NEW DISC REVIEW + INTERVIEW 【SCOTT HENDERSON : PEOPLE MOVER】

EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT HENDERSON !!

“There’s Nothing Sadder Than Young Guitar Players Who Only Listen To Heavy-metal. There’s So Much Great Music Out There To Learn From, And It’s Unbelievable To Me That Someone Would Stick To Listening To Only One Style. It’s Like Being In Musical Prison.”

DISC REVIEW “PEOPLE MOVER”

SCOTT HENDERSON “PEOPLE MOVER” : 9.9/10

INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT HENDERSON

Q1: “People Mover” is definitely incredible, maybe kind of a culmination of your career. Jazz/Fusion and Funk/Blues is mixed naturally and seamlessly. Was that your musical goal of this record?

【SCOTT】: I don’t really have any specific goals when I sit down to write for an album. My only hope is that my playing has improved and I have some new vocabulary since my last album. Also, I’m sure I’m somewhat influenced by the music I hear, and I listen to just about everything. I’ve actually been listening to classical music more than usual so maybe that had something to do with the writing on this album.

Q2: I really love the “guitar spaceship” artwork and I feel it has 70’s feeling strongly. Does it reflects the concept of “People Mover”?

【SCOTT】: I try to create artwork which fits the title cut of the album. I’m a big science-fiction fan and I think People Mover is a futuristic sounding title. I’m writing instrumental music so I don’t have song titles before I write the song – I listen to the music after it’s done and see if it reminds me of anything. The song People Mover reminds me of travel, so I thought a spaceship in the shape of a guitar would be a cool cover. I bought a cheap Squire Strat and my daughter and I decorated it with model parts from the Millennium Falcon. The artist did the rest in Photoshop. I’m really happy with the way it came out.

Q3: So, you have almost 40 year’s career, and have got so many guitar awards. But is there any new challenge in guitar technique or sound making you explore in “People Mover”?

【SCOTT】: It’s always a challenge to come up with new ideas and new sounds that I haven’t used on previous albums. I definitely went pedal shopping and found some really cool ones which are more on the unusual side. I’m a gearhead so I love experimenting in the studio with different tones. The most difficult thing is finding the right place in the music for each sound effect.

Q4: I first knew you was amazing Tribal Tech’s “Illicit”. And that record changed my musical perspective strongly. Tribal Tech released “X” in 2011, and came to Japan in 2013. Was that Tribal Tech’s “Swan song”?

【SCOTT】: Thanks, I’m proud of most of the stuff I did with Tribal Tech, but In my opinion the only innovative thing we did was jamming in the studio with no pre-written music and then turning those jams into compositions in post production. I don’t think any other band did that, so for me it’s our most important accomplishment.

Q5: Maybe, “Dog Party” was kind of a milestone for you. You parted ways with your trademark Jazz/fusion style, and explored Blues and Blues rock. But what made you so at that time?

【SCOTT】: The reason I made Dog Party wasn’t so much because of blues, but because of how much fun it is to go into the studio and play live to tape with no overdubbing and intricate gear. At the time, Tribal Tech was recording very complex albums with multiple keyboard tracks and midi synced to tape – kind of a technical nightmare. Dog Party allowed me to make a good old-fashioned vintage style album and play the music I grew up with. It really was like having a party!

【SCOTT】: “Dog Party”

Q6: Almost 10 years explore Blues, musically, personally, what did you find? And what made you come back to Jazz/Fusion realm?

【SCOTT】: I don’t really think about it much. My roots are in blues so I’ll always love that music, but I get bored playing any one style of music for very long. I love many styles of music for different reasons. The soul and feeling of blues, the harmony and expressive interplay of jazz, the feeling in my body from playing funk, the power of rock and roll, the beauty of composition in classical music and progressive rock – it all makes me happy.

Q7: We lost Alan Holdsworth, and lot’s of Jazz Giants are getting older. On the other hands, like Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, lot’s of new talents come to the scene. What’s your perspective about “Jazz is dead” thing?

【SCOTT】: There are many new jazz artists coming up who are really great. Kids are starting to learn jazz at a much earlier age and the bar keeps getting raised. My friend Bruce Forman teaches at USC, and some of his students are in their early 20s and playing as good as anyone. I don’t think jazz is dead, though I find jazz composition to be somewhat of a lost art. Many great new players, but not many great writers that I’ve heard.

Q8: So, you are also teacher at MI. When young guitarists want to be professional guitar player, is there any advice for them?

【SCOTT】: The best advice I have for any young guitarist is to transcribe. You can’t learn in a bubble, you have to learn from all the great musicians who came before us. It’s also very important to be open minded and listen to more than one style of music. There’s nothing sadder than young guitar players who only listen to heavy-metal. There’s so much great music out there to learn from, and it’s unbelievable to me that someone would stick to listening to only one style. It’s like being in musical prison.

FIVE ALBUMS THAT CHANGED SCOTT’S LIFE

WEATHER REPORT “TRAIL SPINNIN'”

MAHAVISHUNU ORCHESTRA “BIRDS OF FIRE”

GENTLE GIANT “POWER AND THE GLORY”

LED ZEPPELIN “LED ZEPPELIN Ⅱ”

TOWER OF POWER “TOWER OF POWER”

What is Hip” とか “Soul Vaccination” みたいな曲があるからね。SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE の “Flesh” も影響は大きいね。

Weather Report “Tailspinnin” was the first jazz fusion album I ever heard and is still one of my favorite records. Since then I’ve become a fan of many Weather Report albums, and having the opportunity to play with Joe Zawinul was one of the highlights of my career. Mahavishnu Orchestra “Birds Of Fire” was very important for me because it was the first time I’d ever heard jazz fusion guitar. John McLaughlin is a legendary guitarist and someone I’ve looked up to for a long time, not just for his playing but because he’s also a great composer. Gentle Giant “Power And The Glory” is a progressive rock album that had a big influence on me. I also love Yes, but Gentle Giant is closer to actual classical music. The mixing of classical and rock has influenced me throughout my whole career. Led Zeppelin II is one of my all-time favorite albums and I still believe think that they were the greatest rock band of all time. Even though I love other rock guitarists like Richie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix, I don’t think any band has a catalog of music as great as Led Zeppelin. The last album is very difficult because I love funk and R&B. The album “Tower Of Power” was really important to me because of the songs “What Is Hip” and “Soul “Vaccination”, both amazing songs. Sly and the Family Stone “Fresh” was also a big influence on me. The song “In Time” is one of the funkiest songs ever recorded. Also everything James Brown ever recorded, and I’m also a huge fan of Beyoncé.

MESSAGE FOR JAPAN

My CD’s are available in Japan through P-Vine Records, and I’ll be playing at the Cotton Club in Tokyo on October 11 and 12, 2019. I’m really looking forward to coming there and having delicious Japanese food! I live in Los Angeles and many people say that the Japanese food here is as good as in Japan. That is definitely not true.
