NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【NOSOUND : ALLOW YOURSELF】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH GIANCARLO ERRA OF NOSOUND !!

“I’ve Never Been a Fan Of Being Very Good Or Even Virtuoso Or Any Instrument, I Hate Any Virtuoso Or Technical Playing, I Like Instead Emotions, That Are Always Simple And Direct.”

DISC REVIEW “ALLOW YOURSELF”

NOSOUND “ALLOW YOURSELF” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH GIANCARLO ERRA

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about the band and yourself? What kind of music were you listen to, when you were growing up?

【GIANCARLO】: I grown up listening mainly to Beatles, electronic music (Schulze, Brian Eno) and soundtracks. Since I was a kid I had in the house a cheap keyboard and a guitar, so I remember being always curious to re-play what I was hearing. As a teenager in the mid 90s I got then into grunge and rock or metal, I started listening to Pink Floyd as well as a union between the soundtrack world and the rock one, and that is an influence that is quite clear in my first two albums. With time though I moved then to post-rock, and back to my origins, going for simpler songwriting, and more electronic/soundtrack and minimalist structures. Today with the streaming services is fantastic as I can discover new music every single day, so my listening taste became much wider and more eclectic, and definitely that helped going away from some clear influences on early albums and going on to develop my own music language.

Q2: So, Giancarlo, you are kind of all-rounder, utility player. Because you can sing, compose, play guitar and keyboard. What inspired you to be multi-player?

【GIANCARLO】: I’ve always been not keen on studying music theory and stuff, I always wanted to hear sounds without the knowledge, so I always developed my skills playing only by ear, and so I do today, and on all instruments. Sure with time you anyway start getting some basic notions, just because you play, but I was always more interested in being able to create all the sound I need on my own. I like to write in solitude, and I always have very clear ideas and mostly complete songs in my head, so I need a way to grab an instrument and just play and record my idea before it goes away. In my studio I have guitars, drums, bass, synths, everything is ready in a few seconds to be played and recorded. I’ve never been a fan of being very good or even virtuoso or any instrument, I hate any virtuoso or technical playing, I like instead emotions, that are always simple and direct, so I always invested and studied to learn what I needed for every instrument.

Q3: Nosound is kind of ironic name, because your sound is really impressive and memorable. What made you choose the name?

【GIANCARLO】: That irony was definitely one of the elements, and I somehow liked the idea of a short name, that was not a proper word but clear enough to be clear in its meaning. It happened as a joke, but then I stick with and is now here after 15 years!

Q4: Ok, let’s talk about your newest record “Allow Yourself”. Actually, there is a drastic change in this record, and it seems you left behind your early influences, prog categorization. I think that’s why you had to allow yourself literally. Do you agree that?

【GIANCARLO】: Yes absolutely, it was a process I started already in the past, I think since A Sense Of Loss I wanted this, but it was very linear from album to album. In Scintilla I think I embraced it a bit more, but I was missing the last bit…myself! I needed to commit to it without fear, to really get out of my comfort zones or whatever the others expect from my music, and I did. It was not easy, but once done is a liberation that opens hundreds of other doors. I personally think that apart from some songs in first two albums, we never were prog (just lazily categorised like that because of the record label we’re on like other acts on it that are not prog either). I never even really liked the music a listener! So yeah Allow Yourself is a the same time the result of a path that started a few years ago, and the big step that was needed to be the start of something different and more “Nosound” than anything we did in the past.

Q5: Definitely, you found a new balance between organic and electronic sounds, also moved to more minimalistic realm, stepped away from rock structures. What made you evolve this new direction?

【GIANCARLO】: Very simply the fact that in the last decade or so that’s the kind of music I listen to and like the most! Apart from my teenage years, I’ve never been a huge fan of rock, or even less classic rock or prog rock, so after the start of Nosound as a teenager I then wanted to shift and move my own music in the direction I like. I write mainly for myself, so I need to be the one liking the music I do. I always like every album I do, and I always feel is the best, but then when time pass I realise I didn’t make it just exactly as I wanted…with time and arrangements, I slowly shifted again towards my comfort zone made of guitars and more rock arrangements (even if art rock).
I needed to really allow myself to do what I wanted, and take all necessary steps to be able to do so (from studio equipment used to production techniques to singing and playing technique), and I did it!

Q6: It seems David Bowie’s “Blackstar” and Radiohead’s “A Moon Shaped Pool” became huge inspiration of “Allow Yourself”, right?

【GIANCARLO】: Yes probably two of the best albums I discovered in recent years, and definitely probably the only two by big names. What I love of these two albums is that they come from people who could have easily been doing what they were doing before as well. Instead they decided to go for something new, breaking through, and that’s what I do really admire, and in both cases although very different albums, they achieved their best work in their careers I think. That’s the spirit, always pushing, not caring what fans or people expect.

Q7: “Numb and blind. Your laugh is my drug”. “My Drug” is my favorite track. Definitely, it’s just emotional… Anyway, which song shows the band’s evolution the most in this record?

【GIANCARLO】: I personally think My Drug represents the new part mostly for the lyrics and singing, while other tracks like Ego Drip or Shelter or Defy are the most daring musically speaking. Together with songs like Saviour are what represents a new direction, showing the emotional content of this music (that was always there) in a different light, that is now even more powerful. As first reviews started arriving, I noticed (with pleasure!) they were even more polarised than Scintilla. The prog people and zines really didn’t get it, as they seem to be unable to get music unless it’s rock/virtuoso/guitar/boombastic based. While all newcomers from other parts of rock or just other kinds of music, really loved it, and they actually were able to go to the essence of any music or form of art: that is feelings, not the music (or the form of art) itself.

Q8: So, your record label Kscope is kind of symbol of “Post-progressive”. Do you think you are still “Post-progressive” band even now? What’s “progressive” to you?

【GIANCARLO】: As I said before, I think we never were, and even less now. What I like is that Kscope as well decided to go over that world and definition, they welcomed my new album and they are also signing more acts outside of that world. Although the genre was born for music that was defying music genres, it became after the 70s the most closed minded kind of music…from being something that should progress, it became something that only accepts music made in the ‘progressive’ way. For me progressive means all modern classical and electronic and non rock and non guitar music, the minimalist, everything that defies previous categorisations. But I’m aware this is not what people expect, so I simply don’t care about what they expect or what they want to listen to or call us, I just do my music, and Allow Yourself is what it is, they like it or not, haha.

GIANCARLO’S LIFE CHANGING ALBUMS

DAVID BOWIE “BLACKSTAR”

TOOL “AENIMA”

PINK FLOYD “THE DIVISION BELL”

Not very easy honestly…because I change my listening tastes a lot, and what I thought were albums that changed my life, they became at some point albums I was really bored of…so I really don’t know! Probably Blackstar is one of those, then I could say Aenima from Tool and The Division Bell by Pink Floyd because I was a teenager and they made me discover a completely new world, but really is difficult for me. Also I’ve always been much more a song guy than an album guy, I love vinyls and have only vinyls and I listen to full albums, but are the songs I’m interested into, not the concept (I actually get bored very soon of albums with a “concept” or even more if fictional stories etc.).

あとは、TOOL の “Aenima” と PINK FLOYD の “The Division Bell”。

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

Japan is a country I’ve always missed visiting to play, I know my music could have a good impact there, but is not very easy somehow to reach with promotion from here, so I was really pleased and grateful to receive your request for an interview. I can only encourage Japanese fans to contact us, share our music, and let us know where we could come and play..the more you guys make our music well known, the more we’ll be able to fly over there and make a special gig for you all!
