NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【ELEPHANT GYM : DREAMS】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH ELEPHANT GYM !!

“We Feel Lucky That We Are Holding Instruments Rather Than Guns. We Feel Lucky That We Are Expressing Love Rather Than Hatred. We Feel Even More Lucky That Our Music Is Able To Connect People From Japan, China, USA And Other World”

DISC REVIEW “DREAMS”

マスロックのルーツを提示するため、日本の鬼才 Toe の “Two Moons” を “Go Through The Night” にサンプリングする一方で、CHIO-TIAN FOLK DRUMS & ARTS TROUPE 九天民俗技藝團とのコラボレーションでは、”Deities’ Party” の直感的な轟音に到達します。

ELEPHANT GYM “DREAMS” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH ELEPHANT GYM

Q1: First of all, congratulations on your upcoming appearance at Fuji Rock! Could you tell us how you are feeling right now? Also, Of course, you’ve played in Japan many times before, but are there any artists you are looking forward to meeting there?

【TU】: Getting on the stage of Fuji Rock has been one of our dreams. I heard from my friends and saw the YouTube videos about how amazing the festival is. There are a lot of other bands which we have played with will join the festival as well, like SPECIAL OTHERS, toconoma, and LITE. It’s really exciting to get together with these old friends once again at such a remarkable place. We hope to bring everyone a great show at Fuji Rock.

SPECIAL OTHERS、toconoma、LITE

Q2: There was a buzz the other day about a video of KT throwing down her headphones and folding in with tremendous technique. You guys are a band that combines emotion and technique, a rare combination in this day and age! What kind of musicians did you guys grow up idolizing?

【TELL】: We are inspired by a lot of Japanese bands, such as toe, LITE, Envy and etc. Most of our music heroes use both their emotion and unique technique to express themselves. Maybe that is the reason why Elephant Gym grew up like this.

Q3: The name of the band, “Elephant Gym,” suggests that you guys have a lot of imagination, haha! How did you come up with this name?

【KT】: The name of “Elephant Gym” is related to the instruments and the style of our music. The word “elephant” symbolizes our bass-driven melodies, like a walking elephant (although KT usually plays on the higher frets but it’s still mid and low frequency) and “gym” refers to the agile and irregular rhythms. Elephant Gym says that our music can be very light and soulful even though it is full of low frequency.

Q4: Kaohsiung has a very nostalgic, dreamy and magical atmosphere, and I love the ferry, and I can feel the atmosphere of that city from your music. No wonder you are from Kaohsiung and not Taipei, haha. Would you agree?

【EG】: Kaohsiung is our hometown. Compared to Taipei, life here is slower and quieter. However,we used to study at universities in Taipei and Elephant Gym was formed in Taipei. Actually it was a benefit for the band. Because it was easier to meet other band band musicians. As a beginner, having someone to look up to is very important.
After graduation, we moved back to Kaohsiung because we valued family life a lot. Living around our family is a big mental support. Besides, the cost in Taipei is much more expensive hahahaha..

Q4: Elephant Gym

Q5: Speaking of Dreamy, the artwork and music of “Dreams” are very surrealistic and dreamlike. Why did you choose the theme of dreams?

【KT】: Dreams are the answer to the question “Where does the inspiration for music come from?” for Elephant Gym. When we were asked how the music was produced, in fact, it’s hard to answer. When we read books related to dreams, like ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’ from Floyd, we find that the elements of dreams are all the information received by the brain and what the eyes see when people are awake.
After falling asleep, the brain takes apart everything you have experienced in your life and mixes and reorganizes it in a very unusual way. This is actually very similar to the process of making music. We reorganize the sounds we remember from the past to the present in a unique way to become each special song, just like each special dream.

Q6: I have been to Beipu Old Street and it is a wonderful place. You collaborated with Hakka singer Lin Sheng Xiang, used ethnic instruments, and fully incorporated Taiwanese tradition and culture into your work, would you agree?

【EG】: Lin Sheng Xiang has influenced us a lot on our attitude towards music. It’s been one of our goals to work with him. Emerging different aesthetics of our music and finding the balance are challenging yet very interesting. We enjoyed the music we created together greatly. It’s been a pleasure for us.

【EG】: Lin Sheng Xiang

Q7: Hiyune san of chilldspot is a guest on the Japanese version. They are a very young band, but what did you like about them that made you ask them to join? Also, have you been listening to Japanese music for a long time?

【EG】: Although chilldspot is a young band, their music is mature and have been featured other Taiwan artist. When we listened to their music, they wrote “Shadow” in one of their songs. “What a coincidence!” we thought at that time. Therefore, our Japanese Manager, Sho, sent them an invitation Email and they accepted the invitation. We were so lucky!
We grewed up with a lot of animation and Manga and we started to listen to Japanese music from animation. Later on, YouTube came out and opened a new world for us. We found toe on YouTube. So… Thank you YouTube!

Q8: Finally, we live in a world of pandemics, wars, and a divided world, where we would like to escape into our “dreams.” Taiwan in particular has some difficult political, diplomatic issues, how are you dealing with those political and social issues?

【EG】: As a Taiwanese, we live in fear every day and the fear melts into our subconscious. Sometimes, our consciousness has to deny fear so that we can live our daily life.
Most of the male citizens have to serve the army for a period of time. So do we. If the war happens we have to be on the battlefield. Therefore, we feel lucky that we are holding instruments rather than guns. We feel lucky that we are expressing love rather than hatred. We feel even more lucky that our music is able to connect people from Japan, China, USA and other world.
As humans, violence is rooted in our blood and war is the result of inferiority and overwhelming confusion in our collective consciousness. We will not consider anyone as evil, even the one who declared war. Because they must have suffered much more pain in their heart.
However, the only way that we can do as individuals, is to bring balance and peace within oneself. When we feel anger and depression, stop blaming ourselves or others. There are ups and downs in our lives. Accept all the dark side of yourself and keep the dark side company. Be the best friend of your dark side. Don’t try to push them away or deny them. They are precious and lovable, just like the bright side.
If we can be the best friend and mentor for ourselves, we might stop hurting others to express our inferiority, anger and depression.
