Five Piece From Massachusetts, ASTRONOID Has Just Released Their Phenomenal Debut Full-Length “Air” !! “Dream Thrash” Reaches New Realm Of Metal Music !!

DISC REVIEW “AIR”

ALCEST, DEAFHEAVEN、WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM,

ASTRONOID “AIR” : 10/10

【INTERVIEW WITH BRETT BOLAND】

2013_11_13_astronoid_78

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band? How did Astronoid come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “Astronoid”?

【BRETT】: The band started as a studio project with Dan Schwartz and I. He had to do a recording for a school project, and I had written a couple songs. We molded the songs and got Nick Thornbury from Vattnet Viskar to sing on one of them. That became the November EP. During that recording process, Dan and I were immersed in Mass Effect 3. While we were talking about it, I screwed up saying “asteroid” and said “Astronoid” instead. We thought it was funny and named a song after it. We later decided it was a perfect name for the project. It was original, sounded cool, and represented our sound well and we liked the attached memory. After we finished the project, I decided to make a Bandcamp and make the music available online. Once there, the songs started to take on a life of their own. People were making videos for them on YouTube and sharing the music. It was really awesome to see. Dan and I decided that it would be fun to make a full band out of the project and play live. We started working on “Stargazer” and getting a band together.
Casey Aylward from Hetfield & Hetfield joined us on guitar, and he now plays in Vattnet as well. He and I have played together in almost every musical project we have ever worked on and have been friends since 4th grade. Matt St. Jean, previously of Vattnet Viskar, was another great friend of ours. We work together really well and he’s one of the best and most creative drummers I know. We started practicing as a band and released the “Stargazer” EP. After the EP came out we started playing shows and they were going well, but we did not feel we were doing the music justice because all of the guitar parts were not being covered. Mike DeMellia, Matt’s cousin, was a perfect choice for this. He took the atmospheric parts and it made a huge difference. So here we are with the current line up.

Q2: So, your debut full-length “Air” set to be released soon !! How are you feeling now?

【BRETT】: We are so excited to share this. It has been more than 2 years in the making, and it feels good to finally have it out for people to hear. If it weren’t for Dan telling me to stop, we would still be working on it. It’s great to work with Dan in that way. He knew before I did, that continuing efforts to “perfect” the album would only start to degrade it at that point. We all agreed and are extremely proud of the end result. We went with our instincts on this record, not really trying to do anything besides writing music we wanted to hear. It’s been incredible seeing the reactions that the record has been generating. Throughout the writing process we had the same reservations some of the people hearing it for the first time are having. Is it metal? Are we metal? We came to the conclusion that it really doesn’t matter and we just wanted to continue writing in this musical direction. The direction of the album also pushed us more as musicians. We took more time practicing our parts to really nail everything. With the release of “Air” we are ready to take our live performance to the next level and can’t wait to play these songs live.

Q3: When you named this great album “Air”, what was in your mind? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of “Air”?

【BRETT】: A lot was going through our heads when it came time to name the album and we came up with a lot of names that didn’t fit. The name of the album had to encompass so much. The album was built from the instrumentals to the vocal melodies, the lyrics, then the song titles. All of the words included in the album were written through the feelings the music inspired. I feel the music conveys a message, and I had to translate that message into lyrical form. “Air” has a constant theme, but we encourage listeners to find their own interpretation of the record. The album title was taken from the song “Air”. We felt that the title perfectly summed up the feeling of the record, and the lyrics mean a lot to me. Whatever we picked needed to perfectly wrap up the album, and I feel like the name does just that..

Q4: So, I feel your previous EP “Stargazer” focused on more Post-Black sound. That means, “Air” becomes heavier and more powerful. Do you agree that? How have you evolved since “Stargazer”?

【BRETT】: Absolutely. Stargazer seemed to expand more upon November. When we started working on “Air” we could have gone into multiple directions. It was really hard to narrow down what we wanted to do. The first song written for the record was “Tin Foil Hats.” From there, we overwrote since we were developing the sound. In total we had about 15-16 songs written for the album knowing they all wouldn’t make it on. We didn’t know where the songs would take us or how they would fit in the grand scheme of the record, so we finished them all. It was important to finish every thought because new ideas developed from each song, even those that didn’t make the final cut. Most of the songs that made the album were the last ones written. The process was really fun and we hope you enjoy the result.

Astronoid-810x506

Q5: OK, we can hear lots of musical aspects from “Air”, like Metal, Post-Black, Prog, Shoegaze, Alternative… I really love your way of mixing genres. You refer to your music for “Dream Thrash”, does that mean Shoegaze or Post-Black dreamy sound meets Thrash Metal?

【BRETT】: When we were talking with ‘J’ from Blood Music, he came up with the term “dream thrash.” We loved it. We aren’t strictly black metal, shoegaze, thrash, or any other single genre, so we thought it seemed appropriate. I hate putting a genre label on anything, but if there has to be something I think “dream thrash” fits. Dream-pop bands like Mew, HEALTH, and M83 have had a huge influence on our writing, and so have thrash and black metal bands.

Q6: Your layered vocal harmony is really beautiful and attractive all through the album. You mentioned Mew or Devin Townsend for your influences. Do you think your layered harmony comes from these two artists?

【BRETT】: Believe it or not, the vocal harmony style came from Def Leppard. Pyromania and Hysteria are perfect. I always got so pumped singing along with those choruses and admired the vocal production using 100 layers of awesome harmonies. My style of singing comes more from Jonas Bjerre of Mew and Devin Townsend. Bjerre has had a huge influence on my vocals. He always seems to find a way to create a vocal melody you wouldn’t expect, and it’s still catchy as hell. His use of falsetto and full voice is incredible. Devin Townsend is just a monster. His vocals on Ocean Machine are what influenced me most. I love his dynamic range. He can be so soft and gentle and then overpower everything with his full voice. He is amazing. Combining those different vocal elements seemed natural to me, and I hope the fans find it to be an interesting combination.

Q7: From the view point of your tremolo riff, blast beats Black Metal aspect, lot’s of “Post-Black” Metal bands have emerged now a days. Alcest, Deafheaven have Shoegaze aspect, And Krallice, Litrugy have Math/Prog aspect. I think you have these two and adding much more. It can be said “Final Form of Black Metal”. What’s your thought?

【BRETT】: I hope bands continue to push genre limits. That’s how really great stuff happens. I love traditional black metal, shoegaze, thrash, dream pop and many other styles. I love anything that is original and has heart. The album is a product of what we were listening to at the time and what was going on in our lives. We were all listening to a ton black metal as well as Devin Townsend and Mew. We pushed ourselves to write something interesting that we would want to listen to. We wanted to create something that was uniquely us, and that represented us.

Q8: Especially “Up and Atom”, you have definitely Power Metal like Dragonforce influences, I think. And that’s very “New” style for the Modern Metal bands. What made you mix Power Metal elements?

【BRETT】: The power metal sound is a result of my love of classic 80’s metal. I love Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and also modern bands like 3 Inches of Blood and Skullfist. I was listening to Protest The Hero right before I sat down to work on the record, and I wanted to write a riff like them. They are incredible players. “Up and Atom” was my attempt to write something that sounded similar, and it ended up coming out completely different, but I loved where it was going and just went with it. “Up and Atom” was the most natural song for me to write. I wrote it in one sitting. That song means alot to me on so many different levels and I love all the influences that have made their way in there.

Q8: “Up and Atom” では特に、Power Metal からの影響を感じました。

【FIVE ALBUMS】

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED BRETT’S LIFE!!

METALLICA “RIDE THE LIGHTNING”

Metallica_-_Ride_the_Lightning_cover-2

My Dad bought ReLoad, and it was the heaviest thing I’d ever heard. So being the 9-year-old I was, I wanted to hear more from this so-called “Metallica.” The album with the electric chair on the cover looked cool, so I got that one. I wasn’t ready… My poor 9-year-old ears were not ready to hear “Fight Fire with Fire.” I didn’t know what was going on. It was so fast that I could barely process it. After that, I needed faster and heavier. That’s where my love for metal started. Metallica will always be my favorite band. I also learned to play guitar by only learning Metallica songs. Downpick. Everything. Always.

THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN “CALCULATING INFINITY”

220px-CalculatingInfinity

I was perusing a music store one day. They had these scanners in the store where you could scan a barcode and listen to a 15 second preview of a song. The tubes on the cover looked cool. I scanned it. I heard whatever noise came out of those headphones, and just left the record store. I didn’t buy it. It was like I just witnessed some sort of tragedy, and I just needed to leave. I thought about this record for a week; how I needed to hear it again. I was pulled back to the record store, and I had to buy it because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I don’t even think I liked it yet, but I kept playing it over and over. At heart, I’m a drummer, and Chris Pennie’s playing on this album changed my playing forever. It also changed the way I thought about music.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME “THE SILENT CIRCUS”

220px-TheSilentCircus

This album is so important to me because they were heavy as hell but then went into beautifully sung parts. Tommy Rogers is incredible. He’s an amazing vocalist, and I love his lyrics. I strive to be more like him. The part that really grabbed me was the end of “Mordecai.” It’s beautiful, and I wish I wrote it. They made me realize it’s okay to bend genre barriers and make something your own.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA “IN KEEPING SECRETS OF SILENT EARTH:3”

In_Keeping_Secrets_of_Silent_Earth_3_cover

This album came out and initially didn’t do much for me. They were an “emo” band back then, and I didn’t care. I was too naive to realize their progressive brilliance. Eventually it clicked. Claudio Sanchez is a songwriter like no other. The riffs on that album are crushing, and it continuously flows into different emotional states. It’s perfect. They are all incredible musicians. Josh Eppard is one of my all time favorite drummers. That guy just knows how to groove and play something so simple and perfect. I admire his patience behind the kit. “The Crowing” will always be one of my favorite songs of all time.

ALCEST “LE SECRET”

Alcest_-_Le_Secret_(Reissue)

This was the first band that was doing something similar to what I wanted to do with Astronoid. It inspired me to create the band. I was at a local record shop, just looking around with Casey Aylward (Astronoid, Vattnet Viskar). I found an album that resembled a hardcover book. The artwork was absolutely breathtaking. I had never heard of the band. The EP was $18 and consisted of two songs. A little too expensive to take a chance on, so we left. Casey and I were driving away from the record store, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the album. I turned the car around and bought it. I put it straight in my CD player. The first track started, and it was cool. It sounded like black metal, but a little more emotional. Then the vocals came in… Casey and I looked at each other dumbfounded. Singing over black metal!? I instantly fell in love. I had been listening to Wolves in the Throne Room and Deafheaven’s Roads to Judah wishing for something like this. “Le Secret “ inspired me to write the song Astronoid. That EP is so important to me, and I’m really happy that I turned back for it. Astronoid probably wouldn’t exist without it.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM や DEAFHEAVEN の “Roads To Judah” なんかを聴いて来たね。”
