“Sometimes I’ll Discover Some Cool Voicings While Working On a Jazz Tune And I’ll Try To Manipulate Them In a Certain Way So That It Fits Into The Metal Framework Better.”

DISC REVIEW “THE OUTER ONES”

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME

REVOCATION “THE OUTER ONES” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID DAVIDSON

Q1: Hello, David! “The Outer Ones” is definitely the most death metal record for you. And also it explores death metal’s “The Outer Space” deeply. Do you agree that?

【DAVID】: Yes, it’s easily our most cosmic and death metal record to date. We wanted to go in a darker and heavier direction for this release and I’m glad everyone has taken notice.

Q2: “The Outer Ones” is off course ultra-technical, but is not difficult to digest, and catchy melody flows all through the album. That’s why your music attracts wide variety of audiences. When you were writing “The Outer Ones”, did you keep in mind for the balance between technique and ear-candy?

【DAVID】: Yeah we want to write well thought out songs and strong melodies first and foremost. While our music can be very technical at times, we also allow sections to breathe so that there’s some contrast. Every riff we write has intent behind it, we’re very mindful of how sections flow into one another and how each song fits into the bigger picture of the album as a whole.

Q3: Also, when I listen to “The Outer Ones” deeply, I notice your big love of Jazz and prog music from chord voicing, epic structure. In your writing process, how do you mix them with death metal’s aggression?

【DAVID】: I think it’s something that comes naturally for me. I spend a lot of time working on my jazz vocabulary so it’s been seeping into my writing and playing style more and more. Sometimes I’ll discover some cool voicings while working on a jazz tune and I’ll try to manipulate them in a certain way so that it fits into the metal framework better. The overall rhythm of jazz has had an affect on my playing as well because I’ve noticed we’ll use a lot of triplets that have a more bouncing feel, not quite swinging but maybe swinging by metal’s standards.

Q4: Regarding Jazz, you seem to be guitar teacher when you are not touring, right? Do you think teaching makes you grow up as a guitar player?

【DAVID】: For sure, I’ve learned so much from teaching over the years and it forces me to stay sharp with my playing and my theory. I also teach some students that are capable of learning some pretty advanced stuff so I can bring harder pieces to the lessons which might benefit the student in one area and myself in another. A lot of my students ask great questions, when you’re forced to explain something you have to test your knowledge of the subject right on the spot, that helps me as well because I feel like I have to always be learning in order to be a good teacher.

Q5: So, speaking of Jazz, prog, maybe I think Cynic and Death are definitely pioneer of mixture in death metal field. Could you please talk about their influences?

【DAVID】: Death was a huge influence on me, but while I respect what Cynic did for the genre I was really influenced by them directly. I think I fell more into the “Death” end of the spectrum because they were more aggressive, I also found the lineup changes to be intriguing since there were different eras of Death where their sound would change up a bit. The first band I played with even did a Death cover set for Halloween way back in the day where we played a song off every record. If I had to pick a favorite record it would have to be “Symbolic” the songs were perfect on that record and I was also floored by the playing of Bobby Koelble. He has an incredibly unique style and as a soloist he was able to blend metal and jazz phrasing in a totally interesting way. Listening to his solos on that album really inspired me and definitely got the gears turning in my head on how I could incorporate similar ideas into my sound.

Q6: It seems you uses your big love of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror stories as an allegory for societal critiques, right? Why are you attracted by his works?

【DAVID】: I love the whole universe of horror that he created. There’s multiple deities and creatures present throughout his stories that are all bound together in some way by his over arching mythos. He has an interesting writing style as well, sometimes he’s incredibly specific in his descriptions, other times he’s intentionally vague so that the reader’s own imagination can fill in the blanks. I do appreciate the allegorical nature of his works as well, there’s lessons to be learned about humans trying to dabble with forces that they cannot control and end up unleashing hell in the process.

Q7: Also, I read deep into your lyrics, it looks you think there is so much crisis happening in the world, right? Could you please tell us about the problem of the world?

【DAVID】: Greed and self interest motivates a lot of the suffering in the world. The human species is often prone to tribalism which tends to create strong, polarizing divides in society. I’m seeing the full effects of that right now here in America with what’s happening between the Republicans and Democrats, it feels like I’m living in two separate countries with completely different sets of values. The divides can either create gridlock or a total imbalance of power which particularly concerns me when it comes to policies that directly affect society. One of the biggest threats humanity faces currently is climate change so we all need to shed ourselves of this tribalism and learn to work together globally to come up with solutions to prevent this impending disaster.

Q8: So, Like Rivers of Nihil, Archspire, lot’s of new talents of Tech-metal are rising these days. Off course, you have toured with them, what’s your thought about new comer’s musical challenges?

【DAVID】: Well there’s been so much great music written over the years so there’s obviously a challenge to be original and find your own voice in the genre. However, I think the main challenge comes from just trying to stay afloat financially. You have to make sure you’re on top of your spending and are wise with your money because it’s really easy to stack up debt since there’s so many expenses associated with touring. You need to run your band like a business if you want to be in this for the long term.
