Sitar Fronted Instru-metal Four Piece From India, Mute The Saint Has Just Released Indian Classical Music Meets Modern Prog Metal Record “Mute The Saint” !!

DISC REVIEW “MUTE THE SAINT”

Q1: First of all, How did Mute the Saint come to be? And what’s the meaning behind your band name “Mute the Saint”?

【RISHABH】: I always wanted to create original music but for the Sitar-Metal thing,it had never been done before so I was a bit skeptical as to how would it be received. So I decided to cover pioneers like Animals As Leaders and Meshuggah before releasing my own music and to my absolute surprise it just not only broke the internet as they say,but changed everything in my life. They were so well received by the Metal community worldwide and even the bands themselves I had covered, that I just knew it was time to cement this vision of a Sitar-fronted Indian Classical-Progressive Metal band by forming one! I have always loved playing music with people.Indian Classical music is all about improvising and playing with the scales/notes and about the conversation between the musicians and their instruments,so rather than forming a solo project in which I could feature some big musician and idols of mine,I choose to form an actual band, with actual members going after that vision of creating something sonically unique and still being refered to as a ‘Band’ rather than a solo project.
MUTE THE SAINT was something I came up without and major thinking process being put into it,it just struck me right away.MUTE THE SAINT basically puts emphasis and shows the importance of ‘Silence’ meaning ‘Absence of words’ in this case. After spending a decade of listening to music with lyrics it occurred to me that there is actually nothing left to ‘Speak’ about, but there is a lot left to be felt.
I wanted to have a name that symbolized the aspect of Dedication,Sacrifice, knowledge and magic related to a saint, delivered in a fashion that was very ” un-worldy ” just like a saint.Since we were an instrumental band with no words, taking about auras, journeys and vibes through songs, without actually saying anything – Mute The Saint made perfect sense in this case!

MUTE THE SAINT

Q2: I interviewed with Skyharbor before, and they are now one of the most popular metal band from India, I think. How is the Indian metal / music scene?

【RISHABH】: Contrary to what you would hear 90 percent of Indian Metal musicians say,I think Indian Metal scene is just unbelievable – But only from the musical aspect.By that I mean that we have bands that can actually spiritually awake you! With their command, intensity, song writing, playing, performance and raw energy.Indian Bands like Undying Inc,Bhayanak Maut,Demonic Resurrection,Zygnema and The Down Troddence are a perfect example of what I just mentioned. It’s hard to believe that our bands do not get even a slight representation abroad in festivals etc., but I know for sure that the times will change and what is deserved shall be delivered to our incredible bands.
On the other hand,We just have like 6-7 festivals dedicated to this type of music,we have virtually no agencies,no touring market and no record label and everything you see happening is mostly DIY (Do It Yourself). It’s a very hard market up here and is mostly dominated by EDM,Alt Rock and Traditional and folk music. So it’s i would say difficult than the average to be a Metal band here but surprisingly everyone pulls it off by sheer hardwork. In the end,I am just very very confident that our scene is headed to rise!

Undying Inc, Bhayanak Maut, Demonic Resurrection, Zygnema.

Q3: So, Rishabh, what inspired you to start playing your own instrument Sitar? What do you like the instrument?

【RISHABH】: I hail from a traditonal Indian Classical music family.I am the 3rd Generation of Indian Classical Musicians from my family. My grand father Ust. Lachman Singh Seen,is a president-Awardee Tabla Maestro and my father -Guru(teacher) Pandit Manu Seen is a top-graded sitar Virtuoso from whom I have been learning the sitar since the past twelve years and continue to do so.So to me,music was always in the air and we had and still have almost all Indian instruments at home.I was left free to choose what I wanted to play but I can’t exactly point what it was about a sitar that struck me so deep, but I think it just was the voice I didn’t have for my soul, emotions and feelings.
Apart from that this instrument is a very royal looking instrument and is the only instrument in the world which can allow you to bend 4-5 notes per fret and so is very close to vocal, also can do anything and everything rhythmically and shred-wise haha!

Q4: The first time I knew you was playthrough movie of AAL cover. Your Sitar playing really blow my mind. Like Animals As Leaders, were modern technical guitarists one of your inspiration?

【RISHABH】: Guitar players have always influenced me.I mean simply the way they decorate their pedal boards, the way they give attention to the instrument itself, they way they have a childlike enthusiasm to every aspect of being a guitar player and obviously the sound and playing. To be quite honest,I wouldn’t name them but I had heard all front line legends of the guitar you can name and even some underground stuff but when I heard Tosin Abasi of AAL, it just was something that spoke to me on some other level. They way he approached the fret board, those mysterious melodies an his unique phrasing, i mean everything related to him re made me re-think everything I knew about Guitar-Playing and song-writing.I think it would be safe to say that Tosin is the first ever guitar player to influence a Sitar player, that is me haha!
So all in all,I am a huge fan of the guitar and guitar players for sure.
Modern progressive to me is just like Indian classical music, very forward thinking, can incorporate any other styles or instrument and still sound authentic and interesting and is a very dynamic form of music which has a huge melodic and rhythmic depth. That’s why I naturally feel the connection with Progressive Rock/Metal even after being a traditional Sitar Player .

Q5: What made you mix Djent, modern prog metal and traditional Indian music?

【RISHABH】: To keep it short and sweet, as I mentioned my love for guitars, guitar players and Prog itself, apart from that, I really wanted to show the richness, versatility and the modern-ness of a Traditional Sitar to the world.Since the past 7-8 years I had found that the Sitar had almost lost it’s intimidating glory because nothing that weird and interesting wasn’t being done with it and the use of ‘Electric Sitar’ which sounds exactly like a distorted guitar was growing so much that the young-youth had almost forgotten that there actually exists a Traditional Sitar with it’s raw look and sound.
I just wanted to bring back that intimidating glory back to this Traditional Sound and look of the Sitar by doing something that no-one had ever though of and in all respect – even put guitar players into thought!

Q6: What’s the concept or themes of your debut EP”Mute the Saint”?

【RISHABH】: I personally love to experience every song being a different vision and a story.I wanted to create an album which would leave the listener in a dilemma of how exactly to feel. After hearing the album you definitely will be uplifted and moved but there will be some mystery to exactly how you feel – For example the opening song of the album ‘Welcome The Change’ is a song about chaos and how it feels to be amidst chaos. This song represents a time of my life where just everything seemed breaking down and I thought i was loosing it all,but soon realized that it was a change for the good. Now a song called ‘Sound Of Scars’ is giving a sonic shape to the feeling helpless and opposite to the above mentioned songs, ‘The Fall Of Sirius’ is a song about celebration of yourself, what you stand for and your individuality and you can feel that while hearing the song.
So I personally wanted to give a sonic representation to Human feelings that are universal, rather than writing down and explaining a story you know because to me music should make you feel but also think and find answers you know? How good will it be if a song or an album can actually make you re think your purose, your situation, make you do something about it or atleast put thought in why something happened and so on.Every song on this album is a concept of its own and that’s the beauty of this album. You get to experience everything.Least saying that every song except Welcome The Change was written within a matter of 2-3 days maximum by me alone sitting in my bedroom, trying to immerse myself into all that I have experience and felt till now in life.

Sound of Scars” は絶望の音楽で、”Welcome the Change” とは逆だと言える。”The Fall of Sirius” は自分を褒める曲だよ。

Q7: I really love your sound of Sitar. You know, the quarter tone, microtonal sound is the feature of Indian folk music. But most of prog metal listeners aren’t familiar with that. Could you image such a good reactions from the beginning?

【RISHABH】: Not at all,but somewhere I knew that Progressive Music is just more than a genre,it is also a way of putting music together and taking about the bigger picture you know.So I definitely new this would be accepted, but honestly I had no idea that this would just blow up in front of such a huge audience. To be honest,I think of the million legendary bands that we have, we as a band are a choice to your taste. If you have a hundred guitar fronted bands, why not have one with the Sitar as the lead instrument ?
More than that,i think the album has cemented our vision of bridging these genres properly and definitely shows the potential this project has and Nothing brings me more excitement to imagine the future of this Project.I mean I am a 20 year old traditional Classical Sitar player, who has written a progressive Metal album and brought it infront of an audience that includes the pioneers of these genre appreciating it as well – So I can’t ask for more, but I shall never stop.

Q8: What’s the goal of Mute the Saint? Is there any possibility of adding vocals or some other ethnic instruments?

【RISHABH】: The foremost goal of Mute The Saint is to definitely be that one unique Metal band Fronted by a Sitar for the first time ever as a lead instrument and then bridge Indian Classical and Progressive Metal music, but apart from that I think whatever I do is just signifying a new way of making music and leaving all the tags behinds.I mean in the last 12 years of being a touring Indian Classical musician,I never ever met even a single classicalmusic who loved or spoke about metal or prog and it was so weird to me.And the same goes for Metal musicians who never payed attention to Indian Classical music and I personally always say a huge potential if these two sounds could be merged but I obviously doubted my capabilities. But Low and behold,I took a deep breath, trusted my vision and it changed everything.
Mute The Saint also symbolizes the way music is being created and sounds and instruments are being bridged. I mean the 4 members of the band have never met in real life, we all stay in different states of India and our Guitar player is in the U.S. – So its an achievement in itself to create a record this unique and historical by not actually meeting. Therefore,I think Mute The Saint is something bigger than just being an instrumental band – It’s a bridge between two genres, and even cultures coming together to create a huge sonic potential and create something beautiful.

MUTE THE SAINT
