EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH KELLY SCHILLING OF DREADNOUGHT !!

“The Term “Female Fronted” Sensationalizes Women And Turns Us Into a Gimmick. We Are All Human Beings Creating Sound And Gender Shouldn’t Be The Focal Point. “

DISC REVIEW “EMERGENCE”

DREADNOUGHT “EMERGENCE” : 10/10

INTERVIEW WITH KELLY SCHILLING

Q1: This is the first interview with you. So, at first, could you tell us about your band and yourself? What kind of music were you listening to, when you were growing up?

【KELLY】: Dreadnought is a metal band from Denver, CO USA that we describe as eclectic and ethereal, bringing together elements of progressive metal, black metal, folk, doom, jazz, and post metal (to name a few genres). We write music that speaks to us and naturally flows from us. We all come from different musical backgrounds and influences, I myself grew up passing through a few different phases. By the time I reached middle school, I was introduced to hard rock and nu metal, and as I grew into high school, I became more interested in heavy and dark music. I have been expanding my musical interests ever since.

【KELLY】: DREADNOUGHT

Q2: There are not so much metal band having two male and two female. How did the band come to be?

【KELLY】: The band formed about 7 years ago after our first bands were at a bit of a stand still. Jordan, Kevin, and I were playing together in a band called Kastigation and Lauren in Recondite. After having a few guitarist changes in Kastigation and re-connecting with Lauren, we decided we wanted to try a different lineup and asked if she would be interested in working with us. She said yes and the new project was born.

Q3: So, Dreadnought has some multiplayers like drums and sax, guitar and flute, bass and mandolin. When you started the band and get members together, was it important for you?

【KELLY】: The woodwinds and mandolin were secondary, we had previously been playing in other metal bands so we were used to playing instruments in your traditional metal set up (guitar, bass, drums), but since a couple of us had been playing woodwinds for a large chunk of our life, we wanted to include them in our writing. I was inspired by the folk metal movement as a teen and other metal that included non traditional instrumentation, so I naturally wanted to include flute and Jordan also wanted to include his saxophone. When Lauren joined the band and Dreadnought began, we found that keyboards really gave space for other instrumentation.

Q4: Sometimes you are called like prog-doom, or progressive post-blackdoom band, haha. What’s your perspective about the tags?

【KELLY】: We recognize it is difficult to put our music in a box, we aren’t precisely prog doom or post black doom, but we have elements of prog, black metal, doom metal. We are progressive in our songwriting, but the tags do not describe us fully and are limiting. People who read any of these terms will automatically have an idea in their head of what it sounds like, but we don’t really fit into that box. I would prefer that people listen to us without considering those blanket terms, but I understand it is also difficult to describe a band without them. Jordan likes to think of us as space metal, but even that term may give someone the wrong impression. Music is expanding more and more beyond genre descriptions these days, there is a lot of mixing and experimentation so perhaps these genre terms should only be taken as a rough guideline.

Q5: OK, let’s talk about your newest record “Emergence”. As the artwork shows, it seems this record resonates with elements of flame, right? Could you tell us about the concept or lyrical themes of “Emergence”?

【KELLY】: You are correct! It does resonate with elements of flame. The album is about transforming oneself through trials and tribulations. We begin the record with a catastrophic event, then telling the tale of all the emotions we may feel when enduring an event so emotionally heavy, specifically anxiety, shock, and resentment. As the album moves forward, the theme moves forward towards a place of understanding. Instead of resentment and anger, we now tell the tale of feeling acceptance and ownership. The album closes with a song of reflection and forward motion. We can now move forward, create a new path for ourselves, and transform from where we once came.

Q6: Ten minutes over “prog heaven” is kind of trademark of Dreadnought. “Emergence” includes 3 ten minutes over songs. Is it natural for you to make long epics?

【KELLY】: It is natural, we write a piece until we feel it is complete regardless of how long or short it may end up being. 10 minutes just happens to be the average song length we end up with.

Q7: I think this is the most powerful and most eclectic record in your works. Also, this is a “time machine” of rock music, because we can find from Kate Bush to Karnivool. It seems you covered long history of rock. But what made you mix classic rock and modern metal?

【KELLY】: Thank you! I don’t think we ever intended to mix the two together, but we happened to due to our backgrounds and musical tastes. Some of us grew up with classic rock and prog rock as well as modern metal and by having those influences, we automatically include them both without really thinking too much about it.

Q8: When I had an interview with Larissa from Venom Prison, she said “I don’t like the term “female fronted” though because it creates some sort of sub-genre that is solely based on the gender of the front person disregarding the kind of music is being produced by bands that have female vocalists. I find it quite limiting and counterproductive.” Do you agree with her?

【KELLY】: I do agree with her. The term “Female Fronted” continues to separate women from men in the music industry instead of bringing us together as equals. It is counterproductive, as it brings focus to the bands gender rather than their music. I can see how the intention of using that term may have originally been to raise the status of women in the community of metal musicians, that it was trying to bring to light that there are talented women in metal, that it isn’t only a boys club, but instead, the term sensationalizes women and turns us into a gimmick. We are all human beings creating sound and gender shouldn’t be the focal point.

THREE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED KELLY’S LIFE

MOONSORROW “V: HAVITETTY”

OPETH “GHOST REVERIES”

ULVER “BLOOD INSIDE”

When I was younger, Linkin Park, Children of Bodom, Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, and Dimmu Borgir were heavy influences on me and part of the reason why I explored further into heavy music.
