NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【FREAK KITCHEN : CONFUSION TO THE ENEMY】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH MATTIAS “IA” EKLUNDH OF FREAK KITCHEN !!

“I Think The Change Of Music Industry Is a Brave New World With Tons Of Opportunities. You Can’t Sit Home And Complain It Was Better Before. Adjust Or Die.”

DISC REVIEW “CONFUSION TO THE ENEMY”

FREAK KITCHEN “CONFUSION TO THE ENEMY” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH MATTIAS “IA” EKLUNDH

Q1: Hello, Mattias! This is second interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about yourself? You joined Fate at the age of 20, and your ultra-technique, Japanese radio-cassette amp surprised the world. But what kind of childhood did you have had until that time?

【MATTIAS】: I think I had a pretty good childhood in many ways. My parents always supported the frantic musical ways of the young Mattias Eklundh, something I am forever grateful for. I started bashing away on drums at an early age and to this very day I think guitar players need to get a better rhythmic grip and understanding. Too much focus on guitar solos in this business.

Q2: In Japanese Burrn! magazine’s interview, Sentenced from Finland said “In Scandinavia, you only have to watch television, play music, or kill yourself.”, do you agree that? haha. I mean, you definitely chose playing guitar, and become real guitar hero now. But were you into shredders like Yngwie, Vai, Van Halen, Macalpine, Nuno, Satriani along with Zappa?

【MATTIAS】: Yes, of course. I have listened to the same guys as everybody else and was floored by Van Halen, Malmsteen, Vai and the rest of them legends when I started out. And yeah, Scandinavia can be harsh at times but I adore our climate and change of seasons. Without nature I wouldn’t function. It’s raining like crazy right now and I keep the studio door open a bit so I don’t miss a thing.

Q3: How did you create your own guitar realm from there? What kind of practices did you do at that time? Meshuggah’s drum master Tomas Haake says he rarely practises now. How about you?

【MATTIAS】: Without sounding arrogant I must confess I never really practiced. I have played a lot but always with the intent of making music and coming up with ideas. I loathe the metronome and believe in my legs to keep time in a more natural way. I still play a lot and have been noodling around on my precious Apple Horn 8 neck today looking for what is lurking around the corner from a songwriting perspective. Creating something out of nothing is still the ultimate kick. Practice routines are not.

Q4: You lived in Copenhagen in your Fate era, and learned about touring, music business, and industry. It seems that made you choose almost DIY way, right? Internet, SNS, Streaming service have changed music industry a lot recently. What’s your perspective about the change?

【MATTIAS】: For me personally it has only been a blessing. I think it is great to make actual copies of your music because it important to manifest your work into something physical but the money certainly comes from downloads and streaming and it isn’t bad at all. I think it is a brave new world with tons of opportunities. You can’t sit home and complain it was better before. Adjust or die.

Q5: OK, let’s talk about your new record “Confusion to the Enemy”. As artwork shows, I feel it’s darker and more serious record than your past works. Do you agree that? What’s “the Enemy” to you?

【MATTIAS】: Time is the worst enemy as it is the only true capital we have. I would say the record is both dark and light. It has, at least to me, some highlights in the title track and a bunch of other songs I am proud of. Not everything can be top notch but it is a tremendous success every time you have nailed and wrapped up the production of an album. If people like it, it’s even more satisfying, needless to say. The response so far has been overwhelming.

Q6: “Auto”, “The Era of Anxiety” is especially, but all through the album, blues and 70’s vintage, dark rock sound is definitely key to “Confusion to the Enemy”, right? Off course, these elements aren’t normal blues style, I mean you mixed blues and your own sounds in a unique way. But what made you open the door to blues and vintage rock this time?

【MATTIAS】: Haha, I like that you hear vintage rock and blues in the music. No one ever told me that before but I really see your point. When it comes to writing songs I have no formula but do what feels right and blend any ingredient I like in. So… although I may be the worst blues player on the planet, you may be right. But it is all unintentional.

Q6: “Auto”, “The Era of Anxiety”

Q7: Along with the “Change”, your guitar playing seems to go to new realm. I really love your bottle neck like gimmick, maybe horse crip and organic sounds. OK, what was your new “gimmick” or brand new challenge in the guitar playing?

【MATTIAS】: I do fake a little bottleneck on a tune or two. There are sounds from my Volvo (steering wheel, doors, hood) on Auto and other things I felt the need to use to decorate the songs properly. You do what you do. Don’t think too hard and overanalyze. Sometimes you are great. Sometimes you are downright terrible. It’s life.

Q8: Title track is really complex, sometimes catchy, and sometimes ambient, and sometimes aggressive. Polyrhythm is one of your trade mark, but this song reminds me Meshuggah’s ferocity. Actually, you and Fredrik Thordendal are from the same country and also generations are close too. So, can you relate to their musical endeavor?

【MATTIAS】: Fredrik is a friend and Meshuggah certainly is an amazing band with no equals. I tried to paint with many different colors on Confusion To The Enemy. It is most likely one of my five top Freak Kitchen songs of all time because it is creating a vibe… and that’s what I go for. I made the mix in Copenhagen late one evening early summer with the lovely Tor Bach Kristensen, left it overnight and bounced it in the morning. I was so happy and still am, I managed to flesh out the true meaning, the core, of the track somehow. It was a slippery one and didn’t have a clear structure. I told Bjorn and Chris I needed to let the track take me where it needed to go. Took a good while.

MATTIAS’S RECENT FAVORITE ALBUMS

Lots of game soundtracks. Dead inspiring stuff. (I would love to write for a video game one of these years). I listen to jazz and classical music, old and contemporary. Lots of crooner music; Dean Martin, Sinatra. AC/DC are always something I return to and am plain ecstatic Angus has gathered the forces again. I am such a rabid fan of Phil Rudd’s drumming it’s ridiculous.
