SWEDISH PROG ROCKERS BEARDFISH SET TO RELEASE THEIR BRAND NEW ALBUM “+4626-COMFORTZONE”ON 1/12 !! RIKARD SJOBLOM TALKS ABOUT NEW ALBUM, HIS MUSICAL UPBRINGING, AND MORE !!
ANEKDOTEN, ANGLAGARD といった名前を挙げるまでもなくスウェーデンが良質なプログロックの一大生産地であることはご存知の通り。昨今かの地から現れるバンドの多くはメロトロンやオルガンを駆使した古き良きヴィンテージロックに現代的な構成美や手法を取り入れ人気を博していますね。BEARDFISH もそんなバンドの一つ。ただ前作 “THE VOID” では特に荒々しいヘヴィーロックの部分を強調し彼らの個性を主張、確立し始めたような気がします。
【PRE-REVIEW “+4626-COMFORT ZONE”】
今回発売に先駆けて1/12発売の新作 “+4626-COMFORTZONE” を試聴させて頂く事が出来ました。非常に良いアルバムですね。完成度は間違いなく彼らの作品でも一番でしょう。こういったプログロック作品は作り手側の押し付けのような音楽になることが往々にしてあります。複雑で高尚ながら聴き手に伝わらない。現に彼らの初期作にはそういった面も見受けられました。しかし今作はフレーズやメロディーにフック、引っかかるフレーズが格段に増えましたね。 “COMFORT ZONE” “IF WE MUST BE APART” といった10分前後の長尺曲では彼らの敬愛する KING CRIMSON やその他諸々の有名フレーズをあざといまでに巧みにオマージュしながらも（インタビューでも認めているように）彼ら特有の瑞々しいメロディーと生々しく時に攻撃的なギターやオルガンのリックで発展させ息つく暇を与えません。後者などボーカル入りの “RED” が現代の FORCUS に展開し DOORS と共演！！みたいなトチ狂った感じが素晴らしいですよ。 他の5分前後の曲達はプログロックというよりは最早ただロックと表記したいですね。コンパクトでバラエティーに富んでいてどれをシングルに切っても問題なさそう。例えば FOO FIGHTERS とか SOAD とか QOTSA と同列に語ってもおかしくないというか。DOORS の持っていたムーディーさやサイケな雰囲気と ZEPとか THE WHO 的王道ギターロックを現代的にオルタナ感をまぶして融合させたような。とにかく非常に充実しています。プログファンにこういった楽曲群がどう評価されるのかは判りませんがもっと広いフィールドで勝負できる可能性を感じました。

Q1: Your new album “+4626-COMFORTZONE” is about to launch on January !! How are you feeling now?
【RIKARD】: Feeling good! Anxious for people to hear our new album and I can’t wait to get out on the road in March and perform some of these songs live.
Q1: 新作 “+4626-COMFORTZONE” が発売されますね。どういったお気持ちですか？
【RIKARD】: 最高だよ！みんなが新作を聴いてくれるか気がかりだけど3月にロードに出て新作の曲を披露するのが待ちきれないね。
Q2: Anyway, I think “The Void” was so dark and heavy album in your works. But “+4626-COMFORTZONE” isn’t so. Why?
【RIKARD】: I think our new album is moody, rather than dark like The Void.. It represents a feeling that I often get when I think of my hometown (where I still live).
Q2: “THE VOID” はダークでヘヴィーなアルバムでした。“+4626-COMFORTZONE” はそうではありませんね？
【RIKARD】: 新作は “THE VOID” のようにダークと言うよりはムーディーだね。僕のホームタウン（今でも住んでるんだけど）を思い浮かべた時にしばしば感じる感情のようなね。
Q3: “+4626-COMFORTZONE” is very strange title. What does it mean?And does this album have concept story? If so, please tell us the story.
【RIKARD】: We wanted to call the album something more than just Comfort Zone and since it deals quite a lot with growing up and finding yourself – in this case in the town of Gävle – we chose to print it out as a fictive phone number, the ones you can find on the big signs next to the road when you’re driving in USA for instance (1800-BACKPAIN or something similar). +4626 is the area code for Gävle. The comfort zone itself is usually a state of comfort of course, but that’s not always a good thing in my opinion. You grow up, you adapt to your parent’s, family’s, friend’s, teacher’s opinions and view of the world and all of their prejudice ideas and beliefs are passed on to you whether you like it or not. Sometimes it can be good to pause and think: is this really what I believe, is this where I stand in this question? A town can have a certain vibe and among many others the town of Gävle has a vibe of ”you shouldn’t try because you won’t be successful”. When you travel the world, every new place has its own vibe… Therefore: travel if you have the chance people!!
Q3: “+4626-COMFORTZONE”。とても不思議なタイトルですね。アルバムのコンセプトやストーリーを教えて下さい。
【RIKARD】: 僕達はこのアルバムをただ “COMFORT ZONE” と呼びたいんだ。成長し、自己発見する場所ーこの話では GAVLE という街ーを意味している。リアリティーを出す為想像上の電話番号を加える事にしたんだ。アメリカなんかドライブしてたら道の脇に例えば（1800-BACKPAIN) みたいな看板があるでしょ。+4626 は GAVLE のエリアコードなんだ。コンフォートゾーンとは勿論それ自体は快適な状態を意味するね。だけど僕の考えではそれは必ずしも良いことだけではないんだ。成長するにつれて親、家族、友達、先生の意見に合わせていかなくてはならない。世界を見渡せば君が好む好まざるに関わらず偏見や信条が襲ってくる。時々は立ち止まって考えてみると良いね。そこが本当に自分のいるべき場所なのかってね。街にはそれぞれヴァイブがある。GAVLEという街は「トライなんかするべきじゃない。どうせ成功しないんだから」というヴァイブに満ちているんだ。世界を旅して新しい場所に行けば新しいヴァイブに出会うよ。もしチャンスが欲しいなら旅をしようぜ！
Q4: This album has two long songs. “Comfort Zone” and “If We Must Be Apart (A Love Story Continued). And these two intros remind me the taste of King Crimson. “Comfort Zone” reminds me “Starless”. And “If We Must Be Apart (A Love Story Continued) reminds me “Red”. How about that?
【RIKARD】: That’s not at all impossible, we’re all big fans of King Crimson. Speaking of Comfort Zone, in the beginning I wrote the song on piano and it wasn’t until David stepped on the fuzz pedal and played the opening melody on guitar that the feel of Starless became evident.
Q4: このアルバムには二つの長尺曲が収録されています。”COMFORT ZONE” と “IF WE MUST BE APART (A LOVE STORY COTINUED)。奇しくもこの２曲のイントロは KING CRIMSON のテイストがありますね。”COMFORT ZONE” は “STARLESS”, “IF WE MUST BE APART” は “RED”を思い出しました。
【RIKARD】: それは不可避だよ。だって僕達は全員 KING CRIMSON の大ファンなんだからね。”COMFORT ZONE” について話すとまず僕がピアノで曲を書いた。DAVID がファズペダルでイントロのメロディーを弾くやいなや “STARLESS” の雰囲気が明確に感じられるようになったんだ。
Q5: Beardfish always writes very melodic vocal line. And I think it’s one of your identity. “The One Inside Part Two – My Companion Through Life” is the song like “Black Bird” of Beatles. It’s really beautiful. Anyway, Why “The One Inside” is not put continuously?
【RIKARD】: Thank you! Part two was the original The One Inside, then I just thought it was a nice little song and wanted to explore it further but not as an epic track, but instead record separate parts that would bookend the album.
Q5: メロディックなボーカルラインはバンドの長所の一つだと思います。”THE ONE INSIDE PART TWO-MY COMPANION THROUGH LIFE” は BEATLES の “BLACK BIRD” のような美しい曲ですね。THE ONE INSIDE 組曲が通して収録されていないのはなぜですか？
【RIKARD】: ありがとう！PART TWO は THE ONE INSIDE シリーズのオリジナルなんだ。書き終わってこれは素敵な小曲だからもっと発展させたいと思ったのさ。エピックな曲というだけでなく別々に収録される事でアルバムの栞のような役割も果たしているね。
【ABOUT BEARDFISH】
Q1: This is our first interview with you. So, would you tell us the origin of your band name “Beardfish”? I think it’s very unique.
【RIKARD】: Sure! The name came up during a brainstorming session at a local coffee shop. We were just looking for a name, this was in 2001, and the bass player at the time (Gabriel Olsson) came up with Beardfish. We thought it was kind of silly and that we could change it later on, but people seemed to remember it and that’s the most important feature for a band name in my opinion.
Q1: BEARDFISH というバンド名はユニークですね。由来を教えて下さい。
【RIKARD】: もちろんだよ。バンド名は BRAINSTORMING セッション中地元のコーヒーショップで生まれたんだ。2001年だったか、名前を探していたんだけど当時のベーシスト GABRIEL OLSSON が思いついたんだ。クソみたいな名前だけど後から変えればいいやと思っていたらなんか定着しちゃってね。まあそれが大事な事だから良いかなって思っているよ。
Q2: Speaking of Melodic, Sweden has lots of prog bands. You, Anglagard, Anekdoten, The Flower Kings, Moon Safari, Kaipa, and so on.All these bands have beautiful melody. In fact, in these 20 years, almost all great prog bands come from Sweden. Why?
【RIKARD】: I’m not really sure, but it could be because there are a lot of great musicians here and anyone can go to music school and learn an instrument at a young age, at very low rates.. Or maybe there’s something in the water, I’m not sure, haha.
Q2: スウェーデンは ANGLAGARD, ANEKDOTEN, THE FLOWER KINGS, MOON SAFARI, KAIPA, などメロディックで優良なプログバンドを生み出し続けています。過去20年良質なプログバンドはほぼスウェーデンから登場していると言っても過言ではないですね。
【RIKARD】: なぜか判らないんだけど偉大なミュージシャンが多いよね、ここには。誰でも若い頃から音楽学校に行って音楽を学べるからかな。もしかしたら水になんか入ってるんかもしれんね（笑）
Q3: Without “+4626-COMFORTZONE”, which album and song are most proud of?
【RIKARD】: I’m most proud of Destined Solitaire as an album, because I can’t figure out how the hell we were able to learn and record all that music in the short amount of time we did it in (we recorded it in five days) plus I think it has some of our absolute best songs. ”Until You Comply” is probably my favourite.
Q3: 新作以外で最も誇れるアルバム、曲はどれでしょう？
【RIKARD】: 最も誇れるのは “DESTINED SOLITAIRE” アルバムだね。どうやってあんな短時間で学んで全てをレコーディングしたのかわからないくらいさ。5日間だったね。アルバムにも完璧な僕達のベストソングが収録されているよ。”UNTIL YOU COMPLY” はおそらく僕のフェイバリットだね。
