「レーベルは METALLICA と SLAYER の波を利用することばかり考えていたみたいだけど…特にアメリカではね。純粋に僕たちは早すぎたんだ。たしかに TOXIK はスラッシュの波に乗ったけど、これってスラッシュなの？？それが完璧な例えだよ。初期の TOXIK の75%は超高速でシンコペーションしたテストステロンで、残りの25%はメロディとダイナミクスだったから。スラッシュはみんなの中にある最も近い定義だっただけなんだと思う」
80年代半ばにギタリスト Josh Christian によって結成されたアメリカのスラッシュメタル・バンド TOXIK はメタルにとって早すぎた “毒気” であり、勇気ある開拓者でした。デビュー作 “World Circus” の無慈悲な猛攻で MEGADETH や ANTHRAX, それに SANCTUARY といった猛者たちを震えあがらせた彼らは、続く “Think This” でメタルの羽化を促しました。例えば、CORONER が、例えば WATCHTOWER が、例えば MEKONG DELTA が、例えば ARTILLERY がそうであったように、TOXIK もまたメタルのスピードとスリルを奇想天外な知と魑の世界に誘いました。中でも、彼らの精巧な技巧とプログレッシブな創造性は群を抜いていました。

結局、商業的な成功を収めることは叶わず、92年に解散に至った TOXIK。しかし、Josh が語るように彼らの無謀とも思える挑戦は決して無駄ではありませんでした。”Think This” の異様はいつしか威容へと姿を変え、CYNIC, ATHEIST, 後期 DEATH, MESHUGGAH、さらに最近では VEKTOR といったゲームチェンジャーたちの指標となりました。そうして彼らは、メタルの多様性や寛容さを開花させていくこととなります。

20年間沈黙を守っていた TOXIK ですが、2013年には世界の舞台に戻り、ダイナモをはじめとする数々のフェスティバルに出演。その後、新しくなったバンドで “In Humanity”, “Breaking Class”, “Kinetic Closure”の3枚の EP をリリースし、”World Circus” と “Think This” の再録を披露。そして今、2022年、TOXIK は前作から33年という壮大な年月を経て、3rdアルバム “Dis Morta” を完成させました。
大胆に、苛烈に、衝動的に疾駆する “Dis Morte”, “Feeding Frenzy” のオープニング・ダブルは、得意の社会的・政治的なトピックを題材にしながらトラディショナルなモッシュピットを構築します。”発情した QUEEN”、そんな作品の世界観を植え付けながら。もちろん、MORDRED にも通ずるクロス・オーバーの美学も TOXIK の個性ですが、OVERKILL にも匹敵する強度と灼熱のペースも同様に彼らの真骨頂。スラッシュに対する鬼気迫る飢えは、33年の空白を埋めて余りあるターボチャージャーの衝撃。
それにしても、Allan Holdsworth のソロ曲を無理やりスラッシュメタルと悪魔合体したかのような後者は壮絶。Alex Skolnick だけが持て囃されるスラッシュ・ギターの世界は不公平だと言わざるを得ません。HEATHEN の Jim DeMaria もスーパー。
一方で、緩やかななパッセージ、ミドルテンポの迷宮、プログレッシブな情熱が巧みなギヤチェンジを交えて融合した “Hyper Reality” は、新たな地平への大胆な挑戦として際立っていて、TOXIK が未だ実験とサウンドスケープの拡張を恐れていないことを改めて証明します。同様に、古のプログレッシブを引用した “Chasing Mercury” やジャズ・バラードが加速する “Devil in The Mirror”, NEVERMORE の異形にも接近した “Creating the Abyss” も TOXIK にしか不可能な境界の侵食でしょう。そう、これはまごう事なき “Think This” の続編。
今回弊誌では、Josh Christian にインタビューを行うことができました。「僕の父は、僕が生まれる前に日本にいた頃の話をしながら、日本の文化をロマンチックに語ってくれていたからね。父は日本の社会とその組織を非常に尊敬していて、アメリカ社会についての会話でしばしば対比的な例として使っていたんだよ…。80年代、NYの子供たちは日本の影響を受けつつあって、特に僕はゲームに夢中で、他にもコミック、アニメ、音楽などで影響を受けたんだ。当時、日本に夢中になっていたから “Tokyo” という名前がフィットしていたんだよ。今日でも、TOXIK から日本の影響を聴くことができるよ」 どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH JOSH CHRISTIAN
Q1: Since this is a Japanese interview, I would like to ask you first, Toxik was originally named Tokyo, which was changed due to rights issues, wasn’t it? Why did you change the name to Tokyo in the first place?
【JOSH】: Hello and thank you for the opportunity to speak to our Japanese fans, I’ve always had a fascination with your culture. My father romanticized it for me with stories about his time there before I was born. He respected the society and its organization greatly and used it as a contrasting example often in conversations about American society… As an NYC kid in the 80’s Japanese influences was becoming more and more popular, video games especially as I was an early gamer, comics, animation, and music etc, the name Tokyo fit what I was into at the time. To this day you can hear musical influences if you know what to listen for.
Q1: 日本のインタビューなのでまずはこの質問から。TOXIK はもともと TOKYO という名前でしたよね？
【JOSH】: やあ！日本のファンのみんなに話す機会をくれてありがとう！僕はいつも日本の文化に魅了されてきたんだ。僕の父は、僕が生まれる前に日本にいた頃の話をしながら、日本の文化をロマンチックに語ってくれていたからね。父は日本の社会とその組織を非常に尊敬していて、アメリカ社会についての会話でしばしば対比的な例として使っていたんだよ…。

Q2: For me, “Think This” was a true bible. It was one of the gateway albums to thrilling, intelligent metal. Why did you take a more progressive direction as you progressed from “World Circus” to “Think This”?
【JOSH】: Great question thank you. Study first and foremost, I just became more serious about my instrument and writing for the band. I think when you realize you’ve got a knack for something it’s seductive you want to keep pushing it to see where your boundaries are. The expression is what carries us as artists. Think This was a reckless, pure artistic statement. The label didn’t really like it the fans were like “it’s weird”… we kind of jumped off a cliff with it at the time but in retrospect seems like it was the right thing to do as the record has gone on to become a benchmark for a lot of people. Of course, I could not be proud of that fact.
Q2: 私にとって “Think This” はバイブルで、スリリングで知的なメタルへの入り口となりました。”World Circus” から “Think This” へのプログレッシブな進化、その理由はなぜだったんですか？
【JOSH】: いい質問だね、ありがとう。まず第一に、”Think This” で僕は、自分の楽器とバンドのための作曲にもっと真剣に取り組むようになったんだ。自分の才能に気づいたとき、自分の限界を知るため挑戦することは魅力的だからね。そうすることが、僕たちをアーティストたらしめているとも言える。

Q3: I believe that if Toxik had continued its activities, it would have become as popular as Sepultura, Meshuggah, and Pantera are today. Why did you break up in 1992?
【JOSH】: Hold on while I wipe the tears out of my eyes lol.. We are not the first or last to be overlooked by the hard eye of fate. We had very little support both personally and professionally and in hindsite it was a terrible mistake to walk away, at least from a musical career standpoint but at the time it seemed bleak and the clock was racing by.
The upshot is for all of us we went on to have pretty normal and happy lives. No one died in a shootout and several of us that had children got to see our prodigy successfully go onto live their own lives…
Q3: もし TOXIK が活動を続けていれば、SEPULTURA や MESHUGGAH, PANTERA のようなレジェンドになっていたはずです。なぜ、1992年に解散してしまったんですか？
【JOSH】: 涙を拭うからちょっと待っててくれ(笑)。まあ、僕たちは、運命の厳しさに見落とされた最初のバンドでも最後のバンドでもないんだよ。僕たちは個人的にも、プロフェッショナルとしても、ほとんどサポートを受けていなかった。今思えば、少なくとも音楽的なキャリアという観点からは、立ち去ったことはとんでもない間違いだったんだけど、だから当時は暗澹たる気持ちで、時間だけがどんどん過ぎていっていたんだよね。
結局のところ、僕たち全員は、ごく普通の幸せな人生を歩むことになったんだよ。銃撃戦で死ぬこともなく、子供がいたメンバーの何人かは、彼らが無事に自分の人生を歩むのを見ることができたしね…
Q4: I mentioned Messhuggah’s name, but I think the influence you guys and bands like Meshuggah, and Voivod who were doing weird stuff in thrash metal, had on later technical metal was tremendous. Why did you use the “vehicle” of thrash metal? Did you consider yourselves thrash metal back then?
【JOSH】: Well Voivod and Toxik both predate Meshuggah but I understand the question and the simple answer is no, we were labeled thrash but I don’t think we actively pursued that banner until we were pushed to by the record company. From a marketing standpoint Toxik did ride that thrash wave but from the beginning, we always seemed to generate an extra descriptor … Technical Thrash, Progressive Thrash,Prog-Tech-Black-Industrial…lol, no Im kidding, but you get it… like the labels were all about capitalizing on the Metallica and Slayer wave …in the states especially. We were early just not early enough but Thrash as a genre???? was perfect for what we were putting out because 75% of what early Toxik was, was blazing fast super syncopated testosterone, the other 25% was melody and dynamics. I think thrash was the closest definition anyone had.
Q4: MESHUGGAH の名を挙げましたが、あなたや彼ら、それに VOIVOD といったバンドは、スラッシュ・メタルを “乗り物” として、テクニカルな野心を満たしていきましたよね？
ただ、あなたたちの中でスラッシュ・メタルをやっているという自覚はあったのでしょうか？
【JOSH】: VOIVOD と TOXIK は両方とも MESHUGGAH より前なんだけど、その質問は理解できるし、単純な答えはノーだ。マーケティング的な観点からは、TOXIK はスラッシュの波に乗ったけど、当初から、僕たちは常に余分な “記述項” を生み出していたようだから…。テクニカル・スラッシュ、プログレッシブ・スラッシュ、プログ・テック・ブラック・インダストリアル…笑、冗談だけど、わかるよね…

Q5: Toxik reunited once and then resumed full-fledged activity in 2013, but it took almost another 10 years for you to release a record! However, “Dis Morta” is a great record and well worth the long wait! Why did you decide to make the album at this time?
【JOSH】: Thank you, we keep going and I actually have a lot more of this modern version of us to use. There’s a lot of brutal but super beautiful material written and more coming as we speak. Starting recording on the next record soon. This record was long overdue, It was time, it was pastime. The guys and I had worked really hard to get to this point, James DeMaria especially but also Shane and Ron, Eric… the whole band just kept working through thick and thin. It’s a pretty amazing story so far… this chapter rocked!
Q5: TOXIK は一度短期の再結成を果たし、2013年からは活動を続けていますが、それからフルアルバムの完成に10年かかりましたね！
ただ、”Dis Morta” は待った甲斐のある素晴らしいレコードですよ！
【JOSH】: ありがとう。これから僕たちは進み続けるし、実はこの現代版の僕たちをもっとたくさんマテリアルがあるんだよ。残酷だけど超美しいものがたくさんあって、今話しているところにも続きがあるんだ。もうすぐ次のアルバムのレコーディングに入る。
たしかにこのレコードには長い時間を必要とした。必要なのは時間であり、娯楽だった。James DeMaria を筆頭に、Shane、Ron、Eric……バンド全員が、どんな困難があっても働き続けたんだ。ここまでのストーリーはとても素晴らしいよ…この章はロックだったね!
Q6: The original member is now only one guitarist, Josh Christian. Is Toxik a solo project of Josh’s in a sense? Or is it more important to you to be a band with new members?
【JOSH】: No I wanted a band under the Toxik logo. The band the way it sits now has members who have been involved for longer than the original version combined. Also even on the first 2 records there were players coming and going. When World Circus was released it was a completely different lineup than who I had been working with 2 years before..
Q6: オリジナルメンバーはあなただけになりましたが、TOXIK は現在ある意味、あなたのソロ・プロジェクト的な側面があるのでしょうか？
【JOSH】: いや、そうじゃなくて、TOXIK のロゴの下でバンドをやりたかったんだ。今のバンドは、オリジナルよりも長い間関わっているメンバーがいるんだよ。それに、最初の2枚のアルバムでも、プレイヤーの出入りはあったからね。
“World Circus” をリリースした時は、その2年前に一緒にやっていたメンバーとは全く違う顔ぶれだったんだ。
Q7: In “Dis Morta” do you still hear strong progressive influences like King Crimson, Yes, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra? In recent years, so-called “Djent” with a lot of polyrhythms, such as Animals As Leaders, became popular. How do you feel about “progressive” music like theirs?
【JOSH】: Yes I think my musical fathers are still guiding us lol. Dis Morta has moments that are so70’s, Chasing Mercury as an example, really cool that we can include so much influence without it being seen as plagiarizing, like the genre again is so open-minded that its still Real art.
Q7: “Dis Morta” では、YES, KING CRIMSON, THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA のような、70年代のプログレッシブ・ロックの色がさらに濃くなっていますね？
【JOSH】: そう、僕の音楽の父たちは、今でも僕たちを導いてくれていると思うんだ(笑)。まちがいなく、”Dis Morta” には70年代的な瞬間がある。
例えば、”Chasing Mercury”。盗作と思われずに多くの影響を取り入れることができるのは本当にクールだよ。つまり、このジャンルはとてもオープン・マインドで、今でもリアル・アートなんだ。
Q8: Your guitar solos remind me of the late Eddie Van halen and Allan Holdsworth. Very creative and exciting! There is clearly something different about you from the social networking guitarists of today, I think it’s magic,haha. Would you agree?
【JOSH】: Wow!thank you again… both Eddie and Allan had a profound impact on my musicality I suppose that it’s not hard to see the connection in the way I structure my solos… Stories within stories right? Although I do not consider myself in their company I appreciate the comparison. There are many others who helped shape my voice.
Q8: あなたのギターにも、Eddie Van Halen や Alan Holdsworth のような “マジック” が感じられますよ。
【JOSH】: Wow! ありがとう！ Eddie と Allan は僕の音楽性に大きな影響を与えたんだ…僕が構成するソロを聴けば、そのつながりを理解するのは難しいことじゃないと思う…つまり、ストーリーの中のストーリーというやつ。
僕は彼らと同じ場所にいるとは思ってもいけど、その比較には感謝しているよ。ただ、僕の声を形成するのに貢献した人は他にもたくさんいるんだ。
