NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【MOON UNIT : DIFFERENCES IN LANGUAGE AND LIFESTYLE】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH JURE BULJEVIC OF MOON UNIT !!

“All Japanese Bands Are All Having a Lot Fun, a Lot Of Metal Bands Are Very Grim And Serious But Sex Machineguns And Maximum the Hormone Both Are The Complete Opposite.”

DISC REVIEW “DIFFERENCES IN LANGUAGE AND LIFESTYLE”

FAITH NO MORE, Devin Townsend, Frank Zappa, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, Eminem,
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME

MOON UNIT “DIFFERENCES IN LANGUAGE AND LIFESTYLE” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH JURE BULJEVIC

Q1: First of all, could you tell us how you found metal and started to run the band in Croatia, a place where maybe metal is not so popular?

【JURE】: While metal in Croatia isn’t mainstream it’s a very strong subculture, so we all got exposed to metal pretty early on through friends and school. Learning to play an instrument, it was kinda natural to try to play a lot of music you listen to, and before you know it you’re trying to make your own. With metal being very upfront about technical ability and super fun to play it was kinda inevitable. These days, we mostly have music related jobs, so Moon Unit is a place where we can just freely experiment and try things we like without pressure.

Q2: Could you tell us about Croatia, the country and its metal scene?

【JURE】: Croatia is in some ways a very complicated place, but if I had to boil it down I’d say it’s pretty safe and overall a nice place to live. Most people who come here tend to get surprised how small the place is ( you can cross the country in a day’s drive ) and how much different stuff there is crammed in so little space. The metal scene waxes and wanes, currently it’s maybe a bit more low key than it used to be a few years ago, but there is a steady number of quality bands putting their stuff out there.

Q3: I was surprised to hear that you are a big fan of Sex Machineguns and Maximum the Hormon. How did you come across this kind of Japanese music and what do you like about it? Are there any other Japanese bands that you like?

【JURE】: Well, I got exposed to Japanese music pretty early on, mostly through game soundtracks and later on anime/movie soundtracks, so naturally I just started exploring on my own, because I realised there’s a lot of super interesting artists and musicians out there, so I wound up listening to and liking a lot of different Japanese music. I found out about Sex Machineguns by accident, alongside a Mad Capsule Markets album I was looking for ( another great great band ) there was this other album and I was instantly hooked, Anchang is great at so many things, a very talented guy. Overall I think I liked the lineup with Circuit V. Panther and Speedstar Sypan Joe the most, they are both amazing musicians.
Pretty similar thing happened with Maximum the Hormone, I just stumbled on some random live videos ( I had a vague recollection of Zetsubou Billy from Death Note ) and was blown a way by how good they sound! In my opinion one of the best live bands out there and I hope to see them in concert some day, and I also really like what they’re doing with Cottellee. Also, Ue-chan is one of the best bass players I’ve ever seen. They should definitely try marketing abroad more because even now without making any special effort to go abroad they have a growing fanbase in Europe and North and South America.
What do I like about it? Well, first of all they’re all having a lot fun, a lot of metal bands are very grim and serious but Sex Machineguns and Maximum the Hormone both are the complete opposite. In their songs they are talking about mundane and usual things in life like mikans or food recipes instead of tackling big themes, but at the same time they are very serious and intense about their music, and I found that very appealing. There’s a lot of creative and tight songwriting, excellent musicianship, positive energy, just the whole damn package, they just seem like they aren’t afraid of trying anything.
I like a lot of different Japanese musicians and bands from different eras and genres, we could probably talk about that for the next 15 pages so I’m just gonna name a few and feel bad about leaving some out :))).
I started out with stuff like X Japan and Dir en Grey and a lot of random anime and film music and just went out and looked for more stuff so I ended up liking a patchwork of different unrelated stuff. I like jazz musicians like Hiromi Uehara, and Ryo Kawasaki, older funk/city pop bands like Cassiopea and T-Square, composers like Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Hisaishi Joe, Yoko Kanno, Osamu Kitajima, punk bands like Stalin and Star Club, random old school hip hop stuff like King Giddra. Japan has a lot of really good musicians and producers so I’m kinda always looking out for stuff. Many Japanese artists have a great talent for writing fantastic melodies that really stick with you and that’s something that makes it easy for music to cross the language barrier.

Q4: It seems there is a tribute song to F-ZERO and 8 bit sounds. Have you been influenced by Japanese culture, for example by anime and video games?

【JURE】: Yep, Anatomy Park is pretty much an F-Zero tribute song. Back when I was a kid I was instantly captivated by that soundtrack because it’s just out there, great songs with very very interesting arrangements and it really stuck with me through the years, so I was just waiting for an opportunity to do something similar.
Composers back in those days had to do a lot with very limited resources so they really had to get creative and as a result some pretty amazing soundtracks were made, since I spent a lot of time playing NES and SNES games while growing up ( in Eastern Europe those consoles lived on a bit longer ) they left a really big influence. Yumiko Kanki, Naoto Ishida, Yoko Shimomura, Kazuo Sawa and many others did some really great work that got burned into my growing brain and just remained there, so when the Playstation era rolled in I was already hooked. Anime/movies and games are pretty much the regular vehicle for Japan’s soft power and that was pretty much most of our initial contact with Japanese culture, but then also came books, sports and many other things to paint a fuller picture.

Q5: How did Moon Unite come to be? What’s the meaning behind your band name “Moon Unit”?

【JURE】: We had this vague idea that we wanted to try a lot of different stuff we didn’t get to do up to that point in our musical lives, in the beginning playing mostly with adding a variety of more electronic music influences, but then the whole thing just started evolving on it’s own in many different directions as we got more confident. We mostly played metal up to that point but really liked all sorts of other music from hip hop to psytrance and just wanted to try our hand at adding that stuff to what we usually do. The name came up by accident. We just kept juggling different name propositions and nothing felt right, when a friend came by our rehearsal space to check out some mixes and described our music as a love child of Devin Townsend and Frank Zappa, so Moon Unit naturally came up and it kinda stuck.

Q5: MOON UNIT

Q6: I really like the album title “Differences in Language and Lifestyle”. I laughed at the eel superhero!, haha. What was the concept behind the album and what did you want to say with the lyrics?

【JURE】: The album is a cross section of all the things we like, and the name reflects that, because we do so many different things which may seem contradictory but in reality they’re not. We tend to let songs develop naturally and just end up where they need to be without trying to push them into a mould, so we end up with many different styles from really heavy to really light hearted stuff and then there’s our fascination with hip hop, but it all works together in the end. Like Bo Burnham would say, a little bit of everything all of the time 🙂
We like telling random stories, so you can basically take each song as a separate story or an episode, sometimes inspired by something from the real world and sometimes not. Motorized Frog Squad is basically a kaiju movie song about giant frogs trying to impress filmmakers, Tiny Hands is a play on Peter Pan, making him a sweatshop owner exploiting kids that never grow up, Velocirapture is adding dinosaurs to Christian iconography and so on. We figured that the world is at this point pretty ridiculous so nothing we make up can possibly be too outrageous because the reality itself has jumped the shark. Also, we totally know that eels would have some very interesting stories to tell.

Q6: “Differences in Language and Lifestyle”

Q7: In fact, it’s one of my best albums of the year – a crazy mix of Faith No More, Devin Townsend, Rage Against The Machine, and Eminem (!) all phenomenal bands from the 90s. Are you particular about that era?

【JURE】: Thank you for your kind words, we are super happy you like it so much! Yeah, we grew up on 90s music so it’s pretty much a foundation of everything we do, so there’s conscious and unconscious influences all over the place. It was a pretty wild era where a lot of different music movements just exploded in all directions. We like modern stuff too though, especially when hip hop is in question, there’s a lot of talented people out there exploring and music is more available then ever, and we’re always trying out new and exciting things we hear out there, but we can’t completely get away from our roots so that’s where a lot of interesting things happen for us because everything sort of gets reinterpreted through that 90s foundation.

FAITH NO MORE, Devin Townsend, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE,

Q8: On the other hand, your playing an instrument is very technical, right? Who are the gods of the instrument for you?

【JURE】: Oh, since about half the members of the band are classically trained musicians there could be some really interesting answers, but it’s the keyboard player writing this stuff so it’s synth city. I’d say that number one influence and role model for me would be Kevin Moore, who’s a really expressive and technical player and also a great composer, he can shred with the best, do atmospheric moody pieces, and make weird soundscapes with random sample manipulation at the same time. Then comes Porcupine Tree’s Richard Barbieri, whose philosophy of playing and sound design is based around adding textures no other instrument but a synth can make, and it’s something that we try to stick to in Moon Unit. In the end there’s Tommy Mars ( Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Band from Utopia ) who is pretty much impossible to describe so go and see Baby Snakes DVD to see him in action.

あとは、Tommy Mars(Frank Zappa、Steve Vai、Band from Utopia)がいる。

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED JURE’S LIFE

DREAM THEATER “TRAIN OF THOUGHT”

PRODIGY “THE FAT OF THE LAND”

INFECTED MUSHROOMS “ARMY OF MUSHROOMS”

SPEED CARAVAN “KALASHNIK LOVE”

SEX MACHINEGUNS “45°”

Well, since I feel bad monopolising this question too I’m going to name five albums that are super important to Moon Unit and have influenced us greatly. So, in no particular order: Dream Theater’s Train of Thought, an album that actually aged pretty well and is a great fusion of prog and nu metal with Jordan Rudess pretty much redefining keyboards in metal on that one, Prodigy – Fat of the Land, one of the most insane, exciting and just plain ridiculous albums ever, we’re huge fans of that raw and hyperactive sound. Infected Mushroom – Army of Mushrooms, one of our favorite albums back when Moon Unit was still forming, it sort of hammered into our heads that being heavy isn’t exclusively domain of metal and pushed us to experiment with expressive synth riffs. Speed Caravan – Kalashnik Love, Mehdi Haddab shredding oud over awesome electronic grooves mixing Chemical Brothers and Algerian music into something really fun and out there. Sex Machineguns – 45, Anaconda was something of a favorite of ours, so we’d often just randomly start playing it on rehearsals, some really great guitar tones and tight playing on that album, very aggressive but never sinister.

INFECTED MUSHROOM “Army of Mushrooms”。 SPEED CARAVAN “Kalashnik Love”。 SEX MACHINEGUNS “45゜”。
