「僕たちにとって “プログ” とは、感情を動かし、論理的に脳を破壊するような、心を揺さぶる音楽だよ。そして、どんなジャンルでも取り入れることができる音楽だ」
“プログレ” の沼にハマった現代のファンは、PINK FLOYD, YES, GENESIS, ELP, KING CRIMSON といった60年代後半から70年代半ばにかけての全盛期を懐かしむか、もしくは DREAM THEATER や PORCUPINE TREE, OPETH といった90年代に起こったジャンルの混交を “新しい” ものとして “寛容に” 受け入れるかのどちらかがほとんどでしょう。では、本当に新しい “ブログ” の形やアーティストが登場したとしたら、受け入れられる余地はもうこの場所に残されてはいないのでしょうか？
プログレッシブ・ミュージックは常に、あらゆる形のロック、フォーク、ジャズ、クラシック、メタルまで、幅広い音楽の領域を平等に愛おしく抱きしめる世界でした。そして実は、年月の経過と音楽地図の拡大は、そのパレットをさらに奥深く多様化しようとしています。イスラエルからオリエンタルな空気と感情の起伏を運ぶ、喜怒哀楽の交差点 MENTAL FRACTURE はまちがいなく、プログの次世代化を推し進める起爆剤です。

YES や KING CRIMSON といった “プログレ” を定義したバンドの特徴。その核心に、メロディーとテンポ、そして構造の複雑さ、名人芸が据えられていたのは否定できない事実でしょう。多くの場合、それは “More is Better”、”多ければ多いほど良い” という足し算の原則に基づいていたのかもしれませんね。もちろん、それは極論で、そこだけにスポットが置かれていたわけではありませんが。
後に PORCUPINE TREE のようなアーティストが人気を得たのは、その複雑さがやり過ぎにならないよう、線引きをするタイミングを心得て、マイナスの美学を尊んだおかげであったとも言えるのではないでしょうか。そして、MENTAL FRACTURE は時代や場所を超越しながら、その音楽的な算数の巧みさで明らかに群を抜いています。
「オリエンタルな音楽は、それだけでは万人受けはしないかもしれない。だけど、メタルの中に取り入れると、聴衆の心を激しく揺さぶることができるんだよね。僕たちは、微妙な形ではあるけれど、確実にこのテイストを作曲に使っているんだよ」
“Inception of Fear” や “Clockwork” といった名曲群には、プログの先人に贈るリスペクト、90年代と中近東が混ざり合った濃密なメランコリー、現代ジャズの知的なハーモニーと共に、エスニックなパーカッションやアコースティックな響きが添えられています。それはさながら、地中海、紅海、死海という3つの海に面するイスラエルの多様な音景色。Ori Mazuz のファルセットを活用した情熱的な歌唱と、美しくも不気味でピーキーな鍵盤の響きはさながらモーゼのように、広大な “Disaccord” の海を自由自在に闊歩していくのです。
それにしても、KING CRIMSON が “Red” で達成した憂鬱な夢を前半で印象づけながら、大団円 “Hearts Of Stone” で DREAM THEATER のあの傑作 “Metropolis Pt.2” をリクリエーションするその度量はあまりに広大。決して明からさまなオリエンタル・フレーズを使用しているわけではないにもかかわらず、絶対的に感じる中東の風も白眉。

INTERVIEW WITH ORI MAZUZ

Q1: First of all, you were born in Israel. From jazz, classical music, to metal, recently Israeli artists are leading the music scene. How does your being born and raised in Israel affect your music?

【ORI】: The Israeli music scene is extremely diverse, having a lot of great artists in many genres and styles. This means you are very likely to encounter a show by a great band that does something a bit different than what you usually listen to. Such a scene really complements our style of composition, as we love taking even the tiniest bits of inspiration from music that is sometimes completely unrelated to us stylistically.

Q1: 近年、イスラエルはジャズからメタルまで音楽シーンを牽引する国の一つとなっていますね？そういった環境はあなたたちにどんな影響を与えてきましたか？

【ORI】: イスラエルの音楽シーンは非常に多様で、様々なジャンルやスタイルの素晴らしいアーティストがたくさんいるんだよ。つまり、自分が普段聴いている音楽とはちょっと違う、素晴らしいバンドのライヴに出会える可能性が非常に高いんだよね。
こういったシーンは、僕たちの作曲スタイルにとても合っているんだ。僕たちは、時にはスタイル的に全く関係のない音楽から、ほんのわずかでもインスピレーションを得ることが大好きなんだからね。

Q2: How did Mental Fracture come to be? Where did your band name come from?

【ORI】: In 2010 Ori, Yogev and Hai were performing in a school band in Rishon LeZion. We felt that we have great chemistry. Ori was experimenting at the time with writing original music and arrangements. Inspired by bands like Dream Theater, Opeth and Porcupine Tree, we thought it would be cool to form our on progressive rock band! Philip, who studied at the same high school as Yogev and Hai, joined the band and we started composing “Genesis” and “The Mind’s Desire” together (Which were released on the 2019 EP). Although we have collected material for many years up to this day, life got in the way and we couldn’t be an active band until now, 12 years later, when we have finally released “Disaccord”.

Q2: MENTAL FRACTURE 結成の経緯を教えていただけますか？

【ORI】: 2010年、Ori, Yogev, Hai の3人は、リション・レジオンのスクールバンドで演奏していたんだ。僕たちは、素晴らしいケミストリーを感じていたよ。Ori は当時、オリジナル曲の作曲やアレンジを試行錯誤していたんだ。DREAM THEATER, OPETH, PORCUPINE TREE といったバンドに触発されて、自分たちでプログロック・バンドを結成したらクールだろうと思ったんだ！
そうして、Yogev, Hai と同じ高校で学んだ Philip がバンドに加わり、一緒に “Genesis” と “The Mind’s Desire” の作曲を始めた（これは2019年のEPでリリースされた）。今日まで長年に渡ってマテリアルを集めてきたものの、生活との両立はなかなか難しくてね。なかなかバンドとして活動することができず、12年後の今、ようやく “Disaccord” をリリースすることができたんだよ。

Q3: What is the metal/rock scene like in Israel? What’s the hardest part of being in a metal/rock band in Israel and the Middle East?

【ORI】: Israel has an amazing metal community with a variety of sub-genres. Prog is one of them, with bands like Orphaned Land, Subterranean Masquerade, Scardust and many more. The audience here loves sophisticated music and loves to get wild on live shows! The hardest part, for every musician, is to be noticed and reach this audience.

Q3: 中近東でメタルやロックをやることの難しさは何でしょうか？

【ORI】: イスラエルには、様々なサブジャンルを持つ素晴らしいメタル・コミュニティがある。プログもその一つで、ORPHANED LAND, SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE, SCARDUST といった素晴らしいバンドがいるんだ。
イスラエルの観客は洗練された音楽が好きで、ライブで盛り上がるのが大好きなんだよ！
ミュージシャンにとって最も難しいのは、そういった観客の目に留まり、その目に届くようになることなんだよ。

Q4: Your melodies are really attractive and engaging. Regarding the Middle East, I’ve had interviews with bands like Orphaned Land. Riverwood and Myrath. They were very oriental in their music, sometimes incorporating Middle eastern folk instruments. There is a definite oriental flavor to your music as well, would you agree? Why are Middle Eastern melodies so appealing to the world?

【ORI】: The bands mentioned really opened our minds about oriental music, as it may not appeal to everyone on its own, when incorporated in metal music it can really touch the metal audience. We are definitely using this flavor in our composition, although in a subtle way.

Q4: ORPHANED LAND, RIVERWOOD, MYRATH といった中近東のバンドは、オリエンタルなメロディーや楽器を巧みに楽曲に取り入れて人気を博しています。
あなたたちはそこまであからさまではないにしろ、中近東の憂いのようなムードが楽曲を一層素晴らしいものに引き立てていますね？

【ORI】: 君の挙げたバンドは、僕たちがオリエンタル・ミュージックに目覚めるきっかけとなった人たちだよ。
オリエンタルな音楽は、それだけでは万人受けはしないかもしれない。だけど、メタルの中に取り入れると、聴衆の心を激しく揺さぶることができるんだよね。僕たちは、彼らよりは微妙な形ではあるけれど、確実にこのテイストを作曲に使っているんだよ。

Q5: I have interviewed various Israeli artists, Orphaned Land, Scardust, Subterranean Masquerade, Nili Brosh, etc., and most of them mentioned their prayers for peace. Israel is a country where war is right around the corner…could you tell us your stance on the Israeli-Palestinian issue and the recent Russian aggression?

【ORI】: The Israeli-Palestinian issue is really complicated. Too complicated to the point that trying to explain any side of it in such a short format would not do it justice. We are experiencing a conflict nearly every year and each time it happens it enlightens how stupid our reality can be. The only thing we can do is to hope for peace. We are all human beings after all and we do not deserve to die for one’s political ambitions or in the name of god. Our hearts are with the people of Ukraine.

Q5: ORPHANED LAND, SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE, SCARDUST といったイスラエルのバンドにインタビューして感じたのは、彼らの平和に対する願いでした。まさに戦争がすぐそばにある国だからこそなんでしょうかね…

【ORI】: イスラエルとパレスチナの問題は本当に複雑なんだよ。あまりに複雑すぎて、こうした短いフォーマットで説明しようとしても、正当な評価は得られないだろうな…。
僕たちはほぼ毎年紛争を経験していて、そのたびに、僕たちの現実がいかに愚かなものであるかを思い知らされるんだ。僕たちにできることは、ただひとつ、平和を願うことだけだ。だって僕たちは皆、結局のところ人間であり、他人の政治的野心や神の名のもとに死ぬべきでは決してないのだから。だから…僕たちの心はウクライナの人々とともにあるよ。

Q6: I asked about the war because “Disaccord” seemed to me to be an album about the division of the world and its horrors. Can you tell us about the artwork Chess and the concept of the piece?

【ORI】: “Disaccord” is an album about the division between a person and themselves. Every song is telling a story about a person dealing with their cognitive dissonances. The artwork shows a chess board with only white pieces, and with the king fallen down, which symbolizes a person check-mating themselves.

Q6: 戦争について尋ねたのは、”Disaccord” “不一致、不調和” というアルバム自体、そしてチェスのアートワークが、世界の分断とその恐怖について描いていると感じたからです。

【ORI】: “Disaccord” は、他人と自分との分裂、分断をテーマにしたアルバムなんだ。すべての曲は、認知的不協和に対処する人についての物語を語っているんだよ。アートワークは白い駒だけのチェス盤で、キングが倒れていて、これはつまり人が自分自身をチェックメイトしているってことを象徴しているんだね。

Q7: Still, “Disaccord” is a really great album! I’ve rarely heard progressive music as emotional as this one! Musically, we can hear influences like Opeth, Camel, Porcupine Tree, Rush, etc. Could you please talk about your musical roots?

【ORI】: Thank you! We take what we like from every musical artist that inspires us. It creates a musical language that really moves us emotionally. Ori was classically trained on the piano, so you can hear influences in the melodies from Chopin and the drama buildup and climax of Rachmaninoff. You can hear the melancholy from Camel and Porcupine Tree and the complexity and fierceness of Opeth, and also jazzy harmonies inspired by Snarky Puppy and Esperanza Spalding. The album was self produced, mixed and mastered by Ori and Yogev, so the sound of the album is the sound of the band.

Q7: それにしても、これほどエモーショナルなプログ・ミュージックはめったにお目にかかれないですよ！
OPETH, CAMEL, PORCUPINE TREE, RUSH といったバンドからの影響に、あなたたち独自の感情的な爆発が加えられて傑出した作品となりましたね？

【ORI】: ありがとう！僕たちは、インスピレーションを与えてくれるあらゆる音楽アーティストから、好きな要素を取り入れているんだよ。そうすることで、僕たちの感情を揺さぶる音楽言語が生まれるんだよね。
Ori はクラシック音楽のピアノ教育を受けてきたから、ショパンのメロディーやラフマニノフのドラマの盛り上がり、クライマックスに影響を受けているのがわかると思う。CAMEL や PORCUPINE TREE のメランコリー、OPETH の複雑さと激しさ、そして SNARKY PUPPY やEsperanza Spalding にインスパイアされたジャジーなハーモニーも聴くことができると思う。
アルバムは Ori と Yogev によるセルフプロデュース、ミキシング、マスタリングだから、このアルバムの音がそのままバンドの音だと捉えてもらっていいと思うな。

Q8: I recently interviewed a British prog band called Azure, and they said “We See ‘Prog’ As a Genre Where Anything Can Happen, Whether It Be The Dramatic Fantasy Storytelling And Guitar Harmonies Of Iron Maiden, Or The Slithering Shred Melodies Of Steve Vai, Or Even The Sugary And Bouncy Energy Of The 1975”. So, What does “prog” mean to you?

【ORI】: For us, “Prog” is mind-bending music that moves you emotionally and breaks your brain logically. It can incorporate any genre.

Q8: 最近、英国の AZURE というバンドにインタビューを行ったのですが、彼らは “プログを何でも起こり得る音楽” と捉えていると話していましたよ。

【ORI】: 僕たちにとって “プログ” とは、感情を動かし、論理的に脳を破壊するような、心を揺さぶる音楽だよ。そして、どんなジャンルでも取り入れることができる音楽だ。

EIGHT ALBUMS THAT CHANGED MENTAL FRACTURE’S LIFE

ORPHANED LAND “MABOOL”

A mediterranean metal masterpiece, where each song has a musical narrative and climax, and shows that metal can make you feel very happy too. This album really opened my mind to oriental and jewish music.

地中海メタルの傑作。音楽的な物語とクライマックスがあり、メタルがとても幸せな気分にさせてくれることを教えてくれる。このアルバムは、僕の心をオリエンタルとジューイッシュ・ミュージックへと導いてくれた。

MAJOR PARKINSON “SONGS FROM A SOLITARY HOME”

I never thought music can be this chaotic and coherent at the same time. They craft melodies and rhythms like no other band I know of and they are my favorite band to this day.

音楽がこれほど混沌とし、同時に首尾一貫したものになるとは思ってもみなかった。他のバンドにはないメロディーとリズムを作り上げていて、今日までで一番好きなバンド。(ORI)

CELTIC FROST “TO MEGA THERION”

I made my very reluctant parents buy this early extreme metal classic when I was just 5 years old. A quarter century of
listening to extreme metal followed, as I really enjoyed it against all odds.

5歳の時、嫌がる親に無理やり買わせた、初期のエクストリーム・メタルの名作。その後、エクストリーム・メタルを聴くきっかけになったね。

DREAM THEATER “SYSTEMATIC CHAOS”

While it isn’t even my favorite album from the band today, it was my first real introduction to prog metal, and it
melted my tiny teenage mind at the time.

僕のお気に入りというわけでもないけど、プログメタルに初めて触れた作品。10代の小さな心を溶かしてくれたね。(PHILIP)

MAGIC PIE “THE SUFFERING JOY”

Similarly to our album Disaccord, this album discusses psychological and emotional issues of humans. Musically, it has an enormous amount of content, heavy riffs, among soft parts. I believe Magic Pie is one of the most underrated bands out there.

僕らのアルバム “Disaccord” と同様に、このアルバムも人間の心理的、感情的な問題を論じている。音楽的には、ソフトな部分の中にヘヴィなリフがあり、膨大な内容になっている。Magic Pieは最も過小評価されているバンドの一つだと思う。

HAKEN “THE MOUNTAIN”

Brilliant compositions that never get boring through the 70 minutes of the album. The sound and production are just wonderful. This album really opened up my ears to what modern prog can sound like.

70分のアルバムを通して、決して飽きさせない見事な構成。サウンドとプロダクションがとにかく素晴らしい。このアルバムでモダンなプログレとはどんなものなのか、理解したよ。(YOGEY)

An incredible album with unique production and sound design, Gavin Harrison plays very dynamically and has a signature
sound.

I was really inspired by the groove of this album. Its compositions and arrangements are top notch.
