DISC REVIEW “HEROES OF MIGHTY MAGIC”
Twilight Kingdom から現れた、Adventure Metal の使者 TWILIGHT FORCE が待望の2ndアルバム “Heroes of Mighty Magic” をリリースしました！！ここ日本でも、その独特でヒロイックなパフォーマンス、コスチュームが話題となっているバンドですが、音楽的にも格段に進化を遂げた作品は、彼らの地位を確固たるものにするでしょう。
インタビューでは、頑なにメンバー、いや6人のヒーローたちは Twilight Kingdom から現れたと語っていますが、後半では Falun がホームタウンだと口を滑らせていますので、おそらくはスウェーデンに Twilight Kingdom への扉が存在するのでしょう。とにかく、TWILIGHT FORCE は OPETH や IN FLAMES を輩出したメタルキングダム、スウェーデンが生んだ新たな才能です。最近では SABATON が自らのフェスを主催するほどの人気ですが、TWILIGHT FORCE は公私共に同郷である SABATON の兄弟分的な存在でもありますね。
映画 “The Lord of the Rings” から抜け出してきたかのような出で立ちの6人のヒーローは、実際 Power Metal というジャンルを救う救世主なのかも知れません。BLIND GUARDIAN, SONATA ARCTICA, RHAPSODY といったバンドが全盛だった2000年あたりをピークに、このジャンルに対する注目度は減退し続けて来たように思います。そこには、ある意味、型に拘る様式美の限界が存在したのかも知れませんね。
TWILIGHT FORCE の “Adventure Metal” はしかし、インタビューにもあるように、その停滞を打ち破る ｢Power Metal の最も洗練された強烈な表現法であり、進化の頂点｣ だと言えます。確かにデビュー作 “Tales of Ancient Prophecies” にはキラリと光る才能の片鱗こそ多分に散りばめられてはいましたが、サウンドやコンポジションにまだまだ垢抜けない部分も少なからず存在していました。しかし、Nuclear Blast というビッグディールを得て臨んだ長尺コンセプトアルバム “Heroes of Mighty Magic” にはまさに Blackwald の言葉を具現化した、極上のエピックワールドが広がっているのです。
進化の頂点たる所以は、Blackwald が語るように、その作曲方法にあるのかも知れません。ピアノから取り掛かり、ほぼ完成形まで進めてから他の楽器を導入するという彼らのやり方は、このジャンルにおいては非常に珍しいように思います。しかし、確かに旋律、ハーモニー、リズムを同時に考慮可能なピアノは、一元的なギターやドラムスから始めるよりも豊かな可能性が存在するようにも思えますね。
そしてその手法から生み出された、時にプログレッシブとも言えるほど非常に緻密で複雑なコンポジションは、格段に進歩したサウンドプロダクションの下、洗練されたオーケストレーション、勇壮でファンタジックなメロディー/クワイア、モダンなテクニックを内包することとなりました。その一方で、Power Metal の鋳型的な部分、特にクラシカルな要素を減退させ、代わりにフォークメタルのエッセンスを吸収することで、見事に映画やロールプレイングゲームのサウンドトラックに接近した独自の斬新なる Power Metal Symphony を完成させたのです。
勿論、アルバムはオープナー “Battle of Arcane Might” から疾走感とカタルシス、そしてシンガロングを誘発する魅惑の旋律を70分に渡って欠かすことはありません。ただ、ANGRA の Fabio Lione が参加した “There and Back Again”, SABATON の Joakim Broden が参加したタイトルトラック “Heroes of Mighty Magic” は共に10分に迫るドラマティックな1大エピックで、この2曲の構成力、スケール感こそ、まさにアルバムを象徴する楽曲と言えるのではないでしょうか。
今回、Blackwald が “人生を変えた5枚のアルバム”のトップに挙げている作品が BLIND GUARDIAN の “Nightfall in Middle-Earth” なのですが、実は完成した “Heroes of Mighty Magic” を初めて聴いた時、Blackwald は “Nightfall in Middle-Earth” を初めて聴いた時と似た感覚を覚えたそうです。
“Nightfall in Middle-Earth” も “The Lord of the Rings” の作者、トールキンの小説を下にしたファンタジックでエピックな長尺コンセプトアルバム。BLIND GUARDIAN が1998年に提示したのは、非常に緻密かつシネマティックな Power Metal を超えた異形の傑作でしたが、TWILIGHT FORCE は “Power Metal の守護者” の意思をしっかりと受け継ぎながら、現代的にアップデートした作品を閃かし、シーンに投げかけたようにも感じられました。

北欧エピックドゥームの巨人、CANDLEMASS が Loud Park 2016 で遂に初来日を果たします！！
唯一無二のボーカル Messiah Marcolin を擁し、哀愁漂う北欧の叙情性とドゥームを見事にミックスさせた、彼らの金字塔にしてシーンのマイルストーン、”Nightfall”, “Ancient Dreams”, “Tales of Creation” から、SOLITUDE AETURNUS の実力派 Robert Lowe を起用した近年の強力な正統派路線まで、CANDLEMASS は常にシーンの先頭に立ち、独自の存在感を発揮し続けて来ましたね。
2012年にリリースされた “Psalm For The Dead” は彼らの最後のアルバムとして制作されましたが、後に、バンドのベーシストでソングライター、絶対的リーダーの Leif Edling が ｢歳をとりすぎて、不完全な作品しか作れなくなるまでは止めない｣ と発言し、CANDLEMASS は存続するかのようにも思われました。ところが思わぬ不幸がバンドに降りかかります。
Lowe が脱退するも、Yngwie Malmsteen, THERION などで勇名を馳せ、”King of the Grey Islands” のデモで歌うなどバンドとも長年関わってきた Mats Leven の加入でラインナップはより強化されていた矢先、残念ながら、Leif が2014年に慢性疲労症候群という難病を発病、ライブに帯同出来なくなってしまったのです。バンドは現在、ENTOMBED に所属していた Jorgen Sandstrom や ex-OPETH の Per Wiberg (以前のインタビューで触れた通り、彼はベーシストでもある) をサポートベーシストに起用してライブを行っています。
ライブでプレイ出来ないとは言え、Leif の創作意欲は衰えることを知りません。CANDLEMASS の誕生を高らかに告げたデビュー作、”Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” の30周年を記念する新作 EP “Death Thy Lover” が遂にファンの元へと届けられました。
全4曲、26分の作品は、勿論、ドゥーミーなリフワーク、扇情的なギターソロ、テンポチェンジによる緩急など、CANDLEMASS のクラッシックなトレードマークが存分に詰まっています。しかし、同時に以前の CANDLEMASS とは異なる”キャッチーさ”というフレッシュな要素、そして薄れつつあった “Epicus” の復活を強く感じられる、魅力的なレコードに仕上がりました。
アルバムオープナー、”Death Thy Lover” を聴けば、Lars のリードプレイが現在の CANDLEMASS を牽引していることに気づくでしょう。メタルシーンでも、最も過小評価されている優れたアックスマンは、時にアグレッシブ、時にエモーショナルに楽曲を彩ります。巧みなベンディング、ワウの使用、豊かなフレーズのバリエーションで組み立てられたソロパートは、まるで起承転結のお手本のようですね。
さらに、新加入 Mats Leven の見事な歌唱、そしてポップとさえ言えるキャッチーなボーカルラインは、CANDLEMASS に新しい風を吹き込んでいます。やはりこの人の才能は本物。この楽曲のメロディーラインを聴けば、Yngwie の “Facing The Animal” が誰のおかげで傑作となり得たのか明らかですね。
タイトルトラックがキャッチーさの象徴だとすれば、 “Sinister n’ Sweet” はエピカルなドゥームメタルへの帰還を伝えています。極上のボーカルとアルペジオを軸とした冒頭のメランコリックなクリーンパートと、ドゥーミーなリフワークの対比は、シネマティックとさえ言えるほどで、 CANDLEMASS の新章開幕を告げていますね。
実は最も今までの CANDLEMASS らしいインストゥルメンタル曲 “The Goose” で幕を閉じるまで、この短くも印象深い作品は、リスナーに濃密な “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” を提供し続けるに違いありません。
今回弊誌では、長年 CANDLEMASS を支え続けて来たリードギタリスト Lars Johansson、そして遂に正式メンバーとなった Mats Leven にインタビューを行うことが出来ました！これだけのものを提示されると、どうしても続きが聴きたくなりますね。さて CANDLEMASS に”次”はあるのでしょうか？？どうぞ！！

Q1: Hi, Par! Thanks a lot for giving us this great opportunity!! Sabaton really knocked us out at Loud Park 2015!! Lots of Japanese Metal fans choose you as best act of Loud Park. Please let me know your impression about Japan, Japanese Metal fans, and Loud Park.
【 Pär 】: We are very impressed by all of Japan. Of course the fans who are very loyal but also we are impressed by Japan as a country. We had a fantastic time even if the jetlag made sure we slept early in the evenings and sadly missed all of Tokyos nightlife. Next time!
Q1: SABATON は LOUD PARK 2015のまさに台風の目でしたね！多くの日本のメタルファンが SABATON をベストアクトに選んでいました。まずは感想を聞かせてください。
Q2: The tank was on stage!! Tank!! We couldn’t believe that. haha. Joakim’s vest, What a nice !! All members wore same military pants. These army like stage effects reminds us WWⅠ, WWⅡ. What made you so? And what is past world war to you?
【 Pär 】: Actually we sing about history. And to fit into our own theme a bit more we take some theatrer effects onto the stage. It becomes more intense and exciting to have the stage a part of the show.
Of course Sabaton does not need to hide behind tanks and stagesets but its a nice addon to a show.
Q3: This is first interveiw with you, so could you tell us about the band? How did Sabaton start? And what’s the meaning of your band name Sabaton?
【 Pär 】: Well, its a long story. Lots of people in Japan I guess have recently discovered Sabaton and thinks its a new band. But we have been going on for 16 years and today the band is headlining some of the biggest festivals in Europe and has several gold and platinum awards for sales.
The band was formed in 1999 in Falun, Sweden. Since we signed to a small local label the first 10 years we had to do all ourselves. This has led to that we are now a well functioning band that does not even need a management on this level. We are self managed. Even though the original lineup was intact for 13 years we had finally a break in the band in 2012. Since some of us wanted to work even harder and some wanted to step down a bit.
Sabaton is a very hard touring band. I have been on the road for 300 days in 12 months.
Q4: So, your latest release “Heroes” is definitely your masterpiece. Especially, I was really impressed by “Inmate 4859” That is the song about Witold Pilecki, hero of Poland. Also from the title of the album, I felt you focused on kind of “Heroism” at the “Heroes”. How about that?
【 Pär 】: We focused the album on people who went beyond the call of duty and did something that put them into great harms way to make it short and simple. It was a perfect theme for Sabaton we thought.
The song Inmate 4859 was actually the first story we started with, it became the leading star when writing the album.
Q5: “Ballad of the Bull” is really beautiful and emotional song. I really love the song because it shows your melodic aspect deeply. But lot’s of fans surprised at your ballad. What made you record this kind of song?
【 Pär 】: Sabatons music is very wide spread. There are trashmetal songs, ballads and all kinds of technical stuff. So for us we are not bound to any limitations when writing a song. This song we had no idea on how to proceed when we first wrote it so we took help of some old friends who had the whole idea of the arrangement.
Q5: 対して “BALLAD OF THE BULL” は非常に美しくエモーショナルなバラードですね。あなた達のメロディックな側面を深く表したような楽曲です。ただ、ファンはこういった楽曲に驚いたでしょうね？
Q6: At 2012, four original members left the band. And “Heroes” is the first album with new lineup. What’s the difference between these two lineups?
【 Pär 】: Indeed. After 13 years with original lineup 4 bandmembers decided to quit. I simply said we have to tour more and work harder. And some were not willing to do that due to different reasons which I totally understand and support. No hard feelings but me and Joakim went on with Sabaton and they formed Civil War which is their band today.
Q7: Anyway, “Primo Victoria” was played at Loudpark, off course. Melody and lyric of the song is loved much by your fans and it’s like Anthem of Sabaton. Looking back now, what’s “Primo Victoria” to you?
【 Pär 】: Primo Victoria means the first victory and I guess it sums up what it means. The song gave us our first real record deal and thats where it all began!
We are looking forward to Come back to Japan!! Sorry it took 16 years for us to come. We promise we come back quicker next time!
Actually the show at Loud Park was over our expectations and I am already looking into ways to coming back soon!!

スウェーデンの新世代プログバンド MOON SAFARI には停滞気味の所謂”プログレ”シーンに新風を吹き込み、活性化させる事が大いに期待されています。別段、何か新しい事をやっている訳ではありませんし、演奏技術が特別優れているわけでもありません。ただ彼らの生み出すメロディーは BILLY JOEL や ELTON JOHN といったポピュラー音楽稀代のメロディーメイカー達に勝るとも劣らないほどのクオリティーを誇っています。瑞々しく爽やかで突き抜けるような美しいメロディーに強力なコーラスワーク。これをプログロックのフィールドで具現化出来ているバンドは他に A.C.T くらいではないでしょうか。今回弊誌ではベーシストの JOHAN に新作 “HIMLABACKEN VOL.2”, 「YOUは何しに日本へ」で生歌まで披露した日本についてなど語っていただきました。
