several “best of 2014” lists in not only the metal world, but in the progressive music community as well and won over scores of new fans with their fresh, emotive, and technically challenging music. As a result, FALLUJAH has paved the way for a new melodic and atmospheric perspective on death metal!
»Dreamless« was recorded at Sharkbite Studios with producer Zack Ohren (ANIMOSITY, SUFFOCATION, ALL SHALL PERISH, DECREPIT BIRTH), and was mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis (DEVILDRIVER, CANNIBAL CORPSE, WHITECHAPEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, CARNIFEX) in Orlando, FL at Audiohammer. Cover art was created by Peter Mohrbacher. The album features guest vocal appearances by Tori Letzler, Mike Semesky and Katie Thompson and a guest guitar solo by Tymon Kruidenier (ex-CYNIC, EXIVIOUS).
前作 “The Flesh Prevails” のテクニカルとアトモスフィアを共存させた作風は、フレッシュでエモーショナルとの評判を呼び、メタルシーンのみならず、プログコミュニティーまでも強く魅了しました。
あれから2年。今作 “Dreamless” において印象的なのは、まずは女性クリーンボーカル Tori Letzler がゲストとして計４曲に参加することで増したキャッチーさです。アンビエンスとアグレッションを見事に対比させるこのコラボレーションは実に際立っていますね。メロディーの質もさらに向上しているように感じます。
同時に、トレモロリフの使用頻度はさらに増えており、高いテクニックで繰り出される美麗なシュレッド(PLOYPHIA を想起させる場面も)とトレモロの併用が彼らのユニークさ、個性を物語り、素晴らしいアトモスフィアを創造しています。映画と映画が与える感情をテーマとした今作ですが、音楽性もまさしくシネマティックという称号がふさわしいと感じました。
加えて、前作に比べてグルーヴも多様化しており、ドラムすら収録されていないアンビエントなピースまで存在します。ブライトなプロダクションも白眉で、テクデスに留まらず、多くのファンを獲得する可能性に満ちていますね。
結果として、”Dreamless”はエモーションとテクニックに溢れ、独自のアトモスフェリックデスメタルを進化させた傑作となりました！！ぜひチェックしてみてくださいね。
【ALEX HOFMANN TALKS ABOUT “DREAMLESS”】
“Simply calling it death metal would be inaccurate, This album is a major step forward with the goal in mind of transcending the limitations of not only the death metal sound but the scene at large. Anyone who is a Fallujah fan will put the record on and immediately know who it is they are listening to, but there’s a diverse palette represented here that our previous albums lacked. The aim of the album seemed a lot more focused this time with what we wanted to achieve. With each album we write it becomes apparent that we get better at actual songwriting.
The main theme revolves around various films and the emotions they evoke from my own past, Each song manifests not only the themes within dialogue, but the colors and cinematography as well. I found it refreshing not to have to dig deep back into my own head and try to force a sense of artistic flare on ideas or experiences that in many ways are not grimly poetic. Telling a story about the struggles of characters in an environment that is real and down to earth was so interesting because there is no sense of insincerity. You are in many ways retelling a story from your own perspective, one that is driven by empathy and common experience. The real treat will be seeing if the fan base can decipher the themes of the lyrics and figure out what films correlate with which songs.
I want the kids to be able to put the record on and actually feel something real,I think if I had to direct their emotions it would be those of nostalgia, memories and someone of blissful ignorance. I want a fan to put on a song from a new record that he’s never heard before and have it take him back to a time or place that the song has no attachment to. The melodies and atmospheres on this record are powerful in that way for all of us so we hope it has the same effect on other.”
